@@fractalgem pyanadons goes beyond the point of fun for me. The amount needed just to automate the first chip isn't even fun anymore. Seablock is about my limit with that sort of thing I think.
I think "produce more x" is all what you do in Factorio because to make more red circuits you need first more greens/oil to produce those, you need more iron/copper and you also should produce all those machines somewhere in your factory, this is why I love factorio :)
I always make red circuits factory inside the module that makes research packs, so all I have to do is to have to attach conv. belt with basic resources (copper, iron, plastic etc) It takes more space for sure, but you don't have to worry after lack of resources after module multiplication.
I was doing this from the start (well after I finished off the iron mine near my starting factory) and I was screwed when I learned I needed iron ore for concrete. luckily I didn't need much and it was easy to adapt a single train car to bring in all the iron ore I needed
Smelting on-site isn't always a good idea. For example, raw iron is needed for concrete. I thought i was clever placing my refinery in my first pumpjack outpost and have the train bring the already finished petroleum gas to my base, only to find out about light and heavy oil (and flamethrower fuel) later and having to redesign my entire refinery. You're better off just bringing the raw materials to your base and refining them there
It depends on the game stage, at the beginning you might be better off with a central smelting operation because iit won't attract as many biters and evolution level will stay lower for longer. Later on when you can hold off the hordes it's much more manageable to spread out the pollution. I'm currently on a save file where I have secured enough land that I can make sub-bases that produce just one component or the most sensible component for the area. My green chip base is next to a 16M copper and a 15M Iron and on the way back to the main hub is my coal liquefaction base (because it's surrounded by 60M total coal deposits) where they get turned into red the blue chips, speed modules etc. The main hub is just labs and launch pads receiving trains full of science packs and rocket parts!
Also: Effeciencies modules don't just save power, they reduce the amount of pollution you make. It's great if you are constantly being attacked because of pollution.
i didnt know that or the Z to put ammunition into turrets trick and i have 600 really just gotta go through the entirety of hotkeys at some point i guess
One thing to mention is: “yes, the oil patch yields are decreasing and you’re not just going insane” because for a new player this is a lot of headache
I'm not new but it's still causing headaches for me. Especially now that I'm playing space exploration with a friend we have a cargo rocket ready for take off but our base is a mess so we're running around putting out one fire after another so we can leave without having to worry about not getting any aupplies
Yet another entertaining and informative video. Another tip is new players may find it useful to cut off contact with their friends and family, stop eating and sleeping, and spend every moment of their waking life planning and developing their factory to achieve 17% faster gear production
Wow, wow, wooooow... only gear production? Skip the next 2 or 3 months and some years after for the rest of it. When you get to green and red circuits you hardly get your fingers off keyboard and mouse anymore and when you get to ballancing all the colours of sciences your eyes will get glued to the screen... :)

As someone who has played this game for over 1200 hours this is a great video! My two favorite things you've said are "no one uses green modules" and "if you kill your neighbors you don't have to worry about their feelings anymore."
I always play 100% solar energy and I could never do it without putting green modules on every single machine in use. Alien attacks have scarred me so now i just try not to disturb them lol
@@pandathug6806 oh God, why did I never think about that? 🤦♀️ I also always play with solar only and I always struggled with expanding the solar farm. I actually have a train track trap to kill invaders too. Best defense ever. The bugs think the train tracks is a opening in my defenses; except there is a train constantly running in loops to destroy any invaders.
Never walk on the train tracks, it's a death trap. I use a automatic wall door thing. The bugs always take the path that "seems" to be the path of least resistance.
that reminds me of Stronghold Crusaders, the old one, the new strongholds seem to be bad. Basically workers counted as pacifist units, they counted toward population and needed housing but they didn't fight, except the woodcutters who were doing minimal resistance. There was a map where 8 opponents sent endless armies to you and destroyed your wall and your archers just couldn't keep up with the sheer number of low level soldiers. I thought it was impossible, but then I made moats, basically a single tile of water but I made a spiral. every second line dugged out and every second of second end canceled, so they didn't bother filling it, they just run at the open space, which was really long, but it's open. so I build like 100 woodcutters and they were free, and generated again and again and kept them slowed down so my archers can catch up on shooting, and had some oil pits at the end if they failed. took me like 10 restarts to kill 2-3 opponents at the start and then 9 hours to win the map. years later I re-played it and won within 2 hours not even using that strategy :D just sold my starting resources for horse archers and went to the offence every now and then. bit of off topic but that was also tower defence with some production lines.
stone walls have the most satisfying placement noise, and super satisfying connection mechanics. It's been a while now, but I think when I first placed a wall it triggered a release of dopamine so dense in my brain that I've been riding that high ever since. That was 1,000 hours of factorio ago

This happens to me all the time. "My rail signalling is broken, so none of my trains are moving. Let me just go fix that quickly" *steps onto the train track, moves the rail signal slightly, immediately gets hit by a train* "I guess it's fixed now..."
When playing with a friend of mine who was new to the game, I let him do all the trains because I wanted him to have the most dangerous fun. By the second 5h day of playing, he was splattered nearly 20 times. Everyone once in a while, I'd hear him say, "Fuck. Well, it's fixed now." Lol All the more fun when you call a train and don't give warning.
You can build a spidertron or place train signals to be warned for coming trains. Bevor the spidertron, death by train was more common to me then death by biters. One time I even embed all rails in my base in walls and build save passways using the yellow light of the train signal and a door.
i just use alarms. had a factory, where running on tracks was unavoidable. i was paranoid after i died 3 or 4 times and alarms were the solution for my mental health

Your first factory is probably small and its easy to move over a few hundred blocks and start your bigger factory once you unlock bots

@@justtheinstinct4893 Lol, you mention it... I just did about that some 3-4 weeks ago... My setup in ( early game ) base is: red and green science production next to eachother, then gray just around a corner ( past the green science production ) and then pre-production for the higher sciences... after those are fully functional, I clear an other area for the oil refinery and related chemicals... and after that clear another area for the actual production of the higher science colours.... I miscalculated the gap between chemic and preproduction and had not enough room for the "offbranching" of mainbus..... so after I managed to get my first armour-with-robotworkers, I put about everything in blueprints, scrapped halve my base and made it rebuild only 6 places further. If I had to do it the moment I found out, it would take me about an hour.. after the robots-upgrade it took about 10 minutes or less.
@@justtheinstinct4893 Yep, me too. but I do not use mods that "break the game", it is easy to have this game played where the mods can bring you to endgame in less than halve-an-hour or so, but then you have to ask yourself, am I realy playing this game or is it played for me by the mods? ... I only use "even distibution" a lot, and that is the most "gamechanging" one out of the 3 or 4 I have installed. I had used some "easly bots" mods, but I feel like cheating the game with those.
Pro-Tip: My brain stopped functioning after plastics. The makes me very ocd mad and my brain melts just thinking about setting up Petro, heavy, and crude productions. Lube is a nightmare for me. Efit: I forgot light oil too.

I tend to build circuit production facilities in places where both iron and copper ore are fairly close together, use trains to bring in coal and oil for making plastic, and bringing out the finished circuits.
I would add about the blueprints: Treat blueprints from other people like a learning opportunity. Analyze them so that you know *why* they work and *how* they work, so that you can use that knowledge to make your own designs better. Don't *just* copy and paste them, or you're going to rob yourself of a lot of fun.
@@haineko1101 I think hes saying he's played enough that improving the efficiency of red circuits is not what he's playing for anymore and some times the BPs you get are over engineered to the point where you might not be able to improve them significantly with out a huge time sink, and you're wanting to move to the next stage. I think at 1800 hours you can decide to take someone elses plan because you've probably already done it 15-20 times yourself
Did reply this already on another comment before , but here is again.. Best way to use anyone else's blueprints, spreadsheets, or any form of coding or programming is: Look at it, learn what it does intent to and how it works, and then modify it to your specific needs and situation.. Do not litaraly steal or borrow, copy pasting is easy but does not always work, adapt it to fit it into your processing methodes.
@@erikblaas5826 Ok, if my goal is to get to megabase level and I've done the initial set-up 20-50 times, theres no reason for me not to copy someones mall/depot or kickstarter base, because I just want to get enough resources to get to doing some major building/infrastructure. I dont need to optimize everything on the way up, because I've done it enough before and that specific step isn't what my goal is anymore. Its fine if you want to sit down and take someone blueprints and findout if you can make it more optimal, but I want to get to the next stage of base developement and I already have a handle on the concepts i need.
@@detaaditya6237 you can do ore transportation w/o using trains if its too complex to understand, you can use the 'other' mode of ore transportation........ belt
Tip: The first time you do a main bus layout, only build on one side of the bus. Sure, the bus will end up 2x as long, but you'll be able to expand the bus as you realize you need a belt of this or 4 more belts of that. With experience, you'll get a feel for how wide your bus will be for your goals.
This is incredibly useful advice. There is hardly a greater pain than having to make a secondary parralel running bus that spaghetties into your main bus. The worst thing about factorio is that you either need to know EXACTLY what you will need, or you have to make it possible to expand anything infinitely later on.
Eventually stone veins are not very useful to most players, I recommend creating a landfill production area, pumping it to a huge lake, run a narrow line of land far out in the lake and build a power plant there. You place turrets on either side of the narrow route the plant on land plots that are floating islands and not actually connected to the land route so the diplomatic representatives do not have access. This way your power plant will always be safe and out of the way
I use this for my nuclear plants. Not that it is really needed, but it simply feels right to place such a sensitive and dangerous object onto an isolated island with limited access routes.
I recommend using green modules in miners at your outposts, since they greatly reduce the pollution that's produced and outposts are one of the main pollution spreaders. With full green they just won't create any pollution cloud.
@@maxwilson7001 Yeah. It goes down to 1 pollution/minute/miner, which is so low that it just gets absorbed by the tiles near the miner and the pollution never spreads
@@maxwilson7001 Yeah it's pretty big, it lets you expand way more without increasing attacks. I don't think many people know about it because hardly anyone uses green modules
My tips: 1. Regularly shaped (train/cityblock) grids are amazing, but also very boring in the long run. 2. Experiment with some logic circuits, it adds a whole new dimension to the game 3. Self-imposed constraints lead to interesting variations. If you always gravitate to trains, try a peaceful belt-only run, or a bot-centered Deathworld.
Although i just played it for few days, i really like those feeling when i can finally connect two materials at the opposite side of the base through spaghetti hell of belt conveyors
bases built by beginners have this unique style that you'll never achieve again in your games :/ But you can at least build a huge artilleries train and send some efficient democracy :)

Biggest thing that clicked for me on this game was when I realiized that the fast belts were more about capacity than speed, so if I wanted to fit two yellow belts worth of material in a small space I could use red belt components instead
It took me too long to find this video, but I have five [5] things that you might want to include if you ever do a follow-up video; -There is a literal sheet of balancers that are tried and true. It is certainly worth trying to come up with your own crazy pasta balancers at least once, but the sheet is always nice to come back to when you just want material going everywhere. -There is no shame in having your ammo production system feed via belt to your gun turrets. If anything, it's better than robots as it needs only a fraction of the power. -Gun turrets don't need power; all hail the gun turret. -You will never have enough ammunition for your gun turrets. Are your belts, buffer chests, and gun turrets full? Across your entire quadruple wall base? You still don't have enough ammo. -You will never have enough iron; so ****ing much of your products uses iron.

Frankly, the most fun I have in playing Factorio is the "build > frustration > learning" infinite process about any X material I need to produce at scale.
Pro tip: Deconstruction planners are much better than you'd think initially. You can configure it to only effect ghosts, request slots, and items on ground, which makes it easy to see how many items you need to finish building your factory. Or flip it to a whitelist, and only mark built stuff for deconstruction (if you performed a partial deconstruction before to place the print)
Fun tip: produce a bunch of important intermediate products and store them all in a centralized location. That way you can go and collect a ton of them in one place. Also, learn how trains work. SO worth it.
The buffer design you showed first with inserters in middle of belt is the best buffer design as long as you connect the two ends with an underground tunnel. That way the flow won't be stopped from normal operations while allowing the materials to be picked up into the box for you to use or incase of emergencies the box will supply the belt with materials so the production is not hammered too badly.
--The inserters have NOWHERE NEAR enough speed and capacity to re-fill the belt back up. Side-buffering as shown here even allows for an expanded length of the system, in case you're not at the stack-inserter/cargo-capacity-upgrade(s) just yet so you'd need to use more than 3 to get back to a full belt.-- Oh, wait, you mean the buffer merely picks up some bits from an *active* tunnel that allows the belt to freely flow below ground. That's probably acceptable, if you can deal with the fact that the output from buffer will only ever go on one specific half of the belt. :-B
New players often ignore logic systems completely, even though they can be extremely practical in some situations. Oil is probably one of the hardest steps for new players, mainly because you have to somehow get rid of overproduces oil. Most new players deal with that by huge buffering, or destroying tanks, but once you have researched advanced oil refinement you can super easily balance it with logic systems. Basically, you just set up tanks for each oil type, and once they pass a certain threshold they activate a pump that refines the oil to the next kind. There are also a lot of other small things where it can help. For example, I like to use solid fuel later in the game, but only if I have enough oil, so I did the same with the balancing and solid fuel production is only activated when there is enough oil to spare. But that means that sometimes fuel production will be low, so I have to change back to coal. I dont have to do this manually, as I use logic to activate the belt feeding coal onto the fuel belt. Nuclear power is another part of your factory that can really be optimised with logic.
It's especially hard if they don't know that you can remove cables with shift+left click and manually span copper cables from your inventury between masts. It's so much easier to use big masts to insulate your light oil refinery.
@@Trupen There are several tutorials on youtube about logic systems. mostly controlling routes of materials ( stopping and starting belts or roboarms ) and trains and oil ( chemical ) plants.. those were a big help when I started with it. Not claiming that I know "every trick" by now, but I'm rather good with it and use it often. Even got myself a fully automated "shopping mall", producing about every thing I need in quantities I have set up beforehand, starting when there is demand, stopping when demanded numbers are reached.
Which works, as long as you don't end up overproducing petroleum while needing other oils. You can scratch you head at how did you even manage to do that, but it won't help you
@@xGOKOPx Not a problem 99% of the time, because oil processing alone won't support your petrolium needs (at least if you dont do some whacky stuff with the other oil types). Plus, solid fuel production can always act as a buffer if there actually was some periodic overproduction of something.
Great Video Trupen! (+1 Like from me) Some feedback as requested: - Precise and to the point facts are really valuable, awesome. - Your editing was great, really kept me engaged. - I can't believe you turn Factorio into a comedy, well done sir! - I learnt /got reminded of things that I havent used in ages. - THE FACTORY MUST GROW. I've got just over 900hrs, but this just goes to show that you can never stop learning! Looking forward to your next video!
I like to have a 'garbage belt' that goes around my entire factory, usually a belt that was previously used for ammo. I have it go by my shopping mall, and offload with priority to the shopping boxes, and by the start of my bus, so it can offload materials. This means that, at any time if I have to ditch stuff, I can just toss it in a box and let it unload to the belt. It also means that those mines with only a little bit left can just mine strait to the garbage belt, and they'll eventually empty. By the end I'll also have a 'garbage train' that I can call to me (by placing a station), fill up, and then send back to the garbage berth which will have early priority on the belt, so I can get all the materials back on the line.
that sounds like fun. on a small scale I do that when 2 different ore patches are next to each other so the mixed belt does not clog up the factory. I try to set it up first so that it creates a gap between ore patches.
Even though I have hundreds of hours in the game I still watching these videos! You have such a great sense of humour, thank you very much for bringing joy to UA-cam. You make the world a better place!
To the person who read this, It’s been hard for you, I know, and it makes me sad that you don’t see yourself in the way I see you. Sometimes they are things in life that cause us to loose ourselves, and the way you have is so unimaginable painful. I miss your smile, the way your eyes light up the whole room just by the sound of your laughter. I miss the way you accepted the way you look in the mirror without cursing yourself out about how ugly you look. I miss the way you didn’t think of yourself as a failure because everyone makes mistakes, we all have flaws and we all aren’t perfect. It’s painful to see that no one around you seems to see the pain trough your eyes, but, stranger, I do, I see how heavy your heart is and how comforting the sadness for you might be, how afraid your heart is of happiness because it disappears in the end, right? You don’t know how much impact you have in this world and it’s sad to see that your demons fight against you and want to take over you. Because you do make change, it’s something so simple and little that brightens up someone’s whole world, it can be a small smile from your lips, the way you look at things you’re passionate about, the way you make yourself eat even though it’s been hard for you lately, the way you zoom out and go in your own world, you brighten up my world by reading this, it means a lot to me that you’re here, existing, but I don’t want you to just exist, you deserve to feel alive. You deserve to get up in the morning and feel good about yourself. You deserve to feel something- to feel every damn second alive in this lifetime. It’s heartbreaking that you think you’re not capable of being loved, because you are, I love you trough all my words and I hope you let it happen in your heart. Love is scary, I know, maybe you heart had been broken once and since then you wanted to be rather numb than feel ever again, it hurts me how you punish yourself, does it not deserve love? Because YOU DO deserve love, please forgive yourself, it’s not your fault that the demons want to take over your beautiful heart. You’re not a bad person for distancing yourself from others, but you deserve someone to talk to, you deserve someone to listen. I am listening, you can tell me what’s wrong. It’s everything, isn’t it? There’s something pulling your heartstrings on the ground and no one seems to understand how misunderstood you feel, it’s heartbreaking to know that I am behind the screen and can’t give you a hug, that’s why I will give you a big warm virtual hug and send you lots of love :). You matter. You are worthy. You are loved. You deserve good things. You deserve someone to listen. You deserve to eat and drink. You deserve to feel good and alive. You deserve to smile. You deserve a hug. You deserve to be all the things you want to be, because you deserve to have and feel good things happening to you and have a fulfilled life. I know I might not know you personally but I care about you so much, I write this because I want you to stay here with me, I want you to hold on a little longer because you matter so much to me, because I will not let you give up on yourself. I want you to see that you should not give up on yourself because you DESERVE GOOD THINGS. I want you to look back on the time when you were a kid, you didn’t give up when you tried to swim for the first time, you didn’t give up when you tired to walk for the first time and fell, you never gave up on yourself, you always kept on pushing forwards, so why can’t you now? I know it’s tiring, your mentally tired, but dont your younger self deserve good things? look back at your eyes that used to be full of hope, look back on those dreams. Don’t let yourself fall, you deserve better. We will both fight, I will fight for you. I won’t let those demons get to you. You can hold on to me, I won’t let you down :). Whenever you feel lonely, then look at the sky, I always look at it and think about you. Yes, you, because it makes me happy that there’s someone looking right back, maybe we can’t see each other but I can feel your presence here with me and that’s enough for me, because I am glad your heart is beating and you’re still fighting. You’re so much stronger thank you think, you didn’t leave your spot on this earth even if you wanted to, you belong here, even though it doesn’t feel like it, when you don’t feel like belonging than build your own home here, put all your love in it and dreams. Think of you as a star when you feel alone, you shine because your heart is good, no matter what mistake you made, no matter about the past you had, you’re one of the stars that shine bright in the universe because you’re heart is beautiful, that’s why the demons in your mind wants to have it. As one of the stars you see others stars, maybe they have felt the same way as you do at some point in there life, but they lighten up the universe with each other’s presence. You’re a star for me, maybe you don’t see it yourself but I can see it, you’re beautiful from inside and out, your body is beautiful the way it is. You make me happy by reading this, you make me feel something by your presence and when you can make me feel that way than you also make other people feel that way about you too. I hope you stay for yourself and don’t let your story get written by others but by yourself, it’s your story not theirs. As you can see, I say a lot of “I hope” because I have hope for you even if you don’t have it for yourself, I see hope in you even though you might want to give up. That’s why I hope you won’t see the world in darkness and will see it colorful again, I hope I will give you a glimpse of hope and make the world you see a bit colorful for today. My favorite color is yellow, and I hope the next time you see the color yellow you will think about my words. If someone left you than don’t blame yourself, don’t think you weren’t enough, don’t lower yourself for someone who couldn’t see the awesomeness in you. If you lost someone I am so sorry for your loss, they want you happy, I hope you don’t feel guilty or regret because you were there, you spend enough time with them, they want you to be happy. They are in a good and safe place now. If someone broke your heart than I am so sorry that they couldn’t see the way you look so beautiful because of the heart you have. Anyone who gets to be with you, doesn’t know how fucking lucky he/ she/ they is :). If you aren’t accepted at home or in general than I am so sorry that you have to deal with someone/ something you shouldn’t be ashamed of, I accept you and support you, I accept you as a human being no matter what race, religion, nationality, skin color, or sexuality you have. You’re safe here with me :). You’re not useless, you’re not a burden to anyone. You’re not a problem, you’re human and your feelings are valid. You’re not being dramatic. Please don’t starve yourself, you deserve food and to drink, I know it’s hard. It hurts to see that you’re in so much pain :( you deserve so much man, don’t let your emotions control you. Don’t let them get the best of you. I am sorry no one is noticing, I wish /hope I could take your pain away for today or even for a moment while you’re reading this. If no one told you, I am so proud of you, you’re reading this and it’s enough for me to be proud of you because you’re here and that’s all that matters to me. If it’s night for you, go to sleep, I know it’s hard to fall asleep right now but you deserve a good sleep. If you have nightmares, please, don’t let them fight you. If it’s day for you, don’t start it by such sad music, I know it’s impossible to have a good day with such mindset but take baby steps, start by drinking two cups of water everyday in the morning and so on.. You will start building little healthy habits. If it’s evening for you, you’re probably overwhelmed and stressed, I want you to know it’s okay to feel the way you feel. You don’t need to be scared, of course you’re overwhelmed or stressed, I mean who wouldn’t? But it’s important to know that when you feel that way you should do a little self care, such as taking a bath for example? You deserve to feel at ease and relaxed. And if you are somewhere in between I hope you know that you’re so strong for breathing despite the pain, I know you will make it :) I believe in you. All I want for you is to stay here, I really mean all my words, even if there is a lot of unsaid things I want to tell u and my text is getting longer and longer,I want you here. I hope one day your smile will become a genuine one where you don’t need to fake it anymore, because I can’t say this enough, you deserve a good smile and to feel alive. You’re worth more than every fucking cent in this world. You can let go for today, I got you, you can cry your heart out as much as you want, but don’t let it tear you down and let your emotions control you by giving up. Crying is not weakness. If you still feel alone I dedicate you a song as your friend. “Dusk till Dawn- Zayn feat. Sia (I prefer the slow version)” I hope you can think of me and will remind yourself of my words, I will for sure think of you. In case no one told you and you’re unsure yourself, you’re a good person and I am so happy you’re here. I hope this is enough to stay today, tomorrow will be a new day, a new start, let go now. Three tips that i can think of: Splitters have priority lanes and filter in them which is very powerful Use wood as fuel with input priority u can mix belt with coal Trains are not only a cargo transport it can serve as passenger transport as well u can plan your factory for this
As soon as I learned splitters do this, my mining outposts jumped in efficiency. You basically have an unpowered sorting system right there, and it's glorious
Best way to use anyone else's blueprints, spreadsheets, or any form of coding or programming is: Look at it, learn what it does intent to and how it works, and then modify it to your specific needs and situation.. @@bjarneb8966 Pre bots, you will generally be able to remove and replace things much faster than repairing (for defenses just build another layer and replace when destroyed). You will generally have stacks of the buildings stored around the factory. For disposal, just put in a chest and destroy chest though I believe damaged buildings count as full for crafting. I personally still do manual repairs but I seem to spend more time repairing things than building the factory around midgame.
@someguy ( / @someguy1243 ) maybe if you're in a hurry (trying a speed-run or something?), but those are not really worth stressing over. I'll even pick up and repair later at times, my OCD is better served by fixing stuff than discarding it. ;-) And coaly rocks are a cute bonus if already in my way, but should i go out _looking for_ them?
@@irrelevant_noob They have a low mining time and give you lots of stone and coal, which is what you need early on (furnaces, fuel). Much faster than mining stone and coal patches. Less important once you have started automatically mining patches. But at the start, yes, fast resources and you need the space anyway. It is an optimization tip, really, not a necessity.
I know what you mean to say.... I did use them, I stopped using them, but nowadays I use them again on a small scale.. building compact multi-tasking dedicated factory-groups... To build my own "shopping mall" .. :)
I'm going to make a big rotating track for main storage and just pull things off of it using an endless array of underground belts and filter inserters.
My only tip would be : don't bother deconstructing anything that works. Just let your less optimized factories deplete their inputs while you make a more optimized factory someplace else, preferably closer to resources. I have to admit that I suck at planning trains. To make my life easier and beat my personal record, I simply made a second base, as I could not scale up my first one in a satisfying way. First base had labs, low tier science packs and basic utilities production. Second base had high tech stuff, high tier science packs and an ever expanding engine and circuits pool. I never had to bother with too much train signalling since I was close to resources and I mass produced productivity modules as soon as possible.
One month later, the best advice I could give anyone wanting to start playing factorio ; Don't, it's not a game, it's engineering you're not getting paid enough to do.
What is wrong with my eco friendly factory, using only green modules? I mean, yes, it is 6 times bigger than needed and I did have to burn one whole continent for it, but that few remaining neighbours seem to not mind it at all...
A tip about provider chests: *don't* use provider chests with limited space. Use unlimited storage (later upgrade to buffer) chests with an inserter set to only put items in if the chest contains less than a few stacks of said item. That way, you can set the chest to request any surplus you end up with, so you don't end up with 100 new electric drills stuck in storage limbo every time you deconstruct a depleted mine.
Last one is very true. My girlfriend once commented that it's very noticeable when I've been playing factorio because my desk will be covered in postit notes planing the ratios and layouts for production chains. That a and the dark bags under my eyes...
My 2 cents: When using fluid wagons, pump directly from and to a storage tank. It is lightning fast this way. You can connect inserters wirelessly to the logistic system. This is useful for robot based factories and prevents a buildup of intermediates, so instead of limiting the content of each chest, you are limiting how much is in the whole logistic system, storage chests included.
That's the exact same issue I'm running into on my first playthrough. I got to trains/ blue science with my spaghetti factory so far and while it's definitely very much so possible to complete the game this way, man is it a chore, so much so that I almost want to restart everything
Tip: You will always need more room than you think. Leave some space between builds. You'll think you're being generous. You aren't. Leave more. You'll never regret leaving more space than you needed.
Some things are so obvious after hundreds of hours in Factorio that it's hard to think about them for videos like this It's of course good tip, but I've forgot to add it :/
@McGeoculus You just pile up a lot of materials in (steel) chests when the train isn't there and when the train arrives, the stack inserters pull from the chests and fill it up quickly.
@McGeoculus The point is that the belts stay empty so production doesn't slow down. Or if extracting, it makes sure the train gets emptied even if the belts are too full to accept new materials.
the rainbow puke belts with a bit of everything on them kinda hurt my insides.... not only would it be extremely inefficient in terms of actually moving materials, they would also be able to cause issues when it comes supply lines that don't use perfect ratios of things. if there is an end stop to that particular line, it could fill with items that aren't needed for that line. and god, I' d hate to clean that mess. better to just give up that piece of land and call it a diplomatic peacekeeping accord.
My favorite modpacks in minecraft are the ones with extremely convoluted crafting recipes that make automating the simple things feel very gratifying. Factorio has that in spades and I love it.
A tip I've learned the hard way: dont buffer your production. Factorio is about having stream of stuff produced, I though buffering it was a good idea at first, but it only lead to difficulties to read what you need and use
Buffering is not always bad. It's good when you get into mid-game/Late-game where robots come into play and you replace the chests with passive provider chests so they can deliver iron, copper, circuits and whatever else you need instead of running over main BUS line to pick things up.
@@Wiloxe Yeah sure, buffering is indeed mandatory if you want a perfectly optimized factory. But this is "tactical buffering" that you will learn with experience anyway. Not really a tip you can give to new players. The buffering I was talking about here is the one making sure all your device run all the time, adding storage to never have a blocked belt. This way you'll non stop produce some goods that you're not using as much as you pop them, and wont be able to see when your need overwhelm your production as buffer will be able to compensate for a long time. This is how I end up without any iron in mid/late game, unable to defend against bitters, when my ~1000 chest of iron buffer ran out of stock, letting me know that I was far from being able to produce what I needed :D So my tip should indeed be something like "dont buffer by default, buffer by need" then
@@Damian-rp2iv These kinds of situations sure are harsh when you run into them. (Personally never ever encounterd this issue as I stay alert of my supply statuses most of the time) Only solution to one of these issues would be to have logic added so it will notify you or even send alarm when supply is starting to drain let's say 50% giving you the time to think and plan what you can do to solve this issue. It really depends on the person so if you're knowledgeable enough you can setup logic, if you're alert of your situation enough then it should be fine, but if you neither of these options apply then only option is to have a buffer with supply output stopped and letting it being filled with all overflow production only so in this case you can turn it on when there's a sudden shortage.
@@Damian-rp2iv as long as you buffer only the overflow, it could still be useful, couldn't it? As for your specific case of unexpectedly running out of the buffered iron, that's just calling for a tactical decider+speaker combo. ;-)
One of the best lessons I ever learned about factorio is once you've launched your first rocket with the vanilla game, you're ready to start loading a ton of mods
In my first game I was spacing out my miners like that until I realized the the output rate of my iron mines was getting too slow *long* before I was ever in danger of the iron patch running dry.
I like a two splitter buffer. First one with output priority down the main, and the second one with input priority from the main. Then a chest(s) and inserters. This means the buffer only gets filled when theres an actual over-production and only gets used when there's an actual under-production. Which is especially useful for power buffers, 25.6GJ coal iron chest is a nice compact battery.
Thank you for that lesson. I've played already couple of hours in Factorio and I didn't know where I was wrong with building it. My Factory is practical and allows to create many stuff, but there is so much more to build. And now I realise I thought not big enough. What I really need is mulltiple lines with the same resources instead of just one. From the other hand I am proud that I re-inwent that pattern on my own withouth any tutorial before. These templates of buildinds also looks amazing. I didn't know that I can create a pattern of building and connections and just copy - paste it to another place. very good material - dziekuje
As an RTS player, I had to be reminded that walls exist at all. The meta in most RTS is to use only very few static defenses, in most of them you'd rather tower rush the enemy than to build any in your own base. So I usually try to keep the biters out by killing them ahead of time until around yellow science.
"There is no other game that allows you to expand your factory, city or kingdom in that simple way" Mindustry: Am I a joke to you? The video cool and helpful, thank you for you guides to new players
Prison Architect has copy-able blueprints too, although they used to be limited to very small ones. (Even then, you could still place an outline of where you wanted stuff to go as a different sort of blueprint.) Now you can copy like an entire map as a blueprint. Project hospital lets you make blueprints of specific rooms.
Mindustry added the blueprints features relatively recently, and was a fully functional game for a long time without them. I imagine there are many people who played the game extensively then quit for other games (like Factorio) long before they were added.
The problem with planning too much in factorio is that when you are done with that plan why not double it, why not triple it just keep going forever. I think I need to look at going a bit more hardcore into building lots and lots of mining and smelting because i think I've got like 20 miners atm.
Nice video! really helped me a lot. One small correction. On minute 6:15, spanish subtitles for "Productivity modules in factorio are quite op" says that they are "optional" (opcionales) instead of "op-overpowered" (could simply be left as op since it's a known expression in spanish too)

2 very important things:
-don't stand on train tracks
-produce more red circuits. doesn't matter how much you already have, just make more
I think "produce more x" is all what you do in Factorio
because to make more red circuits you need first more greens/oil to produce those, you need more iron/copper and you also should produce all those machines somewhere in your factory, this is why I love factorio :)
@@Trupen When was the last time you needed 20x chests of wooden power poles?
@@alexs5814 when you needed a particularly expensive way of fuleing your burner inserters.
I always make red circuits factory inside the module that makes research packs, so all I have to do is to have to attach conv. belt with basic resources (copper, iron, plastic etc)
It takes more space for sure, but you don't have to worry after lack of resources after module multiplication.
If you think you have enough iron, you are wrong. Go find more iron
Another thing: Don't be afraid to do remote outposts. A train full of iron plate carries twice as much iron alone as one full of ore.
At the same time, don't be afraid to just build bigger trains to increase throughput of raw ore.
I was doing this from the start (well after I finished off the iron mine near my starting factory) and I was screwed when I learned I needed iron ore for concrete. luckily I didn't need much and it was easy to adapt a single train car to bring in all the iron ore I needed
@@justincarter7954 Haven't gotten as far as concrete, my miners are feeding into smelters before any storage devices. Thanks for the heads up.
"You can press Q to pick up buildings"
Me after 800 hours: "Today I learned a thing".
Also: Effeciencies modules don't just save power, they reduce the amount of pollution you make. It's great if you are constantly being attacked because of pollution.
You can also rotate anything you've already placed by cursoring over it and pressing R without having to pick it up and re-place it.

You place turrets on either side of the narrow route the plant on land plots that are floating islands and not actually connected to the land route so the diplomatic representatives do not have access. This way your power plant will always be safe and out of the way
That sounds awesome.
Or use spider 100% safe
I use this for my nuclear plants. Not that it is really needed, but it simply feels right to place such a sensitive and dangerous object onto an isolated island with limited access routes.
This also helps getting the water in if the power plant in question is nuclear
I recommend using green modules in miners at your outposts, since they greatly reduce the pollution that's produced and outposts are one of the main pollution spreaders. With full green they just won't create any pollution cloud.
Wait, all three modules being green eliminates 100% of the pollution generated?
@@maxwilson7001 Yeah. It goes down to 1 pollution/minute/miner, which is so low that it just gets absorbed by the tiles near the miner and the pollution never spreads
@@jakeread9668 Whoa. That's a game changer
@@maxwilson7001 Yeah it's pretty big, it lets you expand way more without increasing attacks. I don't think many people know about it because hardly anyone uses green modules

My tips:
1. Regularly shaped (train/cityblock) grids are amazing, but also very boring in the long run.
2. Experiment with some logic circuits, it adds a whole new dimension to the game

@@Trupen All wars are for the control of resources.
what if I tould you about reverse insertion optimization
@@Trupen you have yet to see the absolute sociopath that is my friend. I don't think I've ever even *heard* of a quadra steel chest buffer for URANIUM ORE. Who's stack inserters are powered by an entire substation.
There's nothing else to power but 5 inserters
Biggest thing that clicked for me on this game was when I realiized that the fast belts were more about capacity than speed, so if I wanted to fit two yellow belts worth of material in a small space I could use red belt components instead
It took me too long to find this video, but I have five [5] things that you might want to include if you ever do a follow-up video;
-There is a literal sheet of balancers that are tried and true.
So true about iron. I'm just playing for couple of hours, but gosh … everything needs iron.
@@dedymario659 You'll come to understand why a Quadruple Balancer was designed specifically for iron busses soon enough, friend. The Factory must Grow.
I am at that point in time where I use more copper than iron. Both are used intensively
Frankly, the most fun I have in playing Factorio is the "build > frustration > learning" infinite process about any X material I need to produce at scale.
everything needs to be produced at scale in this game ;)
Pro tip: Deconstruction planners are much better than you'd think initially.
You can configure it to only effect ghosts, request slots, and items on ground, which makes it easy to see how many items you need to finish building your factory.
Or flip it to a whitelist, and only mark built stuff for deconstruction (if you performed a partial deconstruction before to place the print)
Thanks for the tips!
Fun tip: produce a bunch of important intermediate products and store them all in a centralized location. That way you can go and collect a ton of them in one place. Also, learn how trains work. SO worth it.
"If something looks stupid, but works, it's not stupid." Making this motto of my life.
Side-buffering as shown here even allows for an expanded length of the system, in case you're not at the stack-inserter/cargo-capacity-upgrade(s) just yet so you'd need to use more than 3 to get back to a full belt.--
Oh, wait, you mean the buffer merely picks up some bits from an *active* tunnel that allows the belt to freely flow below ground. That's probably acceptable, if you can deal with the fact that the output from buffer will only ever go on one specific half of the belt. :-B
Got this game and I've never been so addicted AND overwhelmed. It's odd, but amazing. I love It. Thank you for the tips my dude.
you're welcome, glad I could help you :D
Nuclear power is another part of your factory that can really be optimised with logic.
logic system is complicated for many advance players, so it's even harder for beginners :/

Thank you I'm so happy that I can read comments like this under my videos
Green modules reduce pollution too, so that’s why I use them early game until I can get a good defense system up and running.
That's a brilliant idea

Wow, Thank you
To the person who read this,
It’s been hard for you, I know, and it makes me sad that you don’t see yourself in the way I see you.
Enough with beating yourself up for today, okay?

Use wood as fuel with input priority u can mix belt with coal

1. Look for huge rocks at the start.
2.Don't waste time on manual repairs.
Manual repair of a car far away before you have bots makes sense though.
hey, big noob here, why shouldn't I "waste" time on manual repairs?
@@bjarneb8966 Pre bots, you will generally be able to remove and replace things much faster than repairing (for defenses just build another layer and replace when destroyed). You will generally have stacks of the buildings stored around the factory. For disposal, just put in a chest and destroy chest though I believe damaged buildings count as full for crafting.
I personally still do manual repairs but I seem to spend more time repairing things than building the factory around midgame.
@someguy ( / @someguy1243 ) maybe if you're in a hurry (trying a speed-run or something?), but those are not really worth stressing over. I'll even pick up and repair later at times, my OCD is better served by fixing stuff than discarding it. ;-)
And coaly rocks are a cute bonus if already in my way, but should i go out _looking for_ them?
@@irrelevant_noob They have a low mining time and give you lots of stone and coal, which is what you need early on (furnaces, fuel). Much faster than mining stone and coal patches. Less important once you have started automatically mining patches. But at the start, yes, fast resources and you need the space anyway. It is an optimization tip, really, not a necessity.
The "everything" belts... I died a little inside.
I know what you mean to say.... I did use them, I stopped using them, but nowadays I use them again on a small scale.. building compact multi-tasking dedicated factory-groups... To build my own "shopping mall" .. :)
I laughed so hard. I think I feel my next factory coming up.
I'm going to make a big rotating track for main storage and just pull things off of it using an endless array of underground belts and filter inserters.
The problem with "everything" belts is that it can be difficult to keep an overview of the things that are produced.
I legit thought I was the only one that did this tbh.
that is actually a good idea
One month later, the best advice I could give anyone wanting to start playing factorio ; Don't, it's not a game, it's engineering you're not getting paid enough to do.
I was mind blown when i learned that you can hold down LMB when placing powerlines to automatically put them at max distance.

My 2 cents:
When using fluid wagons, pump directly from and to a storage tank. It is lightning fast this way.
You can connect inserters wirelessly to the logistic system. This is useful for robot based factories and prevents a buildup of intermediates, so instead of limiting the content of each chest, you are limiting how much is in the whole logistic system, storage chests included.

@@Trupen Sounds like the perfect reason to record a Part 2. There's enough material in this comment section for a part 3 even. :D

My favorite modpacks in minecraft are the ones with extremely convoluted crafting recipes that make automating the simple things feel very gratifying. Factorio has that in spades and I love it.
factorio was inspired by modded minecraft :)
This is how I end up without any iron in mid/late game, unable to defend against bitters, when my ~1000 chest of iron buffer ran out of stock, letting me know that I was far from being able to produce what I needed :D
So my tip should indeed be something like "dont buffer by default, buffer by need" then
@@Damian-rp2iv These kinds of situations sure are harsh when you run into them.
As for your specific case of unexpectedly running out of the buffered iron, that's just calling for a tactical decider+speaker combo. ;-)
I've been playing factorio like a tower defense game against the bugs. I've got a huge factory on my save with layered defence walls. It's fun.
every way is good when it's fun for you :D

Приятная пасхалочка, на самом-то деле))

@@Trupen I written it with russian for special :))
one of the greatest lesson of life "if something looks stupid but works , it's not stupid"
thx man for everything
One of the best lessons I ever learned about factorio is once you've launched your first rocket with the vanilla game, you're ready to start loading a ton of mods
"if your neighbours are dead, you don't have to worry about their feelings anymore."
Paraphrased, but yeah, totally get it. Ahaha
Ah another Factorio video, perfect saturday evening
In Factorio on assembler is never enough, you have to literally build a manufactory lines :)
Congrats on 10K! Hope you get to 100K subs!
Thanks
When you played Factorio on Friday evening and you didn't even notice when you were late for school on Monday
Anyway, the factory must grow!!
indeed The factory must grow!
As an RTS player, I had to be reminded that walls exist at all.
The meta in most RTS is to use only very few static defenses, in most of them you'd rather tower rush the enemy than to build any in your own base.
So I usually try to keep the biters out by killing them ahead of time until around yellow science.
True true, coming from aoe4. Tower rushing in factorio is really effective too. Spamming turrets on tops of nests in early game is very powerful.
This has got to be the most useful channel for Factorio on the platform, your vids are amazing Trupen!
Trupen does not get enough credit for absolutely hilarious. So glad I found this, and Factorio.
"There is no other game that allows you to expand your factory, city or kingdom in that simple way"
Mindustry: Am I a joke to you?
The video cool and helpful, thank you for you guides to new players
I didn't know there are blueprints in mindustry, I was playing this game some time ago
10:25 for all those who don't know, he said thanks for watching.
Спасибо, советы реально ценные! Буду проще относиться к игре и не заморачиваться на ошибках.
I'm glad you found something useful in my video :D
I am happy we have such an awesome creator like Trupen for such a treasure of a game
"Without neighbors, you don't need to worry about their feelings anymore" lmao
4:16 Full italiano spagethi style - that sums my "design" perfectly.
When someone plays over my savefile:
- "WHO TOUCHED MY SPAGHETT?!"
On minute 6:15, spanish subtitles for "Productivity modules in factorio are quite op" says that they are "optional" (opcionales) instead of "op-overpowered" (could simply be left as op since it's a known expression in spanish too)
This game has kept me and my bf from getting sleep at a regular time hahah, we gotta make sure our busted but awesome factory runs like a beast its not efficient yet but we love our factory
So factorio can also connect people together?
I though Factorio is only for destroying relationships xd
Damn ur bf got hella lucky
Transport belts can be used instead of pipes. In this case, the pumps are not needed at all. But you need a huge number of barrels.
Thanks, I'm gonna use this tip in one of my videos :D
before tanker cars I had a nice little blueprint for filling and emptying barrels of liquid, and then load them into trains for long distance transport. I might do it again just for the fun of it.
7:25 h-hey, that's mine..! 0_0
Great tips on another note 9:49 - 9:52 is the best line I've heard in awhile.
“If it looks stupid, but it works, it is not stupid.”
God that’s fire
Blue underground belts cost less than normal blue belts if you have either a 7 or 8 tile gap, and the're about the same for a 6 tile gap
wow Thanks I didn't know that
