different car review hi, I’ve got a problem with my Bmw f10 2012 model, basically every other day I have to refill up the water coolant tank and is something I never used to do before, so I went to the garage to get it checked and they said that there isn’t any Water leaking sign through the pipes or anything like that so they told me to just to change the water coolant tank, so I’ve changed the water coolant tank but bear in mind it wasent a brand new I bought it of another Bmw the same model as mine which means it was used, and I didn’t think that would cause any problems but still I’m still having the same problem, what would you recommend me? Do you think is best to go to Bmw dealer and buy a brand new water coolant tank?
Ahmed Saciid Hi, I’m just curious what the cause of the problem was. Would you share that with us? Tx in advance! I very much doubt that if you exchange any non-leaking part that that would have helpt. If there’s no leakage visible on the outside (did they use trace fluid?) than it must have leaked on the inside 😬. But you should have noticed that I think.
With how many common and *expensive* faults the 5 series has, it's probably not a bad idea to look at one with more miles/km on it with a rich service history with most common faults already fixed rather than getting a low miler and then paying thousands to fix the upcoming problems.
IYSISNASIR not yet still searching I particularly want 2012 535D black in n out sports seats paddle shifts wide sat nav xenon vision package varibale damper control Msport basically fully loaded. average price is £19k+ for 2012 under 80k miles FSH. fingers crossed.
I was very pleased with my own 2011 520d Touring, which I had from 2013-2021. It had the sport automatic, the fantastic comfort seats and adaptive drive. Over my ownership, the main issues were broken front springs (a real hassle to replace due) and rear air springs (easy to replace). I went through a couple of sets of brake discs and pads front and rear, which is normal wear. I had to replace some electrical connectors to the electric handbrake actuator (which was because I removed it wrongly), but that was a small job. I also experienced water seeping in through the rear door inner linings (glue dries up), which apparently happens to a lot of these cars. But all in all, I had a lot of good motoring from this car, which did not once let me down over the course of nearly 8 years. And somewhat surprisingly, I found it relatively easy to work on it myself.
Hi bro,can you please tell me approximately yearly how much will maintenance cost to have this car? I can afford max 3k€ but don't know will be enough. Also i have in plan 530d.
i had a 520d from Feb 2011, i had the car for 3 years and put 80000 km on it, without it causing me any problems, so i would recommend getting a well kept one
@@andre5282 had head gasket and coolant hose replaced . And as preventive measure was to get the valve stem sealed. It’s something the f10 550i is known for .
Nice review and very accurate. I have a 5 year old F11 with 90k miles on it. It’s a brilliant car, but multimedia system crashes every few hours when it’s cold, and I have had to replace the air suspension bags (the latter I did myself with Arnott replacements for £300). Apart from that I’ve had a coolant leak (£100 fix from an independent). Changed to normal tyres as run flats are rubbish. Apart from that I love it, very comfortable, quiet and even my 520d has some grunt left when fully loaded with adults, luggage and a bike rack. Just don’t assume that you have to get it serviced by BMW, as they are ridiculously expensive, and will always in my experience, try to charge you to replace half worn parts early- seriously oil, filters and brakes are an easy job at home, and use an independent for nearly everything else!
Bunch of double talk here. There is only ONE WAY to buy a BMW: You find one that just got off the 3 year or 4 year lease, buy it for half what it cost new, and make sure it has the factory extended warranty for 6 years or 100,000 miles. When the warranty starts to expire you get rid of it and get another.......FUN DRIVING, LOW COST, and while plenty of repair bills, BMW pays for them not you! Buying a German car without warranty is a bad idea....the lesson will be very costly..........end of story......
Dante I. BMW are very hard to work because you have to strip away a lot of stuff to gain access to the gasket or hose to replace. Plus the way the fittings are position you need specialized tools to take them off. A normal valve gasket leak takes 2 hours on a Japanese brand, on the BMW N55 engine same job takes 9-12 hours to do!
I bought a 2011 528xi and I feel in love with it I can’t believe I got it under 10k very well cared for car no smoker and none of the unnecessary extras just enough to keep me comfortable great review

Got my 2011 535i 3 months ago and LOVE IT!! Previous owners kept in it wonderful condition and past the torch to me. Some things i wanted to add was: I got some things programmed into my car (digital speedometer, close mirrors, trunk and windows with fob and much more) and now my trunk has problems closing in severe cold whether or when I leave my car for a couple days in cold weather. Besides that, its perfect! ALSO FOR NEW BMW OWNERS, DO NOT GO TO BMW FOR MAINTENANCE CHECKUPS, WORK OR REPAIRS! THEY WILL BLOW UR POCKETS!
Need to correct some information N52 : Vanos defect, Valvetronic defect N20 : Timing chain defect which manufactured from 2012~2015 N47/57 : Timing chain defect which manufactured from 2011~2015
I have a Black 2004 E60 525i. LOVE this car. Looks like new. I have 140,000 and getting the hard downshift. Going to spend $300 on Solenoid replacement and Mechatronic sleeve, hoping it fixes it. It rides as well as any new car I've driven. Looking at it in the parking lot -- it still outclasses most cars!
I’ve owned loads of BMW E60s and they have been fantastic cars but obviously have their issues, I now have a F10 2011 and must admit I really like it, really nice car to drive and love the shape of it.
I bought a used f10 with 113,000 miles on it. Two owners. now its at 123,000 and so far only minor issues. turbo boost solenoid, oil pan gasket leak, rubber faring below windshield. Other than that normal oil change and spark plug change. And a gradual transmission fluid change. shes a beast with average sports cars. 535i m sport. I agree that this f10 is almost timeless and beautiful in appearance. I paid cash and bought a good warranty.
@@wolfxman69 no. Engines is faulty, another one costs 5000 euros plus price for replacement. Big issues with crankshafts, timing chains, turbos, active steering, active suspension. 535d was biggest mistake in my life(car cost then 23k.). Now driving G30 2d b47, love it.

I’ve owned an early production (2010) model year 2011 535xi for nearly 8 years. The car has 99k miles and has been free of problems save one that I believe is common. The trunk release goes out on a lot of these cars leaving you w/o access. In my case the car was rear ended literally the day after failing and was repaired as a part of sheet metal repair. The run flat tires on the car are a disaster. They bend rims AND they are worthless when flat...I know. A friend sold these cars (BMW) for 7 years saying the tires were the most common complaint and that factory reps ignored concerns saying they were here to stay. All that said it has been a very comfortable and well performing car. Hope this helps if you’re considering one.
hkc2003 What size tires are on the car? I have 17” on my E60. Drives excellent with run flats. However on normal tires at high speed (150km/h 90M/h) the becomes unstable. My tyrecenter confirmed that the car really needs run flats.
I purchased a 2014 535D about a year ago, and love this car...I have had no issues at all, it has all the packages except lane change. I changed the Tires because run flats ride bad. Car is in excellent shape, took it to the dealer and they said the same, just riding and having fun. I also purchased the extended warranty just in case. Zooming with a smile baby!
@@adamredmond6255Any chance you're still driving this? I've been having a very difficult time deciding between the 535i or 535d. I really am considering swapping to diesel, but I'm really unsure.
My 2011 F11 520d has really only had a technical problem with both rear suspension bellows. Both were changed under warranty, however. My only real disappointment is with paint blistering on the original 17 inch rims (236 style). They have been used as winter wheels and clearly cannot take road salt, even though they have been regularly washed and waxed. I am now changing them for original 327 style wheels.
I have 525xd - currently it has 241k km, so far, apart from maintenance, I had to change high pressure turbo, Kardan clutch, dust covers for the rear shock absorbers and both front homokinetic joints. I have no coolant or oil leaks, but one can hear a wushing sound from the timing chain at 1500 rpm - bmw service told me it is not a big deal. All and all it's a good car, but if you go for bi-turbo Borg Warner set-up - expect problems with the high-pressure turbo without warning.
@@RidingWithGerdas Bi-turbo means just that there are 2 turbos, doesn't matter if they are sequential or not. Same as tri-turbo and quad-turbo. Twin-turbo=Bi-turbo...en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twin-turbo
Car is at 112k miles. I’ve had it since 25k miles (2017). Warranty expired at 60k miles. In the last 2 years I had to replace the motor mounts and EGR valve. About 2.5k USD in repairs. But otherwise, still running good for the time being.
Excellent video and spot on with my impressions on the e39 (owned 5) and e60 (skipped). Just got a great F10 535i after passing on a couple 550i's due to the valve stem seal issue. So glad i did. This car is amazing!
I replaced the OEM continental contiprocontact run flat tires that came with my 528 F10 with BridgestonePOTENZA RE960AS POLE POSITION RFT and not only did the harsh ride quality of the continentals go away, but also the car's straight line traction and handling improved greatly. Try these bridgestone tire if you want to improve your ride quality while not sacrificing the convenience of having run flats on your car. I will not recommend the Bridgestone driveguard run flat tires however. I found that, while it provided improved ride comfort, it had little to no road feedback for the car.
Started to look into these cars. I'm looking for a nice and comfortable used "German" cruiser. This one seems to fit the bill quite well, but there's a few engine options to choose from. Not sure which one I should really be looking at
On the 535i with the N55 engine, check the oil filter housing gasket for leaks. It’s right above the serpentine belt and with cause it to disintegrate. When the belt breaks there’s a high likelihood of in being ingested by the engine which turns into a $22,000 USD repair estimate from the dealer...
I have same car.2015 525d with 2.0 engine. It has average 6.4L/100 km at 600 km trip I did. It has 189.000 kms in clock. Car is brilliant. But this engine I have is known to have failure with timing chain.
Not a detailed assessment. The weak spot of the F10 reliability are suspension components and its ability to warp brake discs pretty easily. Also there was an engine upgrade to the 530d which improved performance to 258 bhp and emissions/economy from the 2012 model year.
E60 design is what???!! man E60 is one of the sexiest 5 series ever made , and own E60 and F10 designs .. interior on the f10 is unmatched... both great cars
1 thing I find missing is the details about the N20 engines faulty internal plastic timing chain guides, this is a major one (Class action lawsuit major) where the engines were blowing up around 76,000 to 79,000 miles when the plastic guides were giving way.
I have a 2011 550i (M sport) 6 speed manual. In silver, like in your video @ 6:18. With custom exhaust and a few other goodies, including Dinan stage 2. The engine was making a ticking sound and the BMW dealer said I needed a new engine, there was metal shavings in the oil pan. With these expensive cars (BMWs) get the warranty. I have a brand new engine, 4.4L shipped from Germany and installed by BMW dealer in NY. The warranty covered almost $18k for engine/parts and labor. I have just over 40,000 miles on the chassis/body, the car looks brand new. No other problems or complains. Over a thousand miles on the new engine now and she purrs like a lion. ...It's true (as per video), early models had fuel injector problems. No other problems or complains so far. The platinum warranty is a MUST! in my opinion and a peace of mind.
Yeah, the 50i engine (N63 engine) (especially before the LCI update) is a unreliable piece of crap, most early F10's already have a replacement engine and they still crap out on occasion. In the US they had a recall (but they didn't call it that, they called it the "customer care package" to avoid bad press), but in the rest of the world, you're basically screwed if anything goes wrong on the engine. If you're in the market for a 550i, definitely avoid all pre-2014 F10's and make sure it has an N63TU engine (which is the updated one). Otherwise, go for a 35i or an M5 (which second hand might cost only 20% more than the 50i).
I had a 2016 518d estate automatic on lease from a BMW dealer in Arras, France. I did not buy it when the lease ended as BMW simply wanted too much money for it. I specified comfort seats and they were not very comfortable. They lacked padding and the leather was hard. The standard seats are better The ride quality without Adaptive Suspension was harsh at slow speeds. I had 225/55 17 tyres, but lower profile tyres would make small bumps and road noise even more noticeable. I had problems with the coolant level dropping. This was an internal leak caused by the EGR valve and was subject to a worldwide recall. BMW France failed to notify me of this problem and recall, and I had to have the EGR valve replaced at Chandlers BMW at Hailsham, UK. It was also required that the EGR cooler be replaced as well as part of the recall. Once again BMW France failed to notify me of this recall. Problems with the EGR cooler could cause the car to catch fire. Good luck to the next owner! In the 90,000 kms I drove my car over three years I found it to be very fuel efficient, averaging between 40 to 48 miles per gallon on long distance driving. The 518d was very kind to tyres which lasted well and wore evenly. The 8 speed gearbox changed smoothly most of the time, but would get caught out at low speeds as it hesitated to select the right gear. On autoroutes and motorways the 5 series was tiring to drive as you constantly had to correct the steering to keep the car straight. The steering was dead and lifeless especially on long stretches of motorway, you couldn't relax for a moment in case the car drifted out of the lane. The main problem owning a BMW is the cost of servicing and repairs. €760 for the 2nd service is way too much. I knew if I kept my BMW I would have to put new front discs and pads on it, and maybe the rears too. The air suspension on the estate versions like mine will eventually require the air bags to be changed and that is around €900 each side at a French BMW dealer. Also I started to lose coolant again which was probably due to the new EGR valve now leaking. Be aware that the bonnet, front wings and doors are all made of aluminium on the F10/11 and are more vulnerable to denting plus harder to repair than steel I now own a Renault Talisman Initiale Paris edc 160 estate. It is loaded with features which would cost extra on a 5 series and it is more comfortable with abetter ride quality. In my opinion the Talisman is a superior car for the money.
thank you for this video! i'm looking into buying a 520D Touring with the Msport package from September/2011 so the timing chain should not be a problem , love the look of these 5 series models , my dad also drives an F10 530D , had it for 6 -7 years now without any issue , so pretty relaible cars
me: *Buys used BMW 530d* *stumbles upon this video just 2 weeks after buying* "please don't say the car has too many issues, please" *watches video* Phew! Made the right choice to buy. Although, according to official instructions from BMW oil change happens every 30000 kms, and that's how the previous owner did them. Hope it didn't harm the engine too much, I'll definitely be doing them every 15000 kms. Plus the 530d is kind of the only estate car witch comes with a huge engine and a manual transmission.
if your car is made between July 2012 and June 2015 then make sure your EGR cooler is replaced / checked since the old part can cause in some cases fire
Diving a 2015 530d since 8 years. No touchscreen, favorite-buttons, good voice command where needed (phone, music, navigation), has already most gimmicks (ACC, matrix-LED, softclose, 4wheel steering, ventilated seats and so on). No idea why to change, since exterior & interior design has become more and more unelegant during the last years.
Attention to those who have or plan to have F11 touring or F07 GT! When the rear quickly drops after shutting the car off your air suspension bags need replacement! Do this ASAP because otherwise you will put too much pressure on your air suspension compressor and it will wear prematurely! Air bag replacement = cheap, air compressor replacement = expensive. I think it cost me just 150 euros per piece + replacement.

As some of these approach or are over 10 years old the headlights are a massive problem. They let water in and fail at 1000+ GBP each. The repair is often not worth it.
I bought a 2011 550i after much searching. Ive had it 6 years now, and still just LOVE the car. Doesnt drink excessive fluids, is decent on gas, killer infotainment, and ultimate cmfort in a 4 door cruiser. 2 doors is plenty now, so when I sell, probably grabbing a new m6 or Alfa Quad Giulia. Love the lines on both, and both cars are brutally fast. I have a Stelvio and its a blast to drive, but the bmw despite its advanced age is worlds better. 0-60 in 4.7 is plenty quick, and the top end comes soon!
The 3.0 diesels also suffer the chain issue. The headlight modules also fuck up fairly often. Manual gearboxes sometimes won't go in to reverse. Dualmass flywheels wear out fast too.
One of the best BMW reviews out there ! Thank you ! I was deciding between 2014 Mercedes Benz CLA 250 or 2014 BMW 535d about same price $17K with both at 80K miles…any suggestions?!
Watch out for the oil filter housing gasket around 40k, and water pump every 60k (overheating indicators when temp is normal is your hint). If your A/C stops blowing cold, replace the blower motor and blower regulator. Also, leaks in rear window seals and headlights are a constant frustration. Don't be afraid to ditch the run-flat tires-you won't regret it! The ride is much smoother without them, cheaper too! Some mechanical inclination will go a long way in saving you money with this car. UA-cam videos are a HUGE help. Despite all this, I love my 2011 f10 535i M-Sport (MT6)!

(i mean ive done most of the work myself and oil was the major saver $40 to 50 bucks for the oil and filter DYI vs +$150 at the dealer (think average was $180
You missed one very important part. Cars with 250 000...300 000km will have a high pressure fuel pump failure (the rate is very high). This causes injectors to fail. The fuel pump will start dispersing small aluminum pieces around the fuel system. This means that you have to replace the whole system - fuel tank, high pressure fuel pump, all the pipes and injectors. Very costly. Better replace HPFP between 200k...250k km. This is a serious issue of new Audis, BMW, VW, Volvo and so on. It's because they all use similar Bosch pile of crap which will eventually fail. Google and see for yourself ;)
I have 2011sept 520 diesel and i had to change the engine at 170Tkm because of many injectors were defect. There was no warning from board computer. I let check by BMW garage whether timing chain should be replaced, it costs 140€ and they gave me the car back and have not indicated the vibrations which was not normal. They are not so qualified. The truth is that Injectors should be tested every 100Tkm.
I had a 2012 530d M Sport from new and experienced the following issues:- EGR valve recall Drivetrain malfunction Worn ball joints after 40k miles Worn suspension arms after 50k miles Sold at 60k BMW’s are not built like they used to be
@@anbuhacker The warrnty only covered the EGR recall all the others were down to inherent BMW quality issues and I look after all of my cars I dread to think how other owners will have experienced who use and abuse their cars !
The crankshaft pully broke of on my F11 at 263 000 KM (2011 model, N57 525d), is this a known issue? The key keeps on opening my doors even if I don't touch the doorhandle... When I'm on a cold start, sometimes the engine will randomly shake once in a while (let's say you would feel 5 engine-shakes in 1 minute), as soon as I gas up, there is no issue...

any opinion on the 535i GT models? Would they be closer to the 5 in terms of reliability or the 7 series (F01) as it shares the same platform? thx
With how many common and *expensive* faults the 5 series has, it's probably not a bad idea to look at one with more miles/km on it with a rich service history with most common faults already fixed rather than getting a low miler and then paying thousands to fix the upcoming problems.

Has the upkeep been expensive
Bunch of double talk here. There is only ONE WAY to buy a BMW: You find one that just got off the 3 year or 4 year lease, buy it for half what it cost new, and make sure it has the factory extended warranty for 6 years or 100,000 miles. When the warranty starts to expire you get rid of it and get another.......FUN DRIVING, LOW COST, and while plenty of repair bills, BMW pays for them not you! Buying a German car without warranty is a bad idea....the lesson will be very costly..........end of story......
Quick q - do you buy the warranty from any dealerhsip? or simply just call BMW?
OR, you can learn to turn a wrench and save yourself up to 70% in the cost of ownership, which is what I do...
what model year?
Thank you..

My 2011 F11 520d has really only had a technical problem with both rear suspension bellows. Both were changed under warranty, however. My only real disappointment is with paint blistering on the original 17 inch rims (236 style).
While the E60 is an amazing sexy lady, the F10 is a wonderful gentleman (i agree unmatched interior from a W212 owner)
The warranty covered everything?
Yeah, the 50i engine (N63 engine) (especially before the LCI update) is a unreliable piece of crap, most early F10's already have a replacement engine and they still crap out on occasion. In the US they had a recall (but they didn't call it that, they called it the "customer care package" to avoid bad press), but in the rest of the world, you're basically screwed if anything goes wrong on the engine.
If you're in the market for a 550i, definitely avoid all pre-2014 F10's and make sure it has an N63TU engine (which is the updated one). Otherwise, go for a 35i or an M5 (which second hand might cost only 20% more than the 50i).
x50i is the worst engine by far. In europe every car got new engine before 60k miles. Nice to hear you get all in warranty.
OverSoft -How can you check what engine the vehicle you're trying to but has at the dealer?
NutNbutSpeed If it's around 400hp, then it's the old one. If it has around 450hp, then it's the new one.
Be aware that the bonnet, front wings and doors are all made of aluminium on the F10/11 and are more vulnerable to denting plus harder to repair than steel
I now own a Renault Talisman Initiale Paris edc 160 estate. It is loaded with features which would cost extra on a 5 series and it is more comfortable with abetter ride quality. In my opinion the Talisman is a superior car for the money.
Victor Grasscourt Renault talisman is a piece of shit car imo.

Ardi Blumkvist i hate bosch parts. they always break fast and too much obsolescence
i just replaced mine XC60
Thank you for the info. 👍
Thanks for the timing chain update. This killed my last 520d 2010 model. Might consider a 2016 model again.
Just keep the 2010 and save up for a G30
530D has 245 or 258 hp depending on the year. not 225.
greetz
525d until 2011 was 3.0l d, maybe he meant that
A common issue is the m sport after 2014 cause the interior motion sensors are horrible which leads to the steering wheels being stolen.
Just bought a 520d 2016, should probably have watched this first to check everything was fine. Great car so far though.
Why what kind of problem you have with your 520d?
@@qepaxhiu nothing yet. Really happy with it
@@qepaxhiu already drove over 3000km in europe on vacation and had 0 problems. Fuel consumption is amazing aswell.
I've been wanting to buy a 2012 550i but not sure if I'm gonna make a smart choice? Is that car have lots of problems?
Bought my frist bmw here in china ( im from brazil ) it is an 520i 2015 with 22.000 km and Im happy with it
I own a 2010 BMW 520D SE since a year and it had the exact same timing chain issue as you mentioned. Got the chain replaced a week ago 😂
Manual transmission ?
@@andersmller4785 Yes.. Manual transmission
Watching these videos has convinced me to sell mine.
I had a 2012 530d M Sport from new and experienced the following issues:-
EGR valve recall
Drivetrain malfunction
Worn ball joints after 40k miles
Worn suspension arms after 50k miles
Sold at 60k
BMW’s are not built like they used to be
Did the warranty covers them all?
@@anbuhacker The warrnty only covered the EGR recall all the others were down to inherent BMW quality issues and I look after all of my cars I dread to think how other owners will have experienced who use and abuse their cars !
Amazing cars I have a 520d. 535d next.
Really into buying an 520d or i, thanks so much for this video! So much helpfull info so i now know exactly what to look for when if i buy one.
thanks for the video. it's very useful
I personally had terrible experiences with the x35i (n55) and wouldn't recommend anyone opting for it.
what happen? N55 should be way more reliable compared to n54. Still gets common oil leaks for valve cover, and oil housing.
What about m550d? The 3.0 liter tri-turbo 381hp… Is it reliable?
Hi, why do you recommend buying a 5 series petrol car from March 2011 and up? Are there any particular problems with early model petrol cars ?
f11 530diesel 245 hp registrated 2010.Has that model problems with timing chain.Or is it only the 520d model
How about the Xdrive AWD is that going to be expensive to maintain versus RW?
I'm looking at a 525d 3.0 204cv
I dont see this configuration in your engine list
is it reliable ?
the car is early 2011
The crankshaft pully broke of on my F11 at 263 000 KM (2011 model, N57 525d), is this a known issue?
The key keeps on opening my doors even if I don't touch the doorhandle...
When I'm on a cold start, sometimes the engine will randomly shake once in a while (let's say you would feel 5 engine-shakes in 1 minute), as soon as I gas up, there is no issue...
Thank you very much !! Thank you for putting up known issues with the car and their year and engines!! Great review!! I’m looking to get 2013 535i but trying to find the most information I can about the model first
Not enough specific issues related to BMW is mentioned. Any of numbered problems can relate to any of cars in market.
I'm sure at at 3:56-3:58 are standard seats and at 4:01-4:05 are the sports seats?? Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Hello, I have a PDC fault warning on my F10 BMW 520d 2012 right hand drive.
The warning shows on the menu screen and sensors not working at all.
Can you help?
My 2013 535xi has 66k miles. Mint condition, should I change the transmission fluid for mainteance? Planning on keeping it forever. Never been changed before? Anybody? Thanks!!!
Just one point, I'd at least check the fluid level in the transmission.
You forgot one diesel engine wich is : 525d (N57 3.0d) 204PS
Yes indeed. I got the f10 with diesel engine 525d (N57 3.0d)
Love the car!
Yes, he did forget to mention that the 525d was a 6 cylinder the first 2 years of production then it got replaced by a high output 4 cylinder as mentioned.
Really useful, thank you!
On the 528i there s also the 3 l with 254 hp
I just bought a 2010 535i (inline 6 engine), with 70k miles, what problems do u think i should know
By the way, what do you guys recommend ?
Hello have the 4 Zylinder petrol engines not the Timing chain problem like 3 series and x3 since its the same n20 motor? Thank you
They do lol. I really don't know why he didn't mention it for the 520i and 528i
