24 - Renovation Of Our Old Barn. Removal of Concrete Flooring & Rendering.
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 жов 2024
- We had a productive week! Unfortunately, part of it was dealing with the loss of two chickens to a fox and a hunting dog. We're figuring out ways to protect them beter during the day, considering options like electric fencing, although it's not going as planned. Also, we need to relocate our work materials to a drier spot than the current one in the old barn. With all the rain, the concrete there is causing water problems, so it's time to say bye-bye to it. Join us as Philippe takes you on a tour to show how excess water is damaging our buildings and how we plan to solve it!

I’ve said before, I don’t mind the fact that your not talking much. Some vlogs never seem to stop talking & don’t seem to achieve much. For some reason, I find your videos very relaxing? I wish that I was a lot younger & more able to do what you are doing. The video content, videography, a young family, the music are just right. Great work guys, Rob, Cardiff, Wales 🏴
Thx Rob, we do talk a bit more as we get more comfortable but we still keep achieving 😅I know what you mean by some vlogs they talk a full 30 minutes and did one stroke with a brush 😂but that is a skill by itself 😉
I have been quietly watching your journey since the beginning. I admire the skill, persistence and sheer energy you both bring to the endeavour. I am also learning from you. Your son is a delightful and clearly happy soul.
Thank you. Best regards, Phil, Suffolk U.K. 🇬🇧
Hey Phil! Thx for supporting us! Sometimes we look back to the beginning ourself to see what we have done already in this short time we have been here! Thx for the lovely comments. 👍
Geese are a good alarm system for the chickens because they are always watching over their flocks
This Thursday we are getting a rooster to protect them!
Amazing progress. Thank you for sharing your journey. John
Thx John!
What a lot off work guys. Respect for the hard work.👍🏻
Thx Jan!
Love watching you young people ,working the land ,with simple tools ,in your first video's ,Take care of your back ,U have done wonders with your land ,very hard worker ,👍
Hello Sylvia! Thx for joining us! The only thing i shouldn't do too much is digging manually, every time i do that my back will start hurting!
Time code: 25.11 : One of the practical solutions would be to dig a awider tranch as you show us at current wall to install a plastic sheet with a little "average" gravel on 1 meter and on all the length to channel the water to the evacutions. this will work as a gutter with Checking the slope with a laser.
Or add gutter to the roof and that is a lot of work too but this not solve water coming from the side of the Barn towards the well.
Bon courage and stay safe.
A gutter and french drain against the walls are coming on the other side of the wall 👍
Its nice to see someone take care of their property the way you do its so important to have a tidy surroundings, my dad was a farmer and his farm was always pristine ,great vlogs enjoy watching your progress
Thx, In my job as a plumber i liked it clean as well. I don't like working in a filthy environment 🙏😅
Happy new year Anicia, Philippe and little Odin!!!!Odin is so cute… we love him❤. You are doing great! A lots of work.. i know it is tough for you... a renovation, raising a small child, making videos,... you are doing this well!! We enjoy your videos ❤
Thank you for the lovely comment! We really appreciate it! ❤ Happy New Year!
I love your home is so beautiful and your baby is adorable
Thx Jenny!
❤adorable Odin
Philippe and Anicia are great
Doing farm life
So sorry you lost your lovely chickens! 😢 I hope your rooster idea solves the issue. Take care and stay safe, all of you. ❤
Yeah it was not fun and they died a week from each other.. What helped the most is the dog outside when the chickens are outside.
That's a lot of back breaking work there! It's going to be a fabulous workshop once you're done. Keep up the good work and hopefully we get some sunny days soon! Happy new year✨🎉✨
Yeah lots more to do 😬Happy new year and i really hope we get some better weather, i think next week but it keeps changing 😅
We love watching you all, your attitude and your spirit is indomitable. I'm really interested to see your thoughts and work to keep the barns safe which are similar to ours.
Thx LL, getting the water and damp away and a lot of the problems will disappear 😅
I just bought one of many homes over the years, twice divorced and would have done anything to have what you guys have, it's so relaxing to sit back and relax watching your family live this wonderful lifestyle, I'm so proud to know you and I feel like I'm there with you, your extended family is as well awesome, I'll keep watching for as long as your producing content, bradley Wickersham from Illinois in the United States, God bless you all 😄
Thank you Bradley!
I discovered your project about three or for weeks ago. I think l now have watched all you videos and love all your are doing. You must be the hardest worker I've ever seen. In the past few week of following your progress, I've come to love each and every one of you. Wonderful, lovely family. If l ever had the opportunity, l would love you come a help you one or two days. And you meet you all. I notice you ware an Australian foot ball shirt. I'm from there.
John W
You need to get some rest.I can see your handy work that was done by you and your wife.
Awwwww, I know one does get attacked to Chicken’s as I myself had just two. I rescued them from being slaughtered as they had stopped laying. Two weeks after living in their new surroundings with me,they laid the largest eggs I had ever seen and continued to lay. Two years later it was a kindness for our vet to send them off as they were old and suffering with Arthritis….💗💗.
I've been watching Make Do Grow UA-cam channel for a while. They battle moisture issues in their Portugal stone house restoration. It has been fascinating watching them conquer that problem. Your homestead is absolutely incredible and your work ethic makes me smile. Great job!
Hey karen, i have watched them as well, they do a great job!
Ok, am I missing something…I have been binging the last 25 episodes and have never seen a tour of the house…did I miss it? Have you not shown it for some reason? Just wondering???? My brain is in a concrete fog at this moment. It seems to me that gutters and a river to your river may be a good idea. I’m so glad that you are speaking so much more now-you guys are doing great!
We haven't done a tour of the inside, you see little snippets here and there in the videos of the inside 😅
Well done removing that concrete floor, I loved the condom on the head analogy
Haha, that analogy popped in my head because i found condom wrappers on the property 😂
Peppermint spray is a great rodent deterrent. It is not harmful to people or other animals, or even the rodents. They just avoid going where there is a peppermint odor. Spray it around wall bases, doorways, or other possible rodent entry points routinely.
Hello, good idea we will do this in the farmhouse. 👍
Gezondheid, liefde, licht en levenslust, ik wens het jullie alle drie toe. Werklust hebben jullie al in overvloed. Maak iets moois van 2024. Cheers 🍾
Thx Savaseul, voor jou hetzelfde gewenst! 😎
Get yourselves a guard goose...it really works
Hello, i'll have a look into that! Thx for the idea!
Happy new year everybody...
happy NY!!
A retention pond is a good idea I think.
Hey Brett, yeah our land is suited for it since our house and barn are almost on top of the hill and it goes down from there. We are also going to look into cleaning our well and putting a pump into it. So hopefully we will not have to worry about water in the future.
Já consegui chegar no vídeo 24, é preocupante suas costas, seus pulsos.
Precisa cuidar de si, fazer porém não estragar sua saúde. Boa sorte sempre. Alimente-se mais, está muito magro. Felicidades à linda família ❤
Re electric wire fence you can use a blade of grass to test, hold one end and touch the other end of the blade on the fence. No huge shock.
It gives me an insight into how much work lies ahead for you!!!
With Colorado's usual serendipitous weather, it is February 20th and its 16°C ! We had snow three days ago. 🤷
Have you considered a movable chicken run? It's basically 4 sided with an attached "floor" with the same fencing. The nice thing is, you can move the run around the property whenever/wherever you want to. Just pin it to the ground like you would a tent. Pull the pegs and drag it to your next spot. Foxes etc can't climb the fence, can't dig under it, and can't go through it. You can make the run any size you want. If you get worried about access from the top, it's easy to cover in the same fencing. Just a suggestion.
I think you need to dig down the foundation of the barns and waterproof the stones with a bitumen/tar, then put on a waterproof membrane. Put the drain in after coating the stones.
We are indeed thinking of a movable chicken run. Not too bothered with foxes as i put the dog outside when the chickens are outside and that seems to work good against deterring the predators. The barns i will indeed look at a membrane for against the foundation, i don't know if you follow Martijn Doolaard? He has a good episode where he does something similar to his old stone barns in the Italian Alps. If you haven't seen him he makes crazy good videos!!
If I'm keeping track correctly, it looks like both Mme. Sauvage and Mme. Maison are still with you, but Yellow and Orange each met an early demise. After seeing several of your vlogs regarding rain, I'm thinking a moat is in order for your barn. 😄 Fortunately, Phillipe's plumbing background should be helpful in designing and executing water remediation solutions.
Hey yeah, unfortunately yellow was killed by a hunting dog and then orange was taken by a predator . It sucked especially since you get attached too them. The chickens now only go outside if the dog is outside that way we can protect them. A moat or swale is coming further up the hill and directly behind the barns we will be excavating a "parking" space. Haha i am used to working with water but these amounts are a lot 😂
@@DomaineSauvage My late grandfather used swales for his farm on California's Central Coast. Swales are very effective means of diverting water and are very appealing because they can be filled with various types of ground cover. One swale on my grandfather's farm was so wide and deep that he built a small footbridge so it could be easily crossed when filled with running water and when dry. I'm sure you will design something spectacular to protect your wonderful stone buildings. Best of luck to you.
Great job
Thx!
Heb jullie ontdekt 😀🤗 ik woon in Aalst België .En volg vanaf nu jullie nieuwe avonturen 🎉
Hallo Ilse, wij zijn van Gent. Thx om ons te volgen!
Yes guttering is the first defense
It will help alot, in our old home we collected it and showered etc with it 👍
Only the young such as you both can do it !!!
It makes it easier for sure 😅
You can always check the fence with a multi meter!
But it is funnier this way 😅
Or touch it with a leaf of grass, it less painful
@@DomaineSauvage #truth 😂
love and best wishes
Thx Noel!
yes - chickens are a problem with predators - so many like to eat chickens - neighbours dogs - kites , hawks, foxes, poisoning from spraying by neighbours, lost two to a dog and poison on boundary fence lost one chicken - now I say I like the Carolina coops because they have everything enclosed including the chicken run part with the coop and it is all in one piece.
Hey Victoria, a few days ago a hawk tried to take a chicken!! It didn't succeed with the dog being outside when the hens are outside. We have ordered a rooster to help keep an eye on predators and alarm the hens.
vijver graven en de overflow pijpnaar de andere kant af laten gaan ben je van het wateroverlast kwijt
Happy New Year 🎉 lovely family, all the best for 2024 ! Greetings from Greece
Hello, Happy New Year for you too! Thx!
Bye bye concrete, good job! 👏🏻
Odin ❤ the cristmastree 🎄
He sure loves the christmastree!
Ay Odín es hermoso y se ve tan felizzz
Haha seguro que es un hombrecito muy lindo! 🤗
Very good Video & thanks for sharing
Thx John!
I just found your channel and subscribed. Much love from Oklahoma USA Jackie 🇺🇸💖
Hey Jackie! Thx for joining us, we are suddenly getting alot of new subscribers 👍😎
bravo cool
Thx!
Makes me wonder if the cows got sick from being in such an enclosed damp environment for hours at a time. Lots to remove but great that you have plans for its reusage. Best wishes.
Well that is actually a good question, we are not farmers but indeed it can't have been very healthy for the animals to stay in there during the winter.
You may well find an old drain behind the old barn that took away a lot of the water, over the years it will have slowly filled with soil and now no longer draining.
Dig a trench behind the barn, 1m deep, line it with a Geo fabric membrane, put in a 100mm land drain pipe, (in Ireland it is a red corrugated pierced pipe) , fill it with washed 20mm gravel. And you should run it out a ways past the new barn too where the hill is not so steep.
Mice love to nibble on electric wires
I haven't seen any nibbling yet, fingers crossed!
Thanks!
Hello! Thx a lot first time we got a super thanks ❤
Are you going to put straw on the chicken coop floor for the winter it helps keep out the cold
We did! The coop was very damp this winter will all the rain.
Love your videos- get yourself a goose or a duck with your chicken- the duck or goose with make a lot of noise when an intruder comes, dogs boards, fox anything that tries to attack the chickens the duck or goose will sound the alarm and you know that something is attacking your chickens
Het spijt me, Philippe, maar liever gij dan ik!!! 😋Dat is echt een rotjob! maar je hebt wel gelijk om het te doen...
I enjoy your videos. Your little one was quite disappointed when he couldn’t find the wires.😂 Is there a reason you haven’t clipped the chickens wings? Good grief, that’s an enormous amount of water behind the barns. I trust you’ll use an excavator to remove all of the necessary ground to redirect the water. That’s a lot of work!
Hi! Odin still has lots more things to play with 😎. We didnt clip the wings so in case they get attacked by predators they can fly away or in a tree.
I really enjoy your videos with your explanations of what and why your doing your projects...I wish you had more subscribers! People are missing out on great content! Odin is so cute and inquisitive...a great personality!
Hello denise! Thx for the lovely comment!! We appreciate the support and the subscribers will come if people like it. @@deniseiozzo8821
❤
T'as besoin d'aide! Passes du temps avec tes voisins! Intégrez-vous!
Bonjour Laurent !
If I was you I would put a permanent chicken run from the coop that way they can get out in the sun when you aren’t outside and let them roam free when you’re there
We keep the dog outside when the chickens are outside. Since then no more problems and when we go out i put the chickens in the coop.
Clip the chicken's wings and put the chickens in a fenced area in the morning until you and June are working outside.
I think I did mention the warning about the chickens.
That we lost one to a fox or marten?
Funny, odd that it is called a French drain?!
Haha yeah i would have to look into why but it is in fact called a french drain 😂
Food is more bountiful in summer for predators, they don't need your hens. Losing hens to predators, hunting dos etc is sadly 'normal' here.
Hey Kathy, we keep our dog outside now when the hens are outside! For now it seems to do the trick 👍
About foxes stealing your chickens. Feed the fox. I have one who's been coming to my door for 2. Years. I feed her a piece of raw chicken, some raw chicken liver sometimes a raw egg, other times i make her a little omelette and 2 breskfast biscotti's hardly any sugar. One your fox is well fed he/she will be too stuffed to eat a whole chicken. She's not tame, she comes when I call her but she's skittish when eating, always looking around. She's afraid of my cats; But. i can open my door and talk to her and she'll look up at me. I've no intentions of trying to make her a pet. She is still very much wild.
We have a lot of foxes but for now they are not a problem anymore if the dog is outside when the chickens are outside.
I’m not very technical but the changed format of “Likes” “Dislikes” etc doesn’t seem to be working. 🤔
What is not working Terri? UA-cam changed the dislike button as in people cant see how many people disliked a video, but we can still see the number.
I worry that you are breathing the concrete dust and other dust. Please wear protective clothing and gear AND wear a back brace, etc.
I need to wear a mask more, i do have a brace but since i have the little digger i don't need it anymore.
I have to call my bank in the States and get them to open a line to France Italy is the only country; can use it in I can do that tomorrow, ok?
I am not following with what you mean?
Pacifiers do not help with normal jaw formation and speech musculature development.
Hi Liz! Odin usually only gets his pacifier when he goes to sleep or when he's having a hard time. He gladly gives it to us without a fuss when we ask him to. ❤
If you wait much longer past 18 months he won't want yo give it up. It starts to affect his jaw and teeth alignment
As for speech and language development pacifiers do not help articulation intelligibility for speech. Substitute pacifier with a lovey toy or blanket for his need for comfort when he is upset or ready for bed. If the pacifier disappears suddenly with the substitute lovey he will develop his speech and language skills at optimal level
