  • There's been some controversy from conservatives in regard to Disney's latest revival The Proud Family Louder and Prouder. Many have dubbed it WOKE stating that the original series was never like this new one. But I'm here to point out how unjustified this controversy is. #theproudfamily #theproudfamilylouderandprouder #disney

To me, the real problem with The End of Innocence wasn't wokeness. It was just Penny's circle of "friends" being horrible as usual. Sadly, blaming Zoey for a man liking for her race, even though it wasn't her fault at all is very much in character for them. This is a problem that viewers of the show had from the beginning of The Proud Family. The Family themselves feel genuine and have depth to them, but compared to most of the other animated Disney shows (a lot of their live action ones have fairly toxic units) Penny's friends have always been accused of being fake. And unlike Amphibia that recognizes the toxicity of Annes friend group and has them fix it, it's hard to tell if Penny's has any interest in getting better. Thus, it's difficult to tell a touchy conflict with them, because their relationship doesn't feel genuine.

Yeah like there should be a actual character development or arc to each on their flaws. The problem with the show itself because they treat everything in it as episodic or slapstick instead of doing something substantial with it. They could for example, could have Michael into a interesting trans character with a story behind him than a character of tokenism.

Yes and no. While Louder and Prouder does has flashbacks from the original show, due to the time placement, small details such as the sudden upgrade in technology (smartphones and other devices), and the fact Penny isn't 16 like at the end of The Proud Family movie. It's not a true direct sequel. This is supported even further by the 2nd season of the reboot. In one of the newer episodes Penny has a dream that she, her family, and Zoe got transported into a Bizarro World filled with clones of everyone. 3 peanut genomes also show up and they reference Dr. Carver from the movie. When Penny wakes and tells this story to Trudy, she assumes Penny is referring to a past nightmare of similar events, specifically the movie. In short the movie gets written off as part of a string of strange nightmares Penny has had involving clones and peanuts.

I think the reason why it’s getting spotlighted as woke now, is because the focus on being woke is heavy at the present. But understand it was in different circumstances back during the early episodes. The show has always been woke but people are now making it a controversy because subjects like critical race theory are a heated political debate as compared to 20 years ago. The controversy was there but it wasn’t getting as much attention at first. It gets more intense now because of social media making more of a topic to be addressed. The woke episodes from 20 years ago could have been easily looked over by the people who didn’t like the subject matter, but it’s almost impossible for them to ignore now. So of course they are ignorant of the show’s past subject matter because woke wasn’t a debatable topic at the show’s prime.

The "colorism" episode in my opinion could've ideally been executed way better, but I guess that's how they wanted it to be, in a sense it's reality to the fullest. This isn't the first time the friend group has thrown shade to one another for getting an "ideal" male, but when Zoey is put on blast by everyone for catching the attention of the guy everyone's fawning for, their true colors show and strike again (excluding Penny). People have the right to like what they like, even based on skin tone, but you shouldn't exclude the opportunity to date a decent person because of it. The groups failure to communicate and explain to Zoey why her dating that guy was a big issue is irritating, they cannot expect someone from outside their race to always know every little thing about the culture; but this way of thinking and lack of communication is pretty common while being innate.
Furthermore, black people CAN be racist, so whatever they put on the script for Maya's dumbass to say just shows what Disney is trying to do, desperately appeal to their audience no matter the cost.

So lighter skinned black people over darker skinned black people would be more accurate. I'm not surprised that they missed that up though. They are generally colorist themselves. Honestly, a lot of shows revolving around black people can never truly show what colorism actually is.

I'll say this in response to ANY criticism of ANY show that has gotten a reboot since 2016 When people say "This show got woke" they're not talking about "This show got woke and it didn't used to be" they're talking how painfully awkward and forced the message is.
There are a few things people are pretty constant with
    1. Changing ANY THING about the design and other details of a preexisting character to force diversity instead of creating an original character.
While changes can work and have worked in the past they can be distracting and at some point it becomes an issue of either
This character is so changed I don't recognize them
    or
I've seen too many changed characters in too short a time and I need a break
Consider Charly Brown. What is we gave him hair? What if we dressed him in a shirt that didn't have the zig zags? What if we made him Hip, Swalve and confident? What if we gave him a brother and a Great Dane and showed his parent's faces and gave them lines and made his dad a dentist? What if he was athletic, buff and good at sports? How many changes can we give him before he's not the same character? Could you look at Charly Brown with thick long, luscious hair and say "This is the same person?" or would it distract you? What if he was an artist who never flew a kite and never plaid sports but he was still a looser? Would it be the same or would it annoy you? And what if you found out that the change was to represent the inclusion of people with hair and that was the only reason? And what if the internet was suddenly flooded with anger bald men? And what if they gave hair to Caillou and Little Bill and Captain Picard? and then people told you to shut up and accept it and stop complaining?
Thats what its like to watch a character be changed over and over and over again.
    2. The messages in Woke TV shows are messages we hear over and over and over aging and again and again every time we turn on the news and if we disagree with that message or we think its a harmful message the last thing we want is to hear it again. These messages come with a slippery slope effect. We keep having to stop doing things that used to be acceptable and change how we do things. It gets annoying
    3. These messages ask us to learn new words, new phrases, a whole new language. The words we used to say every day with no issues are suddenly offensive and not only is it hard to change but people attack us for not changing fast enough
    4. People attack those who don't change with the times. If you don't get with the change of times then those of you who don't change can be labeled some thing negative, you can loose work, loose employment, gain protesters at your house , be forced to watch as your hard work is burned in a fire and as every Hoener you have won is trashed the accomplishments of your life suddenly worthless and every one hates you and wants you to die and you don't even have the freedom to live your life with out harassment or being forced to endure some sort of miss treatment. and you get blamed for all of human suffering.
    5. The hypocrisy a large number of people who soap box will turn around and say hate filled generalizations and stereotypes about OTHER groups that they are not apart of all because a small number of members of that group did some thing wrong and the good deeds of that group are never brought to your attention. Its so easy to raise your self and your people up with pride but to do so a lot of times you have to crush and destroy and belittle other groups to do it. A lot of your kind have hate and ugliness in your hearts and I see it all the time.
    6. the impracticality, the inability to see consequences , the push for a new idea you think is good but its actually bad People wanting ideas that hurt other people, wanting ideas that are bad for animals, wanting ideas that don't FIX the problem but just make them feel good that they tried some thing.
    7. The complete rejection of information we grew up believing as facts. You can't just say some thing and expect us to accept it and we are sick of you spreading misinformation especially when it is easy to disprove . Now we don't have facts rather we have two experts with PHDs who both wrote books who both say they have THE FACTS who are both saying some thing completely different who if fact checked both are right even though this should be impossible. And eventually it becomes a matter of "I reject your reality and substitute my own"
    8. There is a feeling of "you allready have good stuff be happy with it stop asking for more" we have heard you we have changed. To ask for more change will create unbalence. rvenge is not equallity its just more of the stuff you are against.
9 your message targets the few not the many. you go affter the famouse but ignore the little guy. Your not mad at injustice your made at highly publasized injustice.
    10. You are angery over some thing that didn't happen, I can prove it and you need to stop
    All that being said
    1. Characters CAN and HAVE been changed and it DOES work. You Can and we have in the past compleetly changed a story changed out values and changed our soical norms from what they used to be at one time.
    2. Messages of morales and values and what is right to do are needed and they NEED to be spread all over all the time becuase parents don't teach them.
    3. New imformation is found all the time and old ways need to be challenged and new ways need to be accsepted
    4. people will always be diferent even in a world where every one is the same
    5. many values will offten contradict each other at least on the surface.
6 people do need to respect each other more there are still groups who get treated unfairly
7 there are unfair systems that need change things can be better
    8. any one who knows history knows socialy accspted norms were very diferent and knows that change doesn't end the world
    9. Some times being right means going to jail, suffering and even letting them kill you knowing that change may never happen in your life time
    10. People don't follow lies. People follow what they belive is true. No matter how you disagree in there hearts, people follow truth. The truth can not be silent It will spread and it will never respect that you and your people live a diferent truth with equall passion. Making a world where the is only one oppinion, the right one, is impossble. a 2nd diferent way to see things will always rise. Change does not end the world nor does it improve it. it simple changes it. how you live now will not be the same as life 100 years from now nor is it the same as 100 years in the past. You can't please every one so you gotta please your self.
good messages need to be said in a format they will be listened to. They need to be respectfull, mindfull of cosiquences, practical, and nondestructive.
when you say a message with the midle finger raises and a torch in your hand people don't want to hear you. If you say your message with a soft gental tone thats willing to hear other persepctives people will respect that.

Its also because its blatant political propaganda. Shows back then used to be far more nuanced and well written in displaying their messages, dunno why these guys think they were being hush and not allowed to express themselves, nah thats not it at all. Yeah a lot of shit made back then had messages, I get it. But the big difference is that it was presented in a far more better and tasteful way, and was presented in a way that made it relatable and digestible to everyone. These messages that are shown in today's cartoons aren't unifying, they're divisive.

The Proud Family was always a franchise tackling serious issues. The difference is that the original show was a product of the 2000s decade. It was a time where networks wouldn't allow their shows to literally state the obvious about certain things, so that show needed to be as subtle as possible. Claiming all African Americans deserve reparations for the pain and suffering they personally didn't go through while ignoring the fact that other races including white people were also enslaved and that other races including Africans owned slaves, trying to teach white kids they should "atone" for something they weren't apart of and the inaccuracy of saying that Slaves built the country.
The original series tackled serious issues much better without unfairly demonizing an entire race of people because of the past, or teaching kids to obsess over someone else's dating habits or teaching kids their skin color is always and the only determining factor of how privileged someone is.

Jokes and funny characters with heart and charm were the hook and what I watched the show for. I disagree entirely. Yes, the original show was political. HOWEVER, what was considered progressive then is different from now. Back in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s, it was progressive for people of differing backgrounds to get along, and even take interest in each other's worlds. Today, progressive means to separate people in different spaces, both culturally and physically, and demand that people stay in their lanes. So, while the show was political, it was of a different nature.
Not to mention, the show was meant to teach moral lessons to kids. Though, I'd argue that in the current series, they go against these morals for political motivated reasons. For example, "Colorism" episode with Noah Barker. A guy walks into a school, asks a girl out, and suddenly he's racist and the girl is a traitor to the friend group. Basically, these 4 mean girls accuse an innocent person of racism with no proof, start a vicious rumor, and bully their friend into giving an opportunity just because it wasn't for them. Rumors, bullying, and false accusations, the top 3 things that give me anxiety. These were things the original show told audiences not to be involved with, and the new show actively has them doing it because of political reasons. That's bad.
As for that "reparations" thing, that was during an episode where Dijoney was dating the dude on the opposing debate team. She was trying to outdo him. Then in the Juneteenth episode, they do some product placement for white fragility.
I have no problem with shows that tackle social issues. But when they're done to make someone else look bad, used to push a product, get back at someone over being slighted, or simply just done badly, I'd rather them not talk about it at all. If I were to describe this season, I'd say it's petty, mean spirited, and willing to do exactly what the original show told us not to do for political reasons. In fact, if I were black (which I'm not), I'd be as embarrassed about this show as I actually am about Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon.
Above all, I don't think the show is any good. Not because it's political, but in how it handles political issues.

I'm a black man, and I'm also gay, and my opinions and thoughts do lean towards the conservative side.
Saying that, I'm sorry but...I have to respectfully disagree with you.
The proud family was initially a wonderful show, that included people of varying races, getting along, respecting one another (minus whatever the deal was with Pennys friends but that's a whole other issue) It did hit on some hot topics here and there, but there was never any animosity aimed at one particular race, blaming that entire race for the actions of one or several individuals...that kind of mentality that the show is displaying now, is just reprehensible.
The episode where they ostracize Zoey JUST for being white, was just disgusting...a real friend, heck a decent human being, would NEVER do that, THAT'S racism. I don't know what it is with peoples definition of 'racism' being so skewed, that somehow it only exclusively includes white people, and no other race can be capable of those thoughts, I'm sorry but that's BS, and it's really sad you've been blinded by whatever mentality it is that has people not even knowing the true definition of racism is anymore.
But the Zoey episode, and the 'slaves built this country' thing, isn't even the worst offense...the worst offense, is the gay couple.
No couple, gay OR straight would treat one another that way, and if they did, you can bet they'd be broken up several times over. A person who loved another person, wouldn't GUILT another person over their race...you did watch the black gay character doing that right? Because I'd almost accuse you of being the one who was asleep if you didn't identify that blatant guilt tripping and mental abuse as somehow being 'acceptable' in a childrens cartoon, or ANY form of media for that matter that was original intended to teach kids/young adults how to treat one another.
This just further proves Disney only put a gay couple in there to further their own, rather twisted agendas...they have no concept nor care of how a gay couple actually works (and here's a hint, they work the same as a straight one) Bing in a relationship with a person of an different race myself, the very idea that I would ever callously shove a book at someone, intending to make them feel guilty about what race they are...makes me physically Ill, and it really should bother other people to that extent too.
tl;dr, No, the proud family wasn't always 'woke', you've just become complacent with their extremist social choices like so many others have, and it's really sad.

Why should only black people get reparations when other races were also enslaved? Why should white people be the only ones paying reparations when they weren't the only ones that owned slaves? Sense slavery is still happening in some areas of Africa & China to this day should every single african/african american and Asian feel personal guilt and responsibility for the horrible actions of someone else just because they share a skin color?

No. The original show had MUCH better writing and when they talked about sensitive topics like racism or just sharing other worldviews that many people might not know or understand, they actually did their research and handled it in a mature way.
Take the "Juneteenth" episode. They were completely WRONG about slavery and clearly didn't do their research. I remember doing a research paper all the way back in high school about slavery and Louder and Prouder got it WRONG. Below is a link to a video of a lady explaining it in more detail.
Proud Family was always woke, but Louder and Prouder has shitty writing and that is why it's getting a lot of complaints. People didn't complain as much about the original show cuz the writing was so much better.

I know I late to comment but I understand where people dislike of the reboot of proud family is coming from. It wasn’t because of subjects matter discuss through series because in original version they did the same thing. Instead it how they approach the audience with the it. As a viewer it felt like being blame, hated and attacked for someone else decisions. Which gave me the side eyed fill with hypocrites toward the show. 😒
Secondly none of us was born before modern times or at least the early 2000s. Therefore I don’t think think any of us woke up asking for those people in their past lives to make those decisions. Instead they decided for themselves just like in real lives. So wouldn’t be better to hold those people accountable separately and individually of their wrongdoings instead of blaming a collective of entire different generation.
Just saying because how penny and her friends was basically bashing people with the same genes annoyed hell of me. Especially since the dude Garry if I correct didn’t know one of his ancestors was slave masters and didn’t ask for it himself. Seriously the dude wasn’t even born so how it his fault ?

    “Slaves built this country.”
As soon as they ousted the monarchy, northern states started outlawing slavery within a year of independence and as late as 30 years.
The individual governance system the usa was founded on, to avoid a tyranny down the line, lead to the south maintaining their slaves until the north couldn’t stand for it anymore and went to war with the south to free the slaves. For some weird reason the north gets blamed for the actions of the south.
It’s annoying seeing that get smothered over so frequently. As soon as we WERE a country we immediately started working on human rights and ending slavery, but because half of the states didn’t wanna play ball until we marched on them we ALL get the blame. 🙄

I Think there's a disconnect here. I am not not a Conservative by any means. However, I have seen the scene and it does have some problems. The scene does dismiss every other groups involvement in building this country. Which is insulting. Yes, Black Slaves were reasonable for building up the cotton trade of the South. That's fact. To deny that is to deny history and the suffering of a people. However to ignore all the suffering of immigrants in the north that worked dangerous jobs that left them maimed and killed them is also an insult. Lots of people built this country and they suffered greatly for it. I think that's where people like myself are coming from it's ignoring other terrible things that happened to other people because that doesn't fit a Narrative. I understand what the writers are going for I just feel they did a poor job executing it.
So this episode just feels like, and I don't think this was the message at all by the way, your pain doesn't matter. What happened to your people is not important so shut up. Which I think is what people are seeing. Which we have had about a decade now of both the Left and the Right saying that exact same thing, over and over again. People are tired of that message. So they have became very sensitive to it.
My family doesn't have a long history in the US. They came over after WWI from Hungry, where they were more, or less Surfs for the Austria-Hungary Empire. Then when they came here, they were treated like out casts because their people started the greats war seen by the world up to that time. So yeah my people have face hardships for a very, very, very, long time and didn't really stop until after the fall of the USSR. We lost family to the Nazis, and the Communist. So for people like myself to get a message that pain doesn't matter is frustrating.
On the other hand, it's frustrating to have someone go, "Yes, but!" So I think that this has all boiled down to people just being so angry, about past injustice done to them and their people. They want to be heard, but they are not listening to each other at the same time. So it just becomes this shouting match where nothing gets done. There is a lot to talk about when it comes to the problems of today and I think we need to sit down as a people, talk and listen. We have more in common that we don't. Then again I am third Generation Hungarian what do I know.

Dude, you do realize the north had had slaves ,not just the south. The economic value of the 4 million slaves in 1860 was, on average, $1,000 per person, or about $4 billion total. That was more than all the banks, railroads and factories in the U.S. were worth at the time.

    • @owenslaughter9438

@@xblade149 Yeah, but they were not nearly as plentiful, as they were in the the south. a family might have one, or maybe two slaves that might work a garden, or as a house servant. However it was no where near the operations that were in the south that be came reliant on slaves to run the cotton industry. Then the north became free states which lead to the mad dash to bring in new states into the country there were free, or slave states. The Macy Dixon line became a thing that separated free and slave states. Which then built the pressures between the north and the south towards war.
Again This is what I am talking about. People are forgetting facts, because it is inconvenient to a narrative. I am not agreeing that slavery is good. It's bad. again SLAVERY IS BAD. is that clear enough for you to hear the rest of my message?

I know I am late, but this video is amazing.
I agree with most of what you said. I am just straight up tired these so called “fans” who claim that @the og series wouldn’t do this”, but you know they probably never watched the show to begin with. It happened with Kim Possible and now Proud Family because most people never rewatch the show to begin with. I remember the Kim Possible live action movie-that I view as a reboot because the original series started with Kim and Ron at 15/16 while movie is 14. The “fans” were upset that Kim was being jealous of a robot girl and thought it was out of character. It wasn’t to me because Kim is known in the original series to have perfectionist mind set and when she can’t get basic things or is being challenged, she gets jealous and will get competitive. That’s who she is.
I said it before in your community tab, but the fact that the writers are now being given more freedom to tell the stories they want to tell is awesome. They’ve always wanted to tell it, but the 2000s wouldn’t let them touch it, but now they can yet people are afraid of the truth.
To me, conservatives are just afraid to face the truth or because how people would logically hate you because you’re racist, they have hide behind words of “the original show wouldn’t do this” because they think it’s a defense. It’s not and it’s flimsy at best.
At this point I make a point of those “claim”to remember the series of any show and those who actually watched it.
I personally want to praise how the writers improved on doing Asian characters in the reboot as the original series is very controversial. Though I’d wish Penny apologized to the siblings but I guess that’ll have to wait till next season.
    This is an amazing video.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to introduce triggering or uncomfortable (I think would be the right word?) topics for kids heck kids shows have been doing it for YEARS Sesame Street being an example with its episodes on Death,Autism and Divorce along with HIV! And they all were handled I’d argue decently well and in a rather mature way kids can still understand.
And that’s where I think this series falls flat on its face it tries to introduce to these sorts of topics around mainly race issues in the present and from the past and it just doesn’t do that in the right way to me. It finds an issue and builds an episode around that not trying to mix it well into the story at all!

Ik he is talking about conservatives being the most sensitive because they are the most bigoted. I know that it's the social connotation of the word. But people tend to misuse the term triggered. And unintentionally mock disabled people. I'm not hating on this UA-camr or anyone else who has used it this way. I just want to educate people about this terminology as it was meant when used to talk about people, to describe something that people with PTSD deal with. It's in the DSM-5 in the category about PTSD. It's actually supposed to be medical terminology for cPTSD or Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It's real definition is something that triggers PTSD symptoms. Usually consistently. A good example of it being used as it was intended in a sentence would be "Jessica saw a man who looked similar to her former abuser. This triggered a panic attack." Or "The sound of fireworks is a trigger for disassociative symptoms forJames. Because he is a combat veteran. That's why he doesn't want to go the the firework show." I have cPTSD btw. That's how I know this. I know there will be some people who don't care and will misuse it regardless because that's the internet. It's inevitable. But to everyone willing to listen with an open mind. Thanks for reading this. Have a great day.
