  • This is my review on the DOREMIDI High Speed USB Host Box (UMC-21). This box converts USB MIDI to 5 pin MIDI; I got one so I can connect keyboards & MIDI controllers that only have USB MIDI out ports to the 5 pin MIDI IN port on my Yamaha CK88 stage piano (and it works great!)

    Im new to MIDI and all the adapters & boxes & software available - and my workflow is not typical* too so its easy to get lost and annoyed when things dont seem to work! Your video really helps clarify the necessities of power/data/midi transfer!! Im seeking a UMH21 now. Thnx. *Im using wireless midi transfer from guitar to PC AND iPad Pro2023 and to amps and mixing desk - which is difficult in terms of compatibility often. Thanks again!

      @@PianoTone I am planning to test it with my P-45 when a Hammond M-Solo arrives. I was going back and forth for a while but I finally decided to get M-Solo today.
      It is all thanks to your reviews. I will be learning jazz on it. P-45 will be for home piano practice and will try to use it as a MIDI keyboard for M-Solo. I may get access to a church pipe organ as well. I got a few books about playing Hammond organ (also for liturgical preludes). I will be decide about getting MIDI controller with more appropriate keybed after gaining some experience with different organs.
      Thank you again,
      Michael

    I use one as a usb midi bay from a Novation Circuit Tracks to sequence external synths with a little 4 port usb hub as a lot of modules don’t have midi thru etc.
    Note : Dore has said it has a 4 device limit with an external usb hub . Not sure if or why this would be a limit , but as the circuit only has 4 poly midi tracks ( the drum samples send midi too but only gate style on off on a fixed note ) have no way to push and test that .
    Another tip : If using a hub and if the devices are powered from usb then using a powered hub can be a must if your devices draw more then the HMH can provide .
    Cheers .

    Pls help. I'm using the Dore Midi Hub with Akai MPK Mini Play. Using 5 pin midi, In to Thru on separate Dore midi box, Out to In on SQ64 brain (I have other instruments going into the THru box too. Channel 1 works find, the literature says the MPK uses that along with channel 10. BUT, 3-4 other instrument sounds are coming from the MPK including drums and bass. My bass is set the channel 6 on the SQ and drums to ch 8. I know it's the MPK sounds by using mutes on the SQ. I'm guessing it's Omni or another midi setting on the MPK but I can't find info on this. The USB goes from the Dore Hub to the MPK. Thank you! Great work here!

      Hey there; I know nothing about Volca Keys so I can't guarantee anything, but I do see a 5 pin MIDI in port so I would assume it would work fine to convert your Akai's USB MIDI out into the 5 pin version for the Volca.

      @PianoTone  11 місяців тому +2

      Hi there! If you mean to use one to control the other I don’t think that’s possible; it’s my understanding that usb MIDI is out only not in (you need a midi in on a device for it to be controlled by another device.

    • @PianoTone

      No I don’t think so - the usb MIDI ports on most devices (I think) only send they don’t receive.

    The DOREmidi USB midi host can control the IKmultimedia ToneX One if I use a midi controller pedal? Ex.: Morningstar MC6 > DOREmidi > ToneX One

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  7 днів тому +2

      To be honest I’m not sure - I’m not at all familiar with those pedals. All the doremidi does is merge MIDI signals between 5pin and USB MIDI into a single MIDI 5 pin out if that helps

    Hi Tony! Thank you so much for this review! I’m wondering if there exists such a device that would allow me to trigger the sounds on my 61 key Roland E-X50 with my 88 key Cossain foldable digital piano, even though they both have USB midi instead of the traditional five pin midi? Sadly my Google searches didn’t turn up any promising results. I contacted several music stores including my local Long and McQuade, and they weren’t aware of anything that would serve the purpose and that didn’t involve the intervention of my computer or my iPad. If it is possible, and if you are aware of such a device, could you please provide an Amazon link to such device? I am also located in Canada. Thank you so much in advance for any assistance you are able to provide!

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  15 днів тому +1

      Unfortunately you need a 5 pin MIDI in to be able to receive MIDI from another device. The DOREMIDI host converts the other way around (FROM USB MIDI TO 5 PIN) but you need the 5 pin IN on the EK-50 to receive. I'm not even sure how a pc in between would help (I guess there must be some software that can modify and send the signal back out some how).
      Sorry I'm not more help! Thanks for checking out the channel, feel free to subscribe

      @@PianoTone Thank you so much Tony! In fact, on my iPad Mini 6 (which has a USBC port), I have an app called One Man Band, which among other things, allows you to trigger some of the sounds from one USB midi keyboard to another, as long as they're both plugged into the iPad via a USBC OTG adapter. In the app's settings, you can then set the Midi In to one keyboard, and Midi Out to the other. I say some of the sounds, because you have to choose the voice to trigger from the software side, and there's a limited amount of instrument sounds that you can choose from with this setup. The other thing is that it can really take a toll on the iPad's battery when both keyboards are connected at once. Anyway, thank you so much once again for getting back to me, I appreciate it very much. Keep up the great work! :)

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  3 місяці тому +2

      I actually never owned the 2 of those at once, I traded the 61 back in on the 88. Not sure why I'd bother connecting those two together given that they have the identical sounds, but you sure could if you wanted to!

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  3 місяці тому +1

      Where is the pc connected? The box is meant to take USB MIDI (from a keyboard or a MIDI device) and 5 pin MIDI (from a keyboard or a MIDI device) and merge it to a 5 pin MIDI out (to go to usually another MIDI device like a keyboard). Are you trying to send the MIDI out with an adapter to a pc? Or are you connecting the PC to the USB IN on the device (which means you are trying to send MIDI FROM the PC TO another device?)
      Also FYI the UMH10 is only the older USB version I think 1.1; the UMH20 is USB 2.0
