we do our creel eyes the same way except the other way around. it means the bottom is nice and tight and the top loose so once the lobster goes in the top lifts up and then drops back down after that way there's no way out! or if he sits on top off the eye he does not escape. your pots fish very well though.tight lines

Sorry if you have already put this down, what are the three twine sizes? Black i think was 3mm, Yellow 1.6mm not sure about the green, guessing 2mm? would the following be OK, black 3mm black 36Z and orange 24Z?
Gatelan Fishing - Great to hear. Like I said, there’s more give and flexibility with the hosepipe. A simple staple would cause it to rub through and eventually tear the mesh especially through bashing about in bad weather. 👍🏻🎣🦞🦀
If i do it from the shore what would be better to use. 1 entrance with parlour or a normal 2 entrance pot with no parlour. My aim is to check them daily
I was taught how to make the withy pots as a kid in Falmouth in the 50's, reckon I'm made a few hundred in my time but that was long ago, reckon I could still do it given the various size of withys & a pot stand. Regardless another interesting video, thanks.
Back in those days most villages had withy meadows, I wouldn't know where to get them now days, my mentor came from St Kevern & fished the manacles, Coverack etc. I am syill ploughing through your old video's. Great stuff thanks
Brilliant video and channel. Gonna have a go at making one myself. What material are the screws made from - are they marine grade or just bog standard screws? I checked the comments to see if somebody had already asked this. Bought a Fish Locker hoodie from your shop a few days ago and love it. Best wishes to you and your family.
just done my first!! dont kno how to show a picture! i used a bit of rubber on bottom and an a bit of led. next im gonna tryh a parlour. i got netting to of a friend to cheat lol. i drill wee holes for air to esape and soked it for a day. i cheated tho with fencing naild snd plenty screws! plenty rope.. look solid! nstead of ur line along bottom..im up in the western isles so theyll be well tested! great page mate! costing me about 5 pound for a creel lol

Great vid, again! You have the skill to teach and make it look easy. I bet a novice like me would take a week just making one! But how do you know where to drop them?
Hi John Great video and I'm definitely going to try making some during lockdown! Will be all set to try them off my boat at Bridlington once were finally allowed to go fishing again! You say in the video you would add a link to something on net making at the end, but I can't see it? Could you please copy it here. Cheers
Awesome 👌 Just recently found your channel and hammered it the last few weeks. Got my tags to drop pots YEARS ago but never got around to buying any once I seen the price of them 😱😂 Will definitely be giving this a try! Cheers 👍
I could have pulled out a better trap from my A$🤣 Just joking. You shared some serious skills for free. The store bought traps I have are more like a pile of cords and zipties holding together than crab pots now. I let mine soak for 48 hrs and most times I have healthy crab with as many as 30's to a trap when packed full of dead chicken. I'm not a big timer ,just lucked out on the place I found to crab fish. I'm just before sleep if this didn't make sense. I will be a subscriber and hopefully pick up on more of your shared knowledge. Many happy 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 to you sir.
Can you tell me how much 3mm, 2mm and 1.8mm twine I would need to buy without having to get much too much? Also, I noticed that your fishing needles are different sizes, are these used to gauge the size of the mesh? Thanks, Mark.
Ian Firkins - I’ve just gotten some brilliant weights from a friend of mine so they’ll be going in to soak soon. I don’t want to leave them for more than a couple of days max without checking them and work is getting in the way. 😡👎🏻Haha. But hopefully soon.
Hi John, I got the misses to make a pot and shes done a good job but have a question. How long should the rope be to the bouy in say 20meters deep. Im not sure what size to order because i presume you need a fair bit extra because of tides etc. cheers
God dam it John I'm going to give it a go. With a bit of practice the net building will get easier I reckon. One thought was to drill holes on the bent rods to let out air, or am I over thinking it. Also maybe a metal base, bolts and nuts instead of tacks. Where would I get the twine and needles? Great vid i realy enjoyed that one.
KWIM REAPER m - A steel base and frame would be perfect and serve to give added weight for sinking the pot. So if you can weld or know a blacksmith etc that would be perfect. This is simply how traditional pots from my home area are made. Some folks pour cement into the tubes to help with extra weight. I may pour sand in them and put a small bung in them. We’ll see how far I can be bothered to go.haha. The net tying is something that I really enjoy and once you get into it and find a rhythm it’s quite pleasurable. But best to practice first. I would google your nearest chandlers or simply ask some local fishermen. You can buy them all off eBay but they are usually cheaper from the local chandlers. 👍🏻🎣😉
Local chandler 4 miles away in Findhorn. I will keep you informed of my progress. I can't start till I get the garden sorted. But practicing the net building starts tommorow night. Thanks again.
KWIM REAPER m - Brilliant mate. Sewing a net is a dying art-form and very useful once you know how. Trick is to get your meshes even and your knots tight. Good luck, I look forward to seeing your progress mate. 😬👍🏻
Goose Y - Either off eBay or best bet is to find a local fisherman’s chandlers. If that fails, go and ask your local fishermen. That’s what I did when I first moved to the area. 😉👍🏻
Les Edwards - Thanks Les. Mine was from the local fisherman’s chandlers. But it can by found online ( although more expensive ) google braided polyethylene twine. Best thing if you can, is to ask your local fishermen where they buy it from. 😉👍🏻🎣🦀
Hi John, started on one of these yesterday. Do you recommend a specified height up for the side slats? Also, how long would you recommend to soak them? Thanks, Mark.
If I haven't given a measurement then I just eye ball it mate. Soaking for a week has them wet. But I have caught lobsters in them their first night of soaking.
as a part time coastal angler i am wondering if make a couple of pot is there a minimum / maximum mesh size? or what is the ideal size to make the mesh for the yorkshire coast not sure if the are regianal laws a few locals that i have asked wont tell me as the say putting pots out is illegal with out a licence/ registering even if it was only one.
Peter Attfield - In the north east coastal area you require what I called a limited shellfish permit. It is free but you must request one from the fisheries committee. I also believe you will need to fit an escape gap in the pot - which is a local byelaw. There is no limit on mesh size as far as I know. 😉👍🏻🎣🦞🦀
Thanks Your films are great I would love to copy your pots but could I buy netting material to save time Or is it v expensive Will try to do it myself but it looks quite complex Hope to see you on water one day in Falmouth or Penzance Cheers

Hi John and the Fish Locker Team. Love your channel. I have made the pots in your video and have used them from the beach checking them at low water and have had some very good results with them. I am now looking at buying a boat with my brother to fish off shore and also to shoot a few pots. Have you done a video on how to rig a fleet of 5/6 pots or can you point me in the direction of a website that might. I have a few questions like :- Do I need to add additional weights to hold the start and end of the line to hold the pots in place (in addition to weights already in pots). Do I need a certain buoy and does it need to have my boat name on etc. Do i need a license to put out pots? Are there areas I am not allowed to put them? Are there any tips on not upsetting local commercial crab fishermen? Many thanks, Scott (from Norfolk)
- Hi Scott. I have done a video showing how to rig and run a fleet. Its in the small boat owner playlist and the crab pot playlist. Almost all of the questions you ask are explained in the video. As for the license etc. You will need to speak to your local IFCA. Each area has slightly different rules.
@@TheFishLocker Thanks for your advice....much appreciated. Unfortunately I cant find the video in either playlist. Would you mind copying in the link for me. :-)
- Have a look on the Fishlocker fb page. There is a folder called "My Tackle purchases" in there are screen shots and links to buy the exact things I use.
Hi I am looking to do this and prior to starting I have been reading the bye laws in my area (Northumberland). A new regulation is that all pots must be fitted with escape gaps of a particular size. I am wondering is this something you may want to cover in a future video or modify your own home made pots? (If they are needed in Cornwall) I am in the process of applying for a NE IFCA limited shellfish permit as per your previous advice. Just want to make it all legit before having a go for the first time. Don’t want to get fined or damage the natural world
- There is no need Thomas. They aren't needed in all areas. I wouldn't expect a response any time soon. I applied for one twice last year and still haven't had a response. Haha.
@@TheFishLocker I was just reading about the guy that got fined £2000 in Ashington who didn’t have them fitted. I think it’s a new regulation this year. They look easy enough to put on. Look a bit like a letter box opening. Ps class videos by the way. I’m totally hooked on them!

- Don't listen to what folks say on forums. You get a lot of people who think they know what they're talking about but often don't. What you need to do is speak to your local fisheries officers. ( I am an ex fisheries officer ) All areas are different. In my area you do not need a license for pleasure use. Speak to your local IFCA. You can find them online and speak to one of your local team.
Adirondack Outdoors - Not entirely true. All areas are different. Some you don't need a license for personal consumption. But yes, if you wish to sell them you do need a license.

vermin filmer - Wow. That was lucky. Was it a snap off from error or a snap off from weak line though. I’ve had a few snap offs from birds nests and not taking the bail arm off.lol. But that wasn’t the lines fault. 😳

Great video! Really enjoyed it, very useful
- Thank you Martyn, I am glad that it helped.
could you use fencing staples to hold the bottom of the net to the wood base rather than old hose and tacks?. Cheers
- The reason for use hose and tacks is so it has a bit of give in it.
great video will be giving that a go

Excellent video gives me even more disgust and pissed offness for when a hole's steal your pots after all that work you put into, love your videos, bucket list trip over seas.
That is what pained me the most. If I had simply bought them I’d have just lost money. But after I’ve made them I’ve lost my time and effort.
we do our creel eyes the same way except the other way around. it means the bottom is nice and tight and the top loose so once the lobster goes in the top lifts up and then drops back down after that way there's no way out! or if he sits on top off the eye he does not escape. your pots fish very well though.tight lines
- I will try that next year. One slack at the top and one slack at the bottom and see which fishes best. ;)
That was mega interesting how you made the pots John. Phil Manchester.

Smart video do you have a video for showing us how to net the pots with nets that are pre made rather than making your own netting? Thanks in advance
No I don’t. I always make my own because it fits better.
Bike inner tube is good for holding door shut with a couple hooks (out of a coat hanger) saves trying to tight knots with cold hands
😜👍👍👍🏴✌️
chopperhehehe - Thats a good shout. I have the inner tube from an old trailer wheel that I’ve cut into strips. I have a couple of big plastic hooks salvaged from old broken pots. 😉👍🏻 But Great tip mate. 😬🎣🦀🦞
Sorry if you have already put this down, what are the three twine sizes? Black i think was 3mm, Yellow 1.6mm not sure about the green, guessing 2mm? would the following be OK, black 3mm black 36Z and orange 24Z?
- Those are just the sizes I use. You use what you can get and it should be fine. 😊
Good video matey only trouble is that net making is impossible to the layman just cannot do it but you make it look so easy so good look to you xxx
- I have done a video showing how to tie the netting. It is really simple once you get the hang of it.
Very impressive I enjoyed that video
Thank you. 😊👍🏻
Great video. I'll definitely be having a go at this.
Any reason you count use U nails instead of the hose pipe to hold the net sides down?
Gatelan Fishing - Great to hear. Like I said, there’s more give and flexibility with the hosepipe. A simple staple would cause it to rub through and eventually tear the mesh especially through bashing about in bad weather. 👍🏻🎣🦞🦀
If i do it from the shore what would be better to use. 1 entrance with parlour or a normal 2 entrance pot with no parlour. My aim is to check them daily
Checking daily - 2 entrances.
Cool
- Thank you.
I was taught how to make the withy pots as a kid in Falmouth in the 50's, reckon I'm made a few hundred in my time but that was long ago, reckon I could still do it given the various size of withys & a pot stand. Regardless another interesting video, thanks.
- I have a friend who is making them to use around the lizard. Really nice to see the skill surviving. :)
Back in those days most villages had withy meadows, I wouldn't know where to get them now days, my mentor came from St Kevern & fished the manacles, Coverack etc. I am syill ploughing through your old video's. Great stuff thanks
David Rowe - My friend lives down the lizard. There are a few spots for the withy wands but usually you have to buy them in.
Great video, very well explained, question, what is the difference between the blue water pipe u used, and mandrel piping u could not get.
- Thank you. The mandrel is solid. The pipe is obviously hollow. 😊
Just none ferrous screws so they don’t rust as quick. You look at a pot lasting 2-3 years so they don’t need to be stainless. That’s too expensive.
just done my first!! dont kno how to show a picture! i used a bit of rubber on bottom and an a bit of led. next im gonna tryh a parlour. i got netting to of a friend to cheat lol.
i drill wee holes for air to esape and soked it for a day. i cheated tho with fencing naild snd plenty screws! plenty rope.. look solid! nstead of ur line along bottom..im up in the western isles so theyll be well tested! great page mate! costing me about 5 pound for a creel lol

Hi where do you get your net from cause interested in making some pots and don't know where to get net from

Great vid, again! You have the skill to teach and make it look easy. I bet a novice like me would take a week just making one! But how do you know where to drop them?

Awesome 👌 Just recently found your channel and hammered it the last few weeks. Got my tags to drop pots YEARS ago but never got around to buying any once I seen the price of them 😱😂 Will definitely be giving this a try! Cheers 👍
Welcome to the channel. Be sure to check the validity for your tags. Most places for unlicensed you need to renew every year. 😉🦞🦀
I also lost them years ago and haven't got a boat either 😂 Still think I'll give making 1 a try though 👌
I could have pulled out a better trap from my A$🤣
Just joking.
Phil Lowman - Glad you enjoyed the video Phil. Yes this is the traditional way to make them. I hope you enjoy the rest of the channel content. 👍🏻🎣😉
Can you tell me how much 3mm, 2mm and 1.8mm twine I would need to buy without having to get much too much?
Also, I noticed that your fishing needles are different sizes, are these used to gauge the size of the mesh? Thanks, Mark.
You buy it by the coil Mark. The different sized needles aren't to measure the different meshes, simply to make them.
@@TheFishLocker, ok, thank you.
Great knotting skills John! When will we see you use them? 😉
Ian Firkins - I’ve just gotten some brilliant weights from a friend of mine so they’ll be going in to soak soon. I don’t want to leave them for more than a couple of days max without checking them and work is getting in the way. 😡👎🏻Haha. But hopefully soon.
Another great video. I'm loving the shed shenanigans. How long do you reckon it takes to make a pot from start to finish?
- I don't know. If I made one on its own, it would take longer than if I made 4 at the same time and divided the time by 4. If that makes sense?
Hi John, I got the misses to make a pot and shes done a good job but have a question. How long should the rope be to the bouy in say 20meters deep. Im not sure what size to order because i presume you need a fair bit extra because of tides etc. cheers
There is a video explaining all that on the channel. 👍🏻
Where do you buy your twine and how much, I cannot seem to get a hold of reasonably priced twine for my pots
Goose Y - Either off eBay or best bet is to find a local fisherman’s chandlers. If that fails, go and ask your local fishermen. That’s what I did when I first moved to the area. 😉👍🏻
Great video John can you please tell me where you source your cordage for the netting
Les Edwards - Thanks Les. Mine was from the local fisherman’s chandlers. But it can by found online ( although more expensive ) google braided polyethylene twine. Best thing if you can, is to ask your local fishermen where they buy it from. 😉👍🏻🎣🦀
Thanks mate
Les Edwards - No worries pal. 👍🏻🎣
@@TheFishLocker thank you for your advice
Do you drill holes into the tops of the pipes to let air out of them so the traps aren't buoyant?
- The plastic is buoyant anyway but the air escapes our of hole in them yes.
Thanks

Or is it v expensive
Will try to do it myself but it looks quite complex

jimmy flynn - It doesn’t matter if you do it all in one piece as it’s tied at ever bough and end. Just so long as you get them all it doesn’t matter too much. 👍🏻🎣
You actually make the net on the frame?! How did you learn this? Amazing! Thank you!

Hi John, Quick question (sorry its been bugging me :-) )...why do you not use the crab pot base the other way around so it is flat? Really enjoy your channel BTW
- It wears out faster that way and doesnt snag up as much on the seabed.
Hi great video, how much additional weight are you putting in the pots?
- Probably around 4-5kg
where do you buy the net twine from ,i cant find anything in decent lengths
- Have a look on the fish locker fb page. We have a photo album called "My tackle Purchases" In there it shows links to where I buy all of my tackle. 😊

DumbestFisherman TV - Is it not? Here in the UK you are allowed to fish/collect a certain amount for your own personal consumption. 10 pots - 2 lobsters and 10 crabs I think it is. It goes back to King Henry VIII and the Magna-Carta. 😬🎣🦞🐟🐚

I have seen you have commented on the video showing how to use crab pots. For the relevant laws you need to speak to your local IFCA.
Do you need a licence if using less than 5 pots? Forums seem to have mixed views on it, thanks
The Fish Locker, sorry did not know it was inconsistent throughout areas, thank you for the correction.
@@TheFishLocker I'm North Devon, I'll find out, thanks 👍
How much does it cost to make this
- Depends on what materials you buy and what you salvage. Or how many you make.
