WATCH ME Divide & Mount to a Basket - Staghorn Fern Chandelier - Bromeliads, Orchids & Ferns

  • In this DIY we show you how simple it is to divide stag horn ferns, remount to a basket and create a tropical chandelier effect using bromeliads, orchids, air plants and other ferns. In this video you will see how I propagated the stag horn fern, epiphyllums, rabbit's foot fern and bromeliads for this display. Majority of the plants used in this arrangement are epiphytic and are found growing in the stag horn's natural environment which make them plants that will thrive and coexist well with one another. I also selected tropical plants that are easy to grow with very little to no maintenance.

      THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! ...and you are just too kind to me!!! I am excited to see what you come up with! Make sure you send me a pic. I would love to see it! Also just some tips that I learned...if you are propagated a staghorn make sure that you cut down some of the pad backing. Just as long as it is at least an inch or two thick it should be fine. That will make it easier for you to attach onto the basket...also you have the option of using wire or fish line string. I opted for the fish line string because I didn't want it to be really visible. I didn't add any sphagnum moss to my backing because it was attached to the basket with the coconut liner that is filled with soil. Just as long as I water on a regular basis it should have more than enough needed moisture and water for the plant. I am wishing you the best in your project and I can't wait to see it! HAPPY GROWING! BIG HUGS AND MUCH LOVE TO YOU DEAR FRIEND FROM MELBOURNE!!!!

      Orchids for Dummies Thanks and I will try my best to join you...I am with my grandson and he is a handful so I got to keep a watchful eye on him. I would only mount a dendrobium keiki if it has a good amount of roots and at least about 4” long or longer. Remember to water daily to get the roots to establish and mount on the wood quicker. If you have more than one keiki I would mount them together to make a nice clump and when it grows out it will make a better and fuller display! I would also mount the den. with sphagnum moss to retain more water for a longer amount of time. Best of luck!

      @@PictureMaria1 I was just outside trying to determine how to help the remaining life on the staghorn... It's so huge that I can't even pick it up much less even put my arms around it but there is only about 6 or 7 fern leaves still green... I didn't have a 10-10-10 or 20-20-20 fertilizer on hand just flowering miracle grow so I sprayed it down with to that... I figured any nutrients would be great for now... My question is should I separate the good ferns or just leave the ball as it is for now... You can imagine the stress it's already been through since my husband did find it at the local dump... I am going to be totally ecstatic if I am able to save what is left of this staghorn... I can tell this once was a stunning beauty...

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  4 роки тому +2

      I would just leave it as is and give it extra waterings...if it still has green leaves then it still can be restored. They can grow pretty quickly and right over the dead areas...so it will also give it good space to grow. Now that spring is almost here it will have great conditions for it to thrive well. I really believe it will bounce back in no time and you will have yourself an awesome specimen of a plant. Best wishes and good luck! 👍

    The Asparagus fern may end up being a mistake, they have very aggressive root systems and tend to choke out the competition. A beautiful display, though.

      Thank you and yes that’s always a risk when planting a fern in any community of plants...they just don’t play well with others. Lucky for this arrangement it is separated in the basket and not actually mounted with the stag horn fern nor majority of plants. In time I do plan on changing it out. I will just have to keep a watchful eye over it.

      It is doing great. The stag horn ferns have multiplied and plants are still growing well. Some of the airplanes were blown down due to several rain storms and heavy winds but for the most part is is doing wonderful. I showed it in my live chat/garden tour but I do plan on doing an update on it.

    So after you have secured the fern to the outer basket and it remains there growing, does the root system adhere so much to the wire that it cannot be cut off? I just got my first staghorn fern FINALLY and it is in potting media; however, after acclimation, I want to have it grow the way you are showing here. However, I have NEVER seen the roots of this fern! I need any and all advice girl! Should I allow it in some potting media and put it inside the basket???

    Maria, don’t we need to know where the roots are? How do we know we have enough root on the piece?

    I've divided my staghorn fern to the point where I'm going to have to sacrifice some nodes to split it anymore. Its growing around itself and I dont know how to proceed.

    How do you take care of it watering? I feel like you need to douse staghorns - do you do that often? Ferns like water too so I suppose :)

    Very cool. Imagine having to pay for it outright at a flower shop. What do you think it would go for?

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  4 роки тому +2

      THANK YOU and yes staghorn ferns can get pretty pricey especially for the larger ones that have been grown for several years...and as a large statement arrangement as this I imagine it would go in the hundreds. Sharon said that she believed that this type of arrangement would more than likely go for about $600...and that is quite a pretty penny if I do say so myself. :)

      Put together a few and take them to the local Orchid dealer. Attach your name to it and up that by fifty percent. Go-Go Gadget Orchid Power!

      HA HA HA!!! YOU ARE TOO FUNNY!!! ...and you always come up with such incredible ideas! When I get enough of them I will cut them up and put together some smaller plant arrangements and call them MY Orchid Adventure Plant Chandeliers! That'll be neat! :) Thanks for the suggestion! STAY AWESOME MY FRIEND! :)

      Try a Mount and see what happens. A less expensive one. Say a $100 dollar mount. Bet you it sells. people be like; "Maria Young made this". You can Charge a tad extra due to your yt channel and noteriety. Just don't do what Martha tewart did and you should become a very successful Orchid Chic. I am serious. There is a market for high end Orchid Mounts. Weddings. Anniversaries. Birthdays. Maybe Daily Rentals. You could be Floridas Versace' orchid rental. The Gucci purse at a Wedding. No more working for someone else.

    No no no no .... This is a elk horn fern and not a strag horn ... Stag horns have much larger co-joint leaves .. Elk horns as this specimen are after their resemblance to an Elks horns ... Just google stag horns ... you will see the difference
