No, not really. I mean, there was a bit more static detail here and there (on occasion), but the action scenes were boring and drab compared to stuff that came out later. It was the mid-late 90s when things got really good.. ie GitS, Bubblegum Crisis 2040, Appleseed, etc.
it was better funded. Japan's real estate market was massive so the Japanese had tons of money to spend on whatever they wanted. Millions of dollars for an obscure OVA. Once their market crashed in the early 90s, amazing stories would be lucky to get 60k per 20 to 30 minutes. The 80s and early 90s ultra violent and some awsome stuff was really niche. It never made money but at the time they did not care because the real estate bubble. Once the buble burst well you can tell how drastically things changed. If you get 150k you can make about 30 minutes of anime, anyone can do it but obviously companies want to profit off it. 150k is a lot of money for a cartoon episode that can take decades to make a profit.

There definitely were anime for schoolboys/girls, but it was only a piece of the pie. There was so much more variety and richness back then. Now it’s like almost everything is made by the same few people.
IRIA & Sci-Fi's Anime '97 changed my life. I was 6 & probably way too young for it, but that movie, Green Legend Ran & Akira showed me that animation wasn't necessarily just for kids, that it could be art. Dark, extreme, lovely art.
Iria was such a badass. There was so much of it that stuck with me through the years, I'm glad I eventually found her again! Also, I am starting to think this era of anime is where Michael Bay developed his love of everything exploding lol

Iria: Zeiram The Animation was one of the first anime I bought, as a kid, back on VHS. Stylistically, it's always been one of my favorites of all time and the OP is in my top five favorites as well. The show might not be anything special, but it's aesthetic af.
God damn I miss this era of anime! I love all the tech and inventive fight sequences. Anything close to this now is done almost exclusively with 3D, which I'm not against at all, but it just doesn't give the same aesthetic as the hand drawn stuff.
There was just something that made 80's/90's Cyberpunk Anime the best. They just had such a unique sound and look about them. Stuff like Appleseed, Dominion Tank police to name a few.
Saving the best for last, I see. Iria: Zeiram definitely a pure jewel. Keita Amemiya should remake the live action into a series in the way he made Garo.

It was at like 2 in the morning and it was around the same time in my life that I found Aeon Flux. Iria left such an impression on me though, and I was hooked. I had forgotten the name of the show for years, because I only saw it that one night. But I found it again like 10 years ago and immediately bought the DVD collection. I love that series.
It's difficult to recreate anime like these...despite having a related genre each anime has their own unique design and stories which kept them each very original. The attention to design, the characters, the plot twists, politics, etc. God I miss this era of anime!!
Maddox-01 was a very unusually styled anime for it's day. For some reason I keep thinking there was an older version of Silent Mobius in this style, or maybe that was never the case. However BGC was a favorite of mine. BGC was one of many anime OVA that came out of AIC's studios during that era. The 80's and 90's where a great year for so many experimental works. Good or bad, seeing them now...is a piece of anime history you'll want relive or experience.
The production designer for Bubble gum crisis was the director for Maddox-01 and had the titular suit designed to look like a very early predecessor to the AD Police power suits from Bubble gum crisis so more high tech like prototypes are before being refined for mass production (and converted from military to police use).

I remember when BGC was being released to VHS in the US. My gaming group would wait for the next episode to be put out. We chipped in and the GM bought the video. When Ep 5, Moonlight Rambler came out, he didn't let us watch it as he was using it in the Shadowrun game. When we did watch it, it turned out to be one of the best.

I finally watched both features again. Finally had finished the entire series of BGC and seeing how all those episodes tied together.
There was one anime battle from the 90s that could have been an honorable mention. Tekkaman Blade vs Tekkaman Evil-final battle: Uchiyuu No Kishi Tekkaman Blade.
I have that anime series in my closet. That an Escaflowne will always have a softspot in my heart. Now I need to re-watch them. To this day I have never finished Tekkaman. It took me what seemed like 20 years to finish Escaflowne, I just did not want them to end. Oh the Nostalgia, I have finished DBZ like 20 times though...
I absolutely love love Iria, but wouldn't call it cyberpunk: more sci-fi/adventure! Her heart is DEFINITELY as badass as a Knightsaber though! Gotta love that sexy armor and attitude!
Some people think animations, are for children, but not. I like because the artist are very skilled and transports their habilities to animations. The best animations are handcrafted.

It, inspired me to do a cyberpunk comic (little thing for fun), when I was in school.. I actually even used the character I created, for the Cyberpunk pen, and paper game.. I'm going to dig around in my childhood artwork, to find the character, rework, and use him as my created character in Cyberpunk 2077. 80's/90's were truly the absolute best.. There was so much magic, and inspiration in it, that I just don't get from MOST of the anime today.. Even the music was better, and it's not even a nostalgia thing, because I am seeing anime, that I never got to see from the 80's/90's and it's amazing!

Angel Cop was pretty brutal. First time watching it, and seeing that everyone dies except for Angel. Left a bitter taste in my mouth, but seeing Angel suit up at the end was a nice surprise.
Man Bubblegum Crisis is one of my favorite cyberpunk anime of all time! I also didn't know that there was a Zeiram anime, I only ever watched the Live Action one which was questionable at times, but man did it have some great transformation scenes!
Man, the story boarding for these must have been crazy!!! 3:35 I found myself thinking "DUDE! Someone hand drew that falling perspective and it looks that real (physics wise) and amazing". Its scene like this that really show how, just because its a cartoon doesn't mean it is just for kids but a true art form. thanks for sharing!

i remember when i bought 100 vhs original anime videos off ebay. had a lot of cool anime movies and ovas. man was a out my freaking little mind when they arrived. had angel cop,maddox ad police. all the 90s great. was in heaven. just discovered anime at the time, about 11 years old. was loving the ultra violence and coolness.
I always say whoever designed these cartoons or animated theses shows isn’t human or know something we don’t because these animations are so insanely detailed the substance behind every design makes you believe these types of things are very possible
forreal. my favoritie anime. if you liked iria watch the original bubblegum crisis from 2032. the same things i liked about iria i found in this show. its only 8 episodes, but i highly recommend it.
Iria Zeiram was the first anime I ever saw. I was like 4 when it came out my auntie brought it home from Blockbuster and I remember that was the series that made me fall in love with Anime (specifically mecha) I never remembered the name of the show until I saw this video.

Man Bubblegum Crisis is one of my favorite cyberpunk anime of all time! I also didn't know that there was a Zeiram anime, I only ever watched the Live Action one which was questionable at times, but man did it have some great transformation scenes!
Man, the story boarding for these must have been crazy!!! 3:35 I found myself thinking "DUDE! Someone hand drew that falling perspective and it looks that real (physics wise) and amazing". Its scene like this that really show how, just because its a cartoon doesn't mean it is just for kids but a true art form. thanks for sharing!
i dont know what the hell is up with the anime movies and shows today but i sure do miss all of the old school animes that always have me excited to watch, im gonna download every old school animes i love, and these are one of my favorites

i remember when i bought 100 vhs original anime videos off ebay. had a lot of cool anime movies and ovas. man was a out my freaking little mind when they arrived. had angel cop,maddox ad police. all the 90s great. was in heaven. just discovered anime at the time, about 11 years old. was loving the ultra violence and coolness.
I always say whoever designed these cartoons or animated theses shows isn’t human or know something we don’t because these animations are so insanely detailed the substance behind every design makes you believe these types of things are very possible
Iria is the best! I never saw the Bubblegum Crisis original show. I started with the Tokyo 2099 show
forreal. my favoritie anime. if you liked iria watch the original bubblegum crisis from 2032. the same things i liked about iria i found in this show. its only 8 episodes, but i highly recommend it.
The 1998 reboot was garbage. Even the people who made it were not that happy with it in retrospect.

iria is a fuckin classic and is so under the radar these days it deserves a spotlight like alita got its perfect for a return
The one with the tank is awesome. One of my favorite scene is the motorbike escape in the city in venus wars (begins at around 31min).

Iria Zeiram was the first anime I ever saw. I was like 4 when it came out my auntie brought it home from Blockbuster and I remember that was the series that made me fall in love with Anime (specifically mecha) I never remembered the name of the show until I saw this video.
Dude, this stuff was my jam in high school.
Also: basically every scene of "MD GEIST" 😀
And i always loved the half-naked Naomi Armitage kick butt; especially in the final battle.
