    A couple of corrections courtesy of eagle-eyed viewers:
    1) The original SSD is in fact PCIE 3.0 (not 4.0) - this unit was originally specified to contain a PCIE 4.0 drive and I neglected to double-check the spec of the installed drive. The advertising/promotional material has since been corrected.
    2) 09:48 - the included snippet of the screen capture for "flat-on-desk" does not show the 86 degree GPU temperature referenced in the video & the CPU is still running at 55W (vs. the 45w steady-state/PL1 shown in the "elevated" footage) - the CPU does eventually settle to 45w & the GPU will gradually rise to ~86 and remain there indefinitely.
    If you spot any other errors please let me know and I'll pin them here :)

    I'm daily driving this exact spec for work and gaming, and am surprised to see these results. My experience so far has been very solid, as I went in with no expectations of low fan noise or long battery life. The software issues don't bother me and the 'G' key works perfectly fine enabling and disabling the performance fan profile during gaming.
    I've made an effort not to tweak or benchmark the device too much as I don't want to add any bias during these first few months, but I haven't 'noticed' any major throttling whatsoever. I have seen very high temps so I can only assume some thermal management is going on, but don't notice any game performance loss.
    FWIW regarding fan noise, I never hear the fans during work use - the cooling is borrowed from Alienware, does the job well under normal load.

    The weird thing is that it is also so loud. I think the laptop is given more power than is necessary all the time.

    thanks for your very professional work , and I had just paid $2309 with 277 cashback for this laptop. the 2230 M.2 will be definitely a pain ,but it may be used in steamdeck to replace the awkard 64GB MMC(if you have booked a budget version from US). As I had viewed quite a bit test videos, yours are the best which unassembly the whole machine (Most of the test reviews dont even try to touch the fans).
    However, the fan noise and temp bad feeling may be just personal. Most of the tests from the others are providing positive feedbacks comparing to other gaming laptops for these. So, it may not be an issue for me, but your point about the up-side-down motherboard is definitely pain my ass for cleaning the dust.
    Anyway, thanks for everything and I have subscribed your channel, and expecting your other videos in future.

    @NuclearNotebook Great review, I was looking to buy G15, but with the 2nd SSD issues, I changed my mind now. Can you suggest a good laptop, with specs, such as i7 12700h, 3070ti, 32Gb ram(seen most laptop with this configuration having a default 16gb ram), plus storage of 1tb or 512 gb. My use would be something I would be gaming on it 30 to 40% of the time, while other usage would be related heavy internet usage, plus sim software like Matlab. Budget would be near to 2500 to 2000 usd

    thanks for the review. found this after i had bought my laptop and was looking for a tear down of the laptop. i appreciate that. this is the first laptop where the head pipes aren't on the bottom of the laptop and it looks to be a pain to get to them. i was going remove the thermal paste and add arctic MX4 since i heard that dell cheaps out on the thermal pastes. did you notice any thermal differences after reassembling vs before? currently when i run the cpu at max 100% in power options and on a easy title i get where its bumping up to the 98C temperature ranges and 60c idle ranges. which seem hot to me.

      I applied honeywell 7950 to mine and I do indeed see idle temps in the mid 50's and peak load temps exceeding 100 degrees on this laptop. The gpu on the other hand now hovers around 72 degrees under full load at just under 140 watts, which I consider a very healthy temperature.

I've been doing some research and it seems to be the same board (physically) and the only visible difference is the additional components on the GPU side.

    Fair point on the battery life and noise levels, but I experienced no issues with the g key, putting the laptop to sleep and waking it (except for the horrible s3 sleep bullshit ms/dell decided to leave in the worst possible state on this laptop). I took mine to bits when I got it to apply a better thermal compound (honeywell 7950) which game me a handsome bump in performance and took the temps down a notch. Sadly I was too eager to do the swap and didn't do pre-repasting measurements. I also didn't find any glaring issues with overtightened screws, unpeeled adhesive etc. during my disassembly, though it is a very painful laptop to change thermal paste on for sure.
    Overall a high quality review, however I feel like you should've RMAd your laptop, considering the sleep issues. Not sure how prudent it is to review a (seemingly) faulty unit.
    Alienware control center is very clunky, but does indeed work for me, however I must say that I did a clean install of windows 11 education to remove all the preloaded crap that comes with the laptop. I also did encounter the issue you had with it not exposing the thermal controls a few times, however the first time it happened was when I didn't fully plug in one of the RGB cables during reassembly and the subsequent times were all fixed by rebooting the computer. I haven't had this issue for months now, assuming it might've been fixed in one of the several updates the control center received in that time.
    Oh yes, and the speakers on this laptop are absolute garbage. Not sure if something got messed up with the reinstall, but I pretty much gave up on them entirely, opting for a bluetooth speaker I bought instead. Thankfully, I got this laptop largely as a portable desktop, since I travel often, and for that I'd say it is a good option, but it's definitely trash for use on the go.

    • @NuclearNotebook

      I can confirm that no variants of the 5520 have the second connector for the SSD. It's been deleted across the board this year. You'd need to return it and move to the Alienware M15 to get a similar (nearly identical) machine with two drive slots. Dell have good documentation on the Support website, you can have a look at the "Setup & Specifications" document for any given laptop to see available slots etc. Relevant one for the G15 5520 here: www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-au/g-series-15-5520-laptop/dell-g15-5520-setup-and-specifications/internal-slots?guid=guid-647a9bd6-0be5-4b27-9df1-31e3c269abed&lang=en-us

      They're using the same cooling system from 2021 (or maybe with some changes for the worse to cut cost?) to cater more powerful processors. That's why the GPU temperature is basically stable and the processor's temperature's peaking all the time. Last time they have solved this issue with BIOS updates.

    My Alienware m15 R7 is basically a slightly better version of this and Dell stupidly made the TB/USB C port passthrough integrated graphics on my model...

      You have 2 options basically, one being free and the other being expensive. The expensive option is to buy an HDMI 2.1 monitor but then you'll only have 4k 144hz options but no 1440p.
      The second is to enable adaptive sync via Intel graphics command center/windows 11. You'll still take a performance hit because you'll be using Optimus, but Intel now has adaptive sync available for iGPUs if your monitor is free sync/ gsync compatible. That's the method I'm doing now and so far it's worked well.
      www.reddit.com/r/XMG_gg/comments/q3jcqd/lets_talk_about_adaptive_sync_on_xmg_neo_with/?
      That post explains what you need to do basically to enable it.

    Thanks for the amazing review, I was planning to buy this model in India during the festive season sale, and because of this review and comments from other users I got to know that there is no secondary storage slot. This was a big deal breaker for me because I like keeping my homework, studies, and coding files in the main drive and games and other multimedia in another one. So when I went to buy a laptop I still went for Dell but the 2021 model (both 2021 and 2022 models are on sale in India). The dude in the Dell shop was trying hard to sell me the 2022 model and came up with a solution that they will upgrade my SSD to a 2TB drive for a relatively cheaper price and make partitions in the drive according to my needs but I couldn't say yes to the offer because just knowing the fact that there is literally a mark in the board for the feature but that has been willingly stripped down by Dell didn't feel good. Also, I saved a lot of money going for the 2021 model and put an SSD(1TB) in the second slot and still left with some money.

    What is the actual SSD drive in this laptop? I found in mine it appeared to be a Gen 3 SSD despite the specs stating that it would be a Gen 4 PCIe SSD.
    Edit - I complained to Dell and they issued a RMA for the laptop. I also see that they have now removed the reference to Gen 4 PCIe from their ordering page. My understanding is that the gen 4 ssd drives are 2280 devices rather than the 2230 device shown here.

    • @NuclearNotebook
      @NuclearNotebook  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for flagging that - you are correct, these ship with WD SN730 or Samsung PM991A in 512GB, both of which are indeed PCIE 3.0 x4, or WD SN810 for 1TB+, which is PCIE 4.0. You're also right that the easy visual difference is 2230 vs 2280 for PCIE 4 drives, I should have spotted that but got thrown right off by the original spec sheet claiming PCIE4.0 on all models. How annoying!

      Have you checked it while a game is running? If Advanced Optimus is working properly, any game running in the background should enable G-Sync, which should automatically appear in Control Panel. If it isn't, you can try a DDU uninstall + reinstall of the graphics drivers and see if that sorts it out.

    • @ItachiUchiha-ss5xi
      @ItachiUchiha-ss5xi 2 роки тому

      Dell G15 is clearly a great package given the cost but you are looking at some compromises in the long run (Missing 2nd SSD slot, plastic build all around, bad trackpad) and some issues with the software optimisation which impact the battery life and the G key glitches. To me, at this price point, you should be able to have some upgradable options and the glitches just ruin the experience given the fact you are spending a good amount of money. I was also interested in getting this laptop but all these issues that were pointed out in the vid made me re-evaluate my options. I'm waiting on the legion series to drop in India, then I can make a better buying decision myself.

      @NuclearNotebook  2 роки тому +3

      Bit of a delayed reply, apologies! I'm going to stand my ground on this one and say I can't recommend it, in good faith, despite the price - the unreliability & bugginess really got to me while testing it. It's far too irritating and I can't imagine trying to put up with it long-term. I'm also very disappointed at the regression in the quality of assembly compared to last year's G15 and that's a major concern - someone else could easily get one with more serious defects than the minor oopsies on mine. You could look at a similar MSI Katana/Sword or Lenovo Legion however I'm hesitant to firmly recommend either of those before testing them myself.
