  • In this episode I talk about the latest episode of Moon and Devil Dinosaur that tackles the subject of Gentrification. This is not something you expect disney of all companies to discuss at all so I wanted to go over how it handles the issue.

The grand majority of ''woke'' cartoons do. It's one of the reasons the Alt-Right feel the need to fight them. They're scared of the fact that the ideals of the past no longer matter to the world at large.

Gotta love them explicitly stating that the muzzlers were gentrifying the LES. There’s a time for metaphors but sometimes that can be a way to provide plausible deniability for a message. Owning the position with your whole chest takes way more courage.

Absolutely. It shows in a beautifully forthright, yet subtle way how gentrification is essentially a force of white supremacy and capitalism, which have always been intricately linked in America.
It takes advantage of existing economic inequality, and promises to pump wealth into the community, but really they're just annexing territory for corporate gains and suburbs, as white supremacist capitalism is wont to do.
I also love how they give a hopeful message about how the ultimate weapon against this parasitic encroachment is for the community to come together and assert its right to self-governance and autonomy.

One part I particularly enjoyed is how they tackled people in power being complicit - in this case, the Mayor felt hesitant to back out of the deal because he didn't want to admit he had indirectly done all of this damage to his own community by allowing the Mufflers to gentrify it. It's only when Moon Girl rallied up the community that the Mayor gained the courage to join them.

What I really love so much about animation aiming at children is how its pushing further into these kind of topics that people thought its only something for adults to discuss and debate about. We see more shows present LGBTQIA+ representation, trauma, racism, etc., because the fact that kids are smarter than they look and knows what is wrong in this world and want to make things better. Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur go further with that episode about gentrification, along with another one about Black Girls hair, and maybe more to come and they did it in the best way they can.

As someone previously unfamiliar with the term "gentrification" it's so interesting to me how what u describe it as and what it's described as in a wikipedia article r 2 completely different processes. Wikipedia describes it as "new people moving into backwater neighbourhoods of the city, renovating it, restoring it, making it attractive to tourists and increasing quality of life there", which r all good things. And I guess this would be good, had the newcomers respected the traditions of those who already live in there. And I like how the show basically explains that. But what u r describing (and what ended up happening in the show) feels less like "new people move in and make the economy more stable" and more like "a corporation suddenly takes interest in a real estate in the neighbourhood and ruins everyone's life to get it". And despite the fact that I'm unfamiliar with the term, I'm very familiar with such situations. I live in Kyiv and on a square near my home there used to be a line-up of small stands with various bussinesses. Coffee shops, hand-made, barber shops etc. I never used them but I always saw people hanging out there shopping. I always thought they could use some decorations, but I could see the usefullness they brought to others. Actually no, our family did buy fish from a stand there. It was a fine fish for a price like nowhere else. But then 1 day when I went to catch a tram to school I saw that all those stands were demolished. Only a bunch of plastic and glass was left behind. But the worst part was that the shop owners weren't even allowed to save their goods before it happened, so among the ruins there lied strings, needles, toys, pieces of equipment etc. A truly depressing picture. Now there's a bussiness center and a small green zone with a fountain on that square. I used to enjoy that fountain and the bussiness center looks pretty cool, but I can't stop thinking abt all the people who owned those shops or worked there. What happened to them?

I also love this episode for how Moon Girl relies on and uses the community. The idea of her using noise to defeat the villain speaks a lot since it is noise politics that is used by protesters especially those of black and brown communities to disrupt the business of those in power like politicians or capitalist. The use of noise speaks to a deeper idea within the series which is that music has deep cultural resonance for black and latinx communities because of it's historical ties to expression even as that expression is criminalized at different points. Finally, I like that it also speaks to the racial dynamics at play here. It's making a subtle statement about how minority communities get coded as loud whereas white communities are quiet and peaceful; Although when you see it through the eyes of the people being affected it is unjust because their expression is being policed.

Very interesting how they're shown pretty explicitly as tech bros. The way I've seen a lot of cities go is to make themselves prime real estate for tech companies, at the cost of not just existing industries, but mostly at the expense of local citizens. Look at how big the bidding war was for american cities to try and draw the new amazon HQ to their city was, massive tax breaks and land grants for amazon with little to no revenue actually going to the city, and without much actually going towards the citizens. It's even worse with cities trying to be "innovation centers" like silicon valley. Most startups are probably going to crash and burn, and even the ones that work well have no real product, no real impact on the local community. Sure, it's a consequence of our highly financialized economy, especially here in new york, but the idea that these startups will be our salvation is becoming more and more prevalent among the powerful. This sort of situation doesn't only happen here, it's gonna be more and more prevalent as long as our economy stays this way.

This is one of the episodes that I had this slightly skimmed through because the villains get on my nerves everything else was fantastic I love the rest of the episode maybe it's because I've actually met villains like those. Or watch the news too much I mean they are slightly more human than Mark Zuckerberg who I swear is that Android! Built by an alien race that has no concept of emotional displacement. But yeah this screams exactly what corporate CEO's are like which is not understanding how money works, purposely putting out products that are terrible, and finally the real reason why I say gentrification is just a new word for the word corporate ghost town because they were doing everything they can to make sure that nothing stays! I mean they wanna get rid of the roller ring and cut out all the music that towns like somebody who has not even understand the concept of living in a neighborhood I live out in the boonies and I know what it sounds like with music and pop sounds! And half of these gentrification people always want to make tourist towns without understanding in the big budget that comes from tourists is hotels which you don't have in your gentrification design 95% of the time, with the atmosphere of a restaurant where people can sit and talk with the locals and get to know the culture you know the thing that people go to vacations to enjoy not to see mark zuckerberg's attempt to understand human interaction. Again listening to the news kind of helps but yeah I love the episode.

As someone whose experienced living in neighborhood that has been gentrified and has looked over the economic aspect of it, it is certainly a mixed bag. On one hand, neighborhoods/districts targeted for gentrification are provided better funding, initiatives designed to make streets cleaner and safer, and overall helps businesses within the district by making the place more appealing to visit. However, the biggest issue comes with housing, and the supply/demand shift that potentially affects the community within these areas. Then it's further exasperated by increased local taxes from the initial funding, causing property values to increase, thus increasing rent and home prices. This eventually displaces the local community, including businesses that can't keep up with these new costs. I have seen some methods of mitigating this issue, especially in New York (though they're obviously not good at it), where they will subsidize new housing units (condos, apartments and townhouses) with the promise that they set aside a portion of them for low income buyers/renters.
As I mentioned, it's not perfect, and unfortunately we've found ourselves in a trend that can't be stopped for the most part. Cities years back were far more populated with your average working class family, with wealthier folks living in the edges (the suburbs) or further out. It's just recently that we seem to have a larger uptick of young professional, most upper-middle/low-upper class, moving into these cities. All in all, as much as it's easier to point at larger corporate entities driving out small communities, it's more accurate to say that it's multiple economic forces driving these changes. Simply put, everybody wants to live in the city (either by changes in generational desires or convenience), big companies understand that so they move their assets to these cities, the cities get a boost of money and begin improving local neighborhoods, and then things consequentially get more expensive.

Tbh gentrification usually gets me mad, since a lot of people from other countries dare to como to my country (I'm from Mexico) and force everyone to adapt to them instead of doing it the other way. The worst? Whitexicans (people from Mexico that have more money than the average) support these people and make less the majority of the people, saying things like "well if you don't agree with it, work for it! Stop complaining, you lazy dude, and work for it!" Oh yeah, of course I wanna work more than what it's supposed, not getting paid extra hours, making enough for survival while my area is slowly rising prices to adapt to the new outsiders :D

I hope about an episode where lunella fights Ultron and they discuss the topic of the beauty of diversity against the oppressing harmony brought by being the same in every aspect.
    Like something like this.
Lunella" you think you can convert all people into machines to bring unity? That's not unity, it is forcing everyone into following what you think it's right! The world needs diversity, it is beautiful and makes us who we are!"
Ultron " you speak of the same diversity that causes conflicts and wars, the two of us are fighting because we are different. Mankind doesn't know how to handle diversity, you are ready to tear each other apart simply because one says right and the other left and then you hipocritically complain about the chaos!, You want order and freedom but you cannot balance the two. Why do you think crime exists? Some of you are so obsessed with their own freedom that they claim even the one that belongs to the others."
Lunella"I never said that diversity was easy and neither is unity for that matter, but one doesn't have to compromise the other so much, we can be different and still have harmony accept each other as individuals and grow by confronting ourselves with other people. you are a smart artificial intelligence I am a smart human being, can't you see what we could do by working together while appreciating and learning from our differences instead of fighting?.
Lunella extends a hand. Ultron think for a moment but then point a his laser hand at her. "I'll never choose your chaos over order"

Look if I can be honest I LOVE Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur I think the show is one of Disney's best and they clearly know what they're doing...but at the same time with Disney being the way they are with animation right now... I wouldn't be surprised if MG&DD fell under the same curse as other Disney animated cult favorites as it gets axed off too soon... I'd love to be proven wrong but I dunno what do you guys think?

It's hard to guarantee your show's future when it's not a consistent top seller, even doing fine often doesn't cut it, Star vs the Forces of Evil and Howl House were both pretty popular but they just cut them short because they don't make the same money stuff like the MCU does, and unlike anime they refuse to commit to the investment that would make them far more profitable as if it can't be done even though Anime proved time and time again that animation franchises can compete with box office juggernauts, companies are very risk averse so they'll get rid of anything that isn't guaranteed to make billions for years to come, the social commentary might scare them because they fear it could turn people off, but even shows that play it extra safe aren't safe from early cancellation.

I honestly thought the villains were laid on a bit thick, but I understand that the word trying to portray the idea that this is too good to be true, and that these gentrification forces seem too perfect at first. I can also tell that there is some anime influence with how the characters act, and how self indulgent they are. I guess using this exaggerated image gets the point across about gentrification without needing to be completely realistic. They still cover the points that they are trying to cover. And for a long time, my main perception about gentrification was that it makes the cost of living on affordable for those who already lived there, and the only people who can afford it now are the richer people that move in. But this episode made it clear That this is a cultural thing as well. Yes, if you couldn’t tell from that last statement, I don’t have a lot of firsthand experience with gentrification. Interestingly, I do work for a natural food company that tries to be the better example. We want to improve how things are done, but we don’t want to ruin what is already there. In fact, we try to support local vendors wherever we go, but of course we aren’t going to support something unhealthy. We try to be an asset to every community that we enter.

I think it can be summed up as _"You want things to improve, but at the same, don't want anything to change"_
Things can't improve unless changes are made, but most people against gentrification are against the very concept, and thus those neighborhoods tend to stay downtrodden, crime ridden, and destitute. Alot of people say that the culture in those areas are worth preserving, but as anyone who has studied the progression of culture can tell you, not all cultural norms are beneficial or worth preservation, for instance the Ancient Chinese attitude that they were the center of the universe and the best at everything lead them to isolating themselves and eventually got them conquered by Western Powers
While other nations, such as Japan, Scotland & Ireland studied what successful cultures were doing and made massive changes to accommodate, which at times did in fact include gentrification. Even modern day Paris is the result of a massive city wide Gentrification Project by Emperor Nepoleon III, which majorly improved both the architecture, sanitation and the quality of life in Paris
But the people living in the LES don't seem to want do anything to improve their neighborhood, but rather just complain about the problems it faces, for instance, in the Pilot, everybody complains about the blackouts, but nobody seems to try and do anything about it, not even just buying some back-up generators so that they can run their events or keep their businesses running, instead they just sit around whining while insisting that noone wants to help them

Gentrification isn’t about improving. It’s about about displacement. With big changes, are bigger costs. Poor neighborhoods can “improve”. The poor people don’t suddenly improve with it. When big business comes in, small businesses close down. When fancy building go up, poor buildings go down and so do the people inside who can’t afford the new rent. Who asked for those changes? No one! They were fine with their small businesses and affordable buildings. People have simple requests, such as fixing the blackouts (which is the responsibility of the government to fix, which is why they are voicing their concerns instead of taking time out of their busy tax-paying day to fix it themselves), but completely redoing the neighborhood ISN’T the solution. Fixing things a little at a time is. Supporting small business. Using those funds to address the issues that the neighborhood brings up. When people talk about the “culture” it means their way of life is now obsolete in that neighborhood. Imagine the buildings you to go every day are torn down, possibly even your place of work. Your hobbies are also viewed as odd now when it was once widely accepted.
Considering culture and adding a few things at a time is good, but it rarely happens. Gentrification is the process of wealthy people radically changing neighborhoods, often making it conform to what they want it to look like, which attracts other wealthy people. That’s not to say there aren’t benefits. Crime rates go down in gentrified neighborhoods! Good? No. That’s because they forced people out so the crime rate went up somewhere else. Literally nothing was solved, the “problem” was just moved. You can’t rapidly improve neighborhoods without casualties. That’s what’s being complained about when people talk about gentrification.
Quick fixes don’t exist, and not all change is good. Also, 10,000 Parisians have left Paris every year for the last 10 years, and there is a huge homelessness crisis.

If you want to stop gentrification then protest for changes for the housing market to be fixed and not the very concept of gentrification. Merely protesting gentrification isn’t going to help and isn’t actually fixing the problem and it’ll just move the problem somewhere else.

Gentrification? What a new word for an old concept of "Tradition vs Progress" there's always a fine line between Do we preserve an old historic building? Or do we put in a new modern one? That conflict has been around in many shows. Fidler on the Roof, Hey Arnold, Recess, Doug, Waltons, Little House, Who Framed Rodger Rabbit, Tiny Toons, etc. With out progress we would still be on the telegraph and the tolly. But over do it and your town looses the nice little touches.
We see it modernly too. The push by Green Energy to tear down old buildings and put up ones that waist less energy. Social Distancing killed a TON of small businesses. So too will the Electric car. But some things we need to change, to let go of. We need Wi-Fi we need computers we need handicap ramps. We need High ways, Magnetic ramps, EZ Pass.
In my Town we have lost farms , we lost small business, we lost movie theaters , all sorts of things. On Line Shopping, Covid, Social Distancing, Shopping from home, Streaming its all killing us. New Malls killed the old Mall. On Line shopping killed the new mall. Toys R us is gone, sears is gone. Movie theaters are closed.
There is some thing to be said for cleaning up your dirty junky Neiborhood. If you love your community, take care of it. When people see a clean building they respect it. When people see a broken window they break more windows. When people see graffiti they make more graffiti.
when people see litter they add more litter. But No one wants to be the 1st to litter.
and respect your history. Sto destroying and burning your works of art out of ignorance.
an other thing about business is if you have a BIG place open everyone drives there. They drive past the smaller places and try to get to the end as fast as possible. if your on the road side between two tourist attractions no one wants to slow down and stop. They want to keep going.
You also have to keep the effort to keep your lots clean and full of weeds and stuff
an other thing that slows down community building is fear of teenagers. A lot of people assassinate teenagers with destructive behavior and they don't want to build some thing just to get it trashed.
We need to teach respect. Respect for bathrooms, walls, other peoples property, art, nature. Too many idiots breaking things trying to get selfies.
if we put the community to work and made them responsible for maintenance we would have better communities. Make it legal for average joes to repair public property if you can't be bothered.
I saw after a hurricane hit the community fixed every thing up not the city. It was nice.
and also we need to stop giving money to other countries and put America 1st Walk among our own people, see issues 1st hand. Not the sanitized show they put own for tours see the real world Make changes and make them last don't put on a front for the cameras. Let places that are not America solve there own problems and make the mayors and governess and senators and vice presidents walk on foot threw South Filly and NY and Chicago
and stop voting against the other party and rejecting them because there not you. Start doing what's right.
and learn that Infostructure means bridges and roads NOT woke ideas. Fixing things is about practicality and doing what's right no about doing the opposite. and having good things in your community, it also means raising taxes or having some other way to raise funds giving your self more money won't help. Give other people money. You want better education, health care, roads etc some one has to pay for it. Or some one has to do the job for less. Stop protesting and start doing. You know what's NOT happening when you picket? Getting jobs done.

@@DIGITALGH05T another problem is jobs don't take employees. They ask for five or more years prior experience which new workers don't have. Then they make you take a personality test to weed out any one whose not polite and upbeat , they don't offer any on the job training, no apprenticeships, and have a bias to certain genders and body types and they also do the shady practice of heiring people willing to work for less and some places even want you to be healthy or free of drugs, young etc Those who want more money may want to consider self employment. Also being paid more money raises the prices of things we buy. Its also upsetting to see free room and board go to illegal immigrants and criminals and people over seas, and not the homeless and poor. If more places were run like a university, an army base or Disney World we would have clean spaces, house, food, jobs for every one. Prisons have free beds, free food, free health care, free exercise and no taxes. People who come over the boarder get hotels. We could build homes for people with zero income and let them live there and be fed for zero money in exchange for unpaid labor until they are able to save money and move out but we don't do that.
The thing that is wrong with "Woke" ideas is they want to force them on us with no thought of HOW they work. We have Electric Cars but NO charging stations. Solar plants replace forests, spaces that could be used to house humans are sacrificed to house wolves and lions Guns are taken away from us leaving us open to attacks from both man and beast.
Conservative values ignore problems and pretend doing nothing and going back to how it used to be will make life better. They also tell people to work harder, work smarter and make there own money and to stop expecting Government to solve your problems for you We need to acknowledge problems and offer solutions that work that don't take away rights and reward hard work but also make getting work possible.
right now we are burned by a war between two sides who only want what the other side doesn't want. We need to start doing what is clearly right, like NOT raising land value just because the land got "Nicer" and stop complaining that a wind farm "Lowered you land value and made it ugly"
make it illegal to not own a home and illegal not to provide a home All poor propel need is a bedroom and a bathroom and a mailing address. Thats not an expensive thing to give them.
