I really want to thank you for taking the time to make this video. I love to work on my own motor but I'll admit the service manual alone leaves a lot of steps out. You did a great job of walking each step through making the job so understandable and easy even for a guy like me with 10 thumbs. You also saved me a lot of money and time off the water by not having to take the motor to the dealer for repair. I want to thank you again.
If I may, upon disassembly, counting those turns on the stepped guide at the base of the shifting rod is a lot more accurate if you count while screwing the guide IN until it bottoms. Upon reassembly, screw the guide all the way, then unscrew it the number of turns you counted at disassembly. Regards !
Been almost 2 years since you did this video and and it's just as informative as the day you made it. THANK YOU SIR for taking time to share your knowledge and expertise. I feel confident by following your video I will be able to swap my parts out and have everything come out perfect. Little tips like counting the threads when putting the shifting rod back together can make all the difference in the world between success and failure. You explained things in a way that I didn't feel like I was being talked down to which also goes a very long ways. Once again, Thank You Sir!
Hi Martin. Watching u from France. I just bought a 9.9 mercury 2strokes, and your video just helped me a lot for my first steps with my new engine. Thanks a lot.
Thank you for taking your time and doing that slowly. And for getting the crayons out for a dummy like me. Lol. You’ve done a very good job my friend….. I bought a motor from a guy that was not pumping water. He said he put a new water pump in it. I bought the kit that you recommended, and put it in. It’s pumps water like a water hose…. God bless you my friend
FINALLY.. somebody doing videos on these great little motors, please keep them comming, I have worked on several of them, always something someone else does different helps, please keep the videos comming, thank you..
I'm glad I found your video. I've got mine apart and the shift rod just came out with the plastic manifold. Thought I broke something. Mine has a two piece shift rod with a coupler and lock nut about five inches from the entry to the lower unit. Glad it just comes out and will go back in with not too much trouble. Also great to see which way the little angled piece at the end of the rod goes. Saving the video for later if I get stuck. Thanks for taking the time to produce a very informative and helpful video.
Gonna tackle this job tomorrow, thanks! I do have another problem though. I have a lot of play between the engine and the motor mounting bracket, at full throttle the motor shakes all over, and ideas how to fix this?
Thanks Daniel 😮 I'm way past that stage now my problem now is that I cant seem to get it into forward gear correctly. I've removed the lower unit again because I thought the flywheel was preventing me from getting into forward but now that I have it apart again it's still the same , I cant even remember now which way the end of the shift rod was facing when I took it apart or does this only face the same way as in the video
The mercury diagram indicates using an RTV sealant on the lower housing block. Is it necessary? You didn't put any on your waterpump repair? Loved the video. Thanks. Rick
Hello, I was wondering what the purpose of the 2 clear gaskets are? You put a clear gasket, then key, then impeller, and then another clear gasket. We lost one of those and was wondering if I can just cut one out of some plastic?
Thank you so much for the video. I will follow it step by step when i do mine. In the service manual i see it says to add sealant but you did not. Is it necessary and where does the sealant go?

my kit with same p/n had an extra very small flat washer. Perhaps 1/4" diameter. Didn't look metal, was a hard composite material. Dark gray in color. Can't find where it is used anywhere. BTW, its exactly the right size for the bolt that holds the clamp on the shift rod that activates the lever to allow tilt. Thoughts? Second, the manual calls for some silicone at the flat end of the plastic base. Do you do that?
So after watching your video i went at my own and after an hour the job would have been done, but after another hour or 2 I still cant get the shaft to pop into place . Ive turned the flywheel by hand but still no joy .What am I doing wrong

Thanks for the great instructions. When I assembled everything back I couldn’t put the tab of a shaftpin. Ik looks like there is no more a spot to click it on. Any idea what did I do wrong?
I’m kind of confused about what you’re saying. So if the pin is not lining up you can turn the tiller handle to allow it to line up. If you’re talking about when you go to snap the clip and there’s no spot for it to clip into then you need to remove this rubber cover from the opposite side of the bottom cowling. You will see what looks like a silver nut just push on it and it will move that whole assembly back over.
@@martinmarine529 Tiller handle is lined up and I can put a pin in it. My problem is indeed that there is no spot to clip into anymore. I just did one for a customer same problem the impeller was made in China and just a little to thick I actually laid it on the bench over a sheet of sandpaper and worked it till it fit right if your driveshaft gets real hard to turn after tightening the housing you may have the same problem,
When I install the impeller housing down on top of the impeller, it turns nice and free until I snug the bolts down. It then becomes impossible to turn by hand. I did this rebuild and the impeller spun around the keyway and was ruined and I feel it’s binding somehow after the housing is tightened down. White spacers are used along with a little grease on assembly. I’m almost at my wits end with this thing.
What is the actual setting for the length of the shift shaft? I purchased a lower unit completely disassembled so I wasn't able to count the turns. I can't find the factory settings for that end fitting. Please help anyone!!!

I’m almost at my wits end with this thing.
my circlip is missing do I really need it ? because forward and reverse was working fine before I pulled it apart
If you’re talking about the one on the shift rod yes you definitely need it.
What is the actual setting for the length of the shift shaft? I purchased a lower unit completely disassembled so I wasn't able to count the turns. I can't find the factory settings for that end fitting. Please help anyone!!!
