    What I'm wondering is why all the 60 year old blues players are on a video for ERGs. Every comment is either these guitars are for 15 year olds who listen to too much metal or my piano has more strings or why not use a bass. It's so easy to criticize music that you don't understand. Why not respect the people who come here because they're actually interested in the guitars instead of telling them their music is shit?

    In my opinion, when you show these guitars that are primarily used for hardcore metal, it would be better to use an amp that compliments that style. Some combo marshall isn't going to inspire people about the guitar at all. It sounds terrible with the lower stings. If you're in a guitar store, isn't there better amps to use it on?

    Just to point it out to people, the deeper strings are NOT popular for melodic playing, they are popular for their percussive string attack, and are used in genres where the distortion settings are so that the deeper strings are huge percussive blasts of overtones. Harmony does not really register too well in those ranges and it's not supposed to either.
    The comments are criticizing it on the premise of being a guitar, but it's really made its name for being a drum with melodic elements.

I think there's a lot of experimentation, diversification of genres and general brilliance coming out of the movement that you might just miss if you blink.

      yeah I personally dont go lower than B on any guitar, BUT to be honest Animals as leaders tune their 8 string to E, and Glass Cloud mostly plays in F, D and even a low A of the guitarist 9 string and it doesnt seem to muddy. I think the style of playing is important. If you tune that low you cant use chords anymore with the low string, its more percussive bass style with the low strings

    I don't think the JVM was a good choice for an amp on this one. They have their strengths, but they just can't handle down-tuning very well. This would've been fairer through a Mesa Rectifier, a Peavey 6505, or one of the new Randalls, just to name a few.

  • @MaggaraMarine

    I have nothing against extra strings. If people want more strings, why shouldn't they use them? I don't think the music you make has anything to do with how many strings your guitar has. While I don't really like the genres where these guitars are being used, I don't really have anything against them. What does the amount of strings have to do with the quality of the music?
    But if the selling point of your band is the amount of strings you are using, that's just stupid.
    But when you are listening to an album, you don't hear how many strings the guitarist is using. And even if you do, again what does that have to do with the quality of the music? If you don't like low sounds, that's OK. But these guitaris can be used for more than just low playing. You can play new kind of chord voicings with them. They have a great range. Just experiment.
    And how does it hurt anybody if they are selling 9 string guitars? It takes nothing away from the 6 string guitars.

    • @Schmorgasblab
      @Schmorgasblab 9 років тому +2

      Agreed. The Chord voicings are a great benefit to more strings. Personally I see huge potential for jazz and blues. Look at guitar players like Lenny Breau or George Van Epps, two absolute behemoth guitar players ... both on 7 strings most of the time.

    • @combinbain
      @combinbain 9 років тому

      i totally agree, but the fact is that an 8, or worse a 9, string guitar covers most of the spectrum frequencies. Imagine what a mess would be recording a song or just a concert: the guitar would blow away the bass and partially the drums, plus the sound is awful when playing the lower strings. As an example listen to some songs of meshuggah: apart from liking or not the genre, the bass is useless and from the drums you can hear just the snare, kick and cymbals. everything else is covered by guitars (8 strings). said from a guitarist, having an 8 or 9 strings guitar is just pure ego.

    • @MaggaraMarine
      @MaggaraMarine 9 років тому

      combinbain Well, that's just one way of using it. A 9 string guitar doesn't replace a bass. It's not all about the range, it's about the sound. You could also argue that a keyboard player could also replace the bass. But most bands with keyboardists also have bassists and guitarists - so they are playing the same frequencies but the sound is different and that makes it work.
      It's a new instrument and needs to be experimented with. Djent is just one style that you can play on it (and you don't even need 9 strings for that - you can always drop tune your 6 string if you need low notes).
      Check out Rob Scallon. He has done some more original sounding stuff on 8 and 9 string guitars.
      Extended range guitars would also work well as solo instruments, just like piano. It's basically a piano that is played like a guitar (if we look at the range). People need to experiment and not just follow the trends. I'm sure you could be really innovative with the 9 string guitar.

      Ah yes I do see your argument. In fact I agree that with accompanying musicians 8 and 9 string guitars can be way overkill. I was thinking more in terns of MaggaraMarine's argument for solo performances -- think of Ted Greene with a 9 string. (he would probably argue away from even using such a thing). haha

    7- string was a pleasant suprise to me. I love it! In fact, it only adds 5 more semi/half tones (in standard tuning), which is nothing special. :) the cooler thing is that you have notes from the lower frets from the 6th string just under (on the 7th string) its higher frets. Very cool for lead guitar and also for rhythm (albeit, for rhythm, it requires a longer reprogramming, IMO)
    8 and 9- string guitars just don't add nothing I want for my original music so I can't comment about them. I love how Tosin Abasi uses his 8 string guitar though!

But to me 8 and 9 strings are so overrated because it seems like EVERY modern metal band HAS to have guitars that have more than 6 strings, tune them ridiculously low, have EMG pickups, and do nothing but chug.(Unless if your Tosin Abasi)

      For the 8 at least I'd like to blame the horrible sound on a combination of those EMGs (I've never heard of a person who's actually liked an EMG 808 haha) and that they're using a Marshall - nothing wrong with the marshall, it's just that their voice doesn't work very well for the tunings that those guitars go that low. These guitars always sound like "farts" and "out of tune", I think that guitar amps' speakers are not designed to handle the low frequencies of these extra strings, they just sound bad. Plus, in the mix, you would get in the way of the bass player so what's the point?

    • @MaGariShun
      @MaGariShun 10 років тому +3

      If you listen to some 8 string records, they are not really used like a bass. It's more like the fat string gives you a certain kind of metallic clunky sound in the mid and upper frequencies and the guitars are usually mixed to emphasize that and not the sub 300 or so hz frequencies that a real bass occupies. Rob is completely unable to even do a decent 7 string demo, so obviously he has no clue about how to play a 8 string, even more so he doesn't know how to set up a rig for it. To my ears they use too much gain, are not boosting the amp (to make it tighter), use a (semi) open back combo etc.
      As much as I like rob it would really be more useful to get someone competent with those things to do the demos on ERG.

      Everything is out of tune technically due to the tuning system we use, equal temperament. all the intervals are spread over an octave equally so no interval is pure except for the octave. For example a pure major 3rd is 400 cents while a pure 3rd is 386 cents, A whopping 14 cents out of tune the the pure interval (humans can hear the difference of 3 cents in a note) So really nothing is truly in tune at all

  • @JeanYvesP

    I got 8 strings guitars for years now it does feel like a new type of instrument. I then got that exact 9 strings over a year ago and felt the same again. I then got a 10 strings fanfreted 3 months ago which feel a bit more like a big 9 than a new instrument type. I get it that most players think that 6 strings is enough, but in my case, I barely stop playing guitars with less than 9 strings but I certainly play different things since then. I still go back to 8 when I want to play more traditional stuff. I sold pretty much all my 6. So extended range is different, unnecessary, but really inspiring in a totally different
    way. And if you are playing solo guitar (or just playing by yourself) it is just great since you can now get a much richer sound.
    For the records, I play more jazzy clean tone stuff with lots of tapping.

      I'd say the 9 has more of a percussive attack to it. I listen to a couple bands who had implemented the 9 string and they used it as more of a punchy, percussive attack instead of technicality. I enjoy it. It just sounds sinister.

There are reasons you don't play bass/extended scale instruments through a guitar amp 1.) there is a good chance you'll fry the amp or 2.) you'll blow the speakers and 3.) it sounds like ass, you need a rig just for the 7, 8, or 9-string guitar.

    This virus situation really gives you chance to 'reflect' or go for 'return from future' assessments. First off, my early guitar escapades revolved around choice between 6 or 4 strings. (Lead/Rhythm or Bass.) - Yeah, long, long time ago. - With the advent of 7-8-9 stringers, you do have to go through a learning curve but, it's a bit like not having to decide on a role. In a way, you're combining skills into what is a distinct new role. Now, you play guitars that fit specific styles. - Personally, it's a challenge that's welcome, & rewarding too, in the long run. - Next challenge? Fan-frets! Bring 'em!

The only issue will probably by the nut slots. I'd quite like to Rob and Lee experiment with this and see if it'll work.

      Jackal Fox Since they use longer scale lengths, it would indeed make sense to use lighter strings. However, if you drop-tune, I'd recommend stringing the lower strings with shortscale bass strings, as those are denser per gauge than guitar or bass strings. The stock strings they load on these guitars are really not ideal.

    7 strings have their use. For starters it puts the according scale on the A-D-G-B-E strings directly below the root note on your first A string (tuning A-E-A-D-G-B-E). That actually makes it very fun to play and it still feels true to the playing style of a 6 string. Completely agree with the Cap on 7+ strings feeling like a different instrument (and it doesn't agree with me either). But yeh, Animals as Leaders pretty much proves that it can be a great instrument.
