I guess all or mostly negative critics are from America. I was not the perfect movie, but many American movie on WWII should never have been on the big screen. I was delightful to see David Niven, Trevor Howard, Patrick Macnee, Gregory Peck, Roger Moore and many more. What you have missed is that it was a dramatic re-enactment of a true event, possibly even more implausible in it's audacity than this story-line with the actual photos of the leading individuals in the movie's end credits.
SOOOOOOOOOOOO many world class actors from all over the world. Even the Goa'n music was authentic. I lived 7 years in Goa. Lots of memories. Jai Hind. Jai Goa.
A true story, codenamed "Operation Creek". But the film contains some inaccuracies. In fact the movie was a work of fiction based on an actual event. In the real raid "Captain" Gavin Stewart was in fact a Colonel, not a Captain. Also there were no casualties among any of the British personnel, unlike in the movie. In the real raid, they did not blow the ships up with Limpet mines but the Germans scuttled their own ships. Unlike in the movie, dozens of Germans were not killed. The actual German death toll was four. The rest swam ashore. The lone woman Nazi agent was in reality not a lone woman, but was a Gestapo couple codenamed "Trompeta" or Trumpet. In fact Trompeta wasn't actually her codename. It was her male partners/husbands codename. She was only assisting him. In the real life incident, she was not killed by Stewart as depicted in the movie, but both her and her partner were captured during the raid and later interrogated by British Intelligence. Interestingly, there is no surviving records of her or her partner. No trace exists today of her. Even though she was spying on British shipping leaving port for German U-Boats,. They couldn't be legally tried and executed as spies, due to the fact they were illegally abducted operating in the neutral Portuguese Territory of Goa, and not within British jurisdiction. Therefore they hadn't committed any espionage related offences under British law. They couldn't be legally interned in a PoW camp either. And at the same time, because they were spies they couldn't let them go so they could continue working for the Nazis against the Allies. All of which presents the little matter of what to do with them. So it would seem British Military Intelligence found another way to solve the problem of what to do with her and her partner. So, lets just say that war is a dirty business and the Intelligence game is as filthy as it gets. Rules get broken and when that happens you just don't keep any records. Hence, no trace of them.
Regarding the couple called Trompeta, "Just be glad that individuals exist who are prepared to perform bad acts which allow you to sleep peacefully at night".

On the front, I have a patch which says "We Do BAD Things to BAD People." When the circumstance dictate, it is necessary to do bad things to bad people, if it will prevent them from doing bad things to friendly people.
What a joy to see David Niven and Gregory Peck working together again. They seem to really enjoy acting together, friendly gestures are so natural. Roger Moore seemed out of sorts beside them.
Giving elderly actors employment, which is exactly what happened in this, historically. *Deadly* lady. Basic Instinct. Excellent, entertaining movie. 4 German survivors of the ships helped out with technical assistance for the film.
Judging by some of the comments some people are taking this film far too seriously. To be watched with tongue very firmly in the cheek and then you'll enjoy it. Besides it's based on actual events

Yes but even decades after the war he had to omit most of his war service. Its almost 80 years ago now, you'd think the MOD would let the full story come out. Niven never even mentioned the high decorations he had earned, either. By the way, he almost drowned - the fishing boat sinking scene - making the Guns of Navarone, it's a harrowing story. Peck, Quinn, Darren as well almost died.

They did their best with some geriatric old war heroes. It's hard to compare with the fast paced, karate-spy-bodybuilder movies we have now days. Today the spy has to be a pro-wrestler, have abs, look sweet for the ladies and keep a hidden room full of spy equipment. Satellite connections, silencers, submachine guns, and grenades are all in the modern spy kit and he's got to be a jiu jitsu master. Back then the plot was more important than the kung fu.

There were extremely few TVs at the time and the only news most of us got was either from listening to a battery powered radio or at the local theater on the weekends. Btw...the battery that powered the radio was about the size of a modern automobile battery, or possibly larger, while the radio was more the size of the old timey juke box that offered to play records for 5 cents each or 6 for a quarter! Peck convincingly played a British officer in the Guns of Navarone and Horatio Hornblower. Odd things is that he doesn't really alter his accent. He seems to make it convincing by force of character.
Love to see old English movies that are shot in India, absolutely delighted always to see how it was under the Raj. I go back, once in a while to watch THE JEWEL IN THE CROWN to see how it was during grandfather’s time. He was in the British Indian Army and retired from the Indian Army. My father too retired from the Indian Army. The closest I got to the ‘Army’ attached to my name was when i studied in Army School’s!😅

This isn't just a silly Anglo American production, allmost all of it happened.When the light horse sunk the german ship there were 2 Italian ships in the harbour the decks full of chickens and pigs they were so worried they scuttled both and the harbour was full of swimming livestock.When they kidnapped trumpeter they had to take his wife along as well.And yes the whorehouses were free for a week.All done by a group of unfit British pensioners.There is a novel and various utube docks around.Churchill and Fleming were involved in the first sas/soe training there in India.And there was no woman spy thats the producers turning this into a james bond film.

The institutional brutality of the Japanese who tortured and worked POWs, to death, or the methodical mass murder by the Germans. And whilst we're at let's not forget the war crimes carried out by the Russians who also murdered and raped their way across Eastern Europe.

I think this predates his James Bond stint. He was younger and more believable in the role here.

The institutional brutality of the Japanese who tortured and worked POWs, to death, or the methodical mass murder by the Germans. And whilst we're at let's not forget the war crimes carried out by the Russians who also murdered and raped their way across Eastern Europe.
