His bass lines and melodies are very carefully constructed to not step over the top of each other.... same with Rush and The Police. I played bass and sang lead in a band and I had to be careful how we wrote the songs. I couldn’t sing just anything while I was playing... a good example of a simple bass line and melody that is practically impossible to sing and play at the same time is the classic “Brick House” by Commodores. Try it. It’s almost impossible without screwing up the bass part or the melody (it gets screwy right around the “she’s mighty mighty, just lettin it all hang out” part). A lot of syncopated bass lines with melodies that sit polyrhythmically over them are impossible to sing and play at the same time... unless you have a computer for a brain.

Now if they Kept Dave & snagged Les.... BWAAAAAAAHAHAHAAA!!!
They would have buried him in the mix.
@Lee McDonald yeah, because he's too good of a bassist. Not me saying it, James did.
I’ve been a Primus fan for 28 years. To hear you nail DMV like that right off the bat, I was blown away

But Laquer heads basd solo is super fast slapping, thats gotta be hard to
@@zacharywellington5047 I was dissapointed that one wasn't on this video.
@@zacharywellington5047 I was expecting to see that on here too. I was a little disappointed that "Southbound Pacaderm" didn't make it either.
Yeah I’m surprised electric Uncle Sam didn’t make it. Don’t just let mud slip through the cracks though!
If you like Primus, can I suggest Sausage (the original Primus lineup later reformed as Sausage)? Whereas Primus was evening BBQs in the back yard with friends music, Sausage is a darker, smoother, driving in the rain at night sort of a feel. With 100% of your RDA of Les Claypool. Some seriously overlooked licks in their sole album Riddle Are Abound Tonight.
Headphone cable: You're not allowed to play above the 11th fret.

Great job Charles ! Les Claypool will definitely approve of this . I wouldn’t be surprised if Les and the boys of Primus give you an opportunity to play with them at one of their gigs .

The cord is there to prevent a failure in the space time fabric.
Unbearable
How dare you say that

So sick 🤘🤘
The slap, strum, hammer-on combo is baller as hell. I high key love it.
Epic battle between Charles and his headphone cable.
Les Claypool will forever be my favorite unconventional rock bassist, but I feel like Ler LaLonde is maybe the most underrated/overlooked rock guitarist ever.
Definitely, Ler is such a badass guitarist and the riffs he coms up with over Les's bass lines is just incredible
100% agree. LaLonde wrote the most interesting riffs of any "pop" guitarist. Unique and technically adept, overshadowed by Les but necessary for his success.
Yes, Larry played in a bunch of metal bands around San Francisco before he joined Primus. Joe Satriani was his teacher at one stage.
Larry proves how great Les is. Imagine being so good you almost completely overshadow the other virtuoso in your band
@@rudi_tabootie I would attribute that to "frontmanism" and Les' personality/fashion, plus the relative uniqueness of a bassist bandleader in pop.
Not gonna lie i was suprised to not hear my name is mud in a primus best of video
@nynetynyne yeah and it requires a 5/6 string bass
@nynetynyne its way harder than it looks, one of claypool's most technical bass lines

It was and Les never gives Dexter Redding credit.
@@XCLent0 yes he does it in several times
Yes. And it's not even in a primus album
My first time hearing his Bass isolated. You do a great job and damn those are some groovy lines.
Les Claypool transformed the bass into a whole different instrument by doing whatever no one has done before. After him there is literally nothing left to innovate
0:32 Ohh god that headphone cable is gonna drive me nuts for the next 3 mins isn't it...
I got to see Primus for free at my old job in Alaskas they played live outside at Moose’s Tooth parking lot it was dope!!
This is just like diet davie 504
With less sugar
And more nutritional value
Overall a good alternative, if you wanna be healthier
Davie504 has tons of bass heavy vids, just not so much lately. He has his own Primus medley from several years ago.

We get more smiles from charles, wonder what his 1 million reveal will be as already given alot away for free compaired to pineapple pizza eater at 6 million lol
more like, davie504 is fast food, Charles is a gourmet meal.. it didn't used to be that way, but davie is 99% memes and nonsense vs. 1% actual bass-playing these days, unfortunately
Perfect description. Davie wastes too much time with memes and stupid things.
@@WillRose3 yeah.. he's a super talented bassist but memes gets viewers more than playing the bass.. pewdiepie kind of went the same route.. memes own youtube these days. I salute Charles for keeping his memes limited and mostly focusing on playing...but yeah Davie used to play in almost every video.. now it's mostly reactions and memes for views. Could say he's sold out.. but he's still fun to watch.. just not so much for actual music these days.
Charles you play these riffs so clean they could clean my kitchen, and my washroom...Try playing these while stomping around your living room just like Les!
Thanks for doing this. Primus inspired me to play bass and accept being odd. Thanks.

Les clapool had a new project with Sean Lennon, "The Claypool Lennon Delirium". I CHALLANGE YOU to cover this amazing combination
"new"?
@@andrepereira744 vc entendeu oq eu quis dizer
?
Lee Van Cleef is possibly the funnest Les bassline to play. Jerry was a race car driver is probably the hardest to learn to play. Lacquer Head is probably the most satisfying song to learn to play.
The best part about Primus is that no one can figure out what any of them are playing. Guitar, bass or drums. I can't play Primus on the bass, or the Guitar, but I love playing them on the drums. And it doesn't matter if I'm playing right. Because they play it different every fucking time.
Yes .being a drummer myself he plays like a drummer.
.
thats cause primus sucks!
Les Claypool is my favorite bass player of all times, this video deserves 100 million views !!!
Two words: headphone’s chords 🤷🏻♂️
love it 💚
That triggers me like "how the hell is he not bother by it ??"
It gives him super powers.
They go bye bye at 300k sub
He trolled is all. Made a pool about it, said he would get rid of it, and there it is. Maybe it's the secret source of his bass power level?
The headphone chord is literally giving me anxiety, just put it behind you dude 😨

Yes! Where is mud?!?!
How you can play without being driven insane by that headphone cord is beyond me
Shout out to The Reddings and bassist Dexter Redding; the composers of "The Awakening" in 1980!
So few people ever realize that is a cover.
The OG, that song got me into bass
So I thought I was playing dmv on a 4 string right for years until I watched you play it! So thanks for that! It kind of blew my mind how obvious the note structure is once I figured out what exactly you were playing!

Nice dude, you hit most of my favorites including Lacquerhead, most people seem to forget about that one but it’s always been one of my top.
Bass line on "Jerry was a racecar" driver sounds very familiar to "Elephant Talk" by King Crimson
Notice that both songs end on the same drum pattern too. I heard that Tony Levin and his Chapman Stick is the reason Claypool obtained a 6 string so.
Would be amazing to hear My Name is Mud here, but anyway American Life is fav amongst the songs played
Crazy how Les can slap like that and sing at the same time
Wynona's Big Brown Beaver will forever be my favorite Primus bassline. Never fails to make ya feel the funk

@@clipbaits7129 Hope this doesn' continue. Otherwise we'll have to call the police
@James sevensix Wow, really logical and musical argument you have there, so you don't realize how incredible Charles' solos where on Davie's last video? Seriously? He was BY FAR the best player and on that video outplayed Davie by a mile. It's hard to judge who's "better" as they are both skilled but I find Charles to be the better musician as he actually tours and plays professionally, Davie doesn't. So do you have anything to add or are you just a child throwing around insults?
@@ross-carlson Dude, take it easy. I think you took it too personal. You like Charles? Perfect. You like Davie? It's also perfect. Let's enjoy this two awesome musicians and don't start a silly battle by comparing them. Peace.
the thing is with Claypool is that he sings at the same time! now that's on a whole other level. but i gotta admit, your impossible bass solo is the hardest and most impressive piece i have ever seen played on a base. just completely sick Charles.
How about the bass solo from Zappa's The Purple Lagoon, that somehow keeps a secret beat when a note seems to to be an indeterminate length.
