    This is a wonderful old technique for converting volume to gram weights. I first saw this in a classroom in 2005, but I'm pretty sure it's older than that. Thank you for bringing it to UA-cam.
    Incidentally, this is PRECISELY the calculation being made by Matrix and MatrixGold and their predecessors RhinoGold and TechGems. They call it density instead of Specific Gravity, but it's pretty much the same.

      Hi PJ.... I will try to provide more feedback regarding your work. I have been studying your works extensively for about a year now.I find that you are able to demystify the central problems which tend to hinder learning within 3D Modelling practise. You provide continuity, from subject to subject ,which enables students to advance their understanding and knowledge.This enables learners to check for understanding , and to reinforce the application of their new knowledge and skills.The attention that you give to the minutest details in your explanations , is part of the magic that underpins your teaching and guidance. I thank you , as must countless others who benefit from your works. KindRegards , Michael Cassimatis

    Thank you for your effort to make such wonderful videos, can you make a series of video of to make rings using different types of setting, what are the technical parameters to be consider according to diamond size. For example if we are making a prong setting for diamond of sieve size of 6.5 , how should we consider dimension of prong

    • @PJChenJewelryDesign
      @PJChenJewelryDesign  6 років тому

      Hi Shwetank, The prongs number, and thickness is a design/aesthetic choice.There is no set rule for it. For example, you can have four 1.2 mm prongs OR ten 0.6mm prongs for 1ct round diamond. Technically, you don't want the girdle of stone cut over 50% thickness of prong, which will weaken the setting, and cause you repeating repair in the future. Two Rhino plug-in software GemVision Matrix and RhinoGold (they both own by Stuller now) have excellent feature regarding the stone setting and various prong shapes. It will speed up your design process on modeling jewelry. If you are in jewelry business, you can check out that two software at www.stuller.com/customsolutions/

    Hey PJ, whats the difference between what you did and taking the volume(mm3) of the ring and multiplying it by the density(g/mm3) of 14k gold. We would get the same result, the mass in grams, which we could then convert to troy ounces.

    • @PJChenJewelryDesign
      @PJChenJewelryDesign  6 років тому

      Base on google search "The difference between density and specific gravity is that one is a ratio of the other. Density is the measure of the amount of mass per volume. Specific gravity is a measure density relative to the density of a reference substance." I was using specific gravity to do the calculation. Thank you for providing information for other calculations. ^_^

    Hi PJ, I've recently subscribed as a member for your online stone setting course. The videos were amazing & clear. Loved them all! But I was wondering if there's a video on what to take note on before the wax is printed and sent for investment casting? Like what's the thinnest width we can go for in the design. Because designing it in Rhino/Matrix makes everything looks pretty, and probably will look good in the printed wax too, but when it comes to investment casting, the outcome isn't what was expected. ☹️ Why is that?

    • @PJChenJewelryDesign
      @PJChenJewelryDesign  4 роки тому +1

      Hi ADMWWS, I wish there is a rule and standard for it. A short answer for your question, there is no standard thickness for casting and printing. the longer answers will be depends on the structure of design, stone arrangement, type of metal casting, finishing process ect. Each metal casting vendor has they own casting setup and polishing finish process. Even the same CAD sent to different casting vendors, you may have different result due to different 3D printers (shrinkage), casting setup and finishing process. I will suggest you to do some test with certain vendors to find the best result for you.

    This helped a lot. Could you tell me more about the size and weights of jewelry from a basic knowledge point of view. I'm familiar with creating custom styles by hand but not computerized. I recently reached out for a cad and was asked about the size and weight but I had no idea of how to calculate this from my hand drawings. Is there a tutorial or step that I can take to learn more about this process from hand drawings?

    • @PJChenJewelryDesign

    Good tutorial but why you call density a specific gravity?

    • @PJChenJewelryDesign
      @PJChenJewelryDesign  3 роки тому

      I use specific gravity to calculate the different weight of metal for casting compare to wax. Here is what I found the definition online.
      Density and specific gravity are both used to describe mass and can be used to compare substances. However, they are not identical measures.
      Density is defined as mass per unit volume. It has the SI unit kg m-3 or kg/m3 and is an absolute quantity.
      Specific gravity is the ratio of a material's density with that of water at 4 °C (where it is most dense and is taken to have the value 999.974 kg m-3). It is therefore a relative quantity with no units.
      The words ‘taken to have the value’ are important here, as the value of maximum density cannot be known exactly (nor, for that matter, can the temperature of 4 °C be realised exactly).
      www.npl.co.uk/resources/q-a/density-specific-gravity-differences#:~:text=Density%20is%20defined%20as%20mass%20per%20unit%20volume.&text=Specific%20gravity%20is%20the%20ratio,relative%20quantity%20with%20no%20units.
