When a black person is called beautiful I ask that you don’t say “well everyone is”. We know that but we’re not going to say “everyone is beautiful”. If someone called you beautiful then someone turned around and said “well everyone is” then it defeats the purpose of calling you beautiful and making you feel better in your own skin
I have crippling depression6969 Don’t be ignorant. The standard of beauty says that white women are beautiful. Poc have been held to white standards of beauty. So yes white women are told constantly they are beautiful for being white.
People in the comments saying it wasn't rebellion 🤦🏾♀️ It WAS. They were tired of such Eurocentric ideas forced upon them so they let their hair be to show it's normal. Rebellion DOES NOT equal bad all the time
This is so true. I was taught in school that the black panthers back in the day were bad and went around murdering people as a form of rioting and after doing my OWN research, I'm just like?? Why don't they teach us the REAL facts about history?
I KNOW. So what if it's fake huh? Do they have a problem? Does it make me any less beautiful cuz it's fake? I worked hard to pull if thus hairstyle I'm not gonna let anyone drag me down 😤
But it's changing because more Black women are standing up against such mistreatment. And in the future i feel like we can go to work or other places without straightening our hair or relaxing our hair. At my secondary school they tried kicking me out for having my afro and not tying up my hair as it was a school policy to tie it up if its below shoulder length which it was not. I rebelled and explained to the teacher who was white (and had mixed kids so idk why she didn't look into black hair but whatever) that my hair doesn't flop down like hers i'm black and that hairbands will break when i attempt to tie up my hair, my hair isn't shoulder length and that unless she wants to pay for me to get braids she should leave me alone. Since then more of the black girls in my school started coming into school with their natural hair or did the big chop. I'm not saying you're incorrect btw
It really blows my mind how people of other culture and color can come to a video that is CLEARLY about the Black race and feel some sort of way when they see a comment praising or appreciating Black culture yet put a remark saying it’s racist, it just boggles my mind. 🤯
Right! This video about black hair and all im reading is ppl hating on compliments about blacks or saying all races or women are beautiful, when no one said it wasnt this video was specifically about us. Mfrs hate when we shine!
Complimenting it is okay but it doesn't mean the video itself is not racist. You should be the first one to be offended, since they made this JUST because it's black hair. Why not make a video about 100 years of hair including every race?
Kristy Melinda I've seen them focus on COUNTRIES. Is black a country? Nope. That's why you'll never see "100 years of asian hair" or something like that.
I don't understand the thought process of some of the commenters. Even if you thought the video meant the color of hair, as soon as you saw the content you should have known they meant black people.
Kimi Choo you don’t have to say anything, it’s better you don’t anyway. The models in this video were beautiful, if you disagree then don’t say anything
I would just like to say to any white girls reading this right now, you can love the hair. You can compliment the hair. But do not touch the hair like it's your pet. It's creepy
Bloodline EightySix in all my life it’s only ever been white girls and my school 75% Asians that come from different countries and it’s their first time seeing my type of hair. Hush your mouth and stop trying to speak on our experiences
Straightening their hair is STILL not always voluntarily though. As a black woman living in Germany, I cannot get a job in an office without straightening my afro. Especially outside of America and Africa there is still much to be done.
I’m really pissed off when people think they can police other women’s hair. F off everybody. She wants it to be natural and you don’t like, look somewhere else. She was a weave and you don’t like, look somewhere else.
@@youknowimdoingit2074 the absurdity of calling out someone "I wouldn't expect you to understand, you're white", of course she will only state never police a black woman's hair because the video is about 100 years of Black women's hair, not "100 of Black people hair". Everybody gets it, OP understand it as well, you only make an argument just to secretly spit racism towards someone. There's nothing wrong with saying "not only in women but in black men too", but adding hate comment at the end? Come on.. Also fix your grammar kid.
You know I'm Doing it so I’m black I think that was rude. She probably hears black women getting this type of treatment more than black men but it isn’t her fault that she’s white and that she doesn’t know anything about black culture
I originally thought it was referring to the hair colour that was black but I get it now. I understand if you are a bit confused of the fact that there is no Asian, Hispanic or white representation, but it is talking about black people's hair culture, not black coloured hair itself
I don't think all of you understood what I was trying to say! I was just basically saying that this video talks about black hair culture through the century and not the hair colour black
I have always loved the Afros & Braided hairstyles of the late 60s and 70s. I live in a small community semi country town in the Mid West and I wear my huge Afro Kinky Hair Proudly. It was so refreshing to see another Sistah at the store the other day in our town wearing her kinky Afro, similar to my hair. We just stared at one another, because our community is a predominantly white area and we hardly see natural hair, let alone a huge Afro. The great news,is that we are finally going back to our hair roots and we look so much prettier wearing our own kinky hair textured.
Normally I cringe at how people used to do their hair. This, on the other hand, shows how fashionable black women were and still are to this day. Rock it girls!
It seems that you guys are confused. If people are saying anything about black hair being the best it doesn't really mean "Oh so they think they are the best". For a while now black women have been told that our natural hair isn't beautiful. So when you see someone praising black hair then its just them giving support to the community.
I remember that in Ebony magazine that our own people would do ads telling us its unacceptable for our hair to be natural so buy this hair straightner and your hair will stay straight even in the rain. I said hair straightner because they weren't calling them relaxers at that time .People bought that trash and 70 percent of most people hair came out. We even did it to our selves. Peoples hair was coming out in the wash bowl it was terrible! I Laugh when I think back on it because if you made it through the process you had to get your hair wet set and sit under the dryer until your hair dried. some people never made it to the rollers or the dryer. They had to go next door to the wig store. This is a true story yall, ask your grandmothers. lol
@@vaehfromroots Not everyone wants "your" hair styles. At least not permanently. Women just like to try out different hair styles, shoe styles, fashion styles..... It's the playful nature of women. It's a fashion thing and not an identity or jealousy thing.

Jazzy James the reason white washing doesn’t exist is that white people do not claim hairstyles as their own like that. Most white girls do not want to be black. Most of the ones wearing their hair like that probably just like and appreciate the hairstyles without wanting to disrespect the culture or history behind it.
I cut my hair really short because I permed it and it ruined my hair. After the summer my hair grew a few inches. If my natural hair was a little bit longer I would defiantly wear it natural. But for now, I wear weave as a protective way for my hair to grow. Not becuase I don’t like my real hair bc I really do love it. I’m just waiting for it to grow back to its original length. People assume that I wear weave because I’m “bald headed” or I’m trying to be “white” when really I’m just wearing it to protect my hair and let it grow.
Okay, you can do freehand cornrows and they would look fantastic. I'm East African and this was very common when I was younger. But the ones in this video just look...weird lol
Isn't it telling how a traditionally African hairstyle is now used as a base to put another race of woman's hair on your head? I wonder how the ancestors feel about that...
@DD P not sure if this should offendive..but ok,btw I'm"white"...and we serbs really like black people..our man think they're gourgeus..sorry for my English
ME, too......but unfortunately, it was considered an act of REBELLION to love your natural Blackness, your natural Black beauty and and your Black/ African diaspora culture.
The problem with the use of the word rebellion is that its white ppls narrative. This should be about Black womens hair history. Not once again, White ppls story about why Black women wore them.
@@9175rock I definitely appreciate that point. Bear in mind, even OTHER Blacks disapproved of Afros. You'd be shocked how many times Black people got hassled by *other* Black people for wearing Afros, cornrows, African jewelry and dashikis.
@@miriamhavard7621 I understand that too. Some ppl used to call me militant. But my point was and is that Black ppl are not exactly monolithic. There we're many different reactions to Afro's. The fact that the narrator would say that it was a symbol of Rebellion and or not that it was a symbol or Rebellion, Pride, Liberation, Knowledge, Reconnection, etc. is suspect. Black ppls afros we're "symbols" of many things to Black ppl. Rebellion was the only thing it meant to white ppl.
+刘凯琳 Bantu knots, twist outs, braid outs, flat twist outs, wash and go's, relaxers, texturixers, box braids, locs, poofy ponytails, goddess braids, sew ins, quick weaves, wigs, banding method, shingling method, finger curls ,AFROS etc. True many other races can do the styles too but its not really the same effect.
Serene The Bean Did you just name every random thing off the top of your head? Wigs? Lmao. Really? Apparently wigs are exclusively a black thing now. Honestly, what did that have to do with anything? And you basically just went ahead and confirmed my point. Any other race can do these things with their hair. Yes, the end result would look different, obviously. Just as a black person can do a white hairstyle. It would look a bit different because of the texture but they are still capable of doing the style. The fact still remains that black hair can't magically do all sorts of things that other hair can't. Except for, as I already said before, an Afro. That would probably be the only actual style I can think of that most white people couldn't achieve. At least without a perm or curling.
Heaven_ the _black_chic_who_loves_kpop Girl thank you! I came to this video wanting to learn because I knew that black women have been opressed A LOT and I wanted to see how that affected the hair styles. But you I've been told "this video isn't for you" lmao..
I disagree, from what I've seen (as someone who lived all her life in a predominately black city and attends an HBCU) having natural hair is becoming a standard - as it should. If not entirely natural, most people cut out the perm and wear wigs or protective styles (like braids, or faux dreads in their hair, and obviously straight weave) but underneath is still natural. The percentage of people who keep the perm is getting a lot smaller now days.
If you're talking to me, I've always considered someone natural if they don't have perm in their hair because weave comes out. I even have weave sometimes to keep my hands out of my hair for a while. No, you don't have your kinks up for a minute but that reversible - chemicals aren't unless you wait that long time for new hair to grow, or you chop all of it off.
I used to iron my hair everyday and idealize straight hair. but now, because of influences in these past years I started to loove curly hair (and started leaving mine alone). it feels liberating. Basically, role models are really important. the 2010 part of the video made me happy lol

Dear women of other races, When a black woman gets a compliment of beauty in no way, shape, or form does this automatically mean that you are not beautiful too. I know women have a tendency to think this way but it is logically fallacious. #Alllivesmatter was birthed out of this same lack of logical reasoning. Furthermore, just dont come on channels that represent black women--just dont waste your time if it makes you feel some type of way.
@@amerebaby8685 typically when someone says she is beautiful, gorgeous, pretty( towards a black woman) and so on, women of other races feels some type of way. Just because someone is pretty doesn't make another woman not pretty. That thinking was the same thinking that led to alllivesmatter to form. They would say if black lives matter then all lives matter while missing the point of it all. Reread my comment and think about it for a few minutes.

Yes because kinky is tight and coiky curly is less loose you can literally drag your fingers through with out a struggle and your curls bounce back to back
sup mai doods I’ve never heard it be an offensive term, but nappy is more offensive depending on who is saying it and how they using it. But kinky? I don’t think so. 🤷🏾♀️ Because a lot of people call natural hair Kinky-coily” when referring to a specific type of natural hair (type 4)
I am 15, i’m obsessed up 70s/80s fashion, music, movies ect. Just something about it has my heart therefore i’m still rocking my afro puffs and 80s hairstyles lol
Honestly natural hair is beautiful and no one should be forced to wear it another way, or not a job because it's seen as unprofessional, like you want to fire a black man or women because they have an afro, you will have to fight me first.
If you want straight hair, straighten it; if you want curly hair, curl it; if you want puffy hair, puff it; if you want no hair, shave it. Do whatever you want with it, it's yours. Just don't tear someone else down because they don't like wearing the same hairstyles you like.
Hannah T Thank you for taking the time to educate yourself about the differences of others instead of making assumptions and spreading lies like I see a lot of people do. It's most certainly appreciated and comments like yours go along way with POCs
I really liked how black women of the 90s if you check out the lady singers like Aaliyah, Erykah Badu, Janet Jackson, Brandy, Mary J Blige, TLC and many many others took culture and incorporated it into their work and style. It was diverse and displayed variety. I don't see that very often today
I love the 70s Afros and I wear my hair in a huge Fro. I am always getting stopped by people especially the Caucasian people stopping me saying that they love the Fro. Because many people do not see many huge Afros anymore and in my honest opinion I think we the black women look so much better wearing our own hair that is different from other Nationalities.
Its a video about common hairstyles for the time periods and some background information about them, not so much the oppression associated with each decade.
They associated the styles with the reason it was popular in which some of those were a response to oppression, but that wasn't the main focus. It's important to know that though and they could have thrown it in.
I don't think they are talking about the color of the hair itself. They are talking about the styles worn by African American or "black" people over the last century.
I feel like box braids (I think that’s what they’re called) make people look like some sort of Egyptian goddess... Especially when they put those really pretty gold beads on them and twist gold wires around them, it just looks so pretty and goddess like :)

Amere Period what she means is black women are subjected to assimilation. For instance, black women globally are discriminated against in the workplace or get denied jobs because of their natural hair so therefore most just straighten their hair or wear a weave/wig
I am living in europe and i am white. Everywhere i look i see white women killing their hair with irons, colour etc. Its not only the blacks who has to destroy their natural hair. Sometimes it feels like black people are obsessed with racism.
@@Sadune85 actually we call out discrimination just like everyone else does.🤦 The discriminatory action/words that we face is usually under the ugly umbrella called racism. The white women, black,Asian women, etc that do decide to dye their hair do so because they wish too. Or it maybe to get a job, like an actress. If a white women is discriminated against because of her hair then I hope she does speak up and let others know. If a women wants to curly, straight her hair. Then there are many reasons they might do it. One of which is to fit in.... I think it is messed up that some people can get fired, denied, expelled for wearing their own hair in a natural state. Don't you agree?
Love this!! I'm not black but I'm Pacific Islander and I have really big curly hair. This makes me so happy! You have no idea how much I hated my big puffy hair growing up. I always wanted to have long blonde straight hair like the white girls in my class and neighbourhood. When I was in high school I straightened my hair everyday and hated seeing any sign of my natural kink. 3 years ago after being inspired by natural UA-camrs I chopped my hair bit by bit every week till it was just under my ears. Now my hair is just past my mid back and I'm so in love with it! There so much freedom in wearing and loving the hair that grows out of your own head. I look back and the little girl who hated going swimming because her hair would "get big and fuzzy" and it makes me so sad. I'm even starting to lay off the products and love wearing my hair with a bit of its natural frizz. I love the natural movement in the black community and hope it'll transcend into the pacific island one too!

You’re not even trying to listen and do some research. You’re being ignorant. Ya’ll shouldn’t waste your time on this troll.

@@TadanGirl um not sure if you noticed but these hundred year hair videos sometimes tend to focuss one one particular culture/group

This is a true story yall, ask your grandmothers. lol

Jazzy James the reason white washing doesn’t exist is that white people do not claim hairstyles as their own like that. Most white girls do not want to be black.

@@miriamhavard7621 sigh
The ability for us to totally transform our hair is amazing.
Black hair is literally the most versatile hair on Earth. The proof is in the pudding, lol. It's absolutely amazing. ❤️❤️

Eh, not really. What exactly can they do with their hair that anyone else can't? Besides maybe an Afro.
Serene The Bean
Did you just name every random thing off the top of your head? Wigs? Lmao.

So happy we are finally wearing it natural!!!!!!!!!!!!!
more people are going natural yes but most people are still not wearing it natural.. lets be real
Nah you aren't. I live in a city thats 80% black. Everyones got weaves and fake hair.... just cuz youre not perming doesnt mean youre natural.

Dear women of other races,
When a black woman gets a compliment of beauty in no way, shape, or form does this automatically mean that you are not beautiful too. I know women have a tendency to think this way but it is logically fallacious. #Alllivesmatter was birthed out of this same lack of logical reasoning. Furthermore, just dont come on channels that represent black women--just dont waste your time if it makes you feel some type of way.
Christina Schimp what you mean

Good for you. What type of African are you cause I'm curious about some few african black people around the world that I mostly see.

@@jameswest4692 wait wtf it's cultural appropriation!! Black can't have white hair!!! Black people are racist?!?
Mich_L he meant white in color... since when you get ol-never mind.
Sorry y'all missed one. "The Big Chop"

I had to double check! I completely ignored the name of the channel!
black hair it’s still hair!! no one should get hate for having beautiful and unique hair.
So we're just not gonna mention how you couldn't get a job (and still can't in some places) if your hair was not straightened?
Its a video about common hairstyles for the time periods and some background information about them, not so much the oppression associated with each decade.
Yeah it is. Watch the video again.
They associated the styles with the reason it was popular in which some of those were a response to oppression, but that wasn't the main focus. It's important to know that though and they could have thrown it in.
Svetlana Anjuska It's not normal at all. What an idiotic and ignorant thing to say.
Imani Cobia true
Idk why but this made me cry. I've been wearing my coils for 2 years now and I'm happier than ever with my hair
I love being black
I love being white
Ryan White ok good love urself
Ryan White
Go you!!!🙄
Ryan White WOW WE TOTALLY CARE
@@MrVinceMunro Cool. Congrats🙄❤
This is more 100 years of African American hair. Black doesn't just mean African American...
Really...
I don't think they are talking about the color of the hair itself. They are talking about the styles worn by African American or "black" people over the last century.
@Lena Magda Oh, my apologies.
Heart Bleeds Ink wow you incredibly misread that.
Say it louder for the people at the back 🤸🏽♀️AMEN
I feel like box braids (I think that’s what they’re called) make people look like some sort of Egyptian goddess... Especially when they put those really pretty gold beads on them and twist gold wires around them, it just looks so pretty and goddess like :)
xhloe You are talking about egyptians we as black people are really egyptians the homeland of Africa!!
Felisha Phillips Somalia is the homeland of Africa tho :/ that’s where the human race began in Somalia and Ethiopia
Thank you for saying goddess
Svetlana Anjuska that's how you survive in the sun by melanin lord stay in school kids this generation dumb as hell ashamed to be apart of it .
Svetlana Anjuska it's *you* missed punctuations and spelling as well as lack of capitalization sorry honey seems like you're lacking humanity darling .Again I don't belong to your kind I do not come from the caucas mountains nor lived in a cave and was unevolved while everyone else was humans, sweetheart seems like that's apart of your history ,you mad cause you not us and you know your true history as cavemen women( neatherlands) ,otherwise you wouldn't be on this channel I know it sucks to be the only pale hairless species I can speak Espanol too lol ...sucks to be you 😪😊😉😆bye bye! *Opens 🚪👋 for you * 😘toodles!
I'm glad to be African-American
Wow, all the models are so gorgeous 😍😍. I have to say that when I was a little girl, the only kids who were ever nice to me were the African American kids. I'm white, I was the new kid at school, and nobody but they were welcoming and friendly.
CarNation Luv Yep exactly.
SAME!!! i remember my best friends in the 4th grade being black and hispanic. quinella and juielady. i just vibed with them more idk (until they had a fued and i was stuck in the middle lol )
You’re right
Blacks are some of the nicest people on the planet, but that was also our downfall in the past
Same with mine.
+Lucifer Laveaux there's evil people, there's nice people. Race doesn't matter when it comes to who's nice and who isn't
I swear i love my heritage but TAKING CARE OF THE HAIR IS A STRUGGLE 😭
1960 best one
Big Kahona I think the 2000s cornrows was better and the best
1930s and 1950s were also gorgeous
Yup!
Big Kahona agreed
The 70's was beautiful too :)
The Afro IS NOT a symbol of rebellion....it's a SYMBOL of African/Cultural pride....
It *was* a symbol of rebellion
It was at the time, it can be both!
They lived in a time wen that was widely frowned upon and unacceptable, so it was a rebellion to the jive turkeys💀
Spencer Jones 💚💛
Spencer Jones no, it WAS a symbol of both but during the time where it become more relevant, during the black panther times... it was a symbol of breaking away from the Eurocentric fashions
It sucks how Black women are/been suppressed to maintain European features within the beauty aspect.
Black Widow what you mean
Amere Period what she means is black women are subjected to assimilation. For instance, black women globally are discriminated against in the workplace or get denied jobs because of their natural hair so therefore most just straighten their hair or wear a weave/wig
I am living in europe and i am white. Everywhere i look i see white women killing their hair with irons, colour etc. Its not only the blacks who has to destroy their natural hair. Sometimes it feels like black people are obsessed with racism.
@@Sadune85 COnsidering your kind brought racism upon everyone else, how can we not be?
The change in music as per time passes by...just according to the type of decade.. awesome!
Kim H Your comment just made my night . :)
lmfaooo that is so lame !!!!

Zak Mik you probably don't understand so shut up

Get back to me when Negro’s can have straight hair, without straightening it. Or Blonde without dye. I will wait.
Dee Cookie no u
@@finismalorum9746 Per my last email, getting back to you. Negro's? What, tf? There are certain tribes in Africa, where black people naturally have blue eyes and blonde hair and such.
I love that more of us are embracing our natural textures. Most of the women in my family use to relax their hair to make it "manageable". I have put down the creamy crack for more than five years and my crown is flourishing.
AFR0PUNKHEAD13 Im happy that you decided to embrace your hair and break from your families norm, I cant really relate though I've never had relaxer before even though I used to beg my mom for me to get one and now I love my curls
3 years natural

The thought of that heat damage tho!!!
JAW01 sigh and relaxers I saw in a hairdressers video (Brad Mondo on UA-cam) that some girl, not kidding, white girl with fine hair, BLEACHED it, dyed it bright blue, and bought relaxers thinking it'd be good for her hair and it all fell out smh
Y’all talked about baby hairs but I’ve seen none here ma’am

TheseHoES AnitMe The 90’s were filled with baby hairs
