57 - A Challenging Week With the Excavation Site Flooding & the Digger Track Popping Off.

A new week and a new set of challenges. At this point, we’ve learned a universal truth: rain equals mud, and mud equals... well, problems. Big ones. For example, Bob the dumper-bless his 4x4 heart-got stuck. Enter Fred the digger, our hero, rolling in to save the day, only for his track to pop off. Classic.
But hey, silver linings! Philippe’s added yet another skill to his growing résumé-this time, mastering the fine art of putting tracks back on an excavator. Oh, and amidst all the chaos, he also managed to install the Reolink Argus 4 Pro camera at the back of the barns. It’s going to come in handy when the area becomes a parking spot-at least we’ll have a front-row seat to any future misadventures!
With the rain pouring down and turning everything into a slip 'n slide, progress has slowed to a crawl. We’re starting to wonder: should we push through the mud or just call it quits and wait for better weather? Only time (and maybe the weather gods) will tell.
Enjoy this week’s video! Give it a like and drop a comment. We could use the motivation!

Philippe, have you considered dumping the spoil in a temporary location closer to the barn given the risk of getting Mr Thwaites the tipper stuck on the dam ridge or worse still, sliding down off the ridge? It would allow quicker removal of the soil behind the barn to alleviate the immediate issue of water ingress into the buildings and you could shift the temporary spoil heap in spring when ground conditions improve. I know it will add to fuel costs, but getting Mr Thwaites stuck and perhaps even Bob also in the rescue effort would be a game changer. Feel free to say NO Way - I'm just a couch potato and love watching this channel!

I will have to if i want to finish it, fuel cost is okay with these little machines but the dumper does drink a lot more when he has to struggle on the dam!

That's a good idea. Make the back-barn area into a large fish-growing pond, tap into the slope springs for fresh water, and proper drainage of the slope's (zone of saturation) water level. Terrace the slope, and have vineyard or orchard terraces, sucking up any excess waters in the soil by the vines, fruit trees, and nut trees. Terraced ig trees would be great water suckers as their wood is soft. Any willows planted around the fish pond would provide shade, but also massive water suckers, keeping the soil behind the barn, dry and maintained.

Congrats on your videos, they are really awesome! Regarding the pond you are creating at the bottom of your land, one thing that could be great is to bring there fresh water from your spring behind the barn. Yes it involves finding the source of water and quite a lot of piping, but if you arrange it so the water falls into the pond from a certain height (not to much), it will bring oxygen / current into it, and avoid algae invasion, and ycould give you a quite clear and sane pond You could then swim in the summer, and even the possibility to bring fish in it if you want. and it is better for biodiversity. With the slope on your terrain, I figure it could be possible. And with the excavation your doing now, it is the right moment to implement it if you are interested.
Anyway, keep up the good work, it is a real pleasure to see your weekly accomplishements!

I admire your persistence you are doing a great job by the end you will be quite proficient on a digger ,next time retract the idler with the digger bucket , if your going to slope at 45 do it as you go its not worth the risk and your going to have to go back and do it anyway , many years ago a bank collapsed on me no warning obviously i survived but had to be dug out its not pleasant , you dont have to take my advice after all only been a builder for 53 years lol

I have worked full time as a mini excavator driver, just use a slegdehammer and tap the tensioner wheel inwards, no need to use a strap. It doesnt damage anything.
Do it without the track on and it works real easy.

A great advertisement for Bobcat and your Dumper... nothing easy is worthwhile and you are creating something very beautiful. The important thing is to have the vision... failing to plan means planning to fail... Well done! You are getting there. There should be some sort of cage over the top of the dumper?!? Perhaps it is easier to jump off without one!! Certaining your barn is enjoying the relief of less water penetration already.

If you spread lime it would harden the ground. 5% to 10% lime is spread and tilled into the soil to “firm” up the ground. The lime reacts with the water in the soil to produce cementitious compounds making the soil firm and water resistant. Lime stabilization is an excellent choice when the soils contain a large amount of clay.

hi i think you need to make a 45 degree hill, you need to make a small channel so that water will go to the dam, also make a small channel by the springfor it to flow water , at the gate you can let the channel have a small ditch for cars to wash off their tires when entering or exiting the gate. The narrow channel will provide water for farm animals and place for ducks to swim, it would also looks nice and serve a purpose. Greetings from africa

As you now know, the track came off because it was loose ,I think that would be due to a new track stretching as it settles in on the sprockets, but now you have pumped it up with grease it should be fine, I changed mine before they were to worn, so I was able to get a lump of timber in under the track to push the tensioner back in and get the new track on. Your high bank, it will be a lot easier if you just slope it off at a natural angle of repose, if you go the terracing route you will have to build up each vertical rise with stone to prevent it slumping, and you do not appear to have a lot of stone laying around where you are, for each barrow full of terrain I dig out I end up with another barrow of stone! Building the barn wall close to the earth bank is really bad, but your plan of digging it away is excellent, the wall will soon dry out as I note the earth is quite dry where you are digging back. Stay safe! And enjoy ! Chris B.

    Odin is so adorable.
I think you'll need to switch from boots to hip waders, or maybe just a rubber suit! You've certainly had more than your fair share of rain this year. Maybe Mother Nature will turn her attention somewhere else soon.
Can you widen the dam some so that you can drive the top more safely? Perhaps dump some of you payloads over the sides of the dam instead of driving out to the end?
I know learning a new skill is supposed to be positive, but at the rate you're going you'll have an advanced college degree in engineering!
I think you have enough soil behind the barn to raise the elevation of your entire property. At least you got some sunshine! I hope you get the week you wished for.
    See you next week!

Serious about of standing water. The priority is to keep the excavation site from having standing water. Make sure ur drains run some where to get rid of the water. I do this and if the wet weather continues just level the digging as it’s too hard on the machines. Leave it until the ground is frozen and hard. Muck destroys rubber tracks. They are really designed to work on roads

I simply don't understand why you didn't dug away the dirt from the walls first. Respectively didn't free the barn walls from dirt first. I have been watching your videos for a month or 2 now and I like them very much but sadly I have to tell you your dam will not hold water unless you key it period keying it is where you dig a trench in the groundand then and you clear the vegetation on both sides of the ditch and then you pile your dirt back on top of that then it will cold water Just piling dirt on top of the ground will not hold water maybe you already know that maybe someone else's told you that I don't know

My main concern with the dirt behind the barn is the large amount of dirt being left that's close to the barn. It seems if you have water from the ground and the run off from the roof you'd remove the dirt closest to the barn first and put in a drainage ditch or some type of drainage system below the level of the barns foundation to keep the water from going into the barn and away from the foundation.

He’s busy removing all the soil closest to the barns in these videos, and discussed the french drain plan in an earlier video. One back and one front of the parking area to capture water from the hill and water from the roof (that I guess escapes gutters…).

Mud,mud, glorious mud.... from here in the UK the famous song comes to mind - first recorded in 1959 just before I was born but still a wonderful today.ua-cam.com/video/4zpDF3Py7r8/v-deo.html. Like farmers let us all hope in the UK and France for a drier year next year. (2024 the year it rained and rained)

Nice job with explaining the digging situation.
From 'our' point of view it really looked like you were taking away the soil on which the barn was built on.

I think you need a vibratory plate compactor to compact the top of the damn and maybe a layer if gravel?
