  • spray painting woodwork (or TRIM as they call it in the USA) with airless sprayer. My tips will help you get into spraying the woodwork or trim using a airless sprayer and the correct tip sizes... and filters.
    Whether you're New or Old to spraying, I give you a few tips on how I go about spraying.
    This is an ideal video if you are a decorator or anyone thinking of trying domestic spray painting.
    Some tips can use taken away with you to other forms of spraying too.. cherry pick the info you need ;)
    Many of the tips can be used on Airless, HVLP and Conventional spray set ups.

      Glad it's helped. There's a few vids on setting up the gxff and cleaning out.. which is easy done with one decent bucket of water.
      The next vid you need to watch is the spray top sizes if you don't already know.
      The gxff is very versatile... As you see, I've used it on ceilings and walls.. Woodwork.. paneling and furniture.

    Thanks Phill. Got the sprayer out today for ceilings, HVLP is out tomorrow for the woodwork you have given me more confidence to spray

      Don't dismiss using the airless for woodwork... Correct tip size and pressure you be quicker than hvlp.... Less thinning of paint and you can get more paint on the surface when you need to build paint up ... Particularly on new woodwork... Like in this video.
      I still using my QT5 hvlp on woodwork too. It does have more control... But find more dust in the air due to the unit blowing air about ;)

    Hi Phil, I am just getting into spraying and have started a job 12 doors previously painted with gloss I have sanded them washed them down can I use dulux trade wood primer u/c on them first before I use everal aqua 40 ? I would appreciate your help or advice 👍

      Hi. Personally i don't like mixing and matching Undercoat brands with top coat brands.
      Keep with the same when it comes to the UC and top coat.
      Over previously painted gloss I'd go a nice coat of otex akva, then finish two coats of Everal Aqua 40... For build up you can always give it an extra coat of UC, or an extra top coat if you feel the need
      I wouldn't do Dulux UC then a Tikkurilla product.

      As long as you use the correct spray guard for the tip being used.. shouldn't be any problems, swapping between different guns.
      I use a Tritech guard/tip on a Graco Gun.. and vice versa

    Gonna dip my toe in the water and buy a tri-tech 190 just to get me started. Would you have any advice on my choice Phil?

      Three words. Budget budget budget.... What's your budget.
      The 190 will start you off and will be a good little machine...
      Think what you want to be doing with it... And will you start wanting to use it more and more?
      You will!!

    Hi Phil, got me hooked on the spraying idea! Suggestion on a intemediate setup, woodwork initially then moving to ceilings and walls? Graco? Wagner? I even watched the erbauer video? Any help on this front would be great. Wanting to up my game locally and not be frightened of spraying if i purchase the wrong kit. Work smarter.......Thanks for all your videoes help and advice.     watched the vid again. so just ordered my hopper kit from sprayman with 310. 210 ,110 tip. they supply 100 mash is this the right one for the 110 tip. not sure if you said.

    Great informative video Phill, just a quick question I have the gxff you obviously prefer the tri tec tips to the graco ones just wondering if they are better or if it’s a personal preference cheers

      No .. I do have a a couple of Graco green FF tips... And use them ... But I've found I've bought more Tritech tips and keep with those.
      The GXff came with a loft 210 tip, which I've used too.
      You may find you'd not really notice much different when spraying.

      @@rogerbell123 big thing for me is tips wearing and also blocking up.. then having something to fall back on if I'm on a spray job.. you need a spare back up. ;)
      the 208 gold I used as a final coat gives a very nice 'mist' spray... but .06 and .08 do seem to block a bit more with the waterbased paints.. as really they are geared for thin stains and lacquers etc. But thin the paint enough you can get away with it ;)

      Cut in and roll walls, is pretty easy to do. Also future touch ups can be done.

      Hi.
      I use both my HVLP and airless.
      Both have their own advantages.
      Hvlp can spray smaller amounts, more control.
      Airless.. with a hopper kit.. can spray your woodwork/trim paints with ease. Use the smaller FF tips like I talk about.
      I've the QT5 hvlp with a remote pot.
      Also a Graco GXff and a Graco 495st Max II.
      It's down to budget and how often you'd be using it.

    Can I ask, with the emulsions on the walls and ceilings do you spray and back roll or just put the final coat on with brush and roller?

      this room isn't very big, so I've cut in a rolled the ceiling and walls. Other rooms have been sprayed ceilings (tikurilla ar2) and walls cut in and rolled (tikurilla optiva5). My previous video tells you my process on rolling a wall... I also speak about the process used for the job. Hope that helps.

When I was in Australia for a year painting new builds we would spray walls, ceilings and WW with one coat of the same primer(sealer as the aussies called it) and no back rolling then finish everything with the brush and roller. Do you use a similar system yourself? If that's covered in your other vid then disregard this question.
      Have to say these vids are the most comprehensive on UA-cam, really great info fella.

      I'm trying to show people how I do it as a normal painter and decorator... No fancy filming... No fancy scripted words... It's as it is.
      Only basic editing the final cut... How you see it is me doing it.... Like others would be.
      On new build. The wash coated are sprayed.. then ceilings finished by spray.. woodwork too.
      Walls cut in and rolled... Just incase touch up is needed.
      If ceilings need touch up.. it's done with a small short pile roller... Carefully ;)

      @@Cillianofarrell usually we tint all sealers to the top coat colour.. and roll on the last coat because you can't touch up spray...in the uk the houses are alot smaller so you could spray finish if you wanted

    do you have any videos on taping up then spraying the walls after the woodwork? (obviously with brush and roller its walls then woodwork) i do new builds/domestic would be interested at trying a new approach with my new graco ff

      There's taping up videos from early on on the channel.
      But I'd be rolling the rolls not spraying.
      Unless the ceiling and walls were the same colour

    Really informative video. i wonder if you have any suggestions for paint crazing over caulking. Caulking is fully dried and paintable but still get some crazing/cracking of the caulk. A coat of something like Zinnser BIN helps but not always. Any tips to help prevent the cracking?

      Change your caulk.
      I've had it previously.
      It's mainly when it's not a flexible caulk.
      I've moved over to waterbased caulk that can be used interior and exterior.
      I'm using RedDevil caulk and it's brilliant. Dries quick. Not had any crazing with it
      What is try is going over the problem caulk with a fine smear of more flexible stuff, allow to go off and see how it is.
      RedDevil caulk RRP is only about £2 a tube. Try it and let me know how you go on.
      On this vid I'd of used Fathog black tube interior/exterior flexible caulk.. but you can't get it anymore :(
      I think RedDevil is the same stuff in an other tube lol

      @@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Yes, it's way better than anything else i tried but when spraying the WRX satinwood I would still get a little bit in places. What's your go to satinwood when spraying?

      @@danielfitton437 I still like the Tikkurila Helmi 30 or Everal 40, they spray so well.
      Zinsser AllCoat Exterior satin also sprays well.. hvlp and airless.

    Little tip for your Phil, how about a fish tank heater in your hopper to heat your paint.

      @@ProfessionalPainterDecorator ill give a go, my gx 21 arrives tomorrow with the trim kit, been a professional sprayer in furniture, for over 12 years,pressure pot and and gun, so will be interested to see how different the airless is. But back to the fish tank heater, I reckon it will work a treat, maybe put a couple of Johnny's on it, in case it breaks.

    Another tip for you
    Same tritech gun put some masking tape around the top of the filter as well as a spring
    Filter is tight into the gun
    Sprayed 22 doors and a staircase this morning
    Not one single tip block

      Depends. Sometimes same day later on, or next day. Or if longer cus of other work being done I run a blade around any tape edges that may be sealed/stuck with paint. No problems then.

      Hi Phil, can I ask you something please. I used B.I.N primer on all my bare wood and sanded it with 120g painted in using Johnstones arctic satin. Left it over a week before masking it all to spray the walls, using a delicate masking tape. Anyway have to come to de mask and it’s all pulling of where the tape was. It has made a mess. Is there any ideas why it’s failed so badly? Any input on why and how you would go about sorting the mess would be greatly appreciated

    Hi mate, how come you only use a 110 tip. This only gives you a 2" fan? Do you find a wider fan puts on too much paint creating runs?

      a 110 does put a lot of paint on in one 'area'
      i uses 210 and 310, 308 etc as well. its good to have a few different tips to hand

    Im that viewer your clearly addressing this information to. I run a painting business here in N.Ireland, its going very well thank god. Im sitting here deciding if and how will i jump into the spraying end of the business. I have 6 staff along with myself and im ready to invest.     Why do you not mask up on the walls around the frame? If you had to do a light colour on the walls it would take a few coats to over that up. What do you use for windows and to protect them mate?

      These walls are the same colour as the woodwork.
      Yes you can tape around if you wanted, just keep a fraction away from the top of the skirting edge so you have a bit of overspray on the wall that you will then cover when the wall is painted. Does that make sense?
      Windows I use plastic sheet drop on a roll with q1 tape and a 3m hand masker.
      I have another video on that showing masking walls up... Have you seen it?

      @@paulmaguire2592 which did you order? I use the yellow and orange colour the most, the purple is for delicate surfaces.. which is handy to have too.

      @@paulmaguire2592 i use the yellow for general taping up, the orange i use when taping skirtings up after spraying as they are a little bit lower tack.

    You need a bigger tip for you frames you should be able to do 22 frames in 30 mins then start again. Does that tip clogg up alot..
