    Bubblegum Crisis - The Story of Knight Sabers 1987
    This IS Japanese animation at it's finest!!! This was the Golden Era, the Japanese were decades ahead of their time with this free-style art form!!!
    Even to this day the animation still looks incredible!!! I still have the original OVA Laserdiscs imported from Japan on this show!!!
    Those truly were some good times!!!

      @@fmartin59 A Japanese Pen-pal, this was waaay before the internet!!! We would communicate by writing and mail our letters to each other overseas. I told him about Japanimation, and he sent me magazines on anime shows, I started this hobby in the late 70s into the 1980s.
      Also, my college buddies, we were all hardcore nerds and geeks dedicated to this hobby culture. Mobilesuit Gundam came out in 1979, I got my first taste of Gundam in 1981!!! I found out about Mobilesuit Gundam from a relative who was stationed at a U.S. Air Force Base in Japan, he used to send me all kinds of cool stuff from Japan!!
      1987 is when my college buddies and I first saw Bubblegum Crisis. In 1988 we were the first to see AKIRA before ANYBODY even knew about it!!! My Pen-pal from Japan sent us a S-VHS copy of AKIRA in Japanese language, so many shows we viewed that were absolutely unheard of here in the U.S. during that time period!!!
      Gundam, Bubblegum Crisis, AKIRA, GunBuster, Crusher Joe, Dirty Pair, Robot Carnival, Kamui no Ken, MACROSS, and hundreds of other anime titles!!
      I also attend the very first anime convention in the U.S., I believe it was either 1990 or 1991. I think it was called Anime -Con 1991, and it was in San Jose California.
      That was more than 30 years ago!!!! My God, has it been that long?😳

      What was great about the early anime cons was how the Japanese guests would "let their hair down", so to speak, because they knew the Japanese media wouldn't be keeping track of them.

    With the color palette, tension of what the plot gives to the characters, the song in the scene, and the overall message of what transpired.

    This was one of the calmer episodes, with nice scenes of Priss not moping around being very vaguely suicidal, and a minimal AD Police body count.
    By the way, Leon did not use "an RPG." It was a pistol, not a rocket launcher. The actual projectile appears to have been a bullet-trap type grenade, probably with a plain HE warhead (a shaped charge would not impart enough force to divert the car). Such a grenade is usually fired from a rifle barrel, but Leon's macho powers let him use a revolver chambered in Stupidly Magnum.

      Both series are great... a lot of the basic mecha designs were re-worked from the original for 2040. I could be wrong, but I feel that the motoslave & 'super bike' concept were recycled and expanded by the newer production team when BGC 2040 was made...it's a shame the rumors of a next season [BGC 2041] never panned out.

By the same token, Mospeada Ride Armor [ie Robotech Third Arc of Cyclones] concepts were also refined for the Motoslaves that could transform into independent robot humanoid drones OR extra armor with weapons for the Hardsuits

It's clear this like Gundam ZETA inspiried the mech style in the 90s, but I would say this feels more like the darker stories like Evangellion and Blue Gender. the fashion in some of these old animes/shows are badass! it still feels timeless it inspired the way I dress til this day, dark green or blue shirt, (button up and tucked in) dark military/work style coat, black pants etc, everything with an athletic fit (since I lift and run) and usually spiked hair. damn these OVAs were too ahead of their time.

    If you like this scene there is similar stuff in Megazone 23 with a much chunkier and more armorered up bike which actually transforms into the full blown mecha. (not a mere powered suit like the Motoslave, but a mecha) The designs of these bikes plus the Cyclone from Genesis Climber Mospeada made me obsessed with the mecha genre in general in the 1980s. I now own the rare Beagle Ride Armor 1/10 scale toys (AKA as the "Cyclone" from Robotech in the US) which goes for a nice amount of money on ebay. The company Beagle went under and it can only go up in value. I think if they ever do the live action robotech movie they need to combine all the 3 transforming bikes from Bubblegum Crisis, Megazone 23 and Genesis Climber Mospeada to make the ultimate transforming bike/mecha thing. They can strike while the iron is hot. There is a reawakening for more cyberpunk themed shows. (Cyberpunk Edgerunners helped a lot)
    Although I like the transforming robot in this I feel like it is truly unecessary as the heroes are already wearing powered suits. They don't need a bike that transforms into ANOTHER powered suit hahaha they really overdid it in this anime. Think about the lag: You are wearing a hardsuit, plus the powered suit of the transforming bike. Not really practical. The mecha bike in Megazone 23 made more sense since you are inside a cockpit which offers more safety. If the bike didn't transform in this anime it would have been ok because all they would need is a helicopter/dropship type vehicle to fly above all the city traffic and drop them off from the sky. No need for them to go into the subway, risk bashing into civilians and killing innocent people, and having to take shortcuts on the ground to get to the bad guy. The chopper can just bypass all that and fly in a straight line to the target. If this anime were to be updated today I could imagine they add a wingsuit type backpack upgrade to the hardsuit for air missions so the knight sabers can fly in the air and glide to where they need to be. (like batman with his wings and incorporate some nanotech - these old designs would be their "origin story" tech which would be older but-still useful for modern day)

    • @DPXEntertainment
      @DPXEntertainment Рік тому +1

      The writers didnt take full advantage of the Powered Suits' usage. The reason for the Powered Suits was that it provided heavier firepower, and greater mobile strength, though with the tradeoff of slower mobility (with some armored protection to make up for it). The jet boost allowed for low-altitude flight (including underground tunnels & passageways), allowing the Knight Sabers to travel greater distances, with greater speed, without using up their own hardsuit's internal battery reserves. If the writers fleshed it out more, the powered suits could have given the hardsuits a temporary recharge, while synced to the powered suit.

    • @UToobUsername01
      @UToobUsername01 Рік тому

      @@DPXEntertainment Yes I love the concept but I think the Megazone 23 transforming bike makes more sense. The Knight Sabers could have invested more money into autonomous mecha that follows them around as a heavy weapons specialist mecha that can be commanded to go to a certain spot for pickup. Or a chopper like transport for when traffic is dense. They are just vigilantes so perhaps it makes more sense they don't have bigger vehicles because it helps them hide their identities from the government. But as I mentioned there is no excuse to not have something that enable flight with today tech. IE the wingsuit upgrade as you see in Gundam whenever a ground mecha needs some air capabilities. (the back section can be reserved as a hardpoint for over-the-shoulder backpack weapon, or as a jetpack with wings for manueverability. (Super Dimension Maross had this too which aided the Valkyrie Fighter in robot mode to boost around) A heavy weapon Megazone 23 type would be better than a big powered suit simply because it has more armor. Generally if you are going to fight another big mech, you also want a cockpit that can withstand an attack from a big mecha right? So the transforming bike armor suit in this just feels like a stopgap technology to plug a hole in their range of loadouts rather than a well-thought out design. It's like a low budget form of a mecha despite being cool. Notice how they all had one and when Priss ditched her motoslave, she didn't set the bike to automatically transform into robot mode and go into autonomous mode so it didn't have to crash and explode? (like a disposable nappy) That shows how little the characters care for this disposable piece of crap. LOL Whereas in Megazone 23 the pilot keeps his mecha alive for the fight using all its abilities. It's not a disposable machine but a piece of high tech experimental equipment that can shoot through walls to kill targets and scan stuff. The pilot is buried right inside the centre of the mecha and doesn't have to worry about smaller arms fire hurting him. (neither do the knight sabers because they have two suits on, but I am talking about the limits of just the motoslave itself, not the hardsuit they wear all the time)
      In anime energy is never a big problem as it is almost limitless in many shows. (even macross valkyrie fighters use a clean form of thermonuclear power from their reaction engines that doesn't hurt the environment meaning they could fly indefinitely in the sky) I generally like the overall SIZE of the mecha in Bubblegum crisis though: they are small enough to fit into streets and not wreck the floors, but tough enough to withstand punishment. Patlaor took this approach: a mecha could be loaded onto the back of a flatbed truck and delivered to the area by the driver while the mecha was lying flat on the bed, and it would get up from the back of the flatbed truck like a patient on a stretcher. So it could walk around without damaging the property of the civilians in the city and wasting so much energy running to the scene itself. Anything bigger than that I tend to call BS on because it would be too dangerous to use in a city. (you would get clogged up in traffic and couldn't move without crashing into things and killing your own people) That is why I think a helicopter/gunship type vehicle to airlift them makes much more sense. They would drop down from the chopper in wingsuit and glide down to the target while the dropship provide air-to-ground support. But as mentioned maybe they don't want to attract attention so they kept it to small mechas only. A modern day remake of the show would probably have a hacker type character (probably on 4chan) working at Genom to leak all their tech to the knight sabers so they can improve on their designs and make superior versions of the mechas and modify them to high performance to deal with Boomers. And the Boomers would be actual "Baby Boomers" whose minds were taken from hospital by Genom corp to make the cyborgs to see if they can last long enough against government swat team as proof that their weapons can help violent revolutionaries to fight the dictators who they sell the cyborgs to. Baby Boomers are chosen because they are hated in the future for having more wealth than everyone so the public justifies the transhumanist plan to experiment on them as a way to give back to society. LOL Knight Sabers would also not be a band but boob streamers on twitch to help fund their research into new hardsuits. The simps would donate all their money to see Priss naked so she can repair her bikes.
