46 - Finishing Cement Render Removal on Old Farmhouse, Hitting a Main Waterline & Fiber Arriving!

  • Visiting the Château de Jumilhac last week gave us a better understanding of the materials used in the region's old buildings. While we're not renovating a château, it's fascinating to learn about the types of stones and building techniques used around here. It's an inspiration that helps us envision what our farmhouse could look like once it's restored to its former glory. This week, Philippe is back at it, removing the rest of the cement render to reveal the story the stones want to tell. Disaster strikes as Philippe hits a main waterline hidden behind the cement render. What a spot to put the main line that goes to the kitchen and bathroom! We had no choice but to fix it. We also got fiber internet installed, making a big difference in uploading our videos. This means a new network cable needs to be pulled from the network gear box in the new barn all the way to our working desk in the farmhouse. Between rain showers and thunderstorms, the cement render is slowly but surely getting removed. Check out the video for a before-and-after overview!

    I really appreciate the way that you think and apply your work Philippe, with good humour. In regards to the exterior 'plumbing' job , in Canada we would call it "a cowboy job", "slapped together", or frankly "a shit show". 😂😂 Looking forward to when it is all made right.

    Philipp, definitely built as someone else’s problem. No pride then they can charge again to fix it, a temporary solution is nothing to be sad about. With a family running water is essential and you are not yet ready to fully repair it, so a jury rig is perfect.

    Hi Phillipe, , a water drama you definitely didn’t need. As you said, who did the work years ago had little pride or integrity in their work - just lumbered someone in the future! It’s a good thing you are technically skilled to sort it out.

    The front of the house is looking great! I agree that the stones make it look rustic and more in line with how it should be. At least now the wall can breathe; so sweet to see Odin helping his papa. Not sure on your plans to cover the pipes for winter but we use ' pool noodles ' for the smaller ones and they work fine. Cheap too and low cost to replace.

    I love seeing Odin helping out. I’m a bit concerned with the open cellar steps; could you put back the old railing and block it off somehow so he doesn’t fall in? I remodeled my house when my kids were little and I remember how fast they can get into trouble when you’re trying to work. Everything is looking SO much better after all your hard work.

    "Not Notre Dame"...lol, it's still going to be just as fantastic on a slightly smaller scale. The water/sewer thing, I don't think will be technically hard, especially for Philippe and Odin, just one more thing to do with a lot of digging, at least you have the "tool" for that. Hello again, today's episode was worth waiting on. My wife and I enjoyed watching Odin helping his Papa clear the mess from the old render. Glad to also hear your WIFI system has been upgraded to Fibre. Does that mean longer videos since the upload speed is now a few minutes?🤣🤣🤣🤣 No excuses now . Your command of Engish is superb, much better than my few words in Flemish/ Dutch, mostly swear words. Do you mind if I occasionally drop in an English word such as corrode for what cement does to copper? Carroderen .

    • @DomaineSauvage
      @DomaineSauvage  3 місяці тому +4

      Hey Jean-Marie, i have to start writing down your suggestions because you are right they do sway in the wind and might start fraying if they rub too much. I will try to remember and see if i can put a temporary cable to take away the stress on the other ones.

    • @jean-marievennin8405
      @jean-marievennin8405 3 місяці тому +2

      @@DomaineSauvage Oh yes, but may i suggest that you place the "waterproof wire" and on hang on it a goutter with all the wires inside. That could be better than a pipe
      (150mm diam)because you have not to disconnect ALL the wires in that case. The gutter must have holes (water evacuation) every 300 or 400mm.

    Hi Anicia love your work on the videos about your lovely family and the beautiful farm and location it is set in. My partner Rosa and I love the bit when Odin helped his dad to shovel up the concrete and put it in the wheelbarrow.
    Phillipe as you are 39 please get yourself a really decent pair of knee protectors and wear them instead of just kneeling down without protection. As for the fix for the waterline, I suggest you get a couple different size extra long drill bits and drill at an angle from the inside out to end up in the cement hole where the water meter is located. This would be much easier than trying to drill from the hole to the inside of the house.

      Hey Catherine, Anicia does a lot of editing for the videos and she does a big part of the paperwork as well as her French is better then mine. We have created a business in France and she is doing the papers for that as well. She is an excellent cook so that takes up time as well and then we have our little devil Odin running around.
      So she might actually do more then me 🙏👍
      Odin is going to the daycare/creche now to learn his French and get used to having to go to school next year so Anicia will have some more time and film her own little projects.

    Beautiful! It's as if your house's pretty face can finally be seen. Maybe plant a flowering vine to conceal the smaller stones over the cellar doorway? Instead of trying to replace the small stones with larger ones.

      @DomaineSauvage  3 місяці тому

      We will probably get rid of the cellar because it causes more issues then what it gives us and then we will need to redo a part of the wall. But we have indeed ideas about planting vines on the wall with a trellis.

    I have a motto for any projects around the house, anything worth doing, is worth overdoing!
    it probably costs me more money, but it is worth it knowing my work wont fail, because in 35 years nothing ever has!
    Do you have access from the basement to below the bathroom and kitchen etc and will that make it any easier for you when you re-plumb the main supply to the house?
    Do you have any plans to restore the large window in the living room now that you will need to replace some of the damaged stone anyway?
    Great work this week Philippe, shame you had to repair someone else substandard work

    • @DomaineSauvage
      @DomaineSauvage  3 місяці тому +3

      Hey Scott, In the end it will save you more money! When we redo the farmhouse we are going to strip the inside completely and we will most likely get rid of the basement since it adds more complexity and we have enough space with all the barns together. We would like to give all the windows those yellow natural stone as surround.

    You have made such amazing progress. Your farmhouse is going to be so impressive. The trouble with disasters, like breaking into the main waterline, there are no polite ways to describe the idiot who put the pipe in the cement.
    Just to make you smile, when the original owner of my house built the addition to the house, he nailed it directly to the outside of the main house without even removing the shingles!!! He just cut a door through the wall and nailed the framing to the outside!! 🤷🤷🤷 I don't want to think he was drunk as a skunk, but I have my doubts! I didn't find out until about five years after I bought the house! 🤦🤦🤦 Please, just shake your head and laugh.
    With the rain, at least you won't run out of water this summer. Fire danger ought to be minimal.

    • @DomaineSauvage
      @DomaineSauvage  3 місяці тому +1

      Yes it is black pipe together with black fittings, easy and no need to glue so you can take your time to get it too fit right. Just always check if the O-ring is there and seated correctly. Also fasten the pipe well before and after a turn so they wont come apart from the water pushing, you should do this with pvc as well.

They don't like it when you bring that much but i rearranged some containers so it could all fit and it was all fine since then 😆

    • @DomaineSauvage
      @DomaineSauvage  3 місяці тому +4

      Hey Ann, the render causes moisture problems because cement doesn't let water through and these walls stand with their feet on the ground so they soak water up and it has nowhere to go causing problems. Modern buildings have a vapor barrier so the moisture from the ground cant go up in the walls and then you can render with whatever you want.
