  • A small, rather insignificant model of an old RAF tanker. Not much to see at first but slowly it becomes a highly desirable miniature truck. The unique blue/grey colour is somewhat drab but with the addition of a red, white and blue RAF roundel on the top and a silver front bumper bar this little beauty takes on a look of it's own.
    All in all it was worth the effort to have another forgotten model restored for my collection.

    Love watching these makeovers, very addictive watching the process and seeing the final reveal, I'm similar vintage to you and grew up loving Matchbox cars and have since bought a few of my favourite pieces that I enjoyed as a kid, and your right, you don't realize the detail of the models. Love the humour!!

    The tank is a hollow casting, the back of the tank is a press fit and should pop off (if you should ever want to). IIRC, the Bedford TK tanker is hollow underneath and does not have the back cast separately.

    I would have put one more drop of blue to bring it back a bit but, I can picture those side by side & see shade differences like any example. As far as boring,... not so. It is your work along with your narration backed by that wonderful music that is very nostalgic for earlier times & posts. I love the subject matter of RAF refueling truck. Love your yard & surroundings also. I got crows, ravens & blue jays around here. Restaurant Portion Cups are what you are putting paint in. What they are called here in Maine. I like the Poly Strip the best. No splotchy crap. You could just attach shelf brackets to that diorama & mount it on the wall. Very nice by the way. An odd surprise.

    I've been watching your makeovers for a couple years now, and it's great to see how you're constantly thinking how to come up with new techniques for a more accurate restoration. With regard to a couple of the comment you made about features on the tanker truck, the two hose connections may be 1 outlet hose, and a return line in case of overfill of the airplane tank. The 5-gallon jerrycan may be used to recharge the pump in case it loses its prime. Just my two cents as an engineer of what those features might be for.

    Thats a nice restoration Marty. The jerry can would be for standard fuel, the fuel in the RAF tanker is probably aviation fuel. It was nice of Julie to get your own pair of tweezers, did you ever return her toothbrush?

    • @minmogrovingstrongandhealthy
      @minmogrovingstrongandhealthy Рік тому +1

      That also they carry water and oil too in the cans not just just fuel. Especially if there is extra pump etc attached to a truck it operates all sorts of things and needs different resources on hand not just simply fuel.

      🙂 Marty always returned her toothbrush. He was only 'borrowing it' to clean the parts. I recall that in one video, Julie did a cameo, (after her brush had been returned), and when she smiled, she had several teeth missing. (a la the movies). 😅 I cracked up at that one. And Kevin wasn't even involved!

    Beautifully done Marty and thanks yet again for a very entertaining build.
    The vehicle itself is a Leyland Hippo. As a refueller it came in many forms. As to the box with the two holes, this could be a collector for gravity unloading in underground storage tanks. By preference gasoline is not pumped in that case. Grounding from these holes seems improbable to me as this is usually done by connecting a grounding tab on the vehicle. This connection is made with a cable alike to a starter cable with a crocodile clamp at the end. The big "closet" aft of the cabin contains a big drum with the hose to refuel the airplanes. The ladderlike construction on top of the tanker is not a ladder but a walkway. Loading the vehicle is done by standing on it and put a loading pipe in. Loaded a lot of fuel myself like that.

    @kjamison5951 Рік тому

    Hi Marty! Superb restoration! That colour match was spot-on!
    Some other folks have commented on the two holes you mentioned and this is my take on that.
    Close up images of the real thing are rare so my guess is that this might be the grounding connection so that any electrostatic charge between the aircraft and the runway surface can be safely bled away before fuelling commences.
    Nozzles and connectors for the pipe work are likely behind the doors on the side to keep them safe.
    It would be nice to hear from any RAF ground crew or military museum folks who have experience of this vehicle to give us some valuable information.
    Best wishes from Northern Ireland!

    @20:03 -- I was going to say that "royal blue" color reminded me of the paint color the Royal Navy used for its Sea Harriers!
    I didn't know if Marty would be annoyed by this remark since he was in the RAF! I know in the United States interservice rivalry is still a thing! LOL
    Anyhow, the color association with the Royal Navy and the Sea Harrier is moot since the Sea Harriers were retired in 2006. For the last 4 years of UK Harrier operations, the Royal Navy was assigned some Harrier IIs and they flew those with a blue paint job similar to the shade of blue this Matchbox model tanker uses!

    I enjoy your videos and have done for several years. I'm 65, and when I was a little kid, I was captivated by the Matchbox vehicles in their colorful little boxes in the store display cases. They were like catnip to me. Hot Wheels came along and while they may have been 'cooler,' (I did enjoy them -- I was a bit older by then) they were never as delightful to my senses. For me, the later 'free-wheeling' Matchboxes were neither fish nor fowl. They lacked the charm of the traditional models, but weren't as cool as the Hot Wheels. Oh well. Anyhow, I want to say that while your videos generally have a calming, Bob-Ross-like effect on me, the episodes involving Kevin the koala are hilarious. I wish you and your loved ones the very best.

    Since Mattel bought Matchbox, the cars, unfortunately, have been nothing more than complete piece of crap, like all the Hot Wheels have always been. Good old Matchbox cars won't come back anymore. The old Matchboxes were always more like the real mccoy, but the ones from HotWheels rolled better and most kids made their choice based on this. I've always preferred Matchbox and it's still like that today, but only the 60’s and 70’s ones.

    I Remember convoys of these in and around Oxfordshire when there were still many RAF airfields.....Also, don't know if it is still SECRET, but at the side of certain roads in 'The Cotswolds' were, Pumping stations, where a huge aviation fuel pipeline ran underground between the RAF bases. At these pumping stations tankers like these would line up and be filled or unloaded.....I think they had a top speed of barely 40 Mph....the convoys were very slow. It's a Leyland Hippo by the way......Some had the civilian Cab, some had a military cab that could be split for transport, in the old transport planes we had back in the late 40's early 50's to the 60's........these trucks did very little miles and were in service for a long time...they were only changed because their capacity was too small for modern usage. The truck tank your have carried aviation fuel, jet fuel and in those days, maybe some high grade petrol....the Layland hippo had a Diesel engine, really old school diesel, in truth it would have run on the Aviation fuel, but it was better on Diesel, so the Jerry cans would have been for the truck itself, all British military trucks have in the past had Jerry can holders for extra fuel and range.😀

    The small 'Jerry can' (Which got its name from being a modification of a German design in WW2!) would be for diesel for the truck. The tank would carry aviation spirit ('Avgas') for planes. Diesels can't use it. Jet and Turbojet engines burn Kerosene, which the tanker may also carry. Incidentally, Avgas still contains lead additives. The original tanker was based on a Leyland Hippo 6x4 chassis.

    Caustic soda is a base (the name of a group of solutions). It has a pH of 14. It's a corrosive substance on the other side of the pH scale. Pure water has a pH of 7 so it's neutral (in the middle). Hydrochloric acid has a pH of 0 and is a strong acid. So on the pH scale caustic soda and hydrochloric acid cause the same damage to your skin (but on opposite ends of the pH scale).

    The body of that Tesla is part Zamac and they made the roof part of the windshield piece. The mainline Matchbox and Hot Wheels do this now to try to keep them at around a dollar. Matchbox and Hot wheels, both made by Mattel of course, produce premium pieces that more resemble the Matchbox and Hot Wheels of old. Hot wheels premiums use the metal base and Matchbox premiums use mostly plastic but they are starting to make metal bases now. Oh and Marty, the Matchbox premium come with boxes with opening flaps..😂...and they have done retro looking boxes of late as well....they are Around $4 or 5 bucks..m

    Marty: As the caustic soda (aka sodium hydroxide, or lye) dissolves in the water there is a chemical reaction that creates heat. A word of warning: Don’t put caustic soda on aluminum. It reacts quickly.
    Greatly enjoy your restorations!

    This is a very interesting model. I love it.
    The two holes are to hook up pipe hoses for fueling. The jerry can I’d for filling a car or small plane that does not need the big pressure tank.

    They make those pots in stainless steel. The plastic ones decomposes with thinner. I use the metal and can store for months

    Very interesting to see your workbench lighting setup for filming. I'm just setting up my workbench for doing videos so this was very useful. The video was very interesting too, cheers.
