  • Thanks for watching my comparison of 2 8-string and 2 9-string guitars! Let's see how they differ in sound because of their construction, scale-length and pickups! I used my ENGL Fireball 100 for the tones! The guitars that are featured in this video are:
    - ESP LTD SC-608B 8-String Baritone (Stephen Carpenter Deftones)
    - Ibanez M80M 8-String Meshuggah Signature
    - Ibanez RGIR9FME 9-String Iron Label

    The m80m is absolutely unbeatable. Those Lundgrens are amazing. It wipes the floor with the LTD. The 9's were more even, but the Schecter sounds clearer with it's extra scale lenght.

    I preferred the LTD. The others sounded more bass like. The LTD still sounded like a guitar frequency wise. Had more mids, maybe due to the shorter scale and pickups. Awesome demo. Thanks!

    The m80m sounds the best. I have the Schecter Banshee Mach 7 FR S with lundgren pickups. They are great for those low tones. I used to have the Ibanez RG8 with the Tosin Abasi pickups installed. It sounded beautiful. I bought the RG9 and the stock pickups and 5 way toggle made it really shine. I also had the RGA9 with EMG 909s installed. I loved the Meshuggah style bridge it came with. It's great for tuning stability. Anyway, I've rambled on too long. I think I'd go with the Ibanez m80m OR Schecter 9 string. Great video! Take care, Sam.

  • @ritualsoundsystem

    Great video. Have you tried the "official" 24v mod for your 808's and 909's? Removes a bit of that over-compressed sound EMG is plagued by, and increases pick attack and overall feel. Those 909's sounded pretty dope in that 9 of yours already though!
    I put one in my 30" Agile 9 and was really surprised... it had the clarity of a Fishman, but the sound of an EMG. Instantly bought a few more for all my 808's and 909's.

    At the riff at 8:10 you can clearly hear that signature Deftones guitar sound at the higher harmonics, at the 8:40 riff you can also hear the Meshuggah sound at the dampened pickings. I like the fact that these are all the same rig, and only differing in the guitars, but they sound so different as they just sit in their own way in the mix and making it sound a bit more like the actual band where they come from

    Comparisons of extended-scale guitars need to factor in lead playing. I know you said you’re not a lead player, but that’s precisely the area in which extended-range guitars become a problem - not just with regards to playability (due to the increased string tension making bends harder), but also with regards to sound:
    High notes on high strings, when they are under higher tension due to the extended scale length, sound a lot shriekier than on a 6-string or other guitar with a standard scale length. I learned this the hard way with my Schecter Hellraiser C-8 FR. It’s one of the reasons why multiscale guitars were invented. Then again, those can’t have Floyd Roses - at least, I’ve never seen one on a multiscale guitar.

    • @DJENTISNTNOTAGENRE
      @DJENTISNTNOTAGENRE 2 роки тому

      These sort of things always come down to personal preference at the end of the day. There's absolutely nothing wrong or incorrect about liking the generally darker and less defined(?) sound of low tunings on shorter scale lengths. Also, depending on what kind of music you're playing, that kind of tone would even be preferable. I'm more into the baritone sound myself, but I've heard plenty of great bands/songs that use shorter lengths for low tunings and they wouldn't sound the same to me with a baritone.

  • @jacobhalsey1393
    @jacobhalsey1393 2 роки тому

    When it comes to extended range something that doesn't get nearly enough attention is bridge pickup placement. In fact I think it is one of the most important things to look for as the pickup can always be changed the route location cannot. The closer it is to the bridge the tighter that sound is. If you want an 8 or 9 string and you see the bridge pickup is a suspect distance from the bridge like that ibanez 9 string steer clear.
    If anyone is looking for an 8 string guitar recommendation I would say check out the ignition series from Jericho guitars. My fusion ignition 8 cost me 750 at the time and it sounds miles better than any other 8 I've owned/ played. I've had 4 Ibanez 8 strings between the prestige and premium lines and they don't come close.

    LTD is best here because those chords sounded so full and rich. Right after that come the Ibanez in my ears and both Ibanez sounded similar. I dont like the schecter cause it sounds so nasal and metallic here and I even play a schecter lol but 6 String.

    M80M is the best. I’m at a point where I can’t play an 8 string anymore unless it has a long scale length and a Lundgren.

    the schecter definitely brings out that lowest note better than the ibanez

    I have this weird fantasy that I'd be up on stage performing with one of these 4, but with pop songs or something light hearted.
    I guess I find the dichotomy interesting.
    So now I'm shopping around for an m80m hahaha.
    I heard Steph say in a video that he wasn't pleased with the Fishmans bc of how they were dialed in. Something about being done over the phone, maybe? I hope he one day gets to make the ones he is actually pleased with, bc that "Dorothy" is gorgeous.

      The active mode on the Stef Fishmans is really good honestly

      That's weird because I could've swore I watched a video of Steph talking about being there in person with the guys from Fishman to dial in the EQ for his pickups. It just seems like a weird thing to quite literally "phone it in" with the tone of something like your own signature pickups.

      @@DJENTISNTNOTAGENRE I agree, but I don't claim to have all the details. I'll look for it again, as I'm pretty sure it was at Namm or whatever.

      Ah, OK. So they were in his bedroom I guess. Which he admits wasn't the best for sound quality.

      @@CFChristian Oh I definitely don't either and, funny enough, I think the video I'm talking about is from NAMM. Maybe I'm remembering it incorrectly. It's been quite a while since I watched it.

    Fushmans sound as always very mid focused which is very not heavy if you want to okay something djent oriented. True classic is M80M but not with this setup. Schecter sounded really nice too.

    Ibanez for life 🤪

    The Schecter and Ibanez were the clear winners imo. Maybe it’s because they didn’t have that bouncey “djenty” pitch drift that irks me haha
