How to Make a Crab Snare for $1.78

  • These DIY crab snares only cost $1.78 each to make. While they are pretty cheap, they are also incredibly effective at catching Dungeness crab and rock crab from shore (jetty or beach) without a boat in Washington state. I’ll show you how to make a crab snare and talk a little about how I fish with them. A 4-ounce weight would add another $1.50 on to the total cost. I fish with 4-8 ounces of weight depending on the current.
    Supplies are listed below. You can get most of them at your local hardware store or order them online. The prices were pretty similar. Most of these items aren’t sold as singles so you’re just going to have to buy more than what you would need for a single snare, but chances are you’ll go through a few snares in a season anyway and all your friends will want one too once they see how easy and effective these are at catching crab...so the more the merrier. The roll of cage wire makes something like 72 crab snares though.
    May you catch all the crabs and may they only be the good kind ;)

    Supplies to Make Crab Snares:
    * Trimmer Line .065-inch: amzn.to/2M901n4
    * Copper Crimp Sleeves 18-10: amzn.to/363vxdk (You could also use ring terminals 16-14 size w/ 5-6mm hole instead of looping the trimmer line and using the crimp sleeves)
    * Bicycle Inner Tube: amzn.to/3qDUqUP
    * Galvanized Cage Wire ½” x 1” mesh: amzn.to/2LX45Hl
    * #12 Jack Chain: amzn.to/35Z7rAk (best to just get a foot of this cut from the local hardware store for like $0.70 instead of having to buy a big roll)
    * 88-lb Duo-Lock Snaps: amzn.to/3p6qL6o
    * 4-oz Fishing Weights: amzn.to/360BjMA
    * Wire Cutters

    Having lost 4 store bought snares to the sea, I decided it was time to make my own. I like your design the best and have made 5 so far. Hopefully, I can get them in the ocean before the season ends in Norther California. Thanks!

    Clear conscience instructions very easy to follow, I like to twist the line going through the crimps so the loops are pointing upwards it increases the chances of snagging the crab upon retrieval ATB Spam.

    Wow so smart and intuitive, also fun to make and rewarding when you catch your crab. This method also doubles-down and you can also go fishing if you want as well. Thanks for sharing!

      I would only pay that amount for 1/2"x1/2" with lead weight embedded and mason mono loops.

    How prone are these to rusting? I asume the fencing is galvanized. Do you find razor clams or squid to be more effective as bait? Do you happen to know if there is someone in line for when Dan Ayres retires? The regulations may be burdensome but I think Washington has done a much better job than Oregon ensuring shellfish resources will be around for future generations. Dan Ayres seems to be a big part of that conservation minded effort.

    • @SeaWolfFishing
      @SeaWolfFishing  3 роки тому

      I rinse mine off in freshwater after each use in the salt so I don't really see them rusting, but I'm only using them for a season usually. The copper will develop a patina eventually, but at that point you'll probably want to replace the trimmer lines anyway as they start to lose their spring-back after a few months. Yes, the fencing is galvanized. I use both razor clams and squid and they've both worked great. I've heard from commercial crabbers that they like to include a jar of razor clams. I usually just try to include a variety in my snare: herring/mackerel/tuna + squid/razor clams.
      I don't know the plans for Dan Ayres position when he retires, but hopefully he sticks around for a while longer :) The regulations are never simple, but the complexity allows for the maximum use and enjoyment while still fulfilling legal obligations and conservation/future-minded harvest goals. They can't always get it right, but I've always been impressed with the way the shellfish managers in WA have dealt with adaptive management and responded to challenges based on the best science available at the time while making efforts to get more information to help better inform decisions so we can have these fisheries for years to come. Despite all the politics, we do live in a land of abundant opportunities here. For which I am very appreciative.
      I hope you get some good (shell)fishing in soon :)

    Question for you.... I noticed you're using copper crimps (or are they just copper colored) doesn't copper corrode quickly when in salt water ?

  • @gregorybiggs2068
    @gregorybiggs2068 Рік тому

    Great! You could have crimped the mono so the loop stands up better.

      The snare loops work fine really any way you attach them. If you have them angled up they might be slightly more effective though. I just use them whatever way they settle and catch plenty of crab so I don't think it really matters too much lol :)
