I also want to add that during slavery, there were actual laws in place the prohibited natural (kinky) hair from being out in freeform, because the whites found it offensive. This took place in the south.

Though I'm white, I've always thought dark black women were gorgeous. I have an aunt who is black, she's one of the most beautiful people I've ever known. Her skin is so dark it looks like it glows in the sunlight. She has longer kinky hair, but it's so big and stunning. When I was younger I envied her because she was so beautiful to me. Everyone has the right to embrace themselves. Hair shouldn't be such an issue that people will hurt themselves trying to look a certain way. Society has failed all of us!!! It's failed black women and black folks in general, by telling them they have to look a certain way. Also by allowing them to continue thinking they have to look like white folks. We're different because we evolved to survive our surroundings. Some of the most beautiful people on the planet are black. Big beautiful hair, bald, curly short hair, fro, dreads, why should we not embrace ourselves and each other. I love that the world is populated by people who look different. It makes us so much more interesting and beautiful. We're unique in our own ways. We should love, accept, embrace, support, uplift, and find the beauty in one another. Black women and men are naturally beautiful. Asian folks, Native folks, Polynesian folks, White folks, Latin folks, Biracial folks, Multiracial folks all possess beauty, naturally. It's time we see the beauty in one another, love each other.

My full name is Destiny Angelique Webb. My grandfather was Welsh :) I took my mother's maiden name because I was born out of wedlock lol. And my father's surname is Norse, Hackett :) Though, I don't know much else about my lineage :) I'm thinking of buying one of those DNA kits lol :)

Tbh I do feel like we as a people need to take more action towards making natural hair more acceptable especially for young kids. Weave etc is cool but even I have tried to stay away from the straight type of styles when I use weave I’m even trying to use braids or natural type styles as apposed to sew ins etc.

I’ve been natural for 11 years and work for Department of Homeland security. People hold themselves back. Natural is not a issue. Just do it. No one at work cares about my hair. They love it. I’m the flat twist, a fro queen at work. Just do it. It’s your hair that grows out of your hair. I don’t care what the celebrities are doing I like me. Ok 👌🏾

This comment sound so stupid, You'll do realize that there was a law in place in the USA, that says natural hair from black people can't be worn? If you don't know that, then you need to know about your history. Second the law was just banned in 2021. IT's not that they "didn't care", you worked for the homeland security, that means they where afraid of getting sued, THAT DON"T WORK EVERYWHERE>.. Now should more black women were they're hair natural, Yes, EVERYWHERE, not just at work...but let's not forget that there are tons of black woman that do wear they're hair natural.

Natural hair grows so much faster than chemically treated hair. I wish I could post the before and after pics to show that the shrinkage is so real! The stretch of the hair always amazes me because once a straightening is done, the results are always longer than what's expected. I ❤ our hair texture. I'm talking about the plethora of women who are afflicted with fibroids and the concomitant ramifications such as: extremely painful menstrual cycles/PMS, bladder issues, being anemic(from excess bleeding), the inability to conceive, after surgery a missing womb and then a missing boyfriend or husband and a distended stomach(which no sane woman desires), to be conservative. You may not have such issues as yet or ever at all, however, many 'so-called' black women live it daily, can verify but are oblivious to the connection between their grave condition(s) and the chemicals found in relaxers, glues and dyes. With my contribution, I wasn't making assumptions or asking you or anyone who comes on this forum a question on the particular topic, I speak/write with authority post doing extensive reading and from speaking to women who were and are still suffering from the self-imposed conditions I wrote about. I somewhat empathize with you because obviously, as an ex-licence cosmetologist, you would always like to think that your past vocation/livelihood have not contributed to these serous issues of y/our sisters. It's most interesting that you mentioned the die-ts of 'so-called' black women and I do concur with you that these western world die-ts which they partake in especially during all of these anti-healthy/spiritual hellidays are contributing to chronic non-communicable diseases and the lack of beautiful skin, hair growth and great fatness. So, with these otherworldly die-ts of most so-called' black people which principally are destroying their hearts, pancreas, liver, small/large intestine and kidneys and then from an exogenous to endogenous standpoint (because whatever goes on the skin eventually gets into the bloodstream), the chemicals in dyes, glues, conditioners and relaxers are undoubtedly responsible for the dread conditions I wrote and is very, very concern about.
Question:
Why don't you share your healthy diet(s), supplemental regimen and some of the physical activities that you engage in with your sisters who'll read these messages to help them?

I’m mixed, so growing up I always wanted long, straight hair (I live in Europe)because I felt like my hair was ugly and not normal, even tho my momma was telling me it’s beautiful.
It took me 17 years to like my natural hair (now I’m really happy that my mom never allowed me to relax my hair)😭but now I LOVE it and wear my 4c hair💓with pride #blackgirlmagic

Awesome video. I appreciate the research and preparation you made. I love my natural hair and I get lots of compliments on my type 4 hair. But for some reason my parents ( father and his wife) shame me of the way my hair is. Telling me comb my hair, probably meaning to relax it or put weave in it or present it..less kinky. Now i know im not the only one going through this, I just dont understand why not just support me 😔 its just a damm shame. ✊ not even parents can phase me.

Sis! I go through it with my aunts and cousins! Everyone misses my straight hair but I love the strength in my natural curl pattern! My cousin attacked me to fist fight because she called my hair "nappy"! I laughed and called it curly! The agression from family towards natural hair is sickening! Now, they're all bald from weaves and hard pressing and want my advice on hair growth! The tables always turn around! Whenever they hate- You're doing something right! Stay Blessed!!!

so true that the criticism comes mainly from us, we are so trained to keep ourselves in our places so to speak. self hate and self defeatism are so rampant, part of the same thing that makes black students afraid to try or even ashamed to excel in schools (I teach in Harlem, and the way students hold themselves and each other down is frustrating), our beauty and our intelligence is phenomenal and second to none, but we are often the slowest to realize our own blessings...as Bob Marley said "emancipate yourself from mental slavery...none but ourselves can free our minds"

It's detailed in Numbers as well. Moses detailed the Nazarite vow....and instructed them ( male and female) to wear locs.
Numbers 6:5 All the days of the vow of his separation there shall no razor come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in the which he separateth himself unto the Lord, he shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow.
That just means to not cut the hair. It's not locks as in dreads, just locks as in lengths of hair.

Great video! I heard a story, the Europeans came to Africa and describe the people hair as dreadful locks and that’s where the coined term dreadlocks came from. I’m a Hair teacher so I do my best to educate my students. Let’s change our language and stop saying dreadlocks. No such thing as ethnic hair I’m still trying to find an ethnic heart doctor 🤨😔😱

When I was 10 I felt bad about my skin color and wanted to be white, I wanted to have hair like white people,I begged my mom and asked her if I can have a perm. She said no every single time.. then I heard about locks and the history and I wanted locks..now I’m 23 and have long healthy shiny dread locks! I’m proud of my skin color!!!

You also backed your case with very strong references (historic photos, interviews, & footage) that added credence to this documentary. I was pleasantly and surprisingly pleased. Big KUDOS to you. I pray that you continue to make informative, educational documentaries, and that someday you'll be highlighted on channels like PBS!
In my experience in life, straigtening my hair with relaxers and wearing straight hair weaves has not strengthened me financially. It actually costs me more money to maintain my hair when i was wearing it relaxed. And weave in itself is an even more costly expense. I've given up relaxers since 2009 but occasionally I will rock a weave. The majority of the time I will wear my natural 4C type hair. I am glad that I have regained the confidence to wear it and not feel conscientious about it. I was shocked that people were actually complementing me on my natural hair, especially the men! I feel like this, every other race walks outside sporting their natural hair with no shame just being themselves and so I figured I just go ahead and be comfortable sometimes and just be me too! Less stress!

I wish more black people could see their own natural beauty and potentially stop using all of the chemicals. The sooner we all work together to embrace it the sooner the rest of the world will embrace it. Our kids are watching our every move and they need to know that they are beautiful just the way they are. My favorite part of this video is when the woman from the news says "im hear to give the news, not look pretty" which by the way, she is beautiful no matter how her hair is styled. I love seeing women on tv wearing their hair in its natural especially in locs. Its important for the people we see on tv to be an accurate representation of what we look like on the daily basis.

Thank you for this vid. I live in Washington, DC and all the hairstyles you showed. Senator Elenor Holmes Norton always wore a bush. I love seeing the various ways we can wear our hair. This is my second time going natural and I will be this way till I die!!! One thing to keep in mind: If you’re taking any medication and perming/ coloring your hair be careful. Some medications combined with hair chemicals may cause your hair to fall out. My hair stylist of 20 years told me this.

Alicia Mendsey Yes process is reverse. The exact same chemicals are used to curl that are used to straighten. OR to curl/ hot curling irons./ Hot combs to straighten. It's basically bending hair. Braids bend/ curlers bend. To much bending causes breakage./ Split ends.
