    Over reliance on jump scares with ridiculous ear splitting audio. I understand what it’s trying to do; explore the trauma of trench fever with a supernatural element but it generally doesn’t work for me. A much more subtle approach would be more effective. That little girl facing the corner for example would be much more creepy if she actually did NOTHING instead of your senses getting blasted with a generic jump scare when you got near. Interesting premise and setting but let down by the generic approach to horror (trying to scare you by suddenly increasing the volume to where your brain rattles).

      Completely agree with your review of this...If it had more aspects towards war included instead of supernatural kind of encounters it would have made more sense. The ghost lady was kind of a lame idea. The head peaking and arms and occasional photo pop ups were good though in my own opinion. The audio was just odd at times, not even related to war in any way.

      most if not everything that our main protagonist experiences are probably from ptsd and hallucinations. Most of the loud sounds are probably metaphors for artillery strikes, gunshots, or screams of his now dead comrades. The jumoscares are used pretty well in my opinion, it's been a very long time since I've jumped from said type of scares.

    • @lokicooper4690
      @lokicooper4690 3 роки тому +7

      The problem is that most people blink so fast we don't really see it, so a blinking feature is almost pointless in a game. And that blink was way too slow. It was deliberate, and annoying.

    • @TommyRayzer
      @TommyRayzer 3 роки тому +1

      It really is probably the most annoying thing any developer could use. There is literally no need to include one in any game because anyone playing the game itself will be blinking too so there is no point in simulating blinking in game because every player will be blinking themselves. Fortunately there is an in game option to turn off the blinking.

    All that loud screeching, I want to find the developer and set off a fog horn right next to his ear 30 times in a row. Loud natural sounds (like something crashing or breaking) can be scary. Just loud screeching instead of invoking fear, just pisses you off.

    Honestly i think my favorite scares in this were the sound and subtle scares. Extra footsteps, distorted wailing, something peeking around the corner and shadows moving past you in the fog- and i could have sworn that there was one spot that the fog almost looked like a human silhouette? The rest were kinda meh, they made me jump sure, but were hardly "scary".

    The developer has made a number of changes since this playthrough. I highly recommend trying a playthrough of this again. For one thing the developer has made a "No Jumpscare Mode", which is actually more like a reduced jumpscare mode but it certainly relies a lot less heavily on all those cheap jumpscares. Also anyone not listening to this playthrough on headphones I highly recommend you do so. It is much easier to hear those footsteps that you can virtually always hear from the moment you find the second fetus doll. You can also turn off the blinking effect. I kinda wish he had a proper encounter with the enemy in this playthrough so you can see it yourself. But I am sure that you all know what the enemy is in the game. It is that headless monster thing that you see near the beginning.

    If the dev took out most of those jumpscares, this would be better a game. The loud noises are a bit much, but I mean...war is loud. Those didn't bother me as much as the excessive jumpscares that weren't even scary. This game would be way more creepy with just being super atmospheric, with like 1-2 jumpscares and not as many loud noises.

    • @drakynoch
      @drakynoch 3 роки тому

      It would've been nicer if the loud noises had been war-based. Artillery, gun shots, soldiers in the distance screaming, etc.

    • @aviannte
      @aviannte 3 роки тому +1

      UPD. From the perspective of a WW1 history fan, the game didn't do justice to the horrors the conflict is known the best for. As far as the narrative design is concerned, this game could've been set in a generic abandoned house with an amnesiac murderer for a protagonist. I understand that it would be hard to impress horror players (or gamers in general) with a more realistic approach to depicting the trenches, but spamming the player with screamers was not the right approach.

    • @aviannte
      @aviannte 3 роки тому

      @@levibrown9136 To be fair, I doubt any amount of gore visuals would work on the intended audience. The gamers are generally desensitized to the sight of blood and dead bodies by generations of violent games, and horror players are doubly so. You would need a team of veterans behind the project for gore to make an impact on the player. Think A Plague Tale Innocence, for example. Its team, Asobo Studio, did a great job depicting the horrors of a battlefield by placing the player in the shoes of children. Take into account that Asobo Studio is a team of pros with budget and resources, while this game was made by a very small number of people.
      That being said, I agree that leaning into WW1 themes and adding the sense of madness would've made the game better.

    Normally I see a Slenderman framework game where you fix X number or random items and then escape I just tune it out. It's just an overused and stale mechanic like revolving hallways since everyone was copying the Silent hills demo. However, with this game there is some very solid ideals with a really well done atmosphere. Audio is very important to horror and the developer did a very solid job on that aspect. You need to limit the player so that you can set up some horror moments which they did limiting how much you can see. There were of course too many jump scares and jump scare pacing was off but a game like this is hard to test out by yourself. The direction was a little wonky which could be addressed to some extent easily by increasing the baby cry response to the whistle. Now I can think of more ways to improve upon the concept but just don't take it as me downing it at all. What was there is very interesting with some very solid ideals. I love love love the jump scare where you hear in your ear without warning I know you can't see me but I am standing right beside you. Always kind of creepy if it is done right which in this case it was done well. There is a lot more potential with this setting but overall I enjoyed the game.

    See... I really want a good trench maze horror game. The concept is properly terrifying. Imagine a game like this but instead of hunting nebulous seemingly random babies, you're looking for teammates or members of your platoon. And when you whistle, they whistle back. Except whenever you get close to one, you find them dead. Instead of the weird supernatural jumpscares, your character is in the middle of a traumatic episode and you just have the visions of people dead in the trenches, like when the screen flashes red in this game. Like, you turn a corner and instead of a random screaming woman you get a loud sound cue and a gory vision of your dead squadmates. And in the end, after you realize your entire platoon is dead and you make it to the end, you get captured by the Germans too. There's a lot of promise, and the environment in this game is properly scary as hell. But the cheesy, cheap supernatural jumpscares water it down and make it rather unsatisfying.

    I just want to say that I played this game recently. Umm. It got more difficult. It's almost impossible to escape from the monster. It can hear your microphone, the whistle's, and if you walk on wood it comes right for you. I died at around 6 fetus dolls and lost my progress. Never played the game again. Now though umm. Seeing this and finally seeing the ending. That fact that her head was cut off and her arms it made me realize the thing chasing James the whole game was really his dead wife of whom he murders when he escapes. She was pregnant which was why your finding fetus dolls. IT all makes sense and it is actually a fantastic and horrific ending to this game. I don't want to go anywhere near this again.

    I am very much a fan of horror that takes place during the Great War. Nothing compares to the dread of having to navigate narrow trenches. Admittedly, this one had quite the amount of cheap scares (I swear, so many indie horror games use that lame "I know you can't see me..." line); however, I still enjoyed the atmosphere - especially hearing those sounds of footsteps coming closer and closer, good stuff there. Still, those loud noises were absolutely painful and such a poor choice of implementation. Remember that indie game you played some time ago? The one with the sort of top-down perspective. Very much looking forward to that one. Also, I gotta say that this one kinda reminded me of Vanish, that old game where you are trapped in a dark maze with blind mole/bird monsters, just out in the open. Well, thank you very much for this one. Reminds me so much of the days when I used to record and upload all the time.

    This game's overall design very heavily reminds me of a PT clone game called Apartment 666.
    Just a whole lot of walking interspliced with that exact same slow ringing, light-swinging BGM, exact same "standing right beside you" line being played just at a lower pitch and lots of jumpscares (though granted, guess not as many as this one has).
    Even the sudden info dump thrown out at the very end is exactly how Apartment 666 ended.
    However, apparently they're not the same developer so don't know if it's just one great big coincidence or maybe it could be the same dev just under two different names.

    I kind of wonder if the explosive number of jumpscares is intentional. Like, one of the terrible things of war is that you CAN get used to the endless violence blood and murder--like we get used to the jumpscares, y'know? (not that that excuses the mechanic, it obviously didn't land right!)

    I get everyone’s upset with the generic jump scares and the amount of them but I’m not gunna lie or sugar coat nothing this game fucked me the fuck up!!! I was legit crying by the end and not just due to the horribly depressing ending! I hate to admit it but literally even after five in a row every fucking jumpscare got me and my heart feels like I just suffered a heart attack I’m in physical and mental pain right now! The fact that one person made this I’m completely in shock like this shit was incredible the audio and visual the fear I got from it the jump scares no matter how generic and many there were it alll worked for me I was completely out of breath hiding under my covers and crying the whole time no joke I could never play this game so thank you cj for taking the punch for me and so many others and if the dev ever sees this my hats off to you man cuz this was probably one of the best indie games I’ve ever seen especially it being a one person job I’m absolutely in love with what you’ve pulled off I know it probably took a lot of work and heart so I really give it to yah you won my vote for the game and it’s on my top games list for sure! That head or torso poking out got me every time I fucking hated that no matter how much it happened!! I thought so many times that the baby crying was a fake trap and I got so fucking scared every time omg! But I do wish I saw the enemy once just to know what it was cuz I was thinking is it a soldier or a zombie or what? But still fucking dope game! 💚💚💚😭😭😭😭😭

But again fucking loved the game sick as fuck and I hope the dev is very proud no matter the criticisms!! If this is the work your capable of by yourself I’d love to see a game with a team and you working together it could be a real #1 game in the world situation!! Never give up! You have real talent!

    I think if you use WWI as the context for your game, you have to earn it, other than just using trenches environments, whistle sounds, flashing photos and a big info dump after 50 minutes. I'm not trying to shit on the game, but this was super tedious to watch, between the environments with almost zero variation (we get, it, trenches), the ear splitting and way too numerous jumpscares and the absolute lack of storytelling (except, once again, at the end). I honestly feel the game would have been more effective with notes splintered throughout, and a runtime of maybe 15 to 20 minutes. Side note : any news about that super cool pixel art game (if memory serves), also taking place in WWI, of which Chris played the demo a few months ago?
