Casio CDP-S160 Review

      They’re both great choices! They both have good sounds and good key action. Casio Advantages: - can run on batteries (portability) - all functions are labelled on the keyboard so you don’t need an app - has a jazz organ (if you care) Yamaha Advantages: - better strings voice - built in audio interface (you can make audio recordings way easier including piano videos just with your phone - with the Casio you need to buy an external audio interface box) - compatible with Smart Pianist app (awesome app, adds a lot of useful functionality) Hope that helps! Hey Tony, in your opinion, which audio interface would work best? I have an iPhone and a Yamaha P-125a

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone День тому

      I use a UA Volt and it works nicely: geni.us/zkf9w I used to use (and really liked) a Roland GO:Mixer Pro - it's a bit $$$ but the cool thing is it also works as a mixer (you can have your 125A and a mic and another iPhone/iPad streaming music in and even a friend playing guitar all at the same time). Given your 125a has no audio input, you can use the Roland one just for practice too (connect your piano, a mic, an iphone/tablet/pc to the aux in and your headphones to the out and practice hearing everything at once). And it can run on batteries. geni.us/TcWs The most popular one out there is the Focusrite Scarlett - I've never owned one but everyone says they're great: geni.us/cDBVze The UA Volt and Focusrite both only allow the piano to be connected, the Roland allows a bunch of stuff. To use any of these, you will need 2xTS 1/4" instrument cables (just normal guitar cables) to connect your piano to the interface. Hope that helps!

    Hey Tony, unfortunately, i have the P-125a and the app didn’t support the piano. Do you know of any other apps that can do the exact same as rec n share? (Record and have a high quality sound)

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone День тому

      It’s not a function of the app it’s the piano - the P-125a doesn’t have an audio interface built into the usb port (the P-125 and P-225 do). So to record a piano video or direct audio you will need an external audio interface like a focusrite scarlett. You connect the LR line outs from the piano to the interface and then the interface to the pc/phone/ipad. Hope that helps! Thanks for checking out the channel feel free to subscribe

    What is the downweight of the keyboard action, especially when comparing white and black keys, Tony? Are the keys short (downweight close to the fulcrum)? Thank you, Michael Ps. I am surprised that you have not reviewed your new Hammond.

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone 2 дні тому

      Not sure what the downweight is; it's very similar to the Privia PX-S in feel, but because the PX-S has the extra software assisted sensor, it's not quite as responsive as the PX-S (but it's still a bit on the light side, and I still prefer this to the Roland action). And yes, Casio did the same thing with this action as with the Privia. and weighted the black keys slightly lighter than the white to compensate for the extra bit of heaviness due to the compact depth. But as with the Privia action, doesn't affect my playing at all. (It bugs some people, some people shrug and say "no big deal")

    Never played a Casio weighted keyboard, but I generally like Casio products. I had a CTK-3200 way back and the action was much better than my way more expensive Yamaha at the time. The GHS action on the P45 didn't impress me at all. But I guess it might be better on higher end GHS models. I will probably have a chance to try P225 soon which has the new GHC action.

    I have the Casiotone CTS1 which is pretty good for like 200 bucks & change USD; it would of been great had Casio built it with key weighted action, & had removed some of the voices of which in my opinion aren't very good in order to cut cost. what I like about the Casio line is that there is a setting to set the sustain to automatic so for a beginner they don't have to fuss with the pedal . Although, I have a pedal , I still set the keyboard to automatic & use to pedal to play soft piano I was looking at the Casio CDP-S160 , but I doubt I would invest in it..

      Depends what you want to do. To connect the 1100 and send MIDI data to an app on your laptop, you would use the USB port and a USB cable. To send audio from your piano to your laptop you would use the L/R line outs with audio cables to an external audio interface box (like a Focusrite Scarlett) and then connect that box's output via USB to your laptop.

    Hey, would you still advise this piano? I'm also adult beginner, but from "zero". Deciding between kawai ES 120 and Casio 1100 or 5000. I tried es 120 and s1100 in store, but I dont have exp at all. Both were "better", than roland or yamaha to me. The main criteria is as silent as possible, dont care about speakers at all (have audtio interface with midi), mobility also not important, but in the future this opinion could be changed... Sound on YT is also best for casio and kawai (both). So probably the action is main goal to look at. ES 120 overall the best, but px-s1100 is lighter and shorter pivot could be maybe better to my not big hands, also I have half-working pinky finger on right hand. Kawai is just a bit more expensive, but not as much. (525$ for casio and 600$ for kawai). But I also read and watched about PX-s5000. It costs 900$, but as I heared - they fixed all issues with the action and its just became better overall, more silent etc (which is most important criteria to me). Did you try it? Could you give me some thoughts from your experience for my case? thank you :)

    Actually i have a few questions about the keys of ck61. From my experience in my local shop, most of the black keys make this rather plasticcy noise. So is this normal for this keyboard and will it affect the life expectancy of the keys?

    Nice Informative video!. I really like my Keylab MK3 61 its my second controller, my first being a Korg Triton Traktile 49key, (which a got for a real bargain in a shop flash sale). The Korg is great, (once you get past the driver hassles with the provided korg universal driver!), but requires a certain amount of effort to get to work correctly with my chosen DAW, (Ableton live 12). The Keylab MK3 on the other hand is an absolute breeze to use, with total integration with both Ableton and the "fantastic" Analog lab 5, and also works perfectly with other plugins i use, but with the inclusion of the MIDI Control Centre everything is completely programable easily as you say in the video, it even has a drawbar mode which is great. So all in all, with included software, integration capabilities, and just general usefulness of the controller, its a no brainer. I would however recommend you get the 61 or 88 note if they are within your budget, as the extra octaves make a lot of difference when it comes down to laying down tracks with ease.

    Hi I know that it can play also midi files I was wondering which GM Sound Bank does it use?!… the first GM, the GM2, XT… And is it fast to load a midi file and can we play along with it, does it have a good Drum kit, I normally use the Jazz kit, and the brush kit is it good… The Finger Bass and the Walking Bass are they realistic, and of course let’s not forget the old and warm Organs does it have the desirable Hammond B3… what about Electric piano are they any good, is it any thing near the Fender Rhoads… Best regards from Funchal

      Hi there! I actually sold the EK a couple years ago, but it was an awesome keyboard. I never loaded MIDI files so not sure about that, and I have no idea what MIDI sound bank it uses; the Rhodes sound was good and I used various walking bass sounds alot in the left hand with piano in the right. what about the metronome ?

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone 8 днів тому

      There is one; I never use metronomes when I play, I always play along with drumbeats (they not only keep you in time, but they also add what a metronome does not which is the "feel" of a song). But there is a metronome (on pretty much every keyboard). Thanks for checking out the channel, feel free to subscribe

    If you were to choose an keyboard (or controller) solely to sit on your desk to function as a midi controller based exclusively on key-action. Which one would you pick? (also consider the space it will take on your desk). Thanks.

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone 9 днів тому

      To be honest I don’t use midi often, and as such haven’t tested many midi controllers. Once again I would recommend getting a fully weighted action that you like for piano pieces, or a semi weighted action you like for organ. Pretty much every keyboard now sends MIDI, so whatever keyboard has the action you like would be a good choice. If you’re an advanced piano player and want to send the most accurate midi, then something like a Roland with triple sensor (vs dual on many Yamahas) may send more accurate MIDI velocity signals - but you have to like the action too (I find Roland PHA4 to be heavy and “mushy” but many people love it)

  • @vcrosato
    @vcrosato 9 днів тому

    Nice video! Which action do you like the most CK88 or Numa Compact's 2x?

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone 9 днів тому

      That's a big "depends". For purely piano/electric piano, the CK88 is way better (fully weighted and graded Yamaha action). But for organ (which is most of what I play) the fully weighted action isn't great. The Numa's action (semi-weighted) is basically a great compromise if you play both organ and piano (it's adequate for playing piano pieces expressively, but is actually pretty good for organ). So it depends what you're after.

      @@PianoTone Thank you very much for answering my questions! I'm after a midi controller with at least 73 keys, that have a nice keybed and take the least space on my desk. If I can take it for a gig (like compact2 or ck88 it's a big plus) but my main goals are great keybed on smaller amount of space. The other equipment I have it's the LX-705 roland which I love the keybed. Any suggestions will be much appreaciated thanks again!

      @@PianoTone Thanks for the reply. The grooves seem not to find a lot of love, although I thought they can be quite cool when using them with filters and effets, the mute function, playing along with arpeggiators, and especially making a set of several grooves with different effects in the registration memory, so I can easily switch between them in realtime. They are a bit gimmicky, but if I could load my own grooves they would become much more useful for me.

      @@PianoTone Just trying to make use of the new E473 😆... The grooves remind me a bit of the old tracker days. Of course it's not the same. But some are kinda cool. Using the registration memory, it's possible to switch between arbitrary parts of arbitrary grooves. That allows for some quite nice transitions. It also allows to use different effects in one session without too much hassle. I also often switch off some of the tracks in the different registration slots, als I can then switch them on during the build-up of a groove.
