This is hands down one of the most entertaining and enjoyable videos I’ve ever watched on UA-cam. Hearing Nick’s audible panic at eliminating knives made me laugh so hard.
I just got my Ontario Rat 2 in D2 steel yesterday and I love it. I know they aren't the very best quality and I'm still fairly new to the knife life, but it's great for what I need. It definitely won't be my last knife, considering that I only have 4. My oldest but not my first knife is a Bermuda Green Case medium stockman that was passed to me from an old family friend that had it for a few years before, and then I bought a CRKT Burnley Squid and Morakniv Pro S last year, and now the Rat 2. I know it's not much of a collection by a long shot, but the Rat 2 brings me a lot of joy. It flies right out when I flick it and it feels great in my hand and I've already started customizing it. Thanks for all of the content and for helping me to learn more about knives, steels and what tools/gear are best for me
That pain you went through picking through the last three was so real and so relatable. And whenever I feel that kind of affection and passion for my gear... I see the face of Nick Shabazz.

I carry a Leatherman Wave and a Rat 1 with D2 blade for the same or less money than the Leatherman Charge. The multi tool gives me tool options that help me avoid abusing a knife blade and the Rat 1 gives me a bigger more comfortable handle (big hands) for longer cutting tasks. The wave also has a serrated blade which means I am carrying 3 blades. This gives me a lot of extended cutting time. But who said knife choice had to be logical? Nick taught me to carry what brings me comfort and joy. I think Nick enjoys the pain of forcing himself into making these decisions. Kinky!
Stuck with a choice of only one blade, it would have to be a Leatherman. I carried a Wave for years but now it's the Signal for the hammer. Also the pocket/belt clip comes already on it. That and a compact razor blade utility knife is REALLY all you need, (but I still carry more...)
LarryEMorse I liked carrying the Wave with a pocket clip but recently had the tool open in the pocket on a number of occasions. Not sure if this was due to the wear and tear on the tool or the fact that I scramble over machinery all day but was proving dangerous in certain situations. I now carry it on my belt using a RAE sheath which carries secure and easy to deploy but Is prone to scratching paint if you get too close to objects. Something to keep your eye on as the tool ages. Stay safe brother!
@@kevola5739 I was carrying the wave on my belt using only the clip and never had it open, but that's aNOTHER thing I like about the Signal. It can be locked shut so there's no chance of opening. I like the tan color from Cabelas better than the shiny silver Wave too.
Is it any wonder that a Spyderco wins this contest? I'd choose either the PM2 or the Manix 2... For me it would have to be my Sebenza or Umnumzaan. When I consider one knife for the rest of my life, I have to think about availability of replacement parts, longevity of the company/model of knife, and things like spa services to keep the knife serviceable. In that domain, CRK is unrivaled.
It’s not original at all but I’d go with my PM2 in M390 steel. It’s a workhorse, easy to maintain....it’s just great :) Plus side is the blue on the scales.
The segment from 19:40 on, was the most entertaining portion of any of your reviews I have seen thus far. We could hear your anguish going back and forth between the final 3. I've never heard so many syllables uttered in such a short time span. Good stuff.

If I had to pick one it'd probably be the ZT 0562 -- I live a few miles from KAI, so I know it'd be maintained/taken care of, and it can do a lot of work while also being a slicer grind. Plus the deep-carry clip is great on it.
I have a 7 knife collection. If I had to pick one of them to keep for the rest of my life, it'd be my large Sebenza 21. Not just because it's high quality, but because of the excellent warranty.

I agree on the Slysz Bowie...but it would be my #2. Only cuz of legality. My #1 would be small plain jane Sebenza insingo. The warranty, craftsmanship, aesthetics, and size make it the perfect choice. I would be very comfortable having and using that knife everyday for the rest of my life.
It tore my heart out when you chose anything over the doppler sebenza, but then you tortured yourself for our entertainment in the elimination round, so I guess we’re even and all is forgiven.
Hey, Nick, have you tried the Cold Steel Code 4? It's indistructable, CTS-XHP and you can forget it's in your pocket(it's light and slim). It's a bit wide, but so is almost every Spyderco.
So, I will do the same thing with only knives I currently own. •Under $10 - my first knife I guess. Auto parts special, its trash but it's my only knife under $10 and has some sentimental value. Lol •Under $50 - Steel Will Intigue full size. I don't have a Rat 2 and my Rat 1 is just too heavy for everyday. •Under $100 - Kershaw Link M390. I don't have much in the bracket and I would prefer the M390 over the VG-10 on the Delica •Under $200 - ZT 0450, but if it were my only knife I would change the standoff color. •Under $300 - Custom Benchmade Mini Crook. Pleroma is close but as my only knife I would like the Benchmade warranty. •Under $400 - We Knives Eschaton. It's my only knife currently in the bracket. ● Overall - ZT 0450. Lightweight, small and the action is great with a good warranty. I would be happy to carry it everyday, but I would miss my knife drawer terribly. Lol
@@mickkeim4142, Yessir! ZT is Zero Tolerance. It's a sister company to Kershaw dealing with higher end pieces. Generally higher end materials and better fit and finish.
@@HikikomoriZone, Haha. Thanks. That's something I debated about for a bit. I hear they are good about getting you a replacement if it ends up a problem.
Mine is my bark river fox river 2. I got it for my birthday last year and it cuts better than anything else I own. I've carried it almost everyday since and the funny thing is I quit shopping for new knives! It does everything from kitchen prep to working in landscaping everyday.
So a titanium chaparell, pay a bit more and get the all the check boxes in a knife you can actually buy, even if it bumps out of budget bracket... not bad if its competing vs a knife double its cost.
As my collection has grown in number, sizes and prices, I continue to view the Chaparral Frn as an EDC masterpiece. I have custom knives I treasure but the Chappy is the EDC choice you can take anywhere, anytime and it operates easily and efficiently everytime. And it's easy to replace without too much trauma. Mind you the Mnandi is a stupendous knife but so much cash as to cause fear of losing.
I can’t choose a favorite in any price category! If I had to. Hose the best knife for the money and for ergonomics, it will always be the Spyderco Dragonfly. In MY opinion, it is the best ergo knife.
Color me shocked that the Nick Shabazz would choose the Slysz Bowie. My choices below. Under $50: Rat 2 d2 Under $100: Spyderco Stretch 2 Under $200: Spyderco Manix 2 marbled cf/4v Under $300: ZT 0562cf Over $300: tough choice but Shiro Hati on washers
Despite not carrying it much these days, I would have to go with a large clip point Cold Steel Voyager, even if price wasn't a factor. It's the knife that can do just about anything, and it's tough.
I'd have to say it would be my original DLC coated PM2. It has resharpened and beaten on many times so I'm not afraid to use it unlike some of my others.
The “If you could only keep ONE knife” question is loaded. Everybody has different opinion of what’s their favorite. Money isn’t a factor, you like what you like. If we all had the same favorite knife, there wouldn’t be much to talk about.
That's a KnivesShipFree exclusive brand, right? I always wanted to check out their Aurora and Bravo 1 knives but the Ultralite bushcrafter looks like you get a whole lot in a small package.
@@SeemsLogical No, DLT Trading has them as well. KSF is the way to go though. I live near the store, so I got to fondle the knives before I bought. I carry the brkt ulb as an edc in a KSF pocket sheath. I love it! It's also my backpacking and light bushcrafting knife.
I always liked the Mom & Pop feel to KSF. When I find a knife on both KSF and BladeHQ I always go with KSF. I have only bought from KSF twice so far, once for the Benchmade Mini-Griptilian in G10 and the other time for their Scagel medium bowie in Osage Orange. I get more use out of the Griptilian living in the suburbs, but the Medium bowie has seen some use when I was processing bamboo limbs for the garbage and some light batoning. If I ever go camping again I will probably bring the bowie as my belt knife and use it for the tasks my Khukuris are too big for.
The last 5 minutes, I literally felt the mental anguish. Lol I would have had the same last three, but the Bowie would have went first for weight, the neutron would have went second only because we don't know longevity of the company, which I hope is lasting, but the Chapparal would have been my choice for the fact that Spyderco has been around for a longgggg time, probably will be when I leave this world, which helps with warranty/parts and XHP has been easier to sharpen for my experience than 20cv. I feel like the chapparal is probably the most underrated folder out right now. The weight, the steel, the geometry and the price are home runs all the way around.
While I have the FRN Chaparral, if this was a 1 knife option, would likely move up to the CF Chaparral... Add a LC200N blade staying under $200 and have my personal choice wish list.
Ive owned hundreds of knives, custom, mid tech, all production companies in the book, but my all time favorite would probably be a Spyderco Sage 1. My other absolute favorites were my Emerson mini commanders, ZT 0550, Benchmade 943, and my Striden SnG CC
I'm gonna say, for one knife for life, a Shiro F3R in Vanax 37 steel: - Vanax has excellent edge retention and is all but rust-proof - should easily last a lifetime - Blade is long enough for pretty much anything you'd use a folding knife for, but still thin and slicey - Composite handles provide good grip, will withstand wear and damage fairly well, and can always be replaced by any component knife modder - Loose ball bearings give you the performance of bearings, but can be replaced relatively easily by buying aftermarket balls of the same diameter - If the titanium lockbar face starts to wear out, you can get a modder to weld some tungsten carbide onto it, giving it more life
For me, aside of course for irreplaceable sentimental hand-me-downs/gifts, it’d be my Benchmade Mini Bugout with Flytanium Classic brass scales, backspacer, and thumbstud and black Cerakote Lynch clip. It’s the biggest knife I can carry in my watchpocket, and is carried very nearly every day since nearly every day my Leatherman Free P4 rides in my main pocket. It’s far from my favorite (probably my Spyderco Para 3 in S110V, likewise Flytanium brass-ified), but since it’s an almost-EDC for me it’s effectively my favorite, haha! I intend to try a Spyderco Lil’ Native compression lock, since I VASTLY prefer US-made Spydercos to any other normal (not high-end, not auto, etc.) pocketknives as a general rule and I suspect it might also fit.
Nick, this was a fun topic to discuss and read through the comments. Thankfully most of us are able to have the luxury of having more than one knife. Under $30: SAK Under $50: ESEE Candiru or Izula Under $100: FRN Chaparral Under $150: Spyderco PM2 Under $200: Spyderco Military Above $200: Grimsmo Rask or Norsemen I would be fine with a PM2, it is a great knife, is fun to flick/fidget, and an be personalized with easily obtained accessories. Because I only get one knife in this senerio, I may want something nicer. The Grimsmo has been very impressive, I like the easy disassembly.
I haven't watched Nick in a good while so it was interesting to see the Sebenza show up in his hands again. I bet if he does this video again in a few years a Sebenza will still be on the table.
Nice choice! From my personal collection, i would choose the Spyderco Gayle Bradley 2. I have 2 of them, one being stock, and the other fully modified by Way of Knife (sharpening choil, acid sw blade, bead blasted liners, lockbar access, Lynchnw clip, and sharp dressed knives micarta scales. Its glorious.
I think for me it would have to be PM2. Lightweight, easy to carry, good build quality, very capable, can do pretty much anything you could ever need a pocket knife to do
Hey Nick! For me, these guys take the brackets: $0-$50- Ontario R2D2 (totally agree with you there Nick) $50-$100- Cold Steel Code 4 (Strong Light and Classy enough for most occasions) $100-$200- Massdrop Keen (Premium feel without sacrificing durability) or Cold Steel AD15 (its a beast, highly reccomend) $200-$300- Kizer Mjolnir (If you haven't handled one, do yourself a favor) $300+ - Custom Mjolnir from TK Knives (literally specced to be the only knife Ill ever need) Thanks for taking the time to do this Nick! Have a good One.
I’d be keeping my Large Sebenza 21 Insingo. The warranty plus being built like a tank while remaining slicey takes the cake for me. This is assuming of course that I am unable to replace it.
Yo. That’s why I sold my mini grip. I’m stoked to see someone else with the problem. Whenever I post something similar on forums/ other videos I get flamed and blamed for somehow breaking them.
Yea, I have a manix 2 and a para 2, but I’ve had the endura the longest as it was my first quality knife! As far as just flickabity, 940 takes the cake.
In my bugout the second spring failed shortly after the first. Imo The compressed spring length is too small relitive to the original, slightly fatiguing the spring every time it's used.
i can't price bracket as well as you can...I tend to buy between $80-$200, although i do plan on expanding my budget knives...I don't have the collection you have either but if i had to pick one for the rest of my life over $100 it would be my 940-2...under $100 i'm gonna pick the Kershaw Knockout "Manual Modified". If i could get my hands on a Brian Nadeau Sharp By Design Arch Nemesis...that would be my over $500...just because it's a knife of envy for me at this point. But at the end of the day....I carry my 940 or a rift just about every day regardless of what comes new in the mail. This week though i am carrying the Knockout...but i can't wait to get an Osborne of some sort back in my pocket. Thanks for the videos Nick...very enjoyable!
My Bugout with the titanium scales. Almost perfect size, slicey blade, good steel but easy to sharpen, flickable and still enough nice to look at. Going for a fixed blade, probably my Lionsteel M4 in m390.
This is my surprised face! In all seriousness, the only things that kept me from trying your ultimate favorite were the blade/handle size proportion (the handle just looks so blocky) and the fact that the lockbar obscures the opening hole to the point that I can't middle-finger-flick it.
I didn't know there are people collecting foldable knifes with so much passion. For 10 years I had a chineese knife which I bought for 4 dollars 20 cents in a small shop across the street. It was alright, I even opened metal cans with it a couple of times. But lately I forgot it in my backpack in the airport and it was confiscated. So I decided to buy something more fancy this time and watched some reviews on UA-cam. In the end I bought Spiderco Delica with ZDP-189 steel, it's a bit more expensive than 4 bucks, but it's lighter and the steel is better. Good enough for me to not look for replacement, although I don't think I'll be opening tuna cans with it...
Every time I have seen that Slysz in your videos, I have thought to myself... I think that might be my favorite syderco knife and I have never even held one. It just looks like a good quality piece and I love the design.
A $500 knife isn't for you. It's for knife guys who want something more and/or something a little different. My little number 2 Mora at $15 can do most of everything I need to do. But my Ed Martin Bush Custom at $330 just gives me a boner. Expensive knives are mostly for guys who have a bunch of production knives and just want something a little more
Youre not. Anything over $300 is more collectors items. A knife is a knife. They all serve the same purpose. Some are satisfied with a $20 knife while others are willing to purchase $500+. I personally would never spend over $500 for a knife. Alot of non custom knife that use the best materials could cost $175-$250. $300 is probably the limit id ever spend but id have to absolutely love the knife though
Xj18A a knife is a knife, if you are a freak, your opinion by default is subjective. In 150$ you can find dozens of knives that can do just as good as 500$+ ones. Also, you used “waste”, which actually sums it up lol.

•Under $50 - Steel Will Intigue full size. I don't have a Rat 2 and my Rat 1 is just too heavy for everyday.
•Under $100 - Kershaw Link M390. I don't have much in the bracket and I would prefer the M390 over the VG-10 on the Delica
•Under $200 - ZT 0450, but if it were my only knife I would change the standoff color.
Lol
Chris J , ZT? Is that the manufacturer?
@@mickkeim4142, Yessir! ZT is Zero Tolerance. It's a sister company to Kershaw dealing with higher end pieces. Generally higher end materials and better fit and finish.
Chris J Good list. I think the Kershaw Link is a good choice, aside from the assist spring having a limited lifespan.
Chris J, Thanks Chris...
How did I know you'd pick that. I anodized mine blue and gold while you were deciding and it's beautiful now for the rest of my life Nick!!!
You must have really small hands if you find the ergos of dragonfly to be the best.
I'm amazed the Chaparral lasted as long as it did.
Yeah..... didn't see that coming.
The real question then becomes: if you where forced to pay what these cost today (including the ridiculous price of the bowie), what would you pick?
Color me shocked that the Nick Shabazz would choose the Slysz Bowie. My choices below.
Under $50: Rat 2 d2
Under $100: Spyderco Stretch 2
Under $200: Spyderco Manix 2 marbled cf/4v
Under $300: ZT 0562cf
Over $300: tough choice but Shiro Hati on washers
Despite not carrying it much these days, I would have to go with a large clip point Cold Steel Voyager, even if price wasn't a factor. It's the knife that can do just about anything, and it's tough.
I'd have to say it would be my original DLC coated PM2. It has resharpened and beaten on many times so I'm not afraid to use it unlike some of my others.
I’d probably go with my Carbon Fiber Chaparral, personally. Such a great tool, but still gets some of that niceness appeal
I was already a subscriber but "go back to talk radio" just made you my freaking favorite!!!!!!!!!!
You pronounced Smaug correctly the first time (according to Tolkien at least).
The “If you could only keep ONE knife” question is loaded. Everybody has different opinion of what’s their favorite. Money isn’t a factor, you like what you like. If we all had the same favorite knife, there wouldn’t be much to talk about.
I love this channel
this is the 4th time ive watched this video and its still great.
Hallelujah! No freaking flippers!!!!
I would keep my Bark River ultralight bushcrafter. It does everything I need a knife to do better than any other knives I own.
I don't have that one(YET) but my choice would be my aurora in cpm 3v
The last 5 minutes, I literally felt the mental anguish. Lol
I would have had the same last three, but the Bowie would have went first for weight, the neutron would have went second only because we don't know longevity of the company, which I hope is lasting, but the Chapparal would have been my choice for the fact that Spyderco has been around for a longgggg time, probably will be when I leave this world, which helps with warranty/parts and XHP has been easier to sharpen for my experience than 20cv.
We need a updated 2023 version of this video
Great video. I love it. That spyderco chapparal is speaking to me. I like the working look of it. Subscribed. Thank you!
Paramilitary 2 in s35vn could be my only knife without issue.
i didnt know they sold them in s35!
Yes I totally agree Raul 👍
Honestly S30 is sufficient for me. I actually find it keeps its edge longer.
@@jesseespinosa9739
Yeah but it's weak AF, so brittle like glass. I have the Manix 2 & it chips/rolls so easily.
Ive owned hundreds of knives, custom, mid tech, all production companies in the book, but my all time favorite would probably be a Spyderco Sage 1. My other absolute favorites were my Emerson mini commanders, ZT 0550, Benchmade 943, and my Striden SnG CC
It's like watching someone choose their favorite child
Spyderco C211TIP Spidie Chef. The rest of my life. Just perfect.
Good info. It's wonderful we would never really have to pick just one.
I'm gonna say, for one knife for life, a Shiro F3R in Vanax 37 steel:
- Vanax has excellent edge retention and is all but rust-proof - should easily last a lifetime
- Blade is long enough for pretty much anything you'd use a folding knife for, but still thin and slicey
- Composite handles provide good grip, will withstand wear and damage fairly well, and can always be replaced by any component knife modder
- Loose ball bearings give you the performance of bearings, but can be replaced relatively easily by buying aftermarket balls of the same diameter
- If the titanium lockbar face starts to wear out, you can get a modder to weld some tungsten carbide onto it, giving it more life
For me, aside of course for irreplaceable sentimental hand-me-downs/gifts, it’d be my Benchmade Mini Bugout with Flytanium Classic brass scales, backspacer, and thumbstud and black Cerakote Lynch clip.
Under $30: SAK
Under $50: ESEE Candiru or Izula
Under $100: FRN Chaparral
Under $150: Spyderco PM2
Under $200: Spyderco Military
Above $200: Grimsmo Rask or Norsemen
I would be fine with a PM2, it is a great knife, is fun to flick/fidget, and an be personalized with easily obtained accessories.
Yep.
So many liner locks and frame locks. My thumb is quaking
I think for me it would have to be PM2. Lightweight, easy to carry, good build quality, very capable, can do pretty much anything you could ever need a pocket knife to do
Out of my 4 knives, its the ZT 450 Sinkevich.
I love that knife and own it but hate that it's a frame lock.....
Only just starting watching the video, but would be S35vn Para 2 for me, every time.
100%
Thanks for the shout out! I was feeling guilty every time you mentioned a knife I have on loan. Sorry everyone!
Hey Nick! For me, these guys take the brackets:
$0-$50- Ontario R2D2 (totally agree with you there Nick)
$50-$100- Cold Steel Code 4 (Strong Light and Classy enough for most occasions)
$100-$200- Massdrop Keen (Premium feel without sacrificing durability) or Cold Steel AD15 (its a beast, highly reccomend)
$200-$300- Kizer Mjolnir (If you haven't handled one, do yourself a favor)
$300+ - Custom Mjolnir from TK Knives (literally specced to be the only knife Ill ever need)
Thanks for taking the time to do this Nick!
Have a good One.
I’d be keeping my Large Sebenza 21 Insingo. The warranty plus being built like a tank while remaining slicey takes the cake for me. This is assuming of course that I am unable to replace it.
It would be my spyderco endura 4. I have my 940 but I’ve broken like 5 springs over the past 2 years.
They really have to switch to regular coil springs...
Same here. Don't have many knives to chose from though. A para 2 s35 or a manix 2 bearing would probably take it's place though.
I really wish there was a Nick Shabazz gun channel!
Nick, I'm lucky to live in a state where I can carry anything I want, up to a certain length, I love your choice!
May sound classless to knife snobs but the Cold Steel extra Large Voyager drop point
i can't price bracket as well as you can...I tend to buy between $80-$200, although i do plan on expanding my budget knives...I don't have the collection you have either but if i had to pick one for the rest of my life over $100 it would be my 940-2...under $100 i'm gonna pick the Kershaw Knockout "Manual Modified".
In California you can carry any size blade as a folder. Size restrictions are on fixed blade....
If i could only keep one, it would be my Victorinox Huntsman.
Having those final three it would be a hard decision to make. Love that Neutron though...
Highlander: There can be only one!
Beside the Holt Specter, no flippers or bearings! I approve Nick!!
"At 500 bucks the world opens up". Excuse me no. Am i the only one who cant justify paying 500 or more for a knife???
A $500 knife isn't for you. It's for knife guys who want something more and/or something a little different. My little number 2 Mora at $15 can do most of everything I need to do. But my Ed Martin Bush Custom at $330 just gives me a boner. Expensive knives are mostly for guys who have a bunch of production knives and just want something a little more
No, you are most certainly the only one who couldn't justify paying that kind of money on a knife, especially a flick knife like spyderco.
Because you dont have $500 to waste on a knife. Simple enough.
Xj18A a knife is a knife, if you are a freak, your opinion by default is subjective. In 150$ you can find dozens of knives that can do just as good as 500$+ ones. Also, you used “waste”, which actually sums it up lol.
