Note about the lack of discount - it's actually always been a part of developers' policy, they never do that. Their reasoning is that they priced their game according to what they believe it's honestly worth and would rather see that than raising the price only to then discount it regularly.
And they don't want anyone to ever potentially hit buyer's regret from buying it right before a sale they didn't know about. It has a pretty in-depth demo and you know what the price will always be.
Add to this the fact that it's easy to pirate anyway, but you need to buy it to get mods. So people who can't afford to spend much money on games still have both the opportunity to get fully addicted to it and a reason to buy it anyway.

My first game's factory was surprisingly small, simple, and very spread out. This was an absolutely horrible mistake as it was also incredibly inefficient. Finally got to playing a 2nd game after a couple years, my first base was ok, but I was having issues mass producing piercing rounds as I was going for the Raining Bullets achievement, so wanted to make sure I had a dependable supply for a long time. Made a new base a bit to the west, with its own source of Iron and Copper, first dedicated that factory to bullets and other weaponry foremost. Then 10 hours later it was my new home, and my old base was made completely obsolete in producing anything except bullets and mall type items. For my new base I tried to start it with a main bus system, 5 mintues later the buses had at least 5 different turns and the whole place became spaghetti central. And thats how I know I am a true Factorio player now.

And at £21 the game is a steal considering the 100s of hours you'll put into it
Let's be honest here: the game is worth *WAY MORE* than $30, even when looking at the older versions
500 hours in at $20 during alpha was a steal, and it's still a steal now at $30 at 1.0 release.
Add to this the fact that it's easy to pirate anyway, but you need to buy it to get mods. So people who can't afford to spend much money on games still have both the opportunity to get fully addicted to it and a reason to buy it anyway.

There is, it's a bunch of gears that have to be immersed in saltwater because if they un-rust they start projecting noise into your brain until you feed it more metal at an accelerating rate.
