Thank you for demonstrating how to make the bearing carrier removal tool. I have a 1989 Mariner 15 HP that needs the prop shaft seals and my set up resembles what your's is. I'll now be able to make my own tool.
The spanner wrench you made was amazing…! The gear in the front of the housing is the foward gear! The one in the back towards the prop is the reverse gear
I found a pre-owned tool on e-bay for $70.00. I will use it then re-sell it for what I originally paid for it. My Mercury 9.9 is a 1995 model. It is in pristine condition and has never been apart. (Found it at an estate sale). My propeller assembly was really in there! Even with the Mercury tool and a breaker bar, it took a lot of pressure to loosen. Not sure if the DYI drainpipe tool would have not collapsed during removal.
Great detailed video. Watch drilling the copper pipe with the drill in your hand and one slip and your fingers become shredded skin! I am doing the lower unit on my 94 25 hp merc. Blew a bearing last night.
Hey Fred, I just came across your video in the exact time I’m repairing my 1996 Merc 9.9. I’ve been wondering how I was going to get the inner retainer out from the prop shaft, and your idea was fantastic!! Thanks so much for your time and efforts. I’m off to the hardware store this morning to get those parts you mentioned. FYI, I do have a real hacksaw in my shop. Lol👍👊 Thank you.
Sometimes that shaft needs a double seal if one wont hold a pressure test. This most likely the reason you had a leak. This comes from dry starting in gear. Always start in neutral and only engage the drive when water is peeing. People who start then put it in gear are turning that shaft on dry seals and they wear much faster.
He Fred, very wel done, love that tool I made on not as elaborate but it worked thanks. On thing I missed is hpw did you get the seal out of the small end (prop end)of the shaft/spindel housing?
Hi fred, what is the inner and outer diameter of the bearing carrier removal tool that you made? It is a very informative video. Love it. I have the same engine where the reverse gear is not working. I want to see what is going on on the inside.
It's actually up north at the moment but it was either 1.25 or 1.5" drain pipe. Someone else said they just modified an electric water heater 'element removal tool' - which seem to also be readily available...
I used to work at the Via Rail train station in Kitchener many years ago. The only station that anouced the trains arriving in German, English and French.
Hi I’m curious, I have the same motor and just rebuilt my lower unit, however there’s not much force going into reverse? Could this be a shift linkage adjustment issue?
I'm no mechanic but I would think it either goes into reverse or it doesn't. Anything in between would result in grinding vs lack of power.. Is it grinding? Or is there just very little power in revers?
With the lower unit off, it should want to pop into forward when you even so much as look at it funny. Neutral is just barely detented, and reverse is spring loaded. You should be able to shift it into reverse with pliers, and it should try to pop back into Neutral/forward when you let go.

I saw someone else had used a slightly modified Water Heater Element Wrench to turn out that bearing carrier...
Great video, helped me out a lot!
Ottimo complimenti molto bravo

Is this the same process for the 88?
Sorry, I wouldn't know..

Doesn’t seem to be grinding just low power on reverse
@@ryanbasden4669 hmm, only thing I could imagine is the tilt lock switch wasn't set properly and the motor is lifting up when going in reverse..
