  • African-American men and women spend billions of dollars on their hair, but U.S. beauty care companies are missing out.
Mintel values the black hair care industry at more than $2.5 billion, but that statistic doesn't include products such as hair accessories, wigs or electric styling products. So, the industry is actually worth much more.
Most hair care products purchased by African-Americans are imported from countries such as India and China, despite the U.S. having one of the most lucrative hair care markets in the world.» Subscribe to CNBC: cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBC

There are several documentaries on the hair industry that explain why ownership is dominated by Asians. Most of the real hair sold is Asian hair and so Asian companies market their products in Asian catalogs. Basically, if you can't read Chinese or Japanese then you MUST PARTNER with an Asian person to start the business. But why would they partner with you when they can do it without you and all really have to do is hire a couple black people work work for them and the other MILLION black people will buy their products. That's why blacks don't own many, if any, beauty supply stores that sell hair.

@You Mad? I get your point. When faced with facts, you just IGNORE THE FACTS and say "one excuse after the next". You sound just like these people in American known as "Conservatives". When presented with facts, they do the same thing - ignore it!

back in my days I didn't spend no more than about $20 every 3 to 4 months I had one or two wigs which didn't cause a lot of money back in those days I stopped wearing wigs about 30 years a go so right now I spend no more then maybe about $40 every six months and it may be less than that because I use oils I make my own condition has so whatever I use in my hair basically I could ingest so I don't spend that much maybe less than $100 a year on hair products and I have for a be here and I find my hair after I've learned how to manage it it's easy for me so all you ladies out there spending $30,000 a year I may be going to a professional or having weaves done sit down and check yourself I know there's some women in their 30s 40s 50s that do not know how to wash condition just do the basic things to their hair wash condition and blow it out on a cool setting they don't know how to do it so they have to have somebody to do it or either they just don't want to learn how to do it so get a reality check you make it everybody Rich accept yourself

I have about the same kinky curly hair I take care of it myself my granddaughter she conditions and do all the treatments before she goes to the beauty salon and she spends maybe $25 a month going to the beauty salon there are some women out there that are very smart and they have some very young woman women got a very smart and I don't like to take away from a business but a lot of young women know how to do their hair I wouldn't I don't I've never had a weave my hair can I take cornrows because I have an itchy scalp and I have to take them out so I do braid my hair but I have to oil it make sure that I keep my hair oiled and I have had a lot of success so ladies when you talk about spending $30,000 on your hair how much money do you make what do you put it on your credit card stop making other people rich and learn how to do your own take your time when you sitting down looking at TV learn how to manipulate your hair by products that are good for your hair good sleep so that your hair won't become Tangled when you washing it used oil treatment you got coconut oil if it's good for you and all the oils that may be good for you castor oil rapeseed oil these are the light Orioles grape seed oil there's a whole lot of very light oils that you can use on your hair so find out read go to UA-cam do whatever you can do to save you money number one and so that you don't have to go running to a professional because we're natural hair now they want $100 and according to the length it may be $125 learn how to do your own hair it's not hard

It’s exhausting after all these years black people still haven’t monopolised an industry. I mean how are we not the majority shareholders of BlackHair care. We’re forever teaching the world through UA-cam and blogs how to actually look after the toughest hair type as they take our natural hair concoctions and resell our ideas back to us at ridiculous prices. We have an ever growing demand to maintain our natural Afro hair in a world than demonises the appearance of it and we are still paying a high price for it and in no way are we ever going to profit from it. Society still ushers black woman to conform to straighter styles with wig and weaves becoming the norm. Products to take care of what’s underneath are increasing in price every year. Every black woman regardless of length, curl type, or profession should refuse to purchase anything that isn’t 100% natural, beneficial or produced from a legitimate black owned business. How are we yet again leaving the fate our tresses in another countries hands, they don’t share our hair type or social concerns yet are growing richer from it!

Ive learnt to spend my money where black women are featured. You often find huge companies like She's Moisture don't cater to their market's price point, in terms of general cost of living. So why should I spend more when the company doenst take into account certain societal environmental factors. For example that many , black African women have now become bread winners for entire families. Those are personal realities and play a part in purchasing decisions. I have relaxed hair and usethr J Strickland company's products like Blue Magic etc...because their price point is relevant to my reality.
Also I live in South Africa and many of uslook up to African American women for hair inspo, they seem to have the hair game on lock,in terms of trends etc.
Nex Sheen Arganics is also another black owned company, they launched in Africa a few years ago, I travel to the US often and find they theit price point is very similar. My point is , buy from people who care about YOUR economic reality as a black woman.while I would love to support my fave celebs like Taraji P and Kenya Moore 's lines of hair products, I feel they are so out of touch with reality.
So I'll stick to my Nex Sheen, Blue Magic and Africa's Pride.....

My mom was apart of the era that used hot combs and flat irons, so when I was born with a head of natural hair, she had no clue what to do with it except relax it because "it was too much to handle". It wasn't until I decided to do my own hair, I cut off all my relaxer, and figured out a routine that worked for me. Which is "the simpler the better" approach.

      D. O. That is me. Once a week I start with hot oil treatment either avocado or olive oil mixture (coconut oil drys out my hair) then I shampoo (Camille rose shampoo is what I am using now) along with deep conditioning (I add henna to my deep conditioner) (also Camille rose, I like that it is black owned) no heat when I deep condition though but I do leave it in over night. Then I put my hair in twist with African Shea butter (from Amazon) I leave it in twist for a week... once a month I also dust my end any spit ends, knots I can’t detangle, or fairy knots get cut. Trying to see if I can make it to tailbone. I all honesty it took almost a year to find what worked for me. So experiment and learn what your hair likes. I have had my ups and downs during it but I can honestly say I love my hair. I hope this helped, positive vibes!!

      D. O. Sorry that was so long but I feel all that helps with breakage. Honestly I never left my hair get dry..... the Shea butter twist keeps my hair moisturized until wash day. Sleep with a bonnet or silk or satin pillow cases as well. Most of the time my hair is up in twist and not touching my clothes. It’s about keeping those ends moisturized and split end free.

  • @faythmomto5
    @faythmomto5 5 років тому +44

where are these figures for natural hair coming from? I spend maybe 150-200 dollars a year all up on my products-not including shampoo and conditioner which I share with my family. I'm talking leave in and twisting cream. A tangle teezer is 20 bucks and i don't get a new one yearly.. The whole point, in my mind of going natural is to reduce cost and dependency on others to work with and protect what you have naturally. At least in my view. I trim my own ends even- but understand those who don't feel confident with diy. eta I did add an oil blend (Melanin brand) to this routine and a bottle of essential lavender for my scalp which lasts for years because I only use a drop to a bottle of spray water as I now live in a dryer/wintery state. Still not int he thousands though.

So besides it being overwhelming to take care of as someone without the experience to do hair, I also don't have the time to do decent looking styles. I hear a lot of black people calling their hair kinky. Stop calling your hair kinky, there’s nothing kinky about your hair. Also stop saying blk hair is difficult. It’s not difficult. You just need to understand your hair. In Africa there are many tribes, with long beautiful healthy hair. They use things from nature.

I did spend a lot of money trying new products in the beginning. Now that I am 13-months natural, I have found what works for my hair and I'm spending a lot less. $68 dollars worth of discounted products will last me 4-6 months. You can find discounted natural hair products at Bed Bath & Beyond, TJ Maxx, and Marshall's.

They crazy. I ain’t never spent that amount of money on my hair. But I also don’t go to hair salons and I don’t wear weaves and wigs. I moisture mainly with aloe juice and glycerin. Seven bucks a gallon at Walmart and twenty bucks a gallon on amazon respectively. There is no need for all that.

      Hi Heather,
Do you purchase the aloe juice and glycerin separately then mix together and apply?

    • @BklynQueeninLA

the year which i spent the least on my hair is when it started growing more. Honestly, once i found what works for me (very cheap and basic products) i just stuck to it.

It matters how much profit that black women make from the business worldwide not what America makes.
I’m on black womens side, plus I think that their needs to be a 2nd movement of acceptance of our type 4hair texture. The overspending to try to make our hair look more Eurocentric/straight needs to die and be replaced by a 2nd wave of pride.

As many hairstyles and cuts I have had in my life I find $30,000 hard to believe. Maybe 3000 in 5 years. But not 30,000 in a year. No way.
