      mainly the wheels, eventually new tires will remove that problem, but the wheels now need some work to get it off. Plus the tires, besides the sidewall much of the paint will come off as the tread wears away

    BTW - for a 125, it totally turned a 500 beater into a 1500 beater! And that's bank right there.
    And yes - if you wait a week or more, you can sand/buff that paint. IF it's warm out! If it's getting chilly where you are, wait a month or more. Which puts us all into winter, so do it inside (don't try to do it to a cold/frozen surface).

      Thanks! Yes its been chilly here. About 7 days later the paint isnt hard enough that id be comfortable cut/buff. Maybe in a few weeks if I find the motivation but its good enough.

    In the late 1980s I painted my 1949 Chevy pickup with a bright red implement paint from a Farm n Home store... I used a reducer and hardener in my mix and threw 1 packet of a pearl additive in, and I did 3 coats... outside, early in the morning, about 40 feet from the house.... It was very still out, I got just a couple of runs, and there were no flash areas or fisheyes anywhere, and the paint actually laid down very smooth.... It actually looked great from 10 feet away, but 3 months later, when I wet sanded the imperfections and buffed the entire truck out (3 entire MY days), it wasn't a show quality, but all I ever got was compliments and people bragging on it... I'd never painted a vehicle before that, and haven't since either.... I remember the total for everything was like $120 at the time..... a buddy lent me his sprayer gun n compressor and sanders...... A guy at a bar sprayed a half dozen vehicles in the parking lot with gravel after he was thrown out, and MY truck was one of them...... That paint is some tough stuff, because you could see where the gravel hit as tiny puffs of dust were left behind.... Not a peck, scratch, chip, NOthin on my truck..... but there were factory paints that had damage and people were not happy....

    Great job. Certainly boiled it down to getting paint on a car without all the many steps a lot of UA-camrs go through. I’ve shot rattle cans instead of the prep to spray using a gun but your approach gave me confidence to go with tractor supply. A ten footer is ok for my project and not I don’t need to spend a fortune on rattle cans. The time savings alone will be with it. Thanks for a practical video that has motivated me and given me confidence to try.

  • @DrFiero
    @DrFiero 2 місяці тому +20

    For the newbs trying this... those HF purple guns have a 2.0mm tip on them! Very easy to dump on too much paint, and you'll get vertical surface runs. They then don't atomize that great if you dial down the settings and you'll get a lot of orange peel. It IS possible to do it! But don't get frustrated at your skill set if you don't get the desired results. Try to find a gun with a 1.3 tip - you'll get to go slower and more careful, and have a better chance at a good job.

    • @spankranchgarage
      @spankranchgarage  2 місяці тому +1

      That is a great point regarding the tip size. Know anything about the new HF "black widow" gun? Id like to try a better gun to spray real auto paint on a couple of other cars I am working on. Its 170 bucks so its a gamble as ive seen real professional guns selling used for not much more.

    I have painted many old semis, trailers, tractors, equipment, and few cars. The majic stuff was usually my least favorite to work with, I dont know how to word it but its "sticky". Probably due to the fact it soybean oil based, using a strong thinner like xylol (instead of their expensive reducer) and painting on a hot sunny day helps. Used to just deal with it back when it used to be 35 a gal vs 50 rustoleum implement (not regular) when painting cheap stuff but with the recent price hike it just sucks. Ace/Krylon works pretty good too. I usually dump way more hardener too, keeps er shinny longer. Found an old binks spray gun with a good air filter set up at estate auction and it was night/day between the same exact spraygun you are using.
    Great video!

    Car looks nice! I have been looking heavily into this trying to decide if tractor paint or single stage solid for my 54 chevy truck (driver). ONE thing: You are young but soon you wont be - please wear a respirator. If you can smell it, it's doing damage. I take many fun risks in my life that could kill me, but I wear a bunny suit, gloves, and a full face breather when I paint. Surfing, race cars, mountain climbing, and many other risks: Whatever. But risks like this just arent worth it.

    • @spankranchgarage
      @spankranchgarage  5 днів тому

      You are 100% right. I need to do better with PPE. For your 54 I think it would be a shame to use the tractor paint. While it looks fine now I expect it to fade out in the near future. Thats fine for this car which will be scrap soon. But for your chevy, its maybe only double the cost to use real automotive paint that will resist the UV.

      @pellacars 5 днів тому

      @@spankranchgarage funny we talk about this, I am going to be taking a full face respirator and using a shop vac to force outside air into it, and the positive pressure will make it impossible for fumes to get in… Super safety conscious in the shop
      Part of me thinks that faded farm equipment looking paint is appropriate for an old truck… I’m certainly not looking for anything shiny, which is what turned me off from Automotive paint. 50s paint jobs weren’t nearly as shiny as modern paint jobs, which is wouldn’t let me to tractor paint… Maybe an Eastwood single stage solid color? But still I think it’s a bit too mirror like for a 50s vehicle. I’m so very much not sure what to do
      I wish the guy I got it from just left it all the uploading instead of restoring it

    You don't worry about breathing in those paint particles while sanding?
    As a teen, I once painted a men's bathroom where p1ss had caused massive rust in gray painted metal walls.
    When I got home that evening, blew my nose, lots of gray sludge came out of my nose - no idea how much made it all the way to my lungs!
    I didn't make that mistake again!
    I've lived another 40 years since, so maybe it didn't shorten my life much (hopefully) -
    Be careful out there.

    As long as the people knew the the Red. black and blue cars and trucks were mine that's all that mattered. I never fixed the dents or faded and cracked bumpers or anything because the worse they looked the better
    Painted them with a brush and roller and yes it looked like crap we had paint runs and bad lines and everyone pointed out how bad it looked and that was Great because any free advertising is good advertising , We had people call to order things just to see the paint jobs, All the cars were fit for the road I made sure they all passed a legal safety and had new tires and breaks '' safety first '' ,

    OK I did this with Bright Yellow paint. Just after I got a stunningly beautiful wet look coat on the hood one of those giant 3 inch long moths did a three point landing in the geographical center of the hood. His feet stuck in the wet paint but he wanted freedom so he beat his wings rapidly which turned him around in circles in my wet paint. Between his feet and his wings it left an interesting design in the paint, but I had to let it dry and start all over. I knida wish I had covered him in paint and let dry and used him for a hood ornament.

    I use Implement paint all the time, the trick for cars/ truck the trick is to thin it out more and use less hardner, my mix is generally 6:1:.75, 6 parts paint, 1 part Thiner .75 part hardner, the thinner the paint is the less Hardner you need to use by doing a 1:1 thinner hardner mix with less paint then the paints going to be brittle because it got too hard too fast and you end up with 90's factory paint jobs that was fading and peeling after year 3.

    Looks good, thanks for the video. I am going to do a similar project with a K5 Blazer. It is a crawler that is made for the trail however I need to paint it to get the HOA off my back. How much of that paint did you wind up using? How much do you think I should get for a K5? Thanks again.

      This Neon took a little over a half gallon to put enough paint down to feel right. I have a k5 I need to paint as well. I think a gallon is plenty. I think they sell quarts too so thats nice to keep in mind for touch up in the future

      I may. I need to weld new rockers and some other body work. I am going to use real auto paint on the blazer however. 2 tone with a clear coat
