    Hey Pete, you NEED to get the Yamaha BT-01. That thing is a game changer. I did a live gig tonight using AUM for the first time (I preset 7 or 8 plugins that I would choose between for sounds). Triggered using Bluetooth MIDI and everything worked perfectly. For those interested, the Yamaha BT-01 is definitely worth the investment! (I do not get paid by Yamaha. LOL)...

    Thanks for posting this video. Very informative for someone new to the world of MIDI! I inherited an old Korg SG-1D keyboard. I think this solution should work for me (USB/DIN connector) but the Korg also has a THRU port and some switches for Transmit Channel and Receive Channel. There appear to be 16 channels for each. How do I set those?

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  5 років тому +1

      Hmmmm..... I must admit that I use MiDI in quite a basic way. I think this might be more relevant when you are sending and receiving multiple MIDI channels as opposed to just using the keyboard as an input for virtual instruments. It should be just plug and play in terms of using it to trigger sounds.

    Hey Pete, I have a piano with Midi In/Out. I know the Midi Out is working 100%, never used Midi In yet so I can't say for sure but I assume it also works. Questions:
    1) Can I connect such a cable to only the piano's midi out, essentially only connecting one of the midi ends?
    2) Does the USB light on yours light up already when you only have the USB connected but not the midi? Reason I'm asking is because I got a similar (but different brand) cable yesterday simply can't get it to work at all. None of the LEDs are lighting up at all. I tried different USB ports on my PC already and also on my tablet.

      @PeteJohnsMusic  Рік тому

      Hey there. Yes, you can totally use for just MIDI out from a keyboard. That’s how I use mine.
      And the issue with it not working? I’ve found that cheaper cables are super unreliable which is why I recommend the Roland/Edirol version. It’s a little more expensive but everyone I’ve recommended it to has had success.

    Hi Pete. Thanks for all the great guidance. Have you found an issue with the level transmitted by the midi keyboard to GarageBand virtual instruments? Using the Roland um-one (thanks for the suggestion), my Yamaha p-70 digital piano (c2010) is connected to my iPad Pro (2018) via a powered usb-c hub that connects to a focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (which connects to the iPad). I’m having two issues using virtual instruments in GarageBand iOS. First, the input (gain?) level is considerably lower than the level i get using the touchscreen (even when I really whack the piano, which has weighted keys to get maximum velocity). This is worse for some instruments eg bass guitar. I’ve been through the Yamaha user manual and there doesn’t seem to be any way of adjusting midi output levels, which was suggested in one article I found. I can address this in the mix to an extent by duplicating instruments and maxing out the output level but that isn’t a great solution. The second issue is that the drum sounds are very different (not just in terms of level but sound also) when played via midi keyboard vs using touchscreen. I’d be really grateful for any guidance you could give on this. Unfortunately, I don’t have a second midi keyboard to try out to see if the issue comes from the Yamaha (hopefully not!). Thanks for all your great work; I really appreciate it. Martin

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  3 роки тому +2

      Hey there Martin. So, the MIDI level is a weird one, as it should default to using the standard velocity, sending a maximum velocity note when hit at full velocity on the keyboard? This has been the case with all of my keyboards at least.
      The drums one can be a bit tricky to get sorted, but what I eventually did was label the keys with the drums once I had determined which key plays what drum, as I show in this video - ua-cam.com/video/RANCX1nnR6g/v-deo.html

    • @martoneill
      @martoneill 3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Pete - appreciate you taking the time to answer. This is a bit of a head-scratcher; I’m coming to the conclusion the issue must be with the midi output of the Yamaha piano. In addition to the low level across the baord, it is producing drum sounds that just aren’t included in the on-screen drum-kit (which is doubly weird as the keyboard doesn’t have drums itself). Anyhow, I have more than enough ways of making noise so I won’t get too hung up on it!
