different car review good review but why dont you talk about M Sport packet? M Sport version looks the best, is more expansive and include many things (bumpers, side skirts, steering wheel, rims, foot rest, side sills, black roof lining etc)
I had e46, e90 , e39 and now have a 2005 e60 525i . i never enjoy before as much as this one . silky smooth drive , reliable engine and tranny ,heavy duty front end and enough internal space and trunk . by the other way i see it very beautiful and a different design in compare to previous . i think its more reliable than newer 5 series powered by twin turbo 2.0 small 4 cylinder with the same performance .
Absolutely the most beautiful BMW ever created. Too bad humans are afraid of change and BMW went back to a more boring styling design. The F10 looks like a bigger version of a 3 series for those people who could afford to pay more. Outside of the Bangle Years, people could tell how much money you could afford by which series (3, 5, 7) you drove. In the Bangle Years, I would by the 5 over the 7 because it is a prettier car and not just a cheaper version of a 7 series. The Bangle designed BMWs Z4, 5, 6, and 7 series sedans and coupes (except for the timid 3 series) were the best looking ever.
I agree. I have a 2007 E60 520d. I bought it back in 2016 and it had 105.000kms. I LOVE that car. Never, ever had a problem with it. It gets maintenance every 15.000kms and it has 190.000 kms now. Although I love the car, I am planning on replacing it with an F10 530d, mainly because of government regulations on diesel engines. My E60 is class EURO 4 and starting from 2020, certain cities will be banning Euro 4 cars, or they will only get limited acces provided that you pay an 'eco tax'..
people didn't like the e60? This is literally one of the best looking BMW bodies of all time imo. It had s2000 levels of forward thinking style. It DID NOT look like a 2004 car at all when new
I am a journeyman auto mechanic and my personal vehicle is a 545i. The v8 is very nice but it does come with its problems: Oil leaks, coolant leaks, oil burning though the valve stem seals, etc. The good news is if you are relatively handy, these repairs can be done at home with a moderate amount of skill level. Also, online resources are available and very helpful. I could never afford to own this car if I had to pay someone to do the repairs for me, so bear that in mind when looking to purchase. The v8 engine in these is smooth as silk and will put a smile on your face when working properly.
I own 545i e60 n62 v8 engine, there is a triangle showing on the dashboard and the half check engine light. The car revs up above 5000rms only when it's powered up, then nest second it drops below 2000rpms and stays below 2000rpm, I don't know what to do.
A friend of mine is on the look out for a 530d estate at this time and all of the information needed for when we go looking for one is contained in this video. You have saved us so much time trawling through the internet for the answers with this 10 minute video and I want to thank you very much for that.
Hey man, I found a 530d and I’m thinking to buy it. Can u tell me If your friend is happy with the car? And if he had any problems? That’s my biggest concern
@@fabioonel696 Sorry to say Fabio he ended up buying a 320d Estate instead which isn't going to help you I'm afraid. Anyone I've known except one who's had any BMW has been happy with it. The one who didn't had a 320d with the timing chain issue but got it done and changes the oil far more regularly than BMW suggest and its been ok this last 70k.
@@graemew7001 I have an x6 right now and I’m not planing to sell it, but i really like the way this car looks and I heard that even tho you take care of it, you will have problems with the car. But thanks for the response mate, really appreciate it
@@fabioonel696 You're very welcome. My view on hearing or reading views on the internet and forums is that you only ever get one side of the story, the negative side, no-one ever goes on to say positive things. Therefore I take it with a pinch of salt because there's thousands of these cars out there and they can't all go wrong. I use these reviews as what areas to keep an eye on rather than making a decision for me. I've had plenty of cars and had issues but few were mentioned in forums etc.
I personally own one myself the 520i from 2004 with the m54 engine since brand new. Very reliable car and no major problems whatsoever other then regular maintenance. Very sporty and yet comfortable to drive.
thats a shit engine that consumes oil, and i am saying shit because 170hp for such a big car is a huge waste. That car needs at least 525i engine to feel it "sporty" as you said.
Your absolutely right on about those e60 61 I have a e61 and most of what you say is correct I do my own repairs and the maintenance is key. This car is pleasure to drive and really not that costly. Swore I’d never buy another BMW but bought a z4 coupe e86 what a treat.
my father has a 520d bought new in 2006 and since then it had not a single problem. The handling is very good for a simple sedan and the fuel consumption is very good. And now I have a 2012 525d and also I don t have any problems with it. The only thing that I have to change is the timing chain because it wasn t replaced. I think that the reliability problems of the bmw's come mostly from the way that the cars are maintained by the owners.
owned multiple bmws from E36 323i, e46 325i, E39 530i to name a few, also got the misses a 1 series. so decided to pick up a 2004 e60 530d m sport package pre face lift, with only 79000 on clock, that was 16 month ago, since then it's not skipped a beat, I've just clocked 120000, it's been the most reliable beamer I've owned. I understand that some bmws will and do have many problems, cause it's happened to me many times, but bmws aren't that bad to work on, they do seem daunting at first but the way they are engineered makes it quite easy to get in there yourself. big mistake people make is running straight to a bmw dealer to get things fixed, that's why it cost so much. bmws have a wealth of online forums, how to videos and you can find any part or specialised tool at reasonable prices if you are willing to look and do it Yourself. I'm sure my e60 is gonna be with me for a long time to come, it's has been one of, if not the best all rounder bmw I've owned, and has the looks that are contemporary today.
leevinylcritic Good comment. I have gone from novice to full expert on repairing my first BMW (2004 e46 M54 320i) Not that it happened often but from it being so easy to work on. It is even cheaper to have and maintain than most people would think. Now I am on a 2008 e60 523i N53, for 2 years straight it just runs. Looking at buying an F01 750i in the near future.
Cool bro that you already owned a lot of bmw, what do you think about the 550i e60 2008? I want to start to beeing á bmw guy, but i didn't see the 550i beeing the most reliable or unreliable bmw. So what do you think about this, and if you have some bmw to recomend for me, i really want a powerfull stock bmw that Will not cost much to mantain, can be a 5 or 3 series arround 10k$
I've watched an E39 540i ower that said that driving the car was like a magic carpet. An another review about the E60 530d that said that the suspension was a little harder than the fuel version. Is that true? Is it noticeable the difference in the driving experience between the models? I like the specs of the 530d motor but I don't want to give up the pleasure of driving it
update..my e60 530d I've had it mapped removed the egr and dpf. deleted back box, bigger injectors and High flow fuel pump.. removed the exhaust manifold for a High flow cast one..all those mods are for the m57 engine but these mods will work on most BMW diesels, do your research First for your spec of engine..i have ended up with power gains well over 300 bhp from around 230. but you must use a reputable mapping garage that specialises in diesel engines like darkside development UK.
@@leevinylcritic thanks for the update, I've looked for many people that have done modifications to his diesel, I'm not sure how that affects the lifespan of the motor, but what I was trying to get about the driving experience was particularly about the confort on the drive in terms of suspension. Is it comparable an E39 540i with a E60 530d?
I have a 2006 BMW E60 530i, it has been very reliable and I have a 171000 miles on this car. It's my daily driver. However I plan on doing maintenance on things that are bound to go eventually. Water pump, hoses, belt. Of course, can't leave out the seal for the valve cover! Oil is starting to seep out of the engine. Which I know is typical for these model cars.
My 525i 06 is going on 185k miles holding up strong just have to keep up with them and now a days there’s plenty guys who work on them for not so much very reliable car I always been scared of them but this one made me feel so secure iv gotten a few at this point highly recommended
e60 530i with M-Package built 2008, bought one last year. The guy who owned the car before me had to change a lot of parts, the most expensive would be changing all injectors. But oh man I'm in love with this car. Every time I get in, it just feels so good. Like every day and I have it for half a year now. They say money can't buy happiness but it can buy you a 530i and you can be sure, this car makes a man happy for a very good price.
I own a BMW 520d since new, bought in 2009 so 11 and half years ago. Never had one single issue with it AND I've never even changed the battery! Quite amazing, I should say...
@@alib7869 I have done nothing special apart from regular servicing, and I've always kept it in a closed parking area when not driving it... ;) Good luck with your purchase!
I buy two days ago a e60 from the first year of production 2003 530d, the electronic problems only with the Bluetooth module that random doesn't work. I replace the spark plugs and the spark plugs module, the exaust manifold had a leak and, swirl flaps delete. New struts and tires and the normal maintenance. 290k kms on the clock and drives better than a new car.
Excellent review on the BMW E60 5-series!! I own a 525i from 2006 and have been through some horrors mentioned in the video like the CCC failing and multiple leaks, broken water pump on a hot day etc but with some extra cash and a handy mechanic my E60 is still going strong with 250,000+ km on the dash! Once again great review will check out more reviews on your channel 😎👍
Really great review. I own 2009 BMW E60 with 80k miles on it. Generally speaking, N52 is a great engine if well maintained. If you change oil every 6 months, you will minimize the oil leak and potential sensor problems due to oil leak. Water pump is definitely issue, generally fails around 80k miles but there are some cars with 150k miles still have the original pump and thermostat (combined costs around 350 dollars if DIY), so nobody really knows why. I would recommend changing coolant every 2 years of course using OEM BMW coolant. Transmission is very strong ZF 6, if you do not drive like crazy, it usually does not fail. Lastly, injectors, yea they may start leaking which will results in long crank at first start. You can definitely live it. Otherwise, car is not that expensive to maintain. Key thing is doing it yourself.
I just found a extremely cheap 09 5 series and I'm nervous to pay it. I'm glad I saw this comment because I don't mind getting under the hood myself at all. Long as I can figure out what the problem is and how to fix it I'm game. I mean it's on sale for $3999 🤷🏽
@@Chris-oe5ty be very careful. Avoid high mileage cars. Maintenance records are key. Problems with these e60 due to early failure if the engine parts like water pump, valve cover gasket , ignition coils.
I own a 2006 530Xi. Use it as my daily driver. In all these years I've only had to change a bulb for the Angel Eyes lights outside the regular service.
I’m an Certified Automotive Technician who owns a 09 535i and it is a pain when things go wrong they go at the same time but after their fixed it’s a Solid Reliable & Fun Car!
2007 530i M Touring owner, 125,000km. Air suspension just failed, just a hose, fortunately. Both front seat thigh extensions no longer work electrically, but can be pulled in and out manually. Otherwise, it's rock solid and I love every minute behind the wheel. Thinking of buying one? Do it!
I have a 2006 525 6 speed manual. 386,000 kilometres. The only thing wrong with it is the rear subframe bushings are worn, which means dropping the whole rear assembly and replacing everything. A huge job, but it still works fine, and I could drive it for quite a while longer before I really need to do it. M Sport springs, Bilstein sport shocks, M sport front stabilizer bar, M5 rear stabilizer bar, and M5 chassis support braces, staggered M-parallel rims with Michelin 4S rubber. Quiet as a Lexus, corners like a Porsche for a very low price. I call it the best car in Canada in the under $8,000 category.
I bought my 525i 15 month ago . at the same time here was a e39 530i with the same m54 engine but with 35hp more power as you know .it was 30% cheaper than my e60 but i prefer this because of more beauty in my opinion . i replaced its water pump ,rubber hoses ,valve cover gasket and coolant radiator at the first day and i haven't any problem at all. its my daily drive car and really enjoy it specially in journeys .
Ive a 2004 e60 530d and its going well. I recently changed the transmission fluid myself and it was easy enough saving a few hundred euro ! Because of the build quality and the good weather here in Spain i think my car still looks like new !!
I have 2006 520d m47 with 411k km without anny issue. Owned this car last 7years. Perfect car. Also have bmw e39 530d 1999 with 756k km owned 11 years and still drive peffect. BMW is the best!
I own a 2008 LCI 535xi and mine has been bullet roof and very few repairs ( Water pump & coolant reservoir). My titanium colored version still looks new. Always garaged and 85k miles. If taken care of these last many years.
I bought my 530i in 2006. It’s currently on 180,000 miles and hasn’t really caused me any trouble at all. It drives like new and I love it. It’s been main dealer serviced in all this time. Excellent buy for me.
I'm hearing the same issues that other regular cars have... I appreciate the honesty but the picture is painted that is one of the worst cars to have which is not true... Also the design is spectacular. It's amazing that it still looks sexy to this day. I like the info presented tho... Guys the solution is this - just take care of the vehicle
I remember how much of a bashing these cars got for the styling back when they were new. But I must say, time has been very kind to them! Not only do they look a decade newer than they really are, but in general they are proving to be well made, and certainly much less rust-prone than older BMWs. As a die-hard fan of the E38-46 era BMWs I never thought I would want one of these but lately I am starting to reconsider. The 530d in particular is a really, really good car!
E60 is a stunning timeless design. When you see a mint one on the road today it turns more heads than any 2021 model car. * I dont own one but am in the market
I had a 2006 525i in Titanium Silver Metallic it was very reliable up till 150.000 miles then I had to replace the electric water pump, thermostat, injectors, and various oil gaskets, also had all four corners of suspension fail at 160,000 miles which were replaced. The i6 motor left me wanting more power even in the steptronic mode with traction control off but it was an excellent highway car it had very good noise cancellation in cabin. I am a USA Electrician used the car as my daily driver and packed the trunk full of tools and it handled the heavy cargo excellently. Very fluffy and comfortable seats but I did have the leg support go out also the well known poor quality front slide out cup holders which broke a few times. I lost my key fob once and I had to also pay for a new key modular and programming as well as two new key fobs which totaled almost $1600 for this issue (don't lose your key!) various electrical issues and I drive problems also occurred which ended up costing more than mechanical failures. So be mindful. All around I loved my e60 and I will still recommend buying one if you find one well maintained. 👍🏻
Brandan Masterson I owned a 2005 525i and you are right, the engine was a dog. The 530s engine is a lot faster and just as reliable. I wouldn’t go near the 535 turbo engine though. I herd that engine is a nightmare
I had a 2006 pre-LCI E60 530d MSport for two years a few years ago. 50k miles when I bought it. It was fast, handled brilliantly and generally was good to drive. But it broke down... a lot. Failed thermostats (3 in 2 years!), including a nearly new one that burst open. Burnt out starter motor. 2 dead batteries in 2 years. Glow plugs all needed replacing. Navigation failed. Steering lock failed. Particulate filter kept blocking up as it generally refused to re-generate for some random reason.... I sold it in the end and re-commissioned my old 1998 E39 540i that had been off the road for a while. Five years later, I'm still driving it. Its a MUCH better 5 series!
Ive got an 07 525i, had it for 2.5 years got it at 130k miles. Now its a little under 200k. Runs like a champ, i do oil changes regularly, but as of now inhave to replace radiator hoses, transmission filter/fluid, alignment, tire rod kit replacement. Regular maintenance, As long as you have records for maintenance you should be fine when buying! No excuses i have everything recorded on my emails to receipts! Be patient dont rush or you will fail!
My story and my opinion: I have a 2010 528i that I bought a year ago which just reached 100K miles. I've owned a 2003 535i most recently that ran until 250K before it started having major issues. Someone who owned it previously mystve been a kid that put an M steering wheel on it though it wasn't an M. She was cranky and had obviously been beat on. She was given to me after my accident with my previous car, my prized 2007 528i which I hit a deer with, and didn't have full coverage insurance on it (so didn't have enough to fix it). The 07 had vanos problems, worn rubber trim, leaks, cold starting issues, but I understood it's issues and worked with it until Mr. Deer decided he owned the road. I had a 93 328i prior to that which drove like a dream for a few years until one day it caught fire under the hood with an electrical failure. Couldn't afford to have it fixed. I am a BMW woman. When I got in each one (other than the 03 which was hurting) I always thought each was better than the last. My current 2010, is luxury driving. Soft drive, way softer than earlier versions. On cold days I'm always freezing. I crank heat and turn on heated seats and steering wheel. Within 5 minutes I'm warming up. Within 15 minutes the wheel is hot, I'm toasty warm and praising Jesus. *Recent problems here in Sub zero New York:* in freezing cold 0° weather with wind chill warnings at 20° below, it tried hard, and succeeded at starting. My father's 2014 Honda Civic and sisters 2010 Honda Accord both failed to start. (So please don't tell us to buy Japanese). Yay BMW. However, during that cold snap last week, a high beam went out. Then, the heat refused to blow out any more than minimal force of air, no matter where it was set on the dial. Turning it all the way up did nothing, until the car was warmed up. Not sure why, because now it works ok. I fear it had a stroke due to the cold. But I digress. Strangely, I got in it today and the other high beam went out, and it was odd, because it was as soon as I turned the beams on. The blue high beam light on the dash flickered, then went out. So I shut the beams off, then turned back on. No high beams came on, but blue light did come back on, as did the "Warning" on idrive. So now I have no high beams at all. Being a woman, I'll have no choice but to take it somewhere to get it fixed, and right now I don't have the money to fix it. I believe for true die hard BMW owners, many of us are largely German descent. We take great pride in products put out by the countries our ancestors came from. We don't want someone messing something up, accidently slipping with a wrench and pretending it never happened, giving us the wrong oil, or trying to rip us off pretending they know something about German cars when they don't. We only want the best to work on them, yet not rip us off. With that, the worst thing about owning a BMW isn't what goes wrong with them. It's finding someone you'll ALLOW to touch it let alone look at it, at a price that won't bankrupt us. We also rarely believe people have any idea of what they're talking about with BMW, unless they've owned at least 2 of them or work on them constantly, daily, as a career. We trust no one. At least that's what I've seen in other bmw owners as well as myself. So, call us snobs, but we are just as confused when something goes wrong with out little bar of gold, and yet if you look at it wrong, we will slap you one. That is true love.
Bought an 04 530i 2 years ago. Ibs cable causing no start. Control arms. Transmission fluid service. Radiator expansion tank and hoses. Valve cover and gasket. Ccv system m54. Wiper filler tube disintegrates. Look out for rubber crimped hoses on the brake lines going to active steering pump. Dynamic drive issues. I drive issues. Wiring harness going to trunk may rot. Headlight wiring may rot.
I just bought a 2006 550i manual with 106k, knowing it has that coolant leak , I watched your video prior buying the vehicle. Always liked the body style of this 5 series did care about the cost. I figure once I get all the kinks out from the car I am going to enjoy it, I don't buy cars for investments I get them for my personal interests. I should have the car back in a week and will make a video on what was done to get her 💯✔ again, ty for the video most informative.
Here on the Balkans the 530D is considered as one of the most reliable cars you can buy. Just like the 320D of the previous generation. The problem simply is that people don’t service these cars regularly, engine oil, transmission oil and differential oil. And cars like these only deserve the highest quality oils like Castrol and not some cheap oil that you bought for 4€ at your local gas station. Had a great experience with my e46 320d the only thing that broke in the 70.000km I drove it was an electronic part on the injector pump which I fixed for 160€. As of now I’ve done 20.000km on my 530D and had no issues whatsoever, let’s hope it stays like this.
Picked up an 07 530i with 142k for $6,500 year n half ago, Black on black and fully loaded, driven it 16,000 miles and not a single issue. Fantastic row car and my first BMW. Solid 30 mpg on the highway. Live in mountains of western North Carolina and I’ve never driven a car that hugs the corner so tight. Hard throws into tight curves but it just will not break traction. The balance of the vehicle is truly amazing. Went ahead and cut off the muffler so I can hear the engine purr. So far amazing value and joy to drive for the money I spent on it.
E60 is the best looking 5 series ever .. and if it has few issues at least the joy of driving it and comfort compensate for repairs. Most Japanese cars are uncomfortable and no joy in driving them so whats the point ! Just to not go to mechanic as often! Also bmws are luxurious cars so repair costs shouldn't matter for bmw owners. Had e60 08 528i & nothing went wrong other than usual maintenance.
Hi everybody, I do own 2009 e60 528i, would like to share my opinion. n52 engine and 6HP ZF transmission are very reliable if you change oil regularly. You need to be careful about 2 things serpentine belt, change it around 60k and water pump. It goes so smooth, is loaded with many cool features depending on packages. I maintain my car regularly. Did not have any major problem with the car. If you are able to DIY, I highly recommend the car. If you are not willing to DIY or maintain the car, DO NOT BUY this car, you may have lots of issues.
I’ve owned an E60 2.5i se for 5years it’s a 2006 has done just under 90 thousand miles on the clock and never had any problems with it when I bought it it was a one owner car with a full BMW service history since I’ve had it I change the oil and filters every 4 months
Quite a sharp analysis. I run a 2004 (No DPF) E61 530d Touring in the last 9 years, put 100K on it, and not many faults. All of them but one, you mention: Air suspension, Swirl intake plaques, and Bluetooth module/CCC. The important one you missed is the change of the oil recovery filter. The original design (sponge) changed around 3 years later (gravity) and is the one to install. Must do it yourself if not taken to the BMW dealer for revisions. (And sometimes, even if so) For the rest,... liquids and filters and works like a Clydesdale horse. Thanks for the report!
@@gsazbon Wouldn’t believe so. I Don’t think it’s that way, even counting on the heavier diesel engine. Only ///M Series have stiffer suspension to hold the stable. It’s a comfortable car in decent roads. But bear in mind is a Beemer. For broken roads, Mercedes E-Class is the way I would choose. Cheers from Spain.
Liked this video a lot, you covered a lot of possible major and minor faults that occur in a good concise style. Currently deciding between one of these and a Mercedes C-Class.
This was a quality car but all the things mentioned in the video with the pre facelift model are true. That said it was still high comfort and quality. Did 295 thousand km with 525d 6 speed automatic. The gear started to make problem in last half a year of owning it but because my mechanic never changed the oil... All in all after 295k km it was reliable and comfortable. (suspension changed on 200k and the whole new idrive put from a facelifted model.)
Sould've changed your gearbox oil and filter because that ZF one is really good one and very solid also you can do it on your own no need to reprogram anything after easy..
1buddy u so wrong, E60 is just the best looking car out there.... is the ROYAL PUTA in BMW,s will remain ICONIC .. F10 is nice but an old school E60 m pack or M5 can't ever become outdated especially the LCIs !!!
i drove this car to the moon and back! the 3l diesel engine is a power house with more the average good mpg , it's now having a bit more than 406 k!! and the only major investment coming up i think will be the turbo! if u pwerform the services when car car will thell u to make like filters oil and so on no major problems will occur And the 3l engine is as sweet as a nut performs lie the day i bought it!
N52 and N63 working on very high temperatures. Thus burns the seals and leaks occure. To solve that issue you have to code a cooler thermostat opening temperature. There are a lot of people already done it. This solves the problem with burned stem seals and gaskets. Look for low mileage car and do that cold mode and you can bypass over 70% of the problems with the engines. Quality oil is a must and quality oil and air filters. And pedal to the metal my friends.
THE BEST ENGINE is the 530D 218. Cast iron, bullet proof. Check the exhaust manifold for the 530d 218BHP. They are made from aluminium and they crack very quickly even if you have replaced them. The easy solution is to fit a steel one from E39, and there is a huge aftermarket niche for this. Expect somewhere in the region of 100-150 Euros. Basically the 530D 218 is the last version of the e39. They fixed all of the issues, and it can go 1.000.000km without a problem. The CCC is 300 Euros to repair (not 200) and in Germany can reach 400 Euros. The issue is with the heat in summer. So when you refit the CCC after replacement, make some breathing holes and remove as much material as you can so the CCC can breathe. This is not only for the E60. F10 has the same issue. Another issue is the oil coolant gasket fails, and it starts to make a mess.
@@drackula1985 exhaust cracked, swirl flaps already removed from previous owner, and big problem with active direction and 2 small oil leak one frome the gearbox automatic and one from the front just under the cooling system
@@ratibhachemi1572 Under the cooling system? OK check first the oil cooler (driver side) whether it leaks from there. Usually that is where it leaks. Cheap fix. Active Direction problem? Dunno about that, never had one. Oil leak from the transmission. Never had one, but I did change everything (filter, transmission fluid...)
i have the 05, had some check engine lights related to the transmission that would come and go randomly then had a leak on the transmission oil pan, replaced it with all sleeves and it hasnt come back, i also did that transmission reset
I have a 2008 520d with the N47 engine. The timing chain was changed by a BMW factory recall in October 2015 at 185.000 km it now has 272000 km and I've had no issues with it. Since the timing chain change in 2015 I've remarked a stronger engine noise than before, but so far nothing to note on the reliability part. It's true that it is an expensive car to maintain because in the last 2 years I've spent over 7000 EUR on maintenance but this includes new 17" rims with new tyres, new clutch kit, new shock absorbers front and back, new brake discs front and back, new handbrake, 2 new air intake tubes, and all the oil changes with all the filters done at 15.000 km (don't wait 30.000 km as BMW says - it's way too much). All in all I'm happy with the car, it drives great and I have an average consumption of 6.7 l/100 km.
In my opinion BMW 530D is the best of all other varients because its fuel consumption is good and is the most reliable car of this budget is the best car to buy, I myself am planning to buy a 2004 BMW 530D in black colour. Its costs here in Pakistan $16000 and new suzuki cultus cost for more than 17k and has nothing in it . Better is to buy a good and sexy looking sedan like BMW 530D which has alots of features as compared to any other sedan available here in Pakistan.
Got a 520d 2006 with 192k miles on it. Still cruising few parts changed but original turbo, DPF, injectors, auto box that hasn't had its oil changed, exhaust and uses no oil
definitely replace the 6 speed transmission fluid at 100k miles and overhaul the valve body at the same time. Valve body overhaul and fluid change is about $1k USD.
You forgot about the Airconditioner compressor "internal control valve" . They are noisy and and struggle when really hot. I have both a 36000km and a 120000km 2008 530i and both are afflicted with the problem. Either you change compressor and if you are game you can change the control valve but need to degas and regas. The compressor is in a difficult location and because the control valve on the compressor is in a crap location you pretty much got to remove the compressor to change it.
This is my second E60 first was 2005 525D m sport amazing car to drive brilliant reliability and best BMW shape for long time lot better than current design. I loved it so much that I bought another and this one is 2008 M5 with very low miles Probably one of the finest car ever made
Agreed,,Engine and Transmission are great. Bought a 645(basically the same car) 2004 and love it, but since this is my second car, I have time to fix it myself. Problems can beget more problems in a vehicle like this. Really check out that engine bay for oil leaks.
Many good points here but a little fault in the diesel alternatives. The n47s for the E6* series is mainly just as the 150hp LCI models. At least here in Norway we have the much more reliable and easier maintenance vice, m47, that contains both 163 and 177hp in the LCI and non LCI models.
I have a 2010 520d with 70k on the clock and 6k in extras,in the 2 years ive had it its been used as a second car.Its never let me down to date and all ive done is serviced it and changed the runflats to PS 4,s and its transformed the handling.Wouldnt change anything on the car at all,its a great drivers car and very frugal on the fuel.I am aware of the n47 timing chain issues and mine seems very quiet with none of the tell tale failure signs,i view it as a long term keeper and hopefully many more years of reliability.
Nice review. E60 is exceptionally comfortable for for long rides. And it beautiful car. The issues on 2nd-3rd hand used cars is sadly true. If you don't treat it well, it won't treat you well. :)
i owned a 2004 530i for over a year and had to spend $8000 fixing the thing, one thing after another would break. it had 150 000km on the clock so just be prepared for the bills. Was the most beautiful car and fun to drive but damn is it expensive.
@@kmod73 I have owned 3 of these cars, they are very expensive to maintain. I would normally say put $1000-2000 a year aside for fixing them even if you get one in near mint condition.
Spasovski Mihail first of all, Im not the idiot here.. I didnt even tag you, but I tagged the guy that gave the very first comment saying „no it doesnt“... so yeahh.. lol
other problems with the car a. damper pulley failure - rubber wearing off b. tail light ground issue c. central locking, weak remote - diversity antenna issue d. glow plug relay failure e. heater control valve failure
A lot of info in 10 minutes. Nice! You could mention that 145, 170 and 210kw M57 are made out of aluminum (M57D30TÜ2), and all other M57 (older) are cast iron.
Please stop giving the e60 so much hate because the part are more expensive than a traditional car you should have expected it to be expensive if your buying a luxury car.
This is incredibly bias the e60 not only set the standard size for almost all sedans today it also influenced modern day design of pretty much all cars.
Thanks youtuber for the info. Calming me since i'm planning to buy used 2007 from Japan 523i E60 LCi, registered in M'sia@2011 with 193k km mileage. Even after more than 15years, E60 design sooo...evergreen...😍😍...only now i can afford it...🤣😁...that's why i have to learn a lot about it
If you want to forget the girl that dumped you, buy the BMW. Second day, you will start dreaming your new car. Not cuz its great, but cuz u will spend every single moment of your life thinking how will u get the money to repair it
2005 545i, power drain never solved, BMW dealer, 2 german auto shops couldn't solve it. Misfires, lots, replaced all the coils and plugs at 80,000 miles, still throurowing codes. Head gasket leak, oil leaks, rough shifting, erratic idling, alternator bracket gasket leaking, valve cover gasket leaking... where do I stop. Did I love driving the car, YES, would I own another 545 or 550 NO!!! The passenger seat mat issue also was never ending pain in the butt lighting up the SRS and Airbag lights. BMW failed the electronics and V8 test. Excelled at driving, handling and comfort but I was always concerned with how long it would be until the next issue.
I had a few BMW's in Sydney including 05 545i..great design and fantastic driving..however had several problems ...most difficult one even BMW dealer couldn't diagnose...front cooling fan running on high speed after 1 hour of driving...it turn out that bottom section of radiator was blocked as gearbox temp. reached 120°C ...while engine and top.section was 90° C ...it took several mechanics to identify problem..New radiator was installed...since then car goes like beauty..also this model has common gearbox malfunction and need to be rebuilt....
I have a 2004 530i, they are straight up money pits, they are not reliable cars and can easily make you go bankrupt. Would I sell it? Hell no nothing drives like one. Buy your own parts and have your mechanic put them in, and you’ll save hundreds to thousands of dollars. Overall I love this car.
I've owned a e34 as my first car and now I have an e38 7 series , I'm thinking of getting one of these in a couple months or so but I'm reluctant 🤔 I love the feeling and look of the "big box" bimmers.. I'm worried I won't have that same feeling in one of these and also the maintenance. I do alot of my own work and I heard what u can do urself on these is limited.. maybe e39 is a better option then
It depends on what even on a e39 you have some difficult tasks, but pretty much everything you can do it on your own on a e60, but you have the best 7 serie bro you should keep it and buy the e60 if you want
Good review. I drive a 2005 e61 530d and I definitely recognise the main defects you mention. The engine is a real pleasure and the gearbox (if well taken care off) very smooth as well. The suspension level system is of bad quality and you would not expect such an engineering mistake from BMW. The headlights fade after a while as well, I haven’t found a good solution yet for it (polishing etc) On mine the IBS sensor has been changed by the previous owner and also a new steering pump. Had a broken coil spring, these are heavy engines. Other than that I haven’t experienced any major mechanical issues yet after 100k miles on the clock. Will try to maintain it as you are supposed to because I want to drive many more miles in it.

different car review good review but why dont you talk about M Sport packet? M Sport version looks the best, is more expansive and include many things (bumpers, side skirts, steering wheel, rims, foot rest, side sills, black roof lining etc)
in my opinion its one or the most beautiful car BMW ever build
I prefer the f10
Love the headlight
people didn't like the e60? This is literally one of the best looking BMW bodies of all time imo. It had s2000 levels of forward thinking style. It DID NOT look like a 2004 car at all when new
It was looking like a 2020's if you know what I mean ;)
@Boulder Pathways those are audi's fans they do that because of the hate they have for bmw's haha
IMO it didn't age as well as E39. i'm still thinking about getting one though.
@Boulder Pathways it has better styling than the new 5 series imo
@Boulder Pathways how reliable has it been? I put my foot down on getting the e92/93 328i, but I really like how this e60 looks too
Hmm..For me the E60 design is modern and looks good even today. Prefer the facelift exterior & in M-packet it is still a really nice car.
Oliver Toronyi agree. The E60 is also a very reliable car.
the design of the E60 was ahead of its time. Arguably the best looking 5 series ever made
I am a journeyman auto mechanic and my personal vehicle is a 545i.
Nice and indeed. Exept for the valve stem seals. Pita to do the head, right..?
What kind of consumption do you get with 6th gear on the highway doing 80 mph / 130 kmh?
thats a shit engine that consumes oil, and i am saying shit because 170hp for such a big car is a huge waste. That car needs at least 525i engine to feel it "sporty" as you said.
have you replaced the cooling parts?
Which Engine is it ? M47 or N47 ?? And is it Facelift M Sport also ?Please let me know as soon as you can.
Thanks

owned multiple bmws from E36 323i, e46 325i, E39 530i to name a few, also got the misses a 1 series. so decided to pick up a 2004 e60 530d m sport package pre face lift, with only 79000 on clock, that was 16 month ago, since then it's not skipped a beat, I've just clocked 120000, it's been the most reliable beamer I've owned.

I have a 2006 BMW E60 530i, it has been very reliable and I have a 171000 miles on this car. It's my daily driver. However I plan on doing maintenance on things that are bound to go eventually. e60 530i with M-Package built 2008, bought one last year. The guy who owned the car before me had to change a lot of parts, the most expensive would be changing all injectors. Manual or auto? What is the best for this car?

Thanks for these, I love the e60
I just found a extremely cheap 09 5 series and I'm nervous to pay it. I'm glad I saw this comment because I don't mind getting under the hood myself at all.

I have a 2006 525 6 speed manual. 386,000 kilometres. The only thing wrong with it is the rear subframe bushings are worn, which means dropping the whole rear assembly and replacing everything.
Guys the solution is this - just take care of the vehicle
you mentions all problems, nice job, and about design for me its most beautiful bmw ever
* I dont own one but am in the market
yeah sure lol. I live in eastern europe, tons of these and E90's around, nobody gives a fuck. Just regular traffic.
My father had 6 BMW's with the 3.0d engine and had no issues. He sold one and currently has 450 000km on it
this is a milestone in a sport sedans a classic
Absolutely a very interesting, comprehensive review of this very popular BMW 5 series model, thank you for this video
E60 best bmw model ever
My story and my opinion:
I have a 2010 528i that I bought a year ago which just reached 100K miles.
FACT PUUURE FACTS!!!!!
Headlight wiring may rot.
i got a 2010 528i E60 and love it. I have done the transmission fluid and starter as DIY. Not bad at all. Love the car. It has 70k miles.
This video was very helpful. Especially because I'm about to buy an E60. Thanks!
Like the way u do the reviews. Keep it up.
Hi, how has it been?
I live in western North Carolina- just bought an 09 528i with 142k haha
My e60 has over 200k miles and it has been a great car. It still runs like new.
It's far from ugly and far from unreliable. Whatever car you have if you don't look after it it won't look after you 👍🏾
I truly detested Bangle's designs. In 2020 I bizarrely fell in love with the E60. Go figure?🤔
Why do I have to ve dyi? About what?
@@asdasd01 This cars will need some maintenance. If you will bring it to dealer each time, that will cost a lot to you.
All of them but one, you mention:
Air suspension, Swirl intake plaques, and Bluetooth module/CCC.
The important one you missed is the change of the oil recovery filter. The original design (sponge) changed around 3 years later (gravity) and is the one to install. Must do it yourself if not taken to the BMW dealer for revisions. (And sometimes, even if so)
For the rest,... liquids and filters and works like a Clydesdale horse.
Thanks for the report!
I've read that the suspension is more rigid than the fuel version, it's really very hard? I'm looking a really comfortable car
@@gsazbon
Wouldn’t believe so.
I had e60 2007 520d 163hp i bought it with 130 000km and sold it with 210.000km , i have traveled whole Europe with it no problems at all.
Liked this video a lot, you covered a lot of possible major and minor faults that occur in a good concise style. Currently deciding between one of these and a Mercedes C-Class.
And what was your choice?
This was a quality car but all the things mentioned in the video with the pre facelift model are true. That said it was still high comfort and quality. Did 295 thousand km with 525d 6 speed automatic. The gear started to make problem in last half a year of owning it but because my mechanic never changed the oil... All in all after 295k km it was reliable and comfortable. (suspension changed on 200k and the whole new idrive put from a facelifted model.)
Sould've changed your gearbox oil and filter because that ZF one is really good one and very solid also you can do it on your own no need to reprogram anything after easy..
I have a 2007 525xi with over 250 thousand miles she doesn't want to die..
1buddy u so wrong, E60 is just the best looking car out there.... is the ROYAL PUTA in BMW,s will remain ICONIC .. F10 is nice but an old school E60 m pack or M5 can't ever become outdated especially the LCIs !!!
You know it, buddy!
Totally agree!
worth it buy in 2018 E60,535 ?
100% true
Best cocaine sled ever !!!!!
i drove this car to the moon and back! the 3l diesel engine is a power house with more the average good mpg , it's now having a bit more than 406 k!! and the only major investment coming up i think will be the turbo! if u pwerform the services when car car will thell u to make like filters oil and so on no major problems will occur And the 3l engine is as sweet as a nut performs lie the day i bought it!
Turbo is not expensive, suspension (front+back) and the steering rack are (active) is your collector still ok or did you change it?
What's the ccc pls
Thanks, I finally bought the e60 530d 218hp 2004 I couldn't afford the 2008 one..
@@ratibhachemi1572 Check the exhaust, change all of the fluids, remove the swirl flaps on the intake, you will be fine. Congrats.
Problem with transmission of my E60 545i
But very powerful car 👍
i have the 05, had some check engine lights related to the transmission that would come and go randomly then had a leak on the transmission oil pan, replaced it with all sleeves and it hasnt come back, i also did that transmission reset
Same here, still thinking about going with it ?
And now you have a great car that still can run for another 20 years at least!
Have a e61 N52 engine, it's an amazing car really practical too since it's a wegen. Just wish I had a little more power 😭
Big Bro Hassan get the M5
E61 2005 3.0D ~400.000 DPF removed, swirl flaps removed, glow plugs dont work never replaced them, recently Engine Pulley fail and replaced, heat ventilator and regulator failed.
True I confirm, I have the same problem
This is my second E60 first was 2005 525D m sport amazing car to drive brilliant reliability and best BMW shape for long time lot better than current design. I loved it so much that I bought another and this one is 2008 M5 with very low miles

You might have the "facelift chain kit" in it but i would change the timing chain kit after 200 000kms anyway. Just to be sure.

Please stop giving the e60 so much hate because the part are more expensive than a traditional car you should have expected it to be expensive if your buying a luxury car.
This is incredibly bias the e60 not only set the standard size for almost all sedans today it also influenced modern day design of pretty much all cars.

The headlights fade after a while as well, I haven’t found a good solution yet for it (polishing etc)
On mine the IBS sensor has been changed by the previous owner and also a new steering pump.
Had a broken coil spring, these are heavy engines.
Other than that I haven’t experienced any major mechanical issues yet after 100k miles on the clock. Will try to maintain it as you are supposed to because I want to drive many more miles in it.
