Thank you for all the bass line ideas!
All the bass lines in this video were from Primus songs, except "The Awakening" which is from Les Claypool and The Holy Mackerel.
Who shall I cover next? 🤔
mudvayne
I wish you would stop talking so much
Ryan Martinie of mudvayne is a really interesting one. He has some super heavy bass lines but they're still funky and quite challenging
Davie504
Let’s see you on a fretless,
Would love to see that
Les Claypool is a master of simultaneously making someone want to play bass, while also making them give up on the idea.
i started on bass cuz of him... im playing for about 5 months. today I know i will never play this fuckin shit
I know how to play a couple of his songs including Tommy the Cat
Like, I’m pretty close to getting it right but goddamn Les has some bass stamina
@@CouchEconomyTX yeah, the only problem i have with that song Is that my Hand Just gives up Midway
tbh it is more insane than that because i cannot even listen to the words and the bass at the same time in most of his stuff. i have to literally decide ahead of time which one to focus on and appreciate yet this dude created and executed both. mind blown
@@andrenunes9804 I wouldnt say that, though I understand where you're coming from.
I thought for years that I'd never learn to play any Primus or Tool tracks, so I didnt even try. For years.
I envied their skill, but because of doubt, I never tried. Now, I'm no master, but I've learned a coupla handfuls of songs pretty well, and I'm so stoked that I have.
This video really brings home how skilled Les actually is. Not only does he play these ridiculous grooves, but he does it while singing and doing the Groucho Marx walk around the stage.
blow him already, ya know ya wanna.
Exactly. How many bass players can play these grooves while doing like three things at once? LOL.
I’m not sure I’d call that singing, but I get your point.
It blew my mind when I saw Primus live....Even though I knew their music well already. Hearing Les is one thing, but seeing him do it holy shit....
@@croulantroulant3082 right?
Im pretty sure Claypool put a curse on "tommy the cat" so that no one could ever play it the same
Maybe cause people try to play it on 4 string bass instead of 6 string fretless (in addition to technical difficulty)?
Everyone knows Les Claypool is a warlock who has paranormal powers.
I think most players go wrong when they try to get overly precise. It's supposed to sound like an avalanche. Les was once asked which fingers he uses for plucking vs stroking and he basically said which ever nails are the most fucked up that day.
Davie504 can do it.
He’s the one that taught Les how to play it, after all.
@@TheCouchCommando Tommy the cat was originally on 4 string and slower. You can fin a recording of it from 1989.
No one else on this planet other than Les claypool seems to be able to play Tommy the cat without sounding wrong
I always feel it's the 5-4-3 bit on the E string which doesn't sound right. Les Claypool is a God of bass.
@@TheMediocreCyclist and like geddy lee.................he sings the damn songs as well.
@@sicfrynut Lemmy as well
Cover Solutions managed to pull it off p convincingly I'd say.
@@KnjazNazrathjust watched that. yeah actually to be honest that was pretty bang on. I stand corrected
Keep in mind, he sings over a lot of these. Imagine what this man is capable of when not worrying about lyrics, keeping in time verbally and the nerves that come with singing. Terrifying skill
I dont know about Les, but I remember Geddy Lee saying in interviews that it all comes down to rehearsal. You should know the song so well that playing it is like going on autopilot, and that's why he makes singing and playing at the same time look easy. He tries to write basslines that are "easy" to sing over, but sometimes the instrument and the vocals are so diametrically opposed, it takes him months to nail singing and playing it in unison.
@@jonathansefcik473 it's a skill in it's own to be able to sing and play. I can play some simple ass song I learned years ago but singing with it makes it totally different. That would go with every song you play, and Les has written many songs lol.
He does not sing over most of these, when it gets to the singing part Claypool plays something a lot simpler, look at Tommy the Cat for example, he never plays the riff when he is singing.
It's on a fretless, too. Les is absolutely ridiculous
I know, I can't understand how he can do those complex techniques in perfect time while saying all that crazy stuff.. That's why I love so many of his live solos (dozens of which can be found on UA-cam). For every live performance with every band, he always does an extended jam session on multiple songs (sometimes lasting close to 10 minutes, making you forget what song they're even playing until the end lol).. When he starts improvising, it becomes a bizarre, heavy, psychedelic, slightly-dark experience that is unlike any other musician I've heard. The way he's able to freely bend the notes and low overtones is totally unorthodox (since he says he taught himself to play by screwing around on the bass while watching cartoons as a teenager..which explains a lot lol).. The definition of what it is "To Defy the Laws of Tradition"..
That intro was so long you've talked me into a new decade
I'm sorry, I hope you still watched the short bass solo right at the end...
Absolutely loved this showcase of Primus! But your headphone cord was annoying me for some reason.....
@@mollyfletcher7746 you comment hopping to make Charles see your opinion is annoying.
@@D.H.1082 If comments annoy you, you might want to get off the internet and take a walk bud... Loved the vid!
Wow, talk about ungrateful. He's one of the best bass players I've ever seen. You and I see him basically for free. Wake up
To me “My Name is Mud” is the reason I learned to appreciate Bass in music. Still my favorite Primus song.
Claypool is one of the few "showy" musicians I unambiguously love. He makes everything, no matter how weird, sound completely natural. Plus, watching him, there's an incredible economy of motion.
He makes it look effortless. His hand motions, he seems to barely move. That is in part, for me, what makes Les so awesome. You know how in movies and TV shows they hire an actore who has NO idea hot to play? Then they hand them a bass an say "here, you play this in this scene" well, thats what les claypool lookes like when he plays, but yet the notes that come out are from an elite player. It's so fuckin odd lol just flick your pick hand up an down slowly, an barely move your fret hand. Yet he is hitting like 1000000000 notes a sec in some songs., It's crazy. Les is the only bassist i know that pulls this off some how
Yeah, and he sometimes wears a pig mask when they’re playing Mr. Krinkle. Pretty cool. Primus Sucks!
The mind blowing part of all this is, Les is either singing on top of it or dancing around the stage while sounding clean as F.

Notjeffy YT no no he has a opinionated point
Notjeffy YT nah you’re alright mate. I think Jerry is a bit of an overrated song, personally. So I get it.
Fish on my friend
@@BootsORiley I think all their songs deserve all the acclaim they get. However, there are so many mind-blowing, little-known tracks by solo Claypool and his many side projects (plus the last 3 Primus albums of the last decade), which get very little attention. I love the bands called Fearless Flying Frog Brigade and Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains (with Buckethead). Also, I'm glad Oysterhead has reunited to tour this summer (and play the Rush album "Farewell to Kings" in its entirety, followed by a set of Primus)..
Les Claypool comes up with riffs that I would never have even thought of making in my lifetime.
I say it's the finest of weird. 🙌
I think he throws something at his bass, then tries to recreate that sound with his fingers….
The main riff from "Is it luck?" to me always sounded like a 10-foot tall looney tunes alien playing a wad of rubber bands like a harp or something.
Agrees in what the fuck
It's so fast paced
It's literally Mario sounds
Jerry was a racecar driver......
That took me back to when I used to play Tony hawk pro skater......awesome!!!
The first 2 minutes at least lol. Nostalgia.
Because I had the N64 version I had no idea that song had lyrics. When I heard that full song for the first time I was like, "WHAAAAAAAA??? THERE'S WORDS????"
Yeah he kind of breezed through it though I wish he would have played a little more because even the intro has a few different parts that he didn't get to. The part right after he cuts off has the one sliding note that (imo) is what makes the intro so sick.

I should probably start putting those time markers in to save everyone the trouble...
Oh phew, I would have died with that much talking. Thanks man
you're going to give this dude a condition lmfao
Oh man thx I was wondering when he would stop talking
This really puts into perspective how important Ler is to their sound, and why it's so tragic that people tend to overlook him. John The Fisherman in particular sounded wicked weird without Ler's guitar over it
I'm like 95% sure todd huth was who composed the guitar part for john the fisherman. Feel free to fact check as I'm not 100%. Ler is incredible though! No fackin doubt aboot it! I cant imagine having to come up with guitar parts on top of herb and les's grooves. Herb and les could be a 2 piece and would still sound incredible. Don't sleep on herb....He's such a tight drummer it's nuckin futs!
Ler is an underrated guitarist! Imagine the recognition he might get if he was playing with a more normal bass player!
@@obiwunnablowme4577 I mean it's possible, it's definitely one of their staples

John the Fisherman was one of the most advanced songs my dad tried to teach me back when I had my bass. Practiced it for months... 30 years later I still have some the muscle memory from it.
Don’t play it the way this guy did. It’s wrong just like all the tab out there is. Listen and watch Les play it, he clearly hits a G and not a G# on the E string for the main riff for the 4th note.
Add the fact that Les plays these while singing his weird rap. Great video, I hope this gets enough support so you can run for a part 2
My first thought exactly
Nice...Vocals💖
His bass lines and melodies are very carefully constructed to not step over the top of each other.... same with Rush and The Police.
I played bass and sang lead in a band and I had to be careful how we wrote the songs. I couldn’t sing just anything while I was playing... a good example of a simple bass line and melody that is practically impossible to sing and play at the same time is the classic “Brick House” by Commodores. Try it. It’s almost impossible without screwing up the bass part or the melody (it gets screwy right around the “she’s mighty mighty, just lettin it all hang out” part). A lot of syncopated bass lines with melodies that sit polyrhythmically over them are impossible to sing and play at the same time... unless you have a computer for a brain.
If that happens, it needs Lee Van Cleef and Southbound Pachyderm.
EDIT: Also the Primus rendition of Master of Puppets. Believe me, it’s amazing.

I think American Life will always be my favourite Claypool line. Certainly no where near his most complex but there is something so damned catchy about it. Pure efficiency in motion as well in how it's played.
*Edit* that moment when you realise you commented the exact same thing 2 years ago and completely forgot. I guess that reinforces my opinion!
John the Fisherman is the most enduring Primus song for me. Their songs always feel like an old joke after a few listens, but I keep coming back to that one.
Just amazing. I also love Southbound Pachyderm and of course Too Many Puppies 🐶
Jerry Was A Racecar Driver is it for me, though John The Fisherman is fire too.
I think John the fisherman and American life are the most listenable and badass primus songs in my opinion.
The fact that he's able to sing over that bass line at the same time as playing practicing two basslines scares me.
@@kaymonyoung1054 It's just muscle memory from doing it over and over for years most likely but yes it still takes mad skill
Nicely done. As a 6 string guitarist I never really appreciated the skills bass players can have until I became a Primus fan about 20 years ago. Now I make it a point to listen to the bass as well as the 6 string riffs in songs which has opened a whole new world for me. Keep up the great work - love your vids. 👍
What practicing 8 hours an hour looks like

Makes you wonder what Metallica would have sounded like had he joined them.
Pretty much the same, check out rob's earlier project: infectious grooves
@Lee McDonald Uh, they would've sounded amazing.
It's the same argument as "What if they kept Dave?". Might have worked/ might not have... either way it would have deprived us of Primus/ Megadeth.
Now if they Kept Dave & snagged Les.... BWAAAAAAAHAHAHAAA!!!
They would have buried him in the mix.
@Lee McDonald yeah, because he's too good of a bassist. Not me saying it, James did.

Les Claypool will forever be my favorite unconventional rock bassist, but I feel like Ler LaLonde is maybe the most underrated/overlooked rock guitarist ever.
Definitely, Ler is such a badass guitarist and the riffs he coms up with over Les's bass lines is just incredible
100% agree. LaLonde wrote the most interesting riffs of any "pop" guitarist. Unique and technically adept, overshadowed by Les but necessary for his success.
Yes, Larry played in a bunch of metal bands around San Francisco before he joined Primus. Joe Satriani was his teacher at one stage.
Larry proves how great Les is. Imagine being so good you almost completely overshadow the other virtuoso in your band
@@rudi_tabootie I would attribute that to "frontmanism" and Les' personality/fashion, plus the relative uniqueness of a bassist bandleader in pop.

Finally a Primus bass line video! Thank you!
That was great Charles. I also saw you did one for Flea. Have you ever done one for Geddy Lee? Geddy was a huge influence on Les Claypool, one of his heroes. He was a very inventive bass player, especially for the time. He also sang lead vocals while playing those riffs, not to mention triggering keyboards with his feet via Taurus pedals way back in the 70s. He was way ahead of his time.
Just thought I’d ask. I didn’t see one on your channel. I know that Geddy was all progressive rock, not Jazz or Funk, so it may not be your thing, but he has some pretty cool riffs over the years, like “La Villain Strangiato”, “YYZed” and so many more. You may have done one and I just missed it.
