- Thanks for watching my review and demo of the Schecter Damien Platinum 9 9-string. This beast has a 30 inch baritone scale length for extra clarity on those low notes, EMG 909 pickups and many more great features! Let me know what your thoughts are on this guitar!

You never cease to amaze me with your demo tracks - such excellent riffage and mix. You managed to convince me that a 9 strings guitar isn't just a gimmick.
Thanks so much!
That’s exactly what I thought
my left hand hurts looking at it
Not gonna lie, I'm not a fan of 7 string guitars, let alone extended range instruments of 8 and 9, but I'm impressed by what you did here, creativity has no boundaries and as long as a tool serves a purpose and inspires someone to play or create something then it's fine. Also I didn't expect such clarity and definition from Engl ! Reminds me a bit of DAR Amplifaction Future Breed Machines
The note definition is great on that thing! It seems with that scale length, you can get clarity on the low notes without needing to thin out anything amp wise. Super cool! Awesome job dude!
Well done on getting tight and clear enough tones without it being icepicky midrange hell, like too many 9 (and even 8) string tones I've heard. Great demo overall!
Schecter have often been slightly ahead of the competition when it has come to extra-stringed guitars and longer scale length. Their 7 stringers going back years were often slightly longer scale than the conventional models. Ditto for their 8 stringers and now the 9 stringer on excellent display.
The demos were great and both amps handled that low end tightly. The particular voicing on the Fireball was phenomenal. I am curious to see how the Invective and the Diavlo could do with this axe as they’re known for their tighter outputs and you have demonstrated the Diavlo with a 9 stringer in the past.
Gotta say, they pulled off the longer scale and didn't make it look awkward long. It looks damn good.
Schecter’s 8 strings were 25.5” for years. It’s only been in the last few years they’ve figured that out.
@@jakemartin5569 I'm not aware of this, but it's very strange if this was indeed the case. Even the Hellraiser V 7 string and C7 standards, from 2009, had 26.5" scale necks. As did the Jeff Loomis 7 string V model. The Schecter Omen 8 string from 2010, which was widely distributed as one of their main 8 string offerings, also had a 26.5" scale neck. Then they had the limited run for the Devil 8 that had the same scale neck.
@@kadestorm Even if I misremembered the 26.5 scale being 25.5, 26.5 is way too short for an 8. Schecter has made some great ERGs as of late, but their early offerings left a lot to be desired when it came to scale lengths and necks.
@@jakemartin5569 You may well be remembering correctly. I was puzzled by that detail because it ran contrary to many mass produced Schecter guitars I had used and seen. On the specific topic of appropriate scale length, 26.5” could be considered a bit short for an 8 stringer, but back then, few competing brands were doing that much better. Ibanez had quite a few 8 stringers on offer then, with many of them being around 27”, including the Fredrick Thordendal signature model. Even recent Solar 8 string models on average are around 27”. This goes back to my original comment and response that on balance, Schecter and Agile have remained a bit ahead of the completion when it comes to the scale length of extended range guitars going back a longer time period.
you have an unbelievable ear for tone and mixing. all your music sounds super good!
Thank you!
Very clear tone for a 9 string! Well done. That jam was 🔥🔥🔥 too!
So glad I bought one of these early on! It's one of the best guitars I've ever played, so well made, and for the price! Inspiring video, thank you!!
VERY impressed by the clean sound. Usually in my experience that's where 7+ string guitars lack in versatility. I really think you get a lot of quality for the price on Schecters.
Great demos! Schecter owes you for making it sound so great!
Out of everyone I've seen on UA-cam, you are the absolute best advocate and demonstrator of what's possible with these 8 and 9 string instruments. I have this same guitar and am thinking about ordering the same neck illusions fretboard sticker set.
Dude sounds awesome as always. I have one request : release an album with all of your video riffage. I love it so much
Sounds good brother , nice playing. I just ordered the Damien 6 string. Not ready for a 9 , but appreciate the demo!🤘🎸
Damn, John, you are definitely a quality player with amazing sounds. Holy crap! You make that 9 string Schecter sound so devastating through the Engl!!!
Will definitely be saving for this guitar! Can never go wrong with Schecter 🤘🤘🤘
Great reviews, great riffs, great mixes. This channel never dissapoints
Thanks!
After watching your vids, I finally pulled the trigger and ordered one! It came in yesterday, and I absolutely love it. The tone is so snappy from the 30” scale and the low C# string is incredibly clear and articulate. I’m blown away. Even alternating between the open C# string and the first fret is crystal clear.
You’re right by the way, the neck is very thin and very playable, and not too wide. I’ve been playing eight-strings for years, and the transition so far even after 24 hours has been pretty manageable. So inspiring! I’ve contacted Schecter about a case suggestion, waiting to hear back.. otherwise, yeah!
Awesome!
@@SonicDriveStudio Thank you! Any luck with storing it in a case/replacing strings?
@@Blacklight_Music one word: Elixir
@@SonicDriveStudio I’ve been trying to get replacements, and elixir doesn’t make strings in those gauges, especially not .080 or .100. Any more info?
@@Blacklight_Music .95 bass string
Awesome guitar, never feel the need to a 6+ guitar but its growing on me. And you reached the 36.000 subs, congrats!
Thanks! Yeah I reached that number yesterday, which was great!
This guitar is Massive!! I tried it out yesterday and it is psychotically great!
I had the 7 string version of this guitar and I loved it! Only thing was I'm a beginner guitar player and 7 strings was too much for me. I've since then sold it on Reverb and now I want the 6 string version. I honestly like the bats, adds a dark/ evil/ menacing/ vampiric theme that most people find cliche and gimmicky but I think it's a great touch for Black Metal guys like me. 🦇🤘🏼🦇
Duuude, loved this. Never thought I’d want to play 9 string. Wow!
It's sooooo much fun!
Awesome review, dope song as well!
Sounds great, Jon! I’m glad to see that you reached 36K for your birthday!
Thanks Seth!
Best instrument I've ever purchased. All thanks to you and this video
Awesome!
Men you are a beast yourself.. what a great demo!!!!!!!
Glad you got one of these. The only negative to me is the inlays, and the body wood. If I'd rather have no inlays, and basswood, alder, or swampash. But I have a 9 string agile that is pretty much this and still love it!
Sick songs, sick tones and sick guitar!!!!
What a beautiful neck transition
Bought mine today…can’t wait for it to arrive!!!
Awesome!
That opening track was one of your best.
Really helpful, I'm currently looking for a 9 string guitar and I think this might be it. I would've loved if you would've used the 6505 to see how they sound together. But great work, and amazing sound.
The bass on the first demo was soo goodddd
So deep! Sounds great.
And the low end is still tight...😎🤘
I love the low grind of these things.
Sick amazing riffing🤘
The EMGs were the sound of the Animals as Leaders ST and your clean tone is the same, which is cool. I had the 808 in my Iron Label, but I hated them. This guitar sounds really good though.
Gonna have to get one of these...
One thing that's turned me away from 9 strings is the tones but this won me over, it sounds fucking great 🤘
dang simply amazing!
I like the guitar, looks and sounds good.
Thank you for the great review! How does the 09 gauge top string feels? I know some people complain about string breaking on the 30" as well as 28" scale lenght and that scares me a lot. Fantastic job as always, have a nice day!
This, EMG 909x pickups, and a custom .095-.008 set from StringJoy would probably be incredible.
Nice demo! I have a c7 blackjack from Schecter, which I bought years ago. Still my favourite guitar, they really make great stuff. But question, how does the guitar feel on the high strings, does it have tension issues? I have a fanned fretted 8-string, and I wouldn't really want it regular. So also on a 9-string I think I would prefer a fanned fretted.
Insane riffage. So inspiring.
I totally agree
Best track you've recorded and heavy af!
it sounds massive Jon, huge !! oh, by the way, could you please share your exact settings on the RedSeven Amp Central please ?
I have a Damien Platinum 6 and 7. I was tempted to sell my Elite 8 and replace it with a Damien Platinum 8. I've loved the cheesy edge of the bat inlays ever since the original line of Damien guitars in 2007. The only thing keeping me from getting a Platinum 9 is how small my hands are and how easy it may or may not be to find replacement 9 string sets.
Well god damn, that's a fucking godzilla-sized song you wrote there. Almost a shame to be wasted on just a UA-cam video of a guitar review! If that was a full song by a band, I'd be in love with it. I love you how also understood the range of the guitar and didn't just treat it as a low chugga chugga thing. You used the breadth of what this offers.
That first song actually will be a full band song with vocals and real drums! Soon! New project coming up
Oh please, cuz that was spectacular!
The clean riff was beautiful as well, reminded me of Deftones.
Amazing vid. Love the sounds. Maybe I'll get an 8 or 9 one day...
Just curious, about those amps behind you, do you... perhaps own all of them?
Thanks! Yup, all my amps
I love your channel and man this sounds thiccccccccccccccccccc
Stop it John your making us look bad! Lol Nice job bro!
I've got the 8 string version of the Damien Platinum and hoooooweee it feels absolutely unreal. I did swap the pickups to a Seymour Duncan Pegasus/Sentient set - fair warning to anyone that these guitars do NOT have a bridge ground nor a routing for one, so you'll have to do one yourself. But overall, the platinums are just astoundingly good instruments. Great demo as always!
That scale length is monstrous
As someone who mostly plays bass and feels my 7 string guitar is small when I make the switch...I really feel like getting this 9 strings.
SSSIIICK!!!!! You have totally changed my mind and view against 8 or 9 string guitars.
Awesome!
Hi Jon! Can you walk us through how you got the bass tone in that demo?
I own a few different flavors of schecter guitars and honestly they have all been top notch. Would love to buy one of these beasts but no websites seem to have any listed?
Which elixir set do you use? Have you tried them all? I want to give one of them a try since I have a lot of guitars right now and not tons of time to play every week.
what kind of cab set up were you using? sounds sick man!
What do you use for strings? I've read Ernie Ball's 9 string set taper before the nut on the damien's 30 scale length
This is awesome! Sick guitar and track!! How come you switched from Ownhammer to York IRs?
Idk about Jon but for me York feel waaaay real. Thanks to Jon they have become my go-to
@@oscarcastellon7398 interesting... I'll have to look in to them more. Jon's Ownhammer videos were the reason I even bought them lol. I'll have to see if he has York ones.
@@SRC1022 check out their Orange and Zilla packs for high gain and the Princeton 1x10 for cleans is life itself
@@oscarcastellon7398 cool, will do. I saw they also have a 1 dollar mesa 2x12 to try them out
can you drop the helix tones you used for this? I have this guitar but never got it to sound this good.
Any suggestions on a case for it? I called Schecter directly and they didn't have one they could recommend. Any help is appreciated.
Does anyone know if this is an older model despite that this video is only 7 months old? I can’t find this guitar ANYWHERE.
I got it, I have it tuned to A, E, A, E, A.. and it's a little difficult to mix those chugs
Where can I buy the string can someone put a link it says it uses 009 - 097 but I can't find any wtf??
Brutal, brutal, brutal, brutal, brutal 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
The only Damien I really liked was the Halloween run Drum City Guitarland did. Orange with a maple board and pearl bats.
Which one do you like more? The Schecter or your M80M.
How tense are the high strings?
Fantastic I love her...
There's a lot to love :)
You are... unbelievable!!!
any neck dive with this guitar ?
Interesting sounds can be made using this kind of weaponry and witchcraft. But, what is the point of going so low ? What can bass or synth do in a mix where guitar is in 5 string bass teritory ? I am just curious and it is the reason I ask the question.
Because I like how it sounds. It's that simple.
Believe it or not, the bass is still necessary since it provides frequencies that not even these guitars have.
Even though they're playing the same notes.
Just hipass the guitars and let the bass handle the low end.
I used to be skeptical too until I mixed a song like this.
How bout a tutorial on that bass tone?
Is this good for a beginner? I have a squire but it's not djenting
If you want a 9 string, go for it! There are no rules!
That Engl is a fucking beast.
Could use a few more strings 😁 seriously that sounds brutal and looks just right. I’m not gonna go beyond seven strings myself though
I prefer the isolated tracks, i can hear the differences better.
Guitar is good ,but hard to find where to buy.
I have the 7-String and love it to death
7 is too many for this Ol' fart Gen X'er. 9 lives it is for you my friend, Chug away! Sounds awesome!
It's not for everyone but man, do I love it! :)
How on earth do you tune it I have trouble with finding a good tune for my 7 string
C# F# B and the regular 6
You sold this guitar to me once you said they actually used it in doom
Can you play that guitar through a regular guitar amp? Do you have to have a baritone/bass type of amp??
As far as i know, the fireball is a normal/regular amp
So is the Kraken
I feel that this guitar with the Dirty Tree and a Recto or Uberschall could get to the roof
That's worth a video! :)
@@SonicDriveStudio im guessing is gonna get nasty 😎
@@oscarcastellon7398 I hope he has a good builder on call cause he'll be leveling his studio.
At 9:57 and 11:23, the clean tones demo, what is that song?
All my own music
@@SonicDriveStudio It's very good!! You should put it out here as a full song. It's good enough to not have lyrics.
On a second thought, you should offer it in both forms and see what the people like best. One with lyrics and one purely instrumental. Then plan to sell both versions as part of an album via download, also offering single song purchases. I'd at least buy that song, and probably more if I liked the album.
You should do an Agile 10 string next
I honestly think that for me personally 9 is the limit. Not saying 10s can't work for others, but for me this is enough haha
So did Meshugga call you yet?
Why are multiscale 9 string guitars so rare?
Afaik only Legator makes 9 strings with multiscale fretboards. Schecter and Ibanez 9 strings aren't multiscale plus they're only 28", what's up with that?
Which is better? This or your Ibanez RG9?
This. I talk about that in the video in a bit more detail
I hear great things about Schecters. I just wish I didn't hate their aesthetics.
I like the bats tbh. its different
Now im wanting a 9 string lol
How many strings are too many?
To me i think that 9 would be the limit, more than that even my hand size wouldn't be working
Wow
And people say you can't get a good tone out of emgs tuned that low
Low string sounds like a bass lol, killer tones tho!!
