The animation team all visited Chicago before starting work on Gunsmith Cats. They recorded real ambient sounds from the city itself to use for the show. Additionally, they filmed a real GT500 driving around a course in a parking lot while they were there, which they used as reference when animating the car. There is a great "Making of" video out there that goes over these details. It's a fun watch, and so cool to see the effort and passion of the animators.
They got every detail right!: The interior in the GT500 is accurate right down to the snake emblem, even the tires literally say "Goodyear Eagle" on them! The Mercedes wasnt too bad either!

I can remember how in a random anime called "Dantalian no Shoka" the characters are riding in a Ford Model T and the main character is accurately controling the column-mounted throttle with the right accurately!

It looks to be a 1967 Shelby GT500 KR. The Mustang from 'bullit' is the same year as this one, meaning they share the same overall engine... Shelby just added a higher-flowing exhaust and tuned the motor for like 15-20 extra Horsepower...

Beautifully detailed and hand drawn animation from both Japan and America is such a lost art. It needs a revival in both countries. Also, We need more inclusion of cars in shows. I think people underestimate how great a badass car/cars can imprint deep into some ones mind.
It's so weird seeing American freeways and neighborhoods in an anime. It'd be like seeing an accurately depicted downtown Japanese city in Family Guy, which you would never expect from Family Guy.
Ah yes, the good'ol days of anime. There's just something about this era of anime that feels like its missing from modern anime. Unfortunately I'm not proficient enough to articulate what specifically that is. I guess back then when they were making OVAs, there was more passion, more care in what they animated. The motivation wasn't "Hey how much money can we make from this?, it was more along the lines of "Hey, let's just make something really cool!"
This was also hand drawn; by the late 90s these kinds of scenes with vehicles, lots of movement, etc. were done with CGI and made to look like they were still hand drawn and animated. As much as I'd like to see more hand drawn animation, I can understand why it's died out; it's not cost effective to dedicate dozens of people and weeks of work to a single minute of animation, especially in the age of streaming (and pirating).
It was the staffs on the OVAs. OVAs and movies paid better than TV production, so the animators OVAs got were the people who'd mastered their craft over decades. The people working on OVAs weren't in their 20s and 30s. It was people in their 40s-60s. They were the prestige productions made by the people who'd learned all the tricks of hand drawn animation and mastered them, OVA is where animators in Japan aspired to making it to some day. The 90s OVA and movie productions really was The Old Masters of japanese animation making one last ride at the height of their technical skill. OVA only production houses went under in the 00s, and movies were the forefront of digital, the skillset withered to where noone can do it anymore. It's a dead artform. But, we got one decade where the best of the best who'd spent their entire lives doing it got to show off.
It's on the other video for this scene but it bears repeating that they actually recorded a real GT500 for the sfx they used here. Now that's one thing they went and actually got right instead of resorting to stock v8 sound effects lol

The one thing no one talks about the old anime is that the cinematography for the action scense for fking gorgeous and well choreographed like high class movies. But damn the amount of work and effort put into the detail of cars and movement is pretty spot on. Just the don't put too many frames in the movement since its old tech, that puts modern anime to shame when they have the vast amount of tech to do all of that but they don't.

They actually found a real GT500 and spent hours recording it. Same with the different guns. Those were actual gunshots they recorded. This was a niche OVA series in the 90s. It was far more popular in US than Japan despite anime still being a fringe scene back then. They really don’t make anime like this anymore
Great animation work, the car slides and rolls in a realistic way. Usually in chase scenes like this they just fishtail every corner but here the rear slides a bit and is gathered up while the chassis rolls to the outside.
Full Stop. Won't lie. This Anime made me fall in love with the Shelby GT500. Sure it was a nice car in real life. Just this anime. Ah. So good. Even with all his BS logic.

Good looking animation. Physics make absolutely no sense but it looks cool. Also it seems that if a car jumps it explodes. But given the way the cars where moving I guess that's not a surprise.
That single scene probably cost more than entire season of modern anime. People forget that 80ies were golden years for Japanese economy so they could afford it, those times are long gone thou.
