Unusable Package Service is my acronym for UPS. You will never get to use one of their packages 2nd hand. All packages come looking like they were used in the opening of the movie Pet Detective in the elevator door scene opening and closing on it hearing glass smashing about 8 times. Hysterical accuracy so I avoid them like the plague.
Many years back Cole's Power Models had a kit to make a Holt H75 engine which was castings you machined and such. Quite a project. Also, larger at about 77 cc. I considered making one to see if it would have enough power for a one-inch scale "doodlebug" which would be a gas-mechanical powered railroad car. I did buy a set of their plans to study first, and they were extensive. Alas, I did not proceed. Holt 75 tractors were made 1913 to 1924 and a couple thousand used in WWI.
Great video as usual, however id noticed, The shaft the fan sits on is bent at 6:56, oil is pouring out of the lower side of the pushrod at 11:48 and something melting around the spark plug boot at 12:02, whatever hit this engine did more damage than just the fan shroud and radiator..
It looked like when he added the water to the radiator he didn't turn the engine over to circulate water through the rest of the system (hoses or engine), so it was probably low on coolant once it ran for a bit and got hot.
Is an amazing working model of a classic Tractor engine. I would love to have one being a collector myself. Is unfortunate there was damage to the fan shroud by the vendor or manufacturer. You did a great job repairing it. Enjoyed this video very much!
FYI, the California agricultural museum in Woodland, CA just north of Sacramento has many antique Holts and Best crawlers amongst just about any antique tractor. It's free admission and is worth a drive from almost anywhere in the west.
I am so glad you repaired the cowling: I have often cursed myself for attempting shipping damage repairs instead of returning the damaged piece: I thought I was the only one!
Shipping can be a nightmare,I had a metal band saw delivered and it was supposed to come by a specialist heavy carrier but they used a cheaper option and the guy couldn't lift it so he tipped the box end over end all the way up my driveway! I had to sent the CCTV video of it to the carrier to claim for the damages
Pretty cool and a nice repair but I can't see that damage from shipping with all that foam around it and no damage to the box. Maybe the damage came from the place where it was assembled, more likely they just put a bent shroud on it.
Suggesting something, use oak blocks and dowels when working metal as small as that, you wont leave scratches and crap all over your work. aside from that, Nice Job!
This is a REVERSE ROTATION engine. Look at which way the drill turns the engine at 11:19. The output shaft, not the accessory end of the engine, should turn clockwise when seen from the back of the engine, which on rear-drive cars is typically right behind the radiator. This is how aircraft reciprocating engines in the United States work. When you are sitting in the cockpit of a light aircraft with a piston engine, you will note that when the engine starts you will see the blades go from left side of the airplane to the right side of the airplane, this is standard rotation. There are some Honda car engines that spin the wrong way, and the British and Russians have produced some reverse rotation engines, but generally they spin clockwise seen from behind the engine, output shaft forward. He contends that the fan and water pump spin the wrong way; I suggest that he is starting the engine backwards~
Being this is internal combustion- how come no oil? And it would be nice if we all had access to the laser for cutting gaskets as you did. This isn’t an affordable hobby for most of us.😢
Also that don't look like shipping damage, I just don't see how that could have been damaged during shipping, cause it seemed to be very snug in the Styrofoam, I think that damage was done at the factory cause when it's packed in Styrofoam like that then there's no way that damage could be done from shipping cause the Styrofoam would cushion it from getting jarred around.
@@AJRestoration as a mechanic, i often see problems other wouldnt catch. And maybe should be at first, i have watched your video 5 times, Its awesome engine model ❤️
It’s weird that the damage was only there and nowhere else there’s parts of that engine that are much higher and that seems like the most substantial packaging in that area and the Styrofoam wasn’t damaged
My thoughts exactly, I suspect they sent me a previously damaged returned item, since the packaging was still intact showing no indents reflecting the damage on the engine.
@@AJRestoration what one can see in this video is the difference between a packaging that IS good vs. a packaging that LOOKS good. This foam looks professional, but is bad packaging here. Think about packaging in the same way as you think about car shock absorbers. If you put too stiff ones on, the ride will be harsh. If you prevent movement of the cargo within the package, it’s like there was no packaging at all, every shock will transfer directly to the load. What could be good packaging here: a hard foam cut out so, that it makes contact only with the base board on the bottom and the cylinder block on the top, leaving 1cm / 0.5in gap around all the weaker components. This hard foam carrier should be wrapped in something like bubble wrap, that has a lot of ‘give’ so that the hard foam cell is suspended inside the box in a soft cushion to catch shocks due to drops. When you look at the outer package at the beginning of the video you will notice, it was not heavily damaged, so all the issues are due to a simple drop from hand height, something that’s absolutely normal in package handling.
I would have returned it, you should have NOT tried to repair it. Now if you have problems, the seller has, by law to refuse the exchange or refund. After all you paid good money for a complete working model. By the way if the seller sees this video you are screwed.
Serious, you used a lot of tool mostly Electric, its not necessary with those small dimensions ( overkill) And if you really need a laser to cut a gasket, i would not let you do any restauration.
$1500.00 ,,,,, you think you could've got your money back? Doubt it. Rubber "O" ring for a piston ring. How much run time do you think you will get? They sent you 4 O rings with the kit for replacement. Nice video anyway,

That is REALLY impressive. You even perfectly duplicated the texture of the factory finish.
Great save! That unit sounds like a million bucks!

I like that micro electric screwdriver
Love the 1920's era appearance of the engine.
Also the flap on the exhaust is not supposed to be flopping around like that so need some adjustments

Saw you add fuel and coolant but not lubricant.
@@cressmerrill7280 I did add oil, It somehow did not make it in the video. Just checked the video, Seems like I skipped it.

Automotive lubricant for gasoline engines works well for your coolant system. ( The green-coded stuff )

It looks real good after renovation 👏👏
I think so too!
i was hoping you made a plexiglass side cover to watch the crankshaft, but was just a gasket good video
That is a great idea actually. I never thought of that.
That's as COOL AS AN ICEBERG!!
I gotta get one of them pen screwdriver thingys.

I can't believe that was down to shipping. Must have been bent before it was even fitted.

You should have called them and told them that it was damaged during shipping and see if they will replace it.
A knock which damaged the engine so badly would surely have damaged the cardboard box and the polystyrene as well?
Where did you get the little cordless screwdriver?
Did the shipper or carrier reimburse you for the damage?

I guess that's what happens when a company cheaps out on proper packaging.
The packaging was quite sturdy with a massive foam buffer. I would say this one is on the courier company mishandling the package.
