I love your vedos I have a 2003 mercury 15hp . And I'm going to put a carburetor ket in myself thanks to your videos I live in South Georgia wish you were closer by I'll let you do all my work
Hi, thanks for the video! Mine was a 1987 25 hp 2 stroke. The thermostat cover was more to the left side, and had 2 of the same size bolts. My flat gasket was a slightly different shape where it was cutout. There is one small spot where the lip of the flat side of the round rubber gasket isn't completely against the top center "head" of the thermostat. Either a tiny area is flipped underneath or a very small amount of the lip of the gasket is missing. With the flat gasket going over the top of the rubber one I would think it would still be Ok but I'm not sure. So no gasket sealer of any kind is needed with the flat gasket?
Thanks for the great videos and easy to follow along instructions :) is there a way to adjust the tiller throttle as you twist it as mine to be way out
I have 15 from 1988, it looks spotless under the cover. I was surprised that it didn't have a Tstat and looked like the housing had never been removed. Did they sometimes come without?
Is thread locker used on the cover bolt threads? Mine apparently had some but I can't locate any info that confirms it is required or what type. Thanks!
Are these older Mercurys self draining? I just wondered if there’s risk of the motor retaining water with it being thermostated when using in cold weather. Thanks
Yes as long as you keep it trimmed all the way down. I run mine in subfreezing weather all the time and never had a problem. I've seen some guys run it out of water on the trailer once they're done, but it is unnecessary and does more harm than good. They drain more completely than you would think.
Howdy there Stirling A big thank you and a.shout out to all that partake in your channel ..job well done.. . I will.start by saying these videos really help me with your step by step explanations and can't wait to see more videos in future.. specifically troubleshooting on the Merc 88 2banga 6horse.

Great video. I’m working on a 2000 8 hp 2 stroke. It would not pee at least not within 30-40 seconds. Had plenty of water in the bucket. Removed the lower unit. The impeller looks fine. Seams like it’s a leak in the pick up tube area under the power head. Have you ran into those issues. Advice will appreciated. Thank you
I would remove the thermostat and see if it pee’s. If it’s still not peeing I would say the key is probably missing from the impeller or the black guide on the top of the water pump is not matching up to the water tube when you’re putting the lower unit back on.
I checked for water in the thermostat housing. No water and no thermostat. I put some air thru the pick up tube and I can hear air leaking under the power head. I need to verify the coupler from the water pump. Thank you
Hey, do you know if there's any way to remove the bottom two bolts of the exhaust manifold and water jacket cover without removing the powerhead? . I have one bolt dripping a little bit of water. Hate to have to remove the whole powerhead for a $10 gasket. Motor is a 2001 25hp 2 stroke. Thanks great videos
Yeah typically pull the entire powerhead. It’s really not that hard I can pull a powerhead on one of these motors. I can do it in about 15 minutes. I need to make a video on it in the future.
@@martinmarine529 Hey Martin I bought it and did not have one in it. It pump water really hard at first and then it stop. I changed almost everything and check for something like dirt that was stuck but nothing. I even open the cover to the cylinder block and found nothing blocking. Water is not coming up to the cylinder block. I have followed your instruction to installing new water pump and impeller but still no water. I"m not sure if the thermostat missing has anything to do with it. It would run and get hot and you could not start it again.
i have a 1986 9.9hp mercury and it is peeing hot water. Any idea what it could be? i had changed the impeller last season and noticed the couple times i ran it, the water coming out was hot and there was quite a bit of smoke.
Just wanted to say thank you! I just bought a 94 mercury 9.9 and it only took me about 10 minutes to do this bc of your video, thanks!
Great video! I have a 15hp, will dig into it tomorrow, see if previous owner pulled out the thermostat. Thanks for making and posting the video 👍
Mercury 9.9 was not pering, just changed the thermostat now is peeing again.
Thank you very much for making this video👍

Hi Martin I am getting 85 psi on my pistons on a 1998 mariner 2 stroke .. is that bad news ? It runs fine .. thanks Glen
Just what I needed thanks! P.O. took out thermostat and didn't use anti seize, any tips on removing the broken end of that tiny bolt?
I have 15 from 1988, it looks spotless under the cover. I was surprised that it didn't have a Tstat and looked like the housing had never been removed. Did they sometimes come without?
Good stuff😊 thanks..

Is there a way you test if your thermostat is functioning properly?
Great vid Martin, thank you. I can't find my thermostat on my 1979 Merc 85 HP 850 Thunderbolt, UGH! do you have any idea where this thing is hidden???

How warm or hot should the water be coming out of tell tale?
You ever get a answer to this question?

Awesome Job thank you
very helpful thankyou. just put one in mine
New Sub here, great info. What kind of muffs are you using? And what Spark plugs do you recommend? Gap? Thanks
Hey Martin I replaced my impeller and water pump, check the hose at the top for clog and still no water pumping. Could you help me?
Try removing the thermostat and then running to see if it pee’s. If it does you need a new thermostat.

Hi i have a mercury 110 with thermostat and at idle there is no tell tail but as soon as i give it a bit of gas it pees is this normal? Thanks
No that is not normal. Sounds like you may have a leak somewhere.
