      It makes way more sense to tune a 7 string extra low than to get a 9 string in my opinion. Even seven strings are unnecessary if you’re just playing metal rhythm and don’t do a lot of high-register lead stuff.
      I never understand why people buy extended range guitars and then almost only play in the low end range. You’re spending more money and making your life harder for no reason

    • @reezlaw
      @reezlaw Рік тому +1

      @@DingDongDaddyFromDumas it's just not the same. A 9-string is made specifically for that, which has a few ramifications, the most important of which is scale. @@reezlaw You realize extended scale guitars exist right lol?
      I just meant having 8 strings is unnecessary, obviously the average six string can’t be tuned that low. But a 28 incher would be just fine.
      Also it varies by guitar and string gauge is a factor, but I have a 26.5” six string that I’ve tuned to drop F with an 80 gauge for the F and it got the same clarity as a meshuggah tone.
      But yeah the scale length is what matters, not the quantity of strings. If you mainly play the low strings, you’re making your life sooo much harder buying an 8-9 string guitar.

      It really isn't that much "harder," I don't know what you're on about with that.
      You're also forgetting that play feel, play experience is different with each quantity of strings, and that each also changes how one approaches the instrument.
      Some people just prefer the feel of the extended range instruments. Nothing wrong with that.
      And besides, the idea that people who get extended range guitars only play on the low strings is just silly.

    You've gotta play in classical position! Try it that way and the surf board becomes far more manageable, your fingers can reach everything comfortably (at least on an 8 string)! My 8 string Hellraiser feels comfy af as long as I play in classical position.

    • @niclastname
      @niclastname 4 роки тому +2

      I started on a Dean ML, and I honestly find it uncomfortable to not play in classical position now. The ML shape is perfect for it, and I feel constrained in "normal" position now. The angle makes finger stretches more difficult, reaching the higher frets feels like I'm having to reach around my torso/mash my arm into my side to get my hand up there, and my right arm/should gets tired from holding it up to the side like that. Classical feels so much more natural, aside from the fact that you may need a strap depending on the shape of your guitar. One other nice thing about classical is that it's much closer to standing position, so it doesn't feel super different from sitting like when I was used to "normal" position.

    • @XLRider2
      @XLRider2 4 роки тому +3

      Funny thing, I have smaller hands and they also felt more comfortable to me... I also gravitated towards 8 and 9 string guitars because I liked the way they sound (when produced well) and loved the possibilities!
      I own this guitar, I found it used on ebay for 550$ and alternate back-and-forth between it and my used RG2228, and I love it! Solidly built, feels great, it's heavy, but what do you expect from a 9 string made out of Mahogany. Couple of things I do want to say about it though, seeing how you said you were eyeing this I assumed you've done your research, but I feel inclined to uh.. give my two cents for lack of a better way to say it.
      01. Unlike the Hellraiser C-9, Schecter's other 9 string, this guitar does not have locking tuners so you'd have to get your own set if you want those. Hipshot sells a set of locking tuners for 9 strings for ~100$, but they are limiting on what string gauge you can throw through them: The tuning head for the 9th String can go up to a .104, and the 8th can go up to a .84, so depending on what you're trying to go for string tension wise that may be a problem. I have them and mine and I think they're great, they hold tuning well (I primarily play half-step down / C Standard)
      02. Also unlike the Hellraiser C-9, this guitar has a 30" scale length, while the C-9 is 28". This has it's own pros and cons to it, namely it can be unwieldy if you're not used to something that long... but if you have something like the Ibanez M80M, or something similar you should be fine... because added string tension is wonderful. One of the biggest issues you're going to find is that not many places my strings that are long enough to fit the instrument, I use Stringjoy.. who has a custom string pack maker and the largest size that make is a .90. On this guitar, that .90 in a low C# or C feels better than a low F# or F on a regular 8 string... and the 8th string feels even better.
      I still will say this though it can super jarring from the 27" RG2228 to the 30" Platinum 9, but still if you want to get your inner Josh Travis on and tune down to A0... you basically need the 30" scale.
      So yeah that's just my two cents... my two very long cents (I have a problem). I do hope this helps!

    I would've bought a o string, but the only ones I found where too expensive and none of them had a mat finish. So I just got a 7 string that actually had that nice mat finish at a good price. And I love it! It was the first guitar I ever played that had more than 6 strings. And it was also the first instrument I figured out how to play without any external information outside of my own knowledge of the usual 6 string! I learned so much about music that way! And it actually helped me figure out how to play the regular 6 string even more!! It's like just that one string multiplied my skills 3 times over!!! 🤘😛💥🎸💥

    I recently got a Digitech Drop pedal and I'm still doing some A/B comparisons as to how transparent using the pedal with a 7-string is to get down into the 8-string range against my actual 8-string guitar, and so far it's sounding good. The feel of a 7 is just so much more comfortable for me personally. But I get the super prog AAL sort of people that need a ton of vertical range on any given fret.

      That's my problem with schecter, they make great metal guitars and have a solid range of leftys, but I can't get past those 14-year-old emo edgelord bats. They have a few with shark teeth inlays, but not on anything I want.

  • @gr3y_eminence

    I think people are getting mixed up, partly due to marketing, when they seek tuning lower versus getting extended range. With a bit of messing around I had a 2nd guitar 6 string, set up with a 7 string set; I just omitted the high e string and used the low B. What matters is string gauge and scale length (the distance between the nut and bridge, where the string is actually vibrating).
    Eventually I got a cheap used Jackson 7 string which I didn't play for ages. Recently I got back into guitar, I'm using a lot of pedals on synths and it was natural to try the same technique again. So I got a 9 string set (lol) with the bottom being heavy and balancing out light: .105, .80, .64, .46, .34, .24., .16, .11., .09. It cost the same as a set for 8 string so why not haha and predictably the .80 or low F#1 standard on an 8 string is the sweet spot for basic distortion power chord stuff. I have it tuned up to G1 which is the same as whole step down from Drop A tuning with a 7, that's standard Drop D but with a low B. However that heavier gauge really helped with stability. I'm going to try messing with the .105 gauge string one more time but C#1 or drop B just doesn't do it for me. Notably it was stable physically, it just wasn't to my taste. Clean however, I was able to play "bass chords" which I find awkward on my bass so it far from useless for the right person. You can totally play bass like this. The low E is around .100 after all.
    So my basic message is if you want to mess around a bit you can take a hobby-horse guitar or whatever and restring it with a balanced set (for 15 bucks, it's kind of a fun experiment) and from there you might choose your own gauges individually. I think the push to sell extended range 8 and now 9 string guitars is creating this "conventional wisdom" that you need to have one to reach these lower notes. These instruments offer a lot of possibilities for alternate tunings and chord voicing which I think is the best argument for them. But, for what most people seek in the world of low tuning, a cheap 2nd guitar with no more than 7 strings is probably best, if you tinker it will cause you to learn as well, a way better option until you know you want an extended range . . . after all you could go up and not down! No reason you can't move the bridge or deviate from the conventional gauges to open up tuning possibilities.

    People forget that the reach you get in each position is so much different. Like, you can stay in the same position on the neck on a nine string for certain riffs that would require jumping back and forth between positions on a seven. It becomes real economical in those cases, it's not just simply just about getting the lowest chug.

    When does a guitar become a bass? I was always a six string guy, but recently picked up a Harley Benton fanned fret 8 string. After a fret level, heavier gauge strings and raising the action a bit, it's a lot of fun! I don't think I'll ever be solely an 8 string guy, but now, I definitely understand the appeal.

What was so cool about this guitar is despite that I don’t like the look when I heard it on sonic drive studios channel the sound was so impressive and nearly mimicked my prs fatback that I didn’t care about the looks and for a guitar to do that to a player is something I think we can all understand as being a moment when you recognize a piece of stand out gear.
