They gave me the lined paper, I wrote the other way, they gave me a 0. Now my parents are kicking me out of the house for failing all my finals and APs and they refuse to hear my "But philosophy turtle told me so" argument. Please advise
If you're tempted to be "immortalized"; remembered by strangers for something you did, let me quell that desire for you with this simple statement. I sincerely appreciate my grandparents who are now gone and remember them fondly, while I can only know Isaac Newton as a name and a handful of factual accomplishments. Strangers will never remember you for you, just your name and what you did. The valuable stuff, the character and impression you leave on others, will eventually fade as they also do. For that sake, if you DO manage to accomplish anything significant, be sure to change your name by deed poll to something utterly ridiculous, so that future schoolkids will get a laugh out of it.
@Try Not To Avoid Nope. And neither will I. If we achieve anything spectacular, only our names and achievements will be remembered, but we as individuals will be forgotten. That's entirely my point.
But it is a good thing people want to be remembered like that..that is how remarkable people come into existence..well most of them are by accidents..but there are cases of this too..and its cos of these remarkable people we as a species are so far ahead in science, literature and so on...its a good thing dont make it sound bad...nothing wrong with striving for immortality..instead encourage people
@@guyontheinternet6034 I think that those remarkable people who achieved the greatest things worth remembering from their lifetimes appear to have been motivated by innate curiosity and a drive of values. The desire to be remembered is not the right motivation to produce good outcomes because it is a selfish one. The desire to see technology improved, to investigate and explore the unknown, and to help others is often what leads to a worthwhile remembrance in the long term; and yes, so much of it all by accident. Instead of striving for our own immortalities, we should be striving for these things instead.
I know this video is old, but for anyone wondering about the song/music/piece during the korelev section, it is “hym to Moscow” by Alexander l’estrange. Anyone who sees pass it on
I think it’s also important to remember that we don’t need to do something “remarkable”. At least not in the sense of being in the history books or inventing some life changing technology. Remarkable isn’t just Charles Darwin or Albert Einstein. It’s the teacher who’s presence was a students safe place when their home wasn’t. The parent who works two jobs so they can provide for their kids and give them happy childhoods. The lady next door who brightens her neighbors day every time she brings them some vegetables from her garden. The friend who’s always been there to lend you their support and make you laugh until your stomach hurts. Think of all the people who are remarkable to you, who have made a difference in your life. Odds are the world won’t know their name. But why should that make their lives any less meaningful? Your life doesn’t have to be extravagant to be meaningful. We bring meaning to our lives, and to the lives of the people around us. We are just a tiny, microscopic speck in the massive, beautiful universe we were miraculously brought to life in. Live your life with meaning, whatever that may be.
A quote has more gravity if it comes from some acknowledged person, right? Wrong! Personally, have no respect to someone who was constantly in debt, had gambling issues and practically lived a life more sinful, than most of us.
"Savor the fruit of life, my young friends. It has a sweet taste when it is fresh from the vine, but don't live too long. The taste turns bitter ... after a time."
if one is cautious about persueing an unusual path it may help to rembember that the synics will be forgotten just as readily as your faliures will be too. what a remarkable reminder, thanks.
I just turned 18 today, I'm very ambitious but was feeling very uncertain. This video came at the perfect moment. I'm logging off of UA-cam and I'm gonna go do something.
Yes me too, I just finished beating my meat after watching this video and instead of feeling ashamed with myself I’m feeling fucking great. Truly an eye opening experience.
Nah g you gotta survive the viking test. It goes like this. Step 1: drop your baby on their head. Step 2: If they're a viking they get up and scream a war cry, if not try for another kid. My dad did this with me. My Swedish roots really shined. :)
Hey Exurb1A, I stumbled across this video maybe 5 years ago and I’ve probably watched it a hundred times. It’s inspired me to achieve all kinds of remarkable things and it’s always my go-to when I am doubting myself. Thanks for making the video and hope you are doing great!
"Act without expectation, make cool stuff just because.", made a great combo when combined with "In order to shit fire, one must first chew glass." Seriously, you're the best dude keep it up!
You inspired me to go into science but its really really really hard like people who burn out during STEM majors you have no idea how hard it is in a top tier lab :(
as a german, youtube translated the Title for to to "you will never do something out of the ordinary" that hit even deeper, since i expeded stuff like: Everthing we do and think of as out of the ordinary is sort of a theme park ride. Bunjeejumping, skydiving whatever, all of those things you can by from supplieres who do nothing but giving that expirience to people who then go on thinking they did something huge. but fuck of, its is, now turn of your computer and do something. And if that something just makes you remeber the day for a few months, it was worth it.
During my life, I've learned that there is only one thing that really matters. You might regret doing something, but you will even moreso regret *_not_* doing something.
I sometimes think about suicide. I'm not depressed at all, I actually have by far the best time of my life right now and I'm generally happy, but at the same time I believe it doesn't matter that much. I could be dead and I wouldn't miss anything, because it's impossible to miss anything when you're dead. What contributes to this mindset is that I'm actually not afraid of death unlike majority of people. Sometimes I think it's better if my molecules bound to other living cells like plants, fungi, insects and animals, because I don't believe that I'm more special than plants etc. Living is good for yourself and a few other people, but death is better for a lot more other lives. But I'm relatively sure that I won't kill myself, not because I will regret it, since regret is impossible when you're dead, but because I regret right now that I want to loose the chance of raising a family and maybe getting famous for something that helps our future generations. But I'm not more special than my cat at the end of the day.
There's a lot of important things being said in this video, and I strongly feel that the phrase "she took a piratical sabbatical" is right up there amongst them. The reference to "illegitimi non carborundum" in the description also makes me feel that I'm in exactly the right place here. Great video, great channel, thank you for your work.

What is quite remarkable is that you persist in your ways. A random onlooker might even see meaning in them. Not all is lost and not all things that appear useless, are. I bid you a good day!
@@HowRandomIsRandom ~ The Useless Tree ~ Hui Tzu said to Chuang, “I have a big tree, the kind they call a “stinktree.” The trunk is so distorted, so full of knots, no one can get a straight plank out of it. The branches are so crooked you cannot cut them up in any way that makes sense.” “There it stands beside the road. No carpenter will even look at it. Such is your teaching - big and useless.” Chuang Tzu replied, “Have you ever watched the wildcat crouching, watching his prey. The prey leaps this way, and that way, high and low, and at last lands in the trap. And have you seen the Yak? Great as a thundercloud, he stands in his might. Big? Sure, but he can’t catch mice!” “So for your big tree, no use? Then plant it in the wasteland, in emptiness. Walk idly around it, rest under its shadow. No axe or bill prepares its end. No one will ever cut it down.” “Useless? You should worry!” A useless tree -- to the farmer, to the woodworker and bowman -- has the time to grow old and wise and so becomes the most useful of all, in time, as its greatness attracts wildlife, his big roots support an ecosystem and travelers can rest in its shade. Uselessness is only ephemeral and subject to perception. And approaching life in a utilitarian way (I am good because I am useful) uses you up. Find not only usefulness, or "being remarkable" as it is said in this motivational video, but try to be wholesome.

*So long, Gay Bowser*
Shit. I agree

Remarkable isn’t just
Charles Darwin or Albert Einstein. Live your life with meaning, whatever that may be.

as a german, youtube translated the Title for to to "you will never do something out of the ordinary" that hit even deeper, since i expeded stuff like: Everthing we do and think of as out of the ordinary is sort of a theme park ride.
Gonna regret either way. The issue is that my life sucks. Thats it.

~ The Useless Tree ~
Hui Tzu said to Chuang, “I have a big tree, the kind they call a “stinktree.” The trunk is so distorted, so full of knots, no one can get a straight plank out of it. The branches are so crooked you cannot cut them up in any way that makes sense.”
“There it stands beside the road. No carpenter will even look at it. Such is your teaching - big and useless.”
Chuang Tzu replied, “Have you ever watched the wildcat crouching, watching his prey. The prey leaps this way, and that way, high and low, and at last lands in the trap. And have you seen the Yak? Great as a thundercloud, he stands in his might. Big? Sure, but he can’t catch mice!”
“So for your big tree, no use? Then plant it in the wasteland, in emptiness. Walk idly around it, rest under its shadow. No axe or bill prepares its end. No one will ever cut it down.”
“Useless? You should worry!”
A useless tree -- to the farmer, to the woodworker and bowman -- has the time to grow old and wise and so becomes the most useful of all, in time, as its greatness attracts wildlife, his big roots support an ecosystem and travelers can rest in its shade. Uselessness is only ephemeral and subject to perception. And approaching life in a utilitarian way (I am good because I am useful) uses you up. Find not only usefulness, or "being remarkable" as it is said in this motivational video, but try to be wholesome.
"You will never do anything remarkable"
