Absolutely agree with so much of this. Absolutely disagree about the shoes. As a runner, your legs are your currency. Your feet, they’re like the change. Look after the pennies, the pounds look after themselves. I rack up around 160 miles a month, and spend about 75 quid on shoes (same pair every time) that last around 400 miles before I start to feel the difference that they’re wearing through. It means I need new shoes every 3 months, but that’s way better than getting injured and having to not run for months.
It's quite painful looking back on that line in particular, totally agree with you these days. I can only plead naivety from being a bit younger, I'm afraid

Be the change you want to see, I personally sprint towards the shelf stockers at a steady 15mph making direct eye contact but whenever I do they always run, guess they don't get paid by the hour
I used to run a 5k every morning and evening when I was in the military - now I'm disabled so it's basically impossible for me to run anymore, but I've been walking on a treadmill every morning and just the walking has made me feel so much better - and I even get "runner's high" sometimes :)
Are you disabled as in you are incapable of running but fully capable of walking in a regular manner before you "sustained" this disablity? Just curious, you don't have to answer though
I started jogging daily with poor 1,2km covered, felt horribly, but yesterday on day 21 I already ran 5,5km which is just sort of a miracle for such unsporty person like me, so don't give up too soon, you can adapt in like two weeks and after that jogging does become an addiction. For me being a musician myself, jogging is the only bit of time when i'm not in my headphones and i'm left alone with my mind, my body and the sounds of the world outside and it's just marvelous. So give it a shot, you never know until you do :в
abbs - the "high" comes at the very end of extreme exertion, like from a series of sprints. I was a medium distance runner most of my life & never got the hi; but back 43 years ago at the end of a sprint session on a football field - I had the most sublime experience, like floating in the air like a bird. I'm too old to chase the endorphins now, but I had that experience & that's enough! 🏃
@@paulryan2128 interesting to know. I've run on and off for around 9 months and never experienced a "high". Feeling more positive and productive sure, but nothing that's be explained as a high.
I don't always get runners high but when I do it's like stars and candy. One time I got a runners high so intense I just started laughing my ass off randomly in the middle of the road.

Saw this video 5 years ago and started running because of it. Still do it because it's so much fun. Thanks for all the great content throughout the years
I'm finding that exercise is really stigmatized with all the "get shredded in 10 days!" type stuff. After starting to work out, I'm realizing it's mainly a mental thing. It's something you don't hear about as much.
Vacuum your stomach in, like when you're trying to look thinner. This will feel awkward, but it will immediately start becoming automatic. It stops any and all stabbing pain.
This might've been the most important video I've ever watched. I decided to try running after watching this video. My mom signed me up for track after seeing me run (I guess she ran track or something in highschool) and though I was initially against it, I tried it and here I am several years later. I've ran 2 years of track and am now starting my 2nd year of cross country, and I just saw this video pop up in my recommended again, and just wanted to thank Exurb1a for introducing me to running.
This video canged my life. (story) i wached this video a year ago, but it never left my head. Jumping back to today, i had my first 5km run, i ran to a pond near my sisters house. First i made some coffe, ate some sandwiches and, was bored, really bored. My phone was out pof battery. So i went outside. I was kind of sad abaut my life. I stomped on bird-poo so i didnt want to wear shoes, so i told my brother i will go swimming. I said to myself to not stop running. I ran on some rocky floor and cut myself a few times, but didnt stop. When i finally got to the pond, my heart was beating and i felt like a boss. I have never felt so proud in my life. As i was swimming i truly felt happy, the consept of time disapeard, i only felt joy swimming. While i was in the water fish started biting my shaking feet. It was tickeling. My feet were shaking, but i ran back, i wanted to feel proud agin and i sure did. I ran back, it was the best feeling. When i got home i took a cold shower. I felt like a man. 5km for my 4th day as a 14yr old is a big acomplishment for me. Thanks for making this video.
this video inspired me to start running for something other than the middle school pacer test. i have been running for the last 4 years, and i’m 16 years old. i’m going to run in the chicago marathon next time they have it. i never knew how much a simple hobby could change my life. it helps with stress, anxiety, and lets me think about everything for 30 minutes to an hour. you were right, it’s definitely a drug. thank you so much for this video, as it genuinely changed my life. edit: for other runners curious, my times are: 5k- 22 minutes 10k- 51 minutes 15k- 1:30:37 pretty decent id say
Usually intelectual youtubers like this guy are mega pessimist and depressed finally someone who puts his life together and is also a good thinker Thats some role model material for me chief
we all carry the burden of existence, some of us are just more aware than others(pessimistic/depressed vibe but its not that, its just the feeling of being lost i guess), like exurb1a, and he kinda channels his pain into the art of these youtube videos. great to see!
Agus Puig making fun of people who are depressed. Nice. If someone you know gets depressed pls simply go to them and say: „ hey get your life together“ You will see how this turns out
@@waalterisso9778 no man you misunderstood what i wanted to say, ive gone trough depression and ive helped people trough depression i dont think its funny, what i wanted to convey is that alot of inteligent people are overwhelmed by the world kind of an oposite of the usual "ignorance is bliss" they understand the world so much includijg the bad sides of it that they end up being kind of nihilists that just stop caring about anything, or the weight of the knowledge makes them depressed so they are always low energy, thats why im happy to see someone like exurb1a someone who seems smart and probablyknows how fucked up the world can be yet he chooses to exercice and look at life with optimism, i wasntm akikg fun of anything i was just saying that being so smart and stilll having the strenght and determination to be in shape is something you dont find everyday and i found that inspiring
@@Kismonos03 yeah its great to see someone smart enough to understand the world to a point where he probably carries a bigger burden than most people but he still finds time to be in shape wich shows he isnt just being the usual smart but pessimistic type but someone who despite their avobe avarage knowledge still has optimism
***** Thank you! I can't act and modeling doesn't really interest me but I like making short films and editing and all that. I might start posting some stuff here on youtube
I've watched this video for the first time like 6 years ago, it helped me to finally get into shape, in the meanwhile I've learned more about excercise and about myself. I had periods where I couldn't run and felt like shit, found other stuff to do, recently I've finally been able to get back into running and I just wanna thank you for flipping a switch in my mind 6 years ago. If it wasn't for running and in turn you, I'd probably still be overweight. Oh and for ppl reading this, shoes are worth spending some more money on, starting on cheaper ones isn't a bad idea but if you find yourself liking running, get some aesic gells, they're the best.
Exurb1a thanks so much for this video, I’ve always been looking for more in my life because I have depression and anxiety and this gave me a new happiness. I’ve just begun running and I love it already, thank you so much for introducing running to me
I remember seeing this for the first time several years ago, and it motivated me to immediately go outside and run. Fast forward to today and I'm a x-c runner and have been for 3 years. I've qualified for sectionals twice but didn't go state. That's fine. There's next year. This video helped start my love for running and it's what I do for fun. But now I've come to a fork in my life and I must make a pretty big decision (at least a big decision for a 17yro). I must choose to either spend senior year with my closest friends, or become a foreign exchange student in Germany and go with the girl I like. I've never had to make this big a decision before, and I'm scared. I didn't know how I was going to choose, but you've helped remind me that there's a way. Running. I'm going for a long run. I justed wanted to thank you for reminding and motivating me again years later.
7months ago i left a comment, saying i went for a run. till this day i run every weekend bevause of it. thanks exurb2a for making me healthy, happier and more self confident
I watched this video quite a few years ago and it got me into running and thanks to your emphasis on music it also got me into listening to more music, especially albums. I don't run as much anymore because I don't have the time, but I have since listened to hundreds of albums which has definitely improved my life for the better. Every now and then I think about this video and how much my life would have been different if I hadn't spent 5 minutes of my life watching it years ago. Thanks exurbia!
I just want to say thank you. You were one of my biggest inspirations to start running a couple years ago. Though it has been hard to stay consistent, sometimes I come back and watch this video and it gives me inspiration again. I'll be running my first half-marathon in a couple weeks!
Instead of music, when I run, I listen to long podcasts. Instead of short bursts of indeterminable running-to, it's like having someone talk you through the run
Bridget Hildebrand how do your brain focuses on podcasts when running when i run at the start of 10 mins is tiring but a few more minutes later i will be in the zone and i shut my eyes and *START RUNNING FASTER AND LONGER* that is why im able to finish a full marathon in 2 and a halfish hour not the best time but i guess i was at the top 100 in my marathon
Glonic so your saying that you cant run 5km in abt 20 mins?? My school best marathon runner can finish a 5km run in less than 15 mins his stamina is also better than me
I just discovered your mind-blowingly awesome videos a couple of days ago. I can't stop watching them, they just keep getting better and better. I feel like they speak to me in a very direct way, touching on topics that are swimming in my noodle all the time. It's comforting to hear someone else say the same things I think about and you sir, wield language like the words are folded steel and you are a samurai warrior. I just walked into my flat after an early morning run and thought I'd watch one quick short one before breakfast (I already sound like an addict negotiating with myself about my next fix) I click on the video youtube has recommended and it's a spot-on explanation of why I go running and I listen to much of the music you mention as well. Anyway, thank you for the thought-provoking content. Cheers! - the only addison
Same story, I was 18 and sedentary going into college, and 170 pounds and skinny fat at 6'. But I did a couch to 5k. I'm now about 6 months in, and running a 5k every day. I have cheekbones now, a jawline, and at 154lbs finally toned. My head works better, and despite the time commitment, I feel happier and I do better in school. 10/10 recommended
Haha, I'm 18 about the same weight, slightly shorter, and am doing couch right now xD you make me feel motivated. I just need to find a good and easy place to run and I'll hopefully start doing it regularly :D
I honestly don't know how I stumbled across this channel. However, over the past few days I have been listening on my headphones while working on the truck. I've been rather enterained and impressed. Fast forward, truck is done and I decided to go for a much needed run to clear my head. I open UA-cam and this is the first video I see. Funny thing right? Anyway, another great video. I hope anyone who sees this has an amazing day! Be kind to yourselves and to one another. Much love my friends!
I spent my whole afternoon procrastinating, wondering if I should go for a run or not, until this randomly came up. I just came bk from my run and i feel great. Cheers mate and thanks for the inspiration!
ZXC harlie I have asthma too-do it more often (start with smaller than normal distances) and it gets better. I started in 5th grade and haven’t been hospitalized for asthma since (after being overweight and hospitalized twice). If it’s really bad, make sure you have your inhaler.
Don't beat yourself because of it! Me and my brother run around 5-7k and he has asthma, but we started running 6 years ago so he's gotten used to it. No matter when, what or where we go to run he always takes a few puffs and he is good to go!
I love this video. I especially appreciate the music advice. Choosing the right music that motivates me to move and also has a great steady running rhythm can (remarkably easily might I add) be the difference between a mediocre run to a great run on fire for me.
its been 4 years ever since i saw this video and find myself coming back to this whenever i get derailed from life stuff and start running again thanks exurb1a u da man, this video and haruki murakami's book about running inspired me to start
Dunno, I had the same experience. About a year ago I ran every other day, getting a little further each time. After about a month, I could run for an hour. It was boring as fuck. ¯\(°_o)/¯
Running with music in the woods. How can it be so boring? It's the best time to think about stuff. Maybe you aren't doing anything serious in life lol.
Matthew Greer Those thoughts are like a wall. Everyday you run you are slowly climbing over the wall, and the harder and more consistently you run the faster you can get over the wall. Once you have finally gotten over that wall running will start to be fun and you will feel good.
Thank you I'm not a runner, but I couldn't bring myself to do exercise lately because of emotional stress, this helped a lot to remember the feeling after the fear of starting paralysis and got me motivated.
@@Niphredyl Wow it's crazy I left that comment a year ago. Just yesterday I ran a 21 minute 5k, a year ago I was 60lbs heavier running 50 minute 5ks. The only reason I run is because I don't entirely enjoy running while running, but I crave running when I'm not. I love the improvement that comes along with it. It's just great to feel better because of the added health benefits. I'm obviously not any kind of speed demon but pushing my limits is great to experience. If you don't like running, don't run. At the end of the day do what makes you happy. Try other activities such as biking or swimming maybe.

Good on you, man! That is great that it works for you. As for me, I hate running. It does nothing for me. When I was in the military I had to run all the time. I haven’t done it since I got out 23 years ago and don’t miss it at all. Thanks for listening. Love your channel!
This vid inspired me to pick up running during lockdown, I'm now on my 120th day running in a row, and it's helped me greatly, finding my inner grit and love for running and life in general. Thank you.
It's definitely built into our genetics to run. I mean look at us. We're half legs. I genuinely think it is likely that proper exercise is not only important to "keep fit", but is actually crucial for proper development of the brain. Kids have this natural tendency to want to run around like mad whenever they get the chance. They're not being "hyper", they're being human. Yet slowly over time we drill it into them that they need to "sit still", "stop running" and "behave". By the time most people are adults they've had the desire to run well and truly knocked out of them. Then we wonder why there is an obesity problem. I my opinion, the very first thing primary school kids should do when they show up in the morning is whatever they want for the first 2 hours. Let them run around like mad in the play ground from 9 until 11. Let them get it all out of their system. After that, they'd probably me more likely to sit down and pay attention in class, rather than constantly wanting to know when break is so they can.. you know... run around.
Children are natural runners and they do just run. They have to be told to stop running. I'm not suggesting that the first thing kids should do in the morning is go for a 5 mile run. I'm suggesting that kids should have 2 hours of free time in the playground where most of them do run around. Proper conditioning is necessary to be able to pull off long distance running. However, most adults are exhausted by running for even 30 seconds. That is partly due to an increasing amount of inactivity as we move towards adulthood. We spend more and more time sitting.
Just thoughts really We are built for running. It's a basic mode of movement. If someone can't run slowly but constantly for at least 30minutes, our society has a problem. Everyone should have that kind of stamina, as it is necessary for survival in emergency situations. (Although it might not be enough)
First time I'm completely committed to doing something from just being told on the internet especially I watched through a couple of your videos and I'm completely hooked. Taking advice from you is the least I can do I wish to be able to meet you one day, you're a great inspiration. Wishing you all the best bro, keep up with the UA-cam grind, you're great!
I'm back here after six years to watch this video again and share with you I'm a runner now. This video is what did it. Just start running, don't get caught up in looking for the right shoes and delay running. Just run. But definitely sort the shoes out at some point.
Every word you said about running is exactly how I feel about it. I started doing it because of the constant anxiety and panic attacks I was getting. Turned into an addiction. I run almost every day, and if I go more than a day or two off from it I am extremely bothered by it (and my mood reflects it). Funny how it becomes like a drug withdrawal in that effect. Anyway, great video!
Once you've been running for like 10 minutes you suddenly don't care about what other people think of you, because you realize that they don't actually care! When you see someone running do you pay them any mind? Probably not, maybe if they're quite attractive. And if they're overweight, I just feel like silently cheering them on as they're trying to do something about it. Win-win.
This video changed my life. Ever since 6 or 7 years ago when this video was first published I started running, and I started growing, and changing my life for the better. Thank you exurb1a
The best thing to do is just stop and give a firm NO. Most dogs aren't trying to attack you; they just get excited by fast-moving things. And even if they are trying to attack you, pretty much any dog is going to be able to outrun a human so continuing to run won't help either. BONUS: if you stay still long enough for the owner to catch up and leash them, you can give them judgey looks and/or comments thus ruining their walk (revenge!) As a person whose dog chases runners, sorry man. He really isn't trying to fuck you up, he just likes running and is excited that you like running too and kind of annoyed that I don't like running. I think he's trying to tell me something. Anyway, he's getting better but terriers are stubborn. Some breeds have a strong chasing instinct (and some owners have a strong stupidity instinct and let their chasey dogs off lead in busy areas).
Aw well, yeah I guess that's a concern. There aren't really a whole lot of stray dogs where I live, so I hadn't thought of that. Depends on your location, I suppose.
I'd love to run, but there's this fun thing called snow. it makes life hell, and is the equivalent of the sky shitting on you. And then having to walk in it for days or months.
I tried to run and my hands went numb from the cold.... probably should've started running in the spring instead of November.(it's 30 farienheit Michigan)
Tank2174 I also started in November but in slightly warmer New Jersey. Still not fun, but I haven’t noticed my hands getting cold, probably because I’m so focused on my throat feeling like it’s turning to ice and my legs feeling like they’re on fire.
I always have my heads full of things but instead of making it clear running suppress any thoughts I have, like if I was meditating. I just see the world around me and hear my breath without processing it or analysing it. I just feel without thinking at all, and although it doesn't help me overcome my problems it is pretty refreshing and enjoyable.
Absolutely agree with so much of this. Absolutely disagree about the shoes.

i don’t get runners high, so i stopped running. i told my dad and he was like ‘oh me neither’ he runs marathons quite often. he is also crazy
Out of curiosity did you replace it with another form of exercise?
abbs - the "high" comes at the very end of extreme exertion, like from a series of sprints.
Hey, I run cross country and rarely have experienced runners high. In reality it’s not all that common.
I don't always get runners high but when I do it's like stars and candy. One time I got a runners high so intense I just started laughing my ass off randomly in the middle of the road.

That one guy who liked my comment you are a legend, you just made my day:)

Giant it better to go every second day so you dont get injured and also ice heard you can actually get fitter by doing that
I am now extremely motivated to start running
Léon Ruhe
Well have you?
It's been a year. How fit are you now?
Download a running trainer app, don't do it without any knowledge of your limits.
.
Just thoughts really We are built for running. It's a basic mode of movement. If someone can't run slowly but constantly for at least 30minutes, our society has a problem. Everyone should have that kind of stamina, as it is necessary for survival in emergency situations. (Although it might not be enough)

I'm back here after six years to watch this video again and share with you I'm a runner now. This video is what did it. Just start running, don't get caught up in looking for the right shoes and delay running. Just run. But definitely sort the shoes out at some point.
Thanks, Exurb1a. I ran my first half marathon two days ago thanks to this video. Stay cool, mate.
Mike this video motivated you to start training for a half marathon and 2 days later you ran a half marathon? X to doubt
@@putturin4723 excuse me? Video posted 2+ years ago. Comment is 7 months old--->he started 2 years ago and ~1.5 years later he ran the marathon.
Putturin ur brain cells are panicking
Humans have an evolutionary history of running -- hunting stuff, fleeing from stuff. We are meant to run sometimes.
I actually started running recently, and right after a run I remembered this video. Thanks man, this is good advice.
I would if it didn't require being seen by people in public. lol.
Ba Zinga go to a forest or park.
Do it at night
Once you've been running for like 10 minutes you suddenly don't care about what other people think of you, because you realize that they don't actually care! When you see someone running do you pay them any mind? Probably not, maybe if they're quite attractive. And if they're overweight, I just feel like silently cheering them on as they're trying to do something about it. Win-win.
dannieboy824 that might not work with people that have social anxiety
I have nowhere to run
me: scrolls
UA-cam: Stop staring at this screen and start running
Thinking of listening to this while running
That talk is surely a motivation
You literally said everything I would have, especially the part about running being great for introverts and meditation. Great video.
this video: running is basically like a drug
me: ok im finally convinced
This made me start running.
Thanks
Remember to use your toes
still running?
Are you still running?
running still?
and why do yall' care? Isn't it obvious? Literally if he is a month or two in he will run until his 70's lol.
I love how much work goes into these high quality visuals.
Love the video, true motivation!
As long as you dont get one of those t-shirts that declares "I RUN"
Next video : why I eat
why i breathe
This video changed my life. Ever since 6 or 7 years ago when this video was first published I started running, and I started growing, and changing my life for the better. Thank you exurb1a
Changed my life. Thank you.
I want to run at outside but fuckin dogs always chase me or attack me
LPT Don't run through dog park XD
The best thing to do is just stop and give a firm NO. Most dogs aren't trying to attack you; they just get excited by fast-moving things. And even if they are trying to attack you, pretty much any dog is going to be able to outrun a human so continuing to run won't help either.
BONUS: if you stay still long enough for the owner to catch up and leash them, you can give them judgey looks and/or comments thus ruining their walk (revenge!)
As a person whose dog chases runners, sorry man.
It's okay when dogs have owners, but what about stray dogs?
Aw well, yeah I guess that's a concern. There aren't really a whole lot of stray dogs where I live, so I hadn't thought of that. Depends on your location, I suppose.
+Hope McFadden bear spray
I'd love to run, but there's this fun thing called snow. it makes life hell, and is the equivalent of the sky shitting on you. And then having to walk in it for days or months.
it enhances the training effect
I tried to run and my hands went numb from the cold.... probably should've started running in the spring instead of November.(it's 30 farienheit Michigan)
In Celsius it's -1.1111
Tank2174 I also started in November but in slightly warmer New Jersey. Still not fun, but I haven’t noticed my hands getting cold, probably because I’m so focused on my throat feeling like it’s turning to ice and my legs feeling like they’re on fire.
If you live in an area with enough snow try alpine or xc skiing, I got into it and love it.
Love the choice of playlist!
