When I am dealing with outboard motors with fuel problems, I always swap out the entire fuel tank, and hoses from a good running engine before I tear into the engine. Seen so many times that a clog line, or a pin hole in the line cause so many problems. Easy to check and for me lots of the issues where the gas tank or lines.

One of your best!! Teaching the knowledge needed is always better than just doing it for someone. He will pass it along throughout his lifetime, just as you have. You have benefited countless people into the future by spending a bit of time mentoring. My grandfather used to always tell me the greatest gift you can give someone is your time, and you have just proved it to be true. Thanks again for a great video and wonderful life lesson.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE. I have often thought people with a small garage shop could learn these basic skills and make a little extra money on the side. In the suburbs people often pay $100+ an hour for such services. Learning how to do all the work yourself saves a ton and even better gives you control. I have found that with home remodeling. Knowledge is the key.
Seems like you have a good knowledge of the concepts for excellence problem solving. Kudos being a patient teacher.

And may I mention that power to weight ratio is awesome on two strokes and when properly tuned with good quality 2 stroke oil they are quite clean burning, and the simplicity is way better than 4 strokes and way cheaper to repair.

No cam belts to replace and on looking on outboard problems its all salt water in bottom end and over heating and Corrosion. The only decoke when on a Engine strip is the water jacket with the fured up corrosion and you would get that in a 4 stroke so for recreational use on a budget the Mercury 2 strokes are a good bet.

Good work Clark, I'm going to have to remember this when I try and get my 1965 or so 6 horse Johnson running. I do know it turns over and I likely ran all of the gas out of it last time I used it. Keep the good stuff coming Clark.

I have a terrible success rate of repairing carb problems, but after watching this video , I fortunately had the exact same problem as my 15hp merc outboard. Blocked jet with gunk from the fuel bowl. I originally thought it was an electrical problem because at WOT it would die like a light switch after a few minutes of running but will start instantly again. After checking and cleaning fuel filters, the boat died and would die shortly after. It feels good to have a boat running mint again. It was not a good feeling having a dead motor on the water! Thanks Emily and Clark.

That's what cruisers do, help out other cruisers and the community they live in. Best explanation I have seen on how a carburetor works. I have fixed, cursed at, yelled, threw away, replaced and repaired more than I cared to. Here in the states these days, if you leave this crappy gas in the bowl, it gets gunked up quick, even with fuel additives on my lawn mower, weed wacker and blower. I finally found just changing the carb is a lot easier on my soul, but not my budget...

I'm having trouble with my mercury 4 cylinder 2 stroke 85hp starting. Once it starts it runs well until you turn it off, then it's a pain to start again. I have zero experience with motors but this video gives me hope! I'm SO glad that he mentioned the part "if once the engine starts it runs good but it's a nightmare to start". Thanks

The bigger old mercs have multiple carbonators. If yours does it's just more of the same.
A good trick for 4 cylinders not firing in all 4. With an insolated glove pull off one spark plugs wire at a time. If the engine slowed that cylinder was firing. If it stays the same you found the one that was missing.

Laundry list of questions. I guess these are suggestions for videos. I am a curious person.
    1. Why don't you fish to get food as well? I see you make equipment, etc... but I don't see any reference to you fishing.
    2. Where do you register your boat for property tax purposes? You have to pay property taxes if its registered in the US right?
    3. How do your taxes work? Do you have to file taxes in multiple countries? What about Emily? She is technically working from another country on the boat right? Or is it just US taxes.
    4. What do you do at night when its dark? You don't have a TV right? Is there a public library in the Bahamas you can use to get books to read?
    5. How many hours a week do you spend on projects (work) on your boat vs. social time? It sounds like a full time job.
    6. You guys talk about your monthly expenses, but that does not include all the food you stocked up on. When you do your budget can you include the cost of the food you ate and other supplies you used up to get an idea of the real budget?
    7. How do you know a place is safe to leave your boat during Hurricane season? Hurricanes hit florida last year and can hit anywhere in the carribean? You can leave your boat somewhere and a hurricane hits it.
    8. Have you ever had problems with people breaking into your boat and looting stuff when you leave it for hurricane season or any other time? Any issues with crime on the water? You guys are kind of exposed out there if someone comes up in a small boat at night.
    9. Are all the cruisers Americans? Have you met any from other countries? Do you socialize much with the populations of the countries or mainly with cruisers?
    10. What do you do for the part of the year when you don't stay in your boat? Do you live in Emily's house? What do you do all day?

Seagull engines were built in the UK one cylinder two stroke easy simple electronics simple carburettor had duel airflow in case of water as Many were dropped in to the sea cleaned out and worked very strange how they were built. When they made rules against two strokes that was the end of the company sadly. They started from two HP right up to ten HP. No Reverse gear no twist grip it speed was like lawn mower using your thumb to stop was just taking the thumb switch all the way back to stop which may not work to stop it so put hand over the carb and turn off the fuel. A terrible dangerous idea to many is how to start the seagull. A pull knotted rope that can kick back also trap the rope. No modern pull start with recoil just rope on a pulley with a notch The Fuel tank only held two gallons of mixed fuel painted black as engine was silver. Its prop was designed to push anything as once started it was going there is no neutral or out of gear. They tested a WW2 seagull pulling via an aluminium boat two huge barges down the Thems river in the UK in the 1960s very slow but did it. Even though I am British the engines were built in to the 1980s to 1990 but not sure what happened after that as Two strokes were being phased out of water ways because of the pollution. I had one on a river boat 15 foot all wood one.

If I was looking for a 90 to 150 hp Outboard on a budget for a 15 ft 80s speedboat for some boating and the boat mainly on the Trailer surely a Mercury 6 Tower or 3 Cylinder Two stroke would be the best chose. But fantastic and informative thanks.

Good stuff Clark! I have a 2000 Tracker 25hp 2 stroke and it has been great for me to learn on and I had the same issue recently, starts great most the time plus idles fine then when getting up to speed it would putter out and die. Cleaned my fuel filter, got a new fuel hose which was deteriorating and used seafoam to help flush things out and so far so good, next step I would clean my carb and check my reed valves out of curiosity

    Good video guys.
Worth noting that when you reinstall a carburetor's bowl, one should be very careful not to put Any more torque than necessary on the bolt. This is because the bowl is often made of very thin metal and is easy to bend. The next time it's reinstalled (because there Will be a next time) it will be bent and not allow it to seal properly. Easy fix to bend it back. But easier still to avoid the problem altogether.

So, I’m the proud owner of a new to me, 9’ inflatable with inflatable deck and keel with a 2012 Mercury 5hp 2-stroke. My first tender for my 39’ sailboat. I sail on the Great Lakes and up to now have been harbour hopping as we cruise and now feel so liberated having the dingy and anchoring out. Bought all this used at an incredible price and am so happy with it as it runs flawlessly. So, my question: Do you have a recommendation for a light efficient 4-5 hp 4-stroke outboard? I’m looking to upgrade to an aluminum 8’ rib and want to keep things as light as possible. I like your idea of electronic ignition. If not available, what’s your next best suggestion?

    • @EmilyAndClark

No one makes a fuel injected motor that small. If I was to buy a motor that sized now I'd try the Suzuki. I like mine, it seems built well. They make the lightest offerings. The 6 weighs the same as the 5 so I'd get the 6. onlineoutboards.com/collections/outboard-motors/products/suzuki-6-hp-df6as2-outboard-motor
I've bought from this outfit before. Always a good experience and cheap/fast. Not a sponsor or anything, just who I recommend to friends. (Though I should hit them up for a sponsorship)
Tahatsu makes a good inexpensive motor as well.

Old real Mercury's were great. But they don't make engines anymore. They have become a marketing company that buys engines from Tahatsu. They are just selling their good name like Craftsman.
I'd have no problem with that except they add "features" to the Tahatsu that fail and make it hard to work on.

Just so you know the trick to taking these carbs off (6hp-most 20-25hp motors with the pull to prime) the 2 retaining screws that hold the primer assembly to the carb can stay on. Simply remove the tiny screw holding the primer plunger off completely, then remove the metal retaining ring on the inside. now you can slide the plunger completely off and thus remove the carb!

good video, yes, and you fixed it, but I would have liked to see you lay down a clean-ish white cloth on the boat deck (at least a paper towel) before you started on the carb. might prevent tiny wood slivers and other dirt from getting into the carb during re-assembly and helps to not lose the tiny parts. also for young mechanics out there... might as well spray a lot of carb cleaner all thru that carb and its other jets since you have it right there in your hand.

Great video! I have that exact outboard, and I'll be testing it out on the lake on my tiny MacGregor 22 this weekend. (I mean I know it works, as I did the barrel test for almost an hour and it was running smooth) We'll see how bad fuel efficiency is compared to 4-cycle Honda. Thanks for that video, I'm a bit more confident I can troubleshoot some more issues if they arise.

So an update: after putting the boat in the water with that Mercury attached, after multiple turns I started it on a choke, had it on it for about two minutes after which I pushed it back in. That's when the motor died and couldn't be restarted. Tried for about 10 minutes, gave up and swapped with my trusted 7.5 Honda 4-cycle that I brought as a backup. While on choke Mercury was shaking pretty bad, smoking and even releasing some oil into lake, which made me even more encouraged to put it back on the truck. All in all, I'll be troubleshooting it in the upcoming weeks to see if maybe it has to do with those two plates that are supposed to close and maybe are not closing completely, or maybe throttle isn't adjusted properly.

I'd check the spark plugs first. Sounds like it was only firing on one. Oil in the water on a two stroke is unburned fuel as they don't have crank oil to leak.
Could be compression, electrical or just a fouled plug. I hope it's the plug and I bet it's the lower one. Clark

Oh. With that procedure working it seems like your low speed fuel circuit in the carb is gummed up. Take it apart and clean it thoroughly paying special attention to the needle valve and area around it.

I have a Yamaha, 8hp 4-stroke - Do you happen to know if it is possible to replace the original 8Hp carburetor with the larger 9.9hp carburetor? Could definitely use the extra oomph and love the idea of having a spare carburetor around if ever needed. Cheers!

Looks like they are also the same motors. Big hint is they have the same displacement and are described in the same section of the website.
I've never had the two both apart at the same time but I'd bet money the bigger carb will fit and function.
Also I like the Yamaha. Don't see many as they work without problems. Clean design, easy to work on. I like that their carb has an accelerator pump. Not necessarily but nice touch. Tells me they probably don't cut corners in other places.

Ethanol in the fuel makes the needle valve seat (usually some rubber-like compound) swell and restricts free movement of that needle valve. Best practice is to order a carb rebuild kit (pretty cheap, usually) and it will have a replacement needle valve and seat (among all the other gaskets and rings). Cleaning it on the deck of your boat is only a short term fix. But, great video. Thanks!

    • @EmilyAndClark
      @EmilyAndClark  4 роки тому

No worries. You have a bit of gunge in the floats needle valve. Fuel is too high in the bowl so it's running too rich. Just take the carb off and clean it up. The video will help. It's the opposite problem this engine had but it's common. You can hear me talking about it when I'm diagnosing. You will find that the needle just needs a cleaning so it will seal again and you will be good to go. Worst case is you will need a new needle valve and maybe seals as it's an older model and things can deteriorate with time.
I forget does that year 50 have one carb or two?
I'd take some time to make sure the tank and lines are clean. If it's been a while since she has run there is likely crap in there that will do this again.

Instead of purchasing a $138 kit all you need to do is take a grease fitting, one that fits a typical grease gun, use a hack saw to cut it open and voila! A new check ball that mates perfectly with the spring and seal in the primer/injector (float bowl housing). After installing the new grease fitting check ball, spring and 11mm 'bolt' my crappy running 9.9 now runs like new and it cost me nothing!

That's one happy Dan! Reading though the comments I'm guessing my 1998 Mercury 9.9 2-stroke is a Tohatsu product? It idle's rough but runs great at top speed. The main issue is it doesn't accelerate smoothly, stutters like a misfire right up until it reaches the upper RPM ranges. All primary and secondary ignition components were replaced before I bought it. As well the float was filled with fuel so they replaced it with an aftermarket part that very closely matched height wise but not exact. Would that small difference be the likely cause of symptoms described above? Poor low end performance, lack of smooth acceleration? Other than that the thing works like a champ for our fishing expeditions on the lake!

    • @EmilyAndClark
      @EmilyAndClark  3 роки тому

Well sounds like it's running lean.
Yes if the float is floating at the wrong fuel height that would cause what you see. Probably can be adjusted by bending something or adding weight. You could run a test with some pennies taped on but if it works hot glue them as the tape won't last but a few minutes in the gas.
But first I'd make sure the needle valve is set right and the low speed passages are really clean.

I used ONLY Gasoline in the motor. It clearly states 100/1 on the motor. I accept my ignorance and only want possible direction on what I can do. What's done is done, and just as life, it's a learning game, and I am just learning about this boat and Motor.
Either way, there we a Little bit of gasoline/oil mix in the gas tank. Barely anything. I filled it back up with regular unleaded gasoline. 😔. I rode the boat motor about an hour and a half, not exactly consistently. Over about a four hour period. It would be a tackle to get running, but once started, ran what seemed well. Ran for maybe 20 mins each time, then stopped to fish, and cut it off.
... never could get it to start again after the last time I cut it off. Damage must have been done.
I'm curious if anyone knows of any steps I can do to see what all is actually damaged, if anything can be repaired, etc.. any help.
I'm already in the thought to that the motor is done.
I have not tried to run it since I came back. I don't know if I should create the mixture and try to run it w/ 100/1 or if I should drain the motor, add more oil than recommended.. or what.
Any advice, comments, help and ridicule are accepted. :)

I hope you get other advice here but since this is an older video without much traffic anymore I'll put my 2 cents in.
First off running without oil just causes more ware. ie. No oil = higher friction. Don't double oil it now or anything, as you say the damage is done.
What was the history of the motor? If it was hard starting before it might have others issues. That one way valve I talk about causes starting issues. Since it's so easy I'd clean the carb first because it's so easy and low risk. You might have just got some gunge in it from what was in the old tank. Likely if the motor hadn't been run in a while. Just do what I did in the video first. If it runs with squirting fuel you can breath easy and just clean the carb.
But to the possible bigger problem. First off running without oil causes ware and heat. The ware is permanent but the heat goes away. So, check it and see if it starts better now. I don't think you should destroy a motor in just an hour. Though you took years off its life. If it didn't get better on its own I'd want to check the compression. If it's low you need a ring job. Not the end of the world. The hardest part is getting the motor apart without breaking corroded bolts. Go slow and unscrew a bit then screw back in till they feel free.
All in all it's not destroyed I'm sure. These are tough machines.

You didn't check the fuel filter. This is a common issue that can save a lot of hassle. Definitely check the filter before pulling the engine apart.

Fuel filter is a slightly different symptom. This engine ran well at all power levels and just died. Fuel filter problems start showing as loss of power after prolonged high power operation and can be temporarily improved by squeezing the bulb.

Why not check the fuel filter first?

Because that has a different symptom when it fails. It tends to run fine for a while and fail at full throttle. Also the bulb feels different when it's the problem.

I get the impression you aren't too fond of Mercury. There are a lot of people out there that like them.

Mercury no longer makes small motors. They are Tahatsus that cost more and have additions that fail a lot and make them hard to work on.
Why not just buy the Tahatsu. Or better yet the new Suzuki fuel injection motors. Even better.
