You missed another really good tip: Spend as much time as possible reflecting on the past. Look at the fun times you had in the past and think about how impossible they are now because your life has changed. Look at the bad times you had in the past and try to work out how they were your fault or how they mark general trends in your life.

I spent a good five minutes trying to come up with a witty one-liner and couldn't. I've been really good at avoiding all 7 of the things on this list. Then this comment cleaned my clock. Yeah. I do this a lot. I mean a LOT. Like A. LOT. It tortures me day and night now that I'm 32 that all the fun is gone from life and it won't ever be as great as I remember in my 20's. Well there's possibly 60 more years of this to go, pal. It's gonna be a long ride in the car if you keep up the "I'm not touching you" game for most of it.

To really maximize this effect, look for the moments that took you from that happier time to the present, and then spend a great deal of time focusing on how you could change those if you could only go back in time to change them.

So if someone wants to go skydiving with a broken parachute because they think it’ll just make them fall faster, but they’ll still be safe we shouldn’t stop them because no body else knows what’s good for you?
If we find out someone has suicidal thoughts we shouldn’t help them because we don’t know what’s good for them?
We should just let pedos roam with our children because we cannot know what is good for them?
Yeah, nobody can give advice to anyone, ever.

      No,
He means that you know damn well that’s a stupid idea and you shouldn’t rely on others to stop you from doing the things you know you should not do. He also didn’t advice you not to help people that are seriously confused.
Edit: What you did was a classical straw man argument. Although in the context of maximizing misery maybe you just improved his advice.

Matthew Taylor both paying and not paying rent have advantages. Depending how much you pay you can be left with very little money so you are unable to do anything, plus work can leave you exhausted so you won't do anything anyway.
Not paying rent leaves you without a weekly goal "make this much money", it doesn't force you to get a job which is a distraction and most of the time provides human interaction, you are also not paying for your own basic needs which can make you feel worthless.

      1. Go outside, get moving, don't lock yourself up.
      2. Fix your sleep schedule, get proper sleep.
      3. Reduce your screen time.
      4. Don't fret over irrelevant topics and things that you can't control. If you want to do something, do it.
      5. Set a clear and achievable goal. Make small consistent goals.
      6. Don't search for your idea of happiness, just do what makes you happy.
      7. Think things through, weigh and understand the consequences/results of your action.

The reason I like videos like this more than “motivation” videos that tell you what to do is because nobody likes to be told what to do and so you’ll just watch the video and forget about it minutes later.
For example, this video gives you steps on how to be unhappy and to those of us who want a happier life all we have to do is simply not do those things. It’s much easier to not do something than it is to do something. It doesn’t matter what we do, as long as we don’t do the things mentioned in this video, you’ll automatically be doing something without it feeling like a chore.

    • @SRrayquaza
      @SRrayquaza 2 роки тому +307

Yup, I agree. The reason this video is so effective, is that it points out exactly the things we're guilty of and holds us accountable for it which it's a harsh task to do for every person. But, the video also shows the consequences of it if you don't do so making it so more effective

@@Pluto-ek3mh Influencers aren't really... skilled. Several of them from where I come have publicly come out about heavy depression, body dysmorphia, eating disorders and whatnot. Even if they're objectively skilled, they're not really "better" than any of us. They're us but with more money and a lot more public exposure. None of that matters in the grand scheme if you don't want it to.
I like the way "you will only live in their shadow" is a bit like how this video itself works. This is why we shouldn't compare, as you mentioned originally, because it brings out these arguments which don't really open up anything new but rather just keep the same old circle going.

I'm an IT guy and I have to say it feels good to be away from the computer and filling my days with something a little more useful. I have a regular sleeping pattern now though I do still stay up a little too late each and every day, and every single day I arrive at work thinking "why the fuck didn't I go to sleep earlier, i promised myself I would"
I do feel more fit and once I get through the sleepyness and am actually ready to do things it feels good to be busy. It's friday now and I actually feel like the weekend is my reward, instead of 'just another day'.
I abandoned sporting though. Can't muster up the energy to do a workout after work (i've never been a sporty guy, ever, which is the excuse I tell myself too, cuz it's true) but so far so good.
You can do it. You just need someone to give you that little push to get busy. Meeting new people is definately one of the biggest improvements you can make. You need to get out of your comfortable little bubble if you ever wanna not be depressed af. It seems comfortable until you look back and think how depressing it is.
      God speed.

How to be miserable: Procrastinate on everything
    Food - Can wait.
Fun things - Are expensive better save that money and time.
Urgent stuff - Too stressfull let's do that later.
Family and friends - You need to do important stuff first
Important stuff- What defines important, is it really imporant enough let's think about that for a long time.
Outdoors- Nah it's to (cold, windy, wet, bright, humid, etc.)
Sleep - As long as I don't sleep it doesn't become the next day now I have more time.
Romanticize pain and be upset about what could have been voila you're miserable.

To anyone struggling with doing all these things, as he said with cleaning your house, start with improving one at a time. Trying to fix your entire life at once sets you up for failure there as well. I've entered a very deep depression over the last two years and I'm still doing many of these things. i KNOW they're bad for me, and I screamed at myself every day to just get up and do something. I've only recently managed to start fixing my sleep schedule and just correcting that single aspect has already made a massive change. i'm currently focussing on taking a walk and shower in the morning when I get up (consistently now at least) rather than feeling sorry for myself in bed for 4 hours. I still hate the walking and have no desire to do it yet and I'm struggling to keep to my plan. That said, progress is progress. Hang in there.

Unless you're lucky enough to make a fool out of yourself and react to it. Then you can get rejected anew all over again.
Don't sell yourself short when it comes to perpetual self loathing. You got this.

This made me realize this is what happens to people in old folks homes unless they make a very real effort to go on walks and socialize

I worked in an old folks home till just now when they won’t employ me cos i had an adverse reaction to the vax and so i won’t get another. Anyway, a few years ago we went to a children village complex in Uganda to work and there they had a teaching institute for people who want to start similar works. Anyway, one day the topic was ‘the difference between an orphanage and a children’s home/ or a home’. They went through all these things like ‘ you don’t have your own belongings or they’re not looked after’ and ‘there is no physical contact’ or ‘who you are and what you do doesn’t mean anything’. As they went on and on i realised with dread that old people’s home’s are orphanages for the 80s and 90 year olds. So i totally agree with your comment.

@@aidanpoulter9514 your comment was just as eye-opening. Old folks homes being orphanages for the elderly... that's such a perfect way to put it.

This may sound cliche but this video saved my life. For years I was wallowing my own self pity but you made me realise that my doing the opposite of what you said I'd get better. Thanks Grey:)
