This was 'my' song when I had a crush on a girl in my high-school. Sadly, she didn't know I existed. But a guy can dream when he's just 15 years old. Happy Birthday to your friend. Thanks Troy.
Nicely done! Great tone with this bass set up in this one. Sounds like a marriage between a 4001 and a Stingray. Graham is not really known for his bass playing, but many people know him as a songwriter. He was rather prolific in the 60s and 70s, co writing this one and several others released by different bands. And it appears he is still active at the age of 77.
Yes. I saw Graham perform live last year and It was one of the best concerts I've been to for ages. I thought he sounded as good if not better than when I saw 10CC back in 1977.
Another tune I remember listening to at camp with my AM radio up against my ear and the covers pulled up over my head. It wasn't far from you actually. New York Military Academy had a summer camp. I was 11. Great job as usual Troy. Thanks for the memory!!!
Nice one Troy -10cc really hark back to the days when harmonically complex music could make the charts. As well as the McCartney influence, good choice on the Bruce Thomas bass because the chromatic run that goes from F# to A on the line in the song - "you think you're gonna break up but she says she wants to make up" is very Bruce.
Thank you... yeah, those were the days, weren't they? I should ask Bruce on his thoughts about 10cc. I didn't know that they were from England... and they were around about the same time as EC&TA.
Happy Birthday to Sue! What an incredibly fun swing bassline to play, which are already fun to play in my opinion. Quite a smooth song, and you can always expect that fun 10cc!
@@TJH3113 Yeah it may just be me, but I can't help but counting in the rhythm of any song I hear. When I was listening to this once more, I kept on counting in triplets/shuffle rhythms of the bass playing. Just a neat quirk of mine I guess haha.
Great cover and marvelous tone - that bass sounds great! 10cc - such an interesting band. Some hits and some really out there stuff, but all of it musically exceptional! Edit - I always felt like this could have been a Queen song.
Thanks as always for sharing. It is a very beatlesque quality to it. Great memories of a wonderful time for popular music. I don't think we realized what a special time it was
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I totally agree. I have a much greater appreciation for this music now than I did when it was coming out.
I am a MASSIVE 10cc fan. MASSIVE. Awesome job on this. They are sincerely one of the most underrated bands in Pop Music History, which is surprising, because they set precedent for many an artist that followed them. Thanks for bringing an even greater appreciation for this band. And that bass line. So melodic! And yeah, I'm not a Bass player that really has Paul McCartney as an influence. But I'm influenced definitely by those who he had influence on, like Chris Squire. It's definitely there. And it's definitely there in Graham Gouldman's playing. But 10cc were very versatile. And very calculated sometimes too. This song is definitely aimed at the McCartneyesque. But since 10cc incorporated a lot of satire and parody in their work, one can never tell of this is inspiration or device. But I believe this is inspiration. They were McCartney admirers. (I'm more Harrison and Lennon honestly)
Very cool... and thanks! To be honest, I've probably only ever heard this song and their other big hit. Thanks for filling me in on some of the band's backstory.
You're welcome! Check out 10cc (1973) Sheet Music (1974) (IMO their masterpiece) The Original Soundtrack (1975) How Dare You! (1976) Indispensable! You will NOT be disappointed. They were far far more than those two hits. When they signed to Mercury in 1975, it was the highest any band had been paid a recording contract up to that time. They had already proven on an independent label that they were a hit making machine. And they hadn't even written "I'm Not In Love" yet. Which is STILL satire / parody. All of their songs had those elements in them, even the "romantic" ones. @@TJH3113
How did I miss this one? One of my favorite non-Yes bass lines. And the release date was close enough to my own birthday to make it even better. Thanks for posting, T!
So awesome. This song means a lot of different things to me. First - the bass line - fun and melodic. Also - I turned 50 this year, this song reminds me of my favourite era for music. Lastly, when my 20 year old son was a little boy this song would still have been on rotation on my play list. He must gravitated to it - my wife and I heard him singing it playing in his room while playing. We recorded it on a cell phone and to this day replay it every now and then! Great song choice Troy, and played well as always. Tone sounds great too. Magellan preamp sounds good, I've seriously thought of grabbing one lately.
It's really great to hear that this song struck so deeply and I thank you for sharing your reflections on it. I hope you put that blackmail tape to good use. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment. The Magellan is very similar to the SansAmp Para-Driver, but with no "drive" function. I really like it a lot.
Happy Birthday to Sue! Love the bass line in this song. 10CC had another song "Dreadlock Holiday" that I always liked the bass line of despite the fact that the song is ridiculous in many ways. It was one of the first songs I learned on bass since it was so easy. This one is way better though. You're right - it does sound kind of like Mccartney! I never noticed that before. Nice playing as always.
I really liked 10cc back in the 70's. We saw them live a couple of years ago. Only bassist/singer/writer Graham Gouldman is left of the original line-up but they're still a great act to catch live. This November they'll be back on tour around here so we'll probably go see them again. Thanks Troy.
Thanks! Yeah, I can hear some Queen in there, now that you mention it. That Jellyfish song is coming along pretty well. There's actually a lot of subtle variations. Catchy song.
I have been subscribed to your channel for many years, I think the way you play is magnificent! Thank you for producing for so long! hugs straight from Brazil (and forgive my English mistakes hahaha) 💚🇧🇷
Great bass line, I haven't heard this song before, the chord progression was very interesting but worked very well. And as always, great playing, I loved that bass line.
Tone sounds great with the Genzler Pre Amp! When you are playing those low chromatic notes on the E string, great definition. Each note sounds really nice and defined.
The Genzler's layout is similar to the SansAmp Para-Driver, but without the "Drive" function. In its place, it has two "Contour" knobs that sound good.
Thank you!!! That one has been suggested a number of times and I'm started with it a few times, but always put it down. There are a ton of little variations, it's a pretty long song, and I'm not in love with the song. Because of the amount of time I'd spend on it, I resist doing it, but I'll revisit it and maybe my mind will have changed.
Thanks! A few people have mentioned a similarity to Queen. I can definitely hear it. I've done a fair number of ABBA covers. Just search "TJH3113 ABBA" and see what turns up. I love them.
Nice birthday blessing. I haven’t seen too many basses from your very good collection of instruments that represent the counterfeit Japanese stuff like Burny, Fernandes, Greco, and others. Have you considered them? Just curious.
Thanks Scott. I really do appreciate the quality of instruments that came out of Japan in the 70's and 80's but, for some reason, I was never really interested in the "counterfeit" stuff. I probably should have been, back in the day, but now, some of the copies sell for more than I think the originals are worth. For example - I don't think a Rickenbacker is worth $1,000, so I wouldn't pay between $800-$1000 for a copy. I loved my Aria Pro II's and I still have the Ibanez RB-850, as well as the Westbury Track 2.
Thank you Jonathan. I haven't had a proper amp for many years now... just the Fender guitar practice amp with the 5" speaker that I used when recording my earliest videos.
Thanks! I did the search and immediately recognized Bissonette drumming, so I assumed it was with Ringo. I've seen them a few times, but never with Graham. He sounds great but, truth be told, he plays it down two whole steps. No disrespect intended, since I don't think he sang the song to begin with.
Fantastic Troy really enjoyed this! Many thanks x
Thanks Sue! Happy Birthday!

I did not know that it was a "swing" song. That explains why a straight 4/4 beat didn't work when playing along with it.
