I love that Nick is encouraging supporting small businesses!
Your entry monologue is exactly why I started following you Nick. It’s rare to find ethics in this world. 💎
One Minute Knife Video ethics? Your threshold for ethics is a bit low
guysmalley my thread hold for ethics in this case: blunt honesty regarding expectations and motivations. Not addressing said motivations, just that everyone is clear about them. I grow weary of people with sneaking, shady, obsfucation based behaviors. Nick has always been brutally honest as far as I can tell: even states he’s a ‘random jackass on the internet’. I admire 🍻
Sorry. Fat thumbs. Bothe the thread and threshold....
Your consistent commitment to integrity is awesome. Love that you can make fun of yourself at the same time as you give critical reviews. I got lucky with my RAT1 at Walmart for $7 when they were on clearance
I’ve carried a Kershaw leek for the last three years, still my favorite edc. Is slim, sturdy, sharp, and easily re-sharpenable, the straight blade is perfect for slicing and draw cuts, and the spring assist makes it swift. If you treat it right it treats you right, don’t pry with it etc, oil it every once and a while to keep the action good, and they cost 40-50 dollars. I still have my first though, cause despite my having abused it, (I’ve used it as a hammer lol) it’s still running just fine. Not only all of that but if just feels nice with an almost all metal construction, (it’s got a plastic spacer along the spine where the blade rests) I absolutely recommend it.
The leek was my first real knife and holds a special place in my heart
The Leek is great but I prefer the Kershaw Dividend myself
@@garrettferrell6821 and the m390 dividend is only $75 which is a great option if you want to take it up a notch
Leek would be a great option but Kershaw forgot the fact that 12% of the earth’s population is left handed
Absolutely agree 100% I've carried a Kershaw Leek nearly every day for over 5 years. I've used it so many times the previously needle sharp tip is now slightly rounded and the blade is dull and should be re-ground. I've opened it so many times there is a hairline fracture from the thumb stud hole thru to the spine of the blade and the assist spring is wearing out causing it barely lock open. I have literally used this knife thousands of times, never oiled, only blew out the dust and grit with an air compressor. I've got a Benchmade 940 and a couple other knives that I don't abuse, but the Leek has been my go-to nearly every day. Just bought a Spyderco Para 3 as my replacement EDC while the Leek has been sent to the Kershaw factory for some long over-due maintenance, lol.
Perfect timing for some Christmas shopping. Love your stuff, you’re a legend 🔪
Great review! I love bouncing around budget knife options especially with unique locks or blades and this gave me some more ideas to give a try. Thanks!
I can definitely recommend the Kabar Dozier which is $20.
The most underappreciated budget knife out there. That's why it isn't on the list.
@Tom Smith I'm guessing patreon supporters get early access.
Gerber EAB or the prybrid
Meh. I want to love this knife so badly, but it won't hold an edge.
@@rpc717 I wouldn't be concerned about edge retention unless you use your knife a lot daily. I haven't once needed to sharpen any of my knives (except the ones that had no edge to begin with) since I don't use any one of them enough to dull them.
What a great budget list, nicely done.
Great and much needed video. Thank you, Nick.
Budget Knives I've been most impressed with:
- High End Feeling : Ruike P801
- OTF : Atomic Defender
- Auto : Boker Kalashnikov
- EDC : Civivi Elementum
- Ergos : CJRB Feldspar
- Tool Knife : Cold Steel Pro-Lite
Great content as always. Thank you. I love my Elementum and Praxis. Id love the fracture more if it locked. The QSP Penguin has been a much better knife than I expected for the price if plain in design. Kershaw and CRKT have many knives under $60. I really appreciate that i could show your videos to non knives people and they could understand them.
I own a number of the featured knives and my choice , hands down is the CJRB Centros. It's got a good action , nice style , perfect size and a great price . Both the Feldspar and the Rat 1 in D2 run a close second . One I missed seeing in the group was the Civivi Asticus .
The Tenacious is what got me into knives....kinda wish I'd never bought it lol$$$
I was happy to see they are releasing the Tenacious in S35VN..just wish they would release it the regular model instead of just the lightweight..oh well,I’ll probably get it and swap blades
Thanks Nick, great information as always.
Have the QSP PENGUIN and love it. Broken in it has amazing action. Waiting for my honey badger to arrive.
love my Byrd Crow 2 and Raven 2 but I always carry a Victorinox Tinker in my other pocket.
I LOVE Dylan Mallery. He is VERY interactive with his customers. Even shows progress and asks feedback with his fan base. He's not only a good guy but it shows he cares about his designs and fans. ❤️🍻
CRKT m 16s are a good starter knife imo...great video Nick. Thanx!
Glad I found this video since I'm starting to look through budget knives as gifts
That's a good point. Maybe I'll get some gift ideas from this one.
Look at QSP PENGUIN at Atlantic knife co for 27 dollars. Outstanding gift blade. Jean micarta is great
Amazingly sharp
@@robertblackstock6866 beautiful knife, definitely one im gonna pick up for Christmas
For something really cheap ($15-20), I really like my Kershaw shuffle 2. Perhaps a bit small for some, but it's lightweight, comfortable to hold if it fits your hand, and the tanto-style blade, while very short, is pretty good for any normal cutting/scraping you need to do. The bottle opener + flathead screwdriver on the end are also pretty handy.
From your past videos... Ontario Rat 1 & 2. I'm very happy with them! Highly recommend.
The CJRB large Feldspar has kicked almost every other knife out of my EDC rotation. Handsome, great ergos, easy to carry.
Jonathan Gates man, I have the small version and the detent on it is stupid stiff. It is so difficult to open. It flicks nicely when you do get it though. Regardless, there’s still a lot to desire about the knife.
The CRKT Pilar is outstanding...
Great content here...
Cheers.
I love the Pilar Nick, thank you for covering that EDC knife. A great choice! Fair insights as well, a solid choice. - jb
My brother has a Rat 2. As a “super” budget knife, it’s great. Love the build and action. That’s what set it apart from my Delica 4. The pull out blade somehow detracted from the feel, although as a knife it’s plenty solid for the thickest boxes.
Recently upgraded to Civivi Mckenna and I love it. It’s great. The action is great, it’s tiny and sliced. I haven’t been able to put it down since.
Great video I would have changed the Spyderco option to the new k390 options. Furthermore thank you Nick for informing new people to the community and continuously pushing people to form their own opinions.
Great video, and a great list of budget knives!! My wife is going to be thrilled when she sees my next knife order, I just put 5 of the knives you listed in my cart at BladeHQ! 😬
Thank you Nick. Some great gift ideas in budget range. Great idea for a video.
I carry one of two folding knives. And have a sheath knife for "off road".
CRKT Ruger Windage with the Zeff serrations, which I know a lot of people don't like partially serrated knives, I do plenty of work with paracord, vines and similar and the serrations work well. The aluminum frame adds enough heft and I find the handle very comfortable. Flip open on ball bearings. Easy to care for, disassemble, clean, oil.
The other is a Buck Rival II which is just a basic small pocket knife. Yes, the thumb stud is partly in the way of blade use which you have pointed out as a negative in other reviews, but a solid easily sharpened holds sharp well enough cheap knife that is riveted rather than screwed together, which does negate disassembly another Nick no-no.
I also have a 35 year Old Time Schrade Trail Boss sheath knife for "off road", batoning, using ferrocerium fire starters and other abuse. I've used that knife working in a tire factory cutting scrap tires and curing bladders. The blade didn't chip, didn't flex or bend and required less sharpening than the knives the company gave us. The sheath is still in good condition. It was made in USA. They don't make this one anymore.
Yes, I'd love to own a knife that doesn't require as much sharpening, flips open with almost no effort, is as thin as a steak knife with the strength of titanium, but I'm a budget kind of guy.
I would love to see in in depth comparison video between the pillar and the busker! Could be a great way to show how a similar looking knife can be made in a vastly different way :D
I absolutely LOVE my CJRB Feldspar (large). It's super well made and the bearing action is insanely good for the price. Under $50, it just doesn't get much better.
Thanks for these. There were a few that I really loved. I edc a big, expensive spyderco and have been looking for something smaller and less scary.
@@gaylordpantamime That metamorph is calling my name. My spyderco is just shy of 10" when opened and looks like its only meant for one thing...
Veronica Bellerose wow,that’s a big knife..and I thought my Autonomy 2 was a big Spyderco knife..lol
I love my Spyderco, but it stays home most days for that reason. The CRKT is pretty elegant, and comes in various finishes.
That Z-Hunter Moment at the end... you just made my day!
Much love from Switzerland!
Trying to sneak into the shot and being told no! 😂😂😂
Earned my thumbs up.
my collection is limited which I hope to change but my latest add is a Civivi Elementum, it is ideal for my preferred knife size. I had to add a touch of oil to be able to get a smooth flipper but it is now so deeply satisfying. The micarta scales look and feel amazing. I cannot wait to try more of these knives and am amazed by what people can now get for ~$50 price points.
Great list and really can't disagree with anything.
I would love to see a Non locking list .. with the amount of detent non lockers thrown out in the last year or so I think you could put together a very compelling list.
Any way great video... Stellar as per 👌🍻
The P801 is really great and Ruike customer service is helpful. Sent my boy 2 free replacement clips when he snapped one off. After 2 years the knife works like new.
CJRB Feldspar. D2 and under 40 dollars. Good ergos, good production values. I'm not a fan of Chinese made products but this is as good as a "budget friendly " knife can get imho. Their Gobi, Centros, or Kicker would also fit the bill. CJRB killing it right now with the budget niche. After that the Kershaw Concierge is an excellent choice.
The Feldspar is quite nice, yeah.
@@NickShabazz & Nick Nemo, the CRJB Feldspar comes with a nice micarta handle scales @ BladeHQ. $57, well worth it
I may be buying like half of CJRB's catalog when they start offering the whole lineup in RPM9 instead of D2.
Ganzo is also a neat brand to check out
Also a Chinese brand but they offer some pretty decent knives for the price
@Eye of the Tiger yess one of my first ganzo knives came in d2 but I honestly love their 440c its great as holding an edge and its easy to sharpen 😳
im pretty fond of my brass framed hillbilly boat anchor... AKA the Buck 110, or 112 where 3" or less is needed. easy to sharpen, tough and holds a fair edge.
if not BladeHQ does a CRJB Feldspar in D2 and excellent green Micarta handles for $57, they also do the centros in the same configuration as well.
Hard to go wrong with the 110.
Absolutely love the 110. The really need a thumb stud and pocket clip on the original. They made one with a disc but it's misplaced and in the blade path. The clip on it is excellent.
I definitely love my Feldspar as well!!
A lot of great budget knives. As of late, I have been carrying stuff that is light weight. KABAR Dozier, Buck Rival, 110 and 112 LT, Kershaw Skyline and Dividend, Cold Steel Finn Wolf, Victorinox small tinker, and Evo Grip series. I carry a Mora Eldris in my jacket or coat.
I own most of these, I love the Civivi's and CJRB's, but I keep going back to the RAT's. I give knives as gifts to damn near everyone I know and the RAT 2 is the one one I've given the most to family and friends.
Well done Nick and so freakin fast.
Excellent video.
Thank you
CJRB Ria is quickly becoming one of my favorites for EDC. And the fidget factor of it is addicting. It flies open with no effort, and it's not assisted. If a person is right handed and doesn't have really large hands, it's definitely one to consider.
I'm a huge fan of the Steel Will Cutjack. Light, strong and comes super sharp. I love the action and has good D2 steel for around $40.
For about $30, I'm really impressed with the Ontario utilitac 2 tanto.
Love my Ontario Utilitac 1-A, my EDC
The Utilitac is great, I love mine, it's better than the RAT 1, smoother action and has a really decent sharpening choil. I keep telling people it's good but they won't believe me lol.
@@londiniumarmoury7037 I don't think it gets enough love on UA-cam. It's an awesome value. If I didn't know, and someone told me the scales were g10, I'd believe them. Mine came super sharp, very even grind, perfect centering, and as smooth an action on phosfur bronze that you could want. I love the aggressive look of the tanto, it's a badass!
@@abc456f I love the handle scales and shape I can get a really good grip on it, the tip is great for utility work too, I like how the grind lines come out on the tanto point too. Really great knife for its price, so solid as well, could be worth double the price easily.
@@londiniumarmoury7037 They should release one with s35vn or something similar. I'd gladly pay a higher price for that.
I got a Crkt in natural g10 recently and I love this thing. It’s my smallest knife but very comfortable and is probably gonna be my new edc
I think the QSP Penguin meets all of your requirements! Very nice bargain knives
I missed the Steel will cutjack! Great little working knife
The edge you put on your pilar is beautiful, I want that for mine.
Absolutely fantastic. Love you big guy.
I got a Civivi Elementum recently because of your review, and it might be my favorite knife that I own.
A title that once belonged to the House Of Blades edition Kershaw Dividend, until I FECKING LOST IT.
The QSP Penguin. It’s a great knife! Micarta scales, Warncliffe blade, D2 steel and it’s a liner lock, I believe on bearings. $30.
Second this. It's a superb budget knife. The nearly ruler-straight edge is great for folks who are learning knife sharpening. Love the action, too.
The buck 112 slim is one of my favorites
Most often carry a Kershaw Blur or MIJ Black Gulch. But I've been loving my little Rough Rider Hawkbill. All 3 perform so well for me.
I'm looking at getting a nicer production knife. I've been interested in the 940 but im also drawn to the vox suru. Theyre a similar price point. Is there anyway to quantify a comparison of the 2 without handling them? I dont know how I could go about getting my hands on either cutrently without just buying one of them from an online retailer
Victorinox Cadet. It was my gateway into knives and multitools.
The Ruike P-801sf is such an amazing blade for the money. Actually I have several Ruikes and they're all special in their own way. Ultra-X is another new one that has been impressive.🙏🍻
I have had a byrd raven 2 and would recommend that in a second
Great Vid Nick!
I have 2 Kershaw recommendations. The first is the Copper Natrix XL. It has a 2.75 inch D2 steel blade, has a snappy ball bearing action, has copper scales, and a subframe lock. It's got good ergos even for my giant bear paw hands and can be had at or a little under 60$.
The second is the Kershaw Cryo, a Hinderer design. It has an assisted opening 2.75 inch 8Cr13MoV blade. It has stainless steel handle that has great egos, and as you pointed out in your video, is even better if you remove the weird thumb stud! It comes in at 35$
The Tenacious is a great knife, It's build quality at the price is amazing.
Love your video I would love to see the best slip joint pocket knife budget knifes
Spyderco UKPK.. Great slip joint EDC knife in a great steel. And perfectly UK legal!
I have to give a shout out to the Kershaw Leek. This was my first EDC knife and remained in my pocket for over a decade before I got a deal on a Benchmade 940 that I couldn't resist. My Leek never let me down and I still put it in my pocket today when I have a rotation of knives that cost up to 7 times more money. The Leek is a great knife.
The ruike p801 and tangram vector are the ones I have given to friends and they have really liked them.
I own the praxis, the p801 and the Kershaw Atmos. All are fantastic and very different in their own ways.
I appreciate this list!
I've heard some good things about the Svord peasant knife, do you have any thoughts? I'm also looking for a pantograph style knife - do you know if anyone still makes those of reasonable quality?
I have several of these and I still enjoy them. I would also add the Kershaw Link or Dividend to the mix.
You just can’t beat a USA made Kershaw for the price..My M390 Link only costed me $70,my most expensive Kershaw is the Knockout with carbon fiber scales and an M390 blade..my favorite is my KnifeCenter exclusive champagne gold Bareknuckle in 20CV..I also love my Dividend with the N690/CPM-D2 composite blade..Nick just doesn’t seem to have the same love for Kershaw that I do..I have lesser knives that costed 2 or 3 times as much..the Link in M390 and 20CV for $70-$85 is unbeatable..the Benchmade Griptilian in 20CV costs twice as much and IMO isn’t half as good of a knife as the M390 or 20CV Link
The new light buck 112 and 110 with pocket clips are awesome.
My EDC is a Victorinox Explorer Swiss army knife. The Tinker or Super Tinkers are also good entry-level SAKs. For something a bit bigger, the Otter Mercator (also sometimes called the K55K) is an extremely good knife for the price (~$30-35 USD at time of writing). There are versions in both stainless and carbon steel, and with a pocket clip if you look around carefully.
My first knife was a civivi Elementum. Agreed, great first knife for someone
NIck I need a knife with a glass breaker for duty use...also it would be awesome to have it as a last ditch fighting knife. what would you recommend?
I nominate the QSP Penguin for this list. Action once broken in rivals a pb Shiro, super sharp out of box, good materials, and less than $35 (you can get them on Drop for less than $25, and BHQ had them on sale a few months ago for close to $20)
I know their a couple bucks more, but I recently purchased both the SOG Terminus XR in D2 $55.00, and the Spyderco Chaparral in xhp $90.00. I really like both.
Hey Nick, which Spydy would be your next choice, 1 model up from the tenacious so to speak? Chappy/ delica maybe??
Just watched your review on the steel will cutjack c22m, how does it fair in this lineup?
The CRKT Piet is amazing and it’s taken over the spot of the RAT 2 for me.
Never change Nick
I love the Ganzo knives but the SOG Terminus XR is one of my most carried as well as the CIVIVI knives. My personal favorite at the moment is the QSP Penguin, and it fits the budget category well.
I would definitely recommend boker automatics, which most of them come in under 50 bucks and perform amazingly
I agree, the Kalashnikov 74 was my first auto.they are pretty damn cheap and can last for a long time...easily the best auto you can get in that price range
Yeah, mine was the mini strike and it fires great
Would you be able to do the best knifes that would be legal in more restrictive countries (non-locking,
Kizer mini Begliter, you're getting 154cm steel. Stonewashed blade, runs on double bronze washers with a teflon washer added in so that's 3 per side. Odd setup but the action is great on mine.
It's closer to the limit at 55 bucks last I checked. I think it's worth it tho.
Kizer Contrail has a similar setup. Not very smooth right out of the box, but oh boy that little blade flicks like hell and cuts like crazy😎 I thought it was overpriced (got mine in a combo-deal on AliExpress, or else I'd likely never have bought it), but that little chunk of knife is some serious competition for the likes of a Spyderco Dragonfly👌
I love Kizer knives, they are quality and very reasonably priced
Nick what’s your opinion on the steel will mini modus d2
Love my spyderco resilience and Kershaw Emerson cqcxl for beaters, obviously I prefer bigger blades for my edc. Favorite edc is the zt 804cf, had 3 of them, never should have let them go.
I have a d2 feldspar. Great life but it's edge and tip are so close to the end of the body it's cut me when I'm reaching in the pocket. I have to grind it down some to get better clearance. Don't want a bloody hand again.
Thanks Nick!
Remember when the Benchmade mini Pika II was in production and $30? I loved mine back in the day.
That was before Benchmade realized they could charge over 100% profit margins. 🤣
Sebastian m haha for real! Wish they’d come out with a budget line with knives under $60.
@@alpine1600s I'll bet that markup is even higher when you're buying a Civivi, WE Knife, or god forbid, a Reate😯 Even if they do pay their employees relatively well, their costs are going to be way lower than they are for US or EU manufacturers. I find Benchmade's cheaper offerings are actually much better value than you'll get from Spyderco in the same pricerange😲
Unfortunately Benchmade’s prices went way up and their quality control went way down..lol
Not sure what it is but I can’t stop carrying my CRKT Vizzle. A hefty carry but makes
The budget cut at $40. Thoughts???
Agreed on every single one Nick. The Rats also my budget GOATs😁👍
Krenshaw stainless steel liner lock Leek. Very pocketable, slim, strong lock, reasonably long-lasting edge and rapid one-handed deployment. Add a great fan base with a ready selection of customizations super reasonably priced. works great at opening boxes, cutting rope as well as peeling fruit.
Nick what do you use to sharpen your knives?
My budget folders are Steel Will Cutjack (D2, utilitarian blade shape, flipper tab) and Kershaw Atmos (mediocre steel, but great action and iconic design).
The ganzo fh71 is the only knife I've had under 100ish dollars that truly impresses me. And while ganzo may not have the best history design stealing, this one isn't a copy of anything that im aware of
The d2 holds its edge, and the flipper action is honestly better than my zt 0452.
Hard to argue with these selections, the SF 801 is still a outstanding budget choice if you don't mind a solid steel knife.
My favorite budget edc carry is the Buck 0722 Spitfire. It’s like $40 on Amazon. It’s a very lightweight, sleek, and (to me) a beautiful knife. I think you should review it since you enjoy thin, lightweight knives.
I just picked up a $49 boker widow strike auto, a fun and cool knife.
You’re hard to keep up with, but I love it. Lol.. great video!
Another option for the Pilar is the Pilar large which is a fantastic knife if your looking for something bigger. It also has a flipper tab if that’s a pos/neg to you.
The Buck 251+ is a nice knife with a 4 inch blade, tip up carry, and a slim nice design.
My current favorite is the Kizer Mini Begleiter.
It is small, but a fantastic knife for the money.
Picked up a centros and ria because of this video.
The Vector is super underrated. I love mine.
