  • Black representation in Animation always had a shaky and just plain gross history. But in our current age of animation we started having a great emergence of black characters as well as black creatives. Many Black Youths found new and old characters to connect with. #BlackRepresentation #BlackCartoons #animation

As a Black man, I find it very important to be able to see people of my skin tone to beon the big and small screen. To be the hero or the villain, to be the quirky friend or the friend you can have a heart to heart with. To be the mother, the father, the brother, sister, the aunt, the uncle and so on. This allows for many to feel like they are just as valid as everybody else. What does representation mean for all of you?

Late but, diversity helps breathe orginality, helps people feel like theyre seen. But I never felt seen. Im a black nigerian, but monoracial albino (slightly bad eyes, not really snow white but fair skinned). I lost my identity due to only watching white cartoon character who didnt look exactly the same as me, and I lost the appreciate for my nigerian culture because I felt undeserving of it. I think now after watching some of your vids, im ready to embrace myself and my blackness. my small broad nose, my annoying 4c hair, and even my fair complexion because black comes in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Im persuing art and animation and want to have characters who I can relate to and hopefully others can too.

@@alexslusher16I see what you’re trying to say HOWEVER as a black person and a brown skinned person in general, seeing characters that on screen that look like us really makes a difference . Growing up, the only representation I had were white/Caucasian and fair skinned characters with straight hair. That’s not to say that I couldn’t relate to them or their stories. However, as a brown skinned person, Eurocentric beauty standards can really affect your self esteem. A simple “look in the mirror” can’t just fix that, because sometimes when looking in the mirror , we are reminded of what society does not like about us whether that be our skin color, hair texture or facial features . That’s why POSITIVE representation matters, and not creating (harmful) stereotypes and caricatures in media of any race really.

I didn't wanna be a copy cat and pic someone they touched on?? But to... help get my own pick? I Google black cartoon characters, and was reminded of number 5 from KND! She was with a group of mostly white kids? But vibed with EVERYONE and never like... dropped her blackness... she was always just... her. She's loyal, bad ass, "cool" but still down to earth, lowkey has a temper and goofy? But real as hell. And like, I'm a 25 year old GUY but... I vibe with all that cause, the energy matches... I started this comment around the time the AMV outro started and the clip of her and her sister played... that 3 second little bit capped it for me and... I'm super glad I was reminded of her now, and that I picked her to go off about... makes my heart happy. Thanks for picking this topic and lowkey leading me to this... that might be sappy, but I'm stoned and it's my truth. Stay up bro!!

She was smart as hell, knew how to fight, she was probably the only one Numbuh 1 completely trusted to run things in his absence, had a interesting sibling rivalry with Cree, had her sweet moments. She never reminded me of a shitty black stereotype.

Peter Parker will always be my favorite spiderman, but I really enjoyed Miles in Into the Spiderverse. He's a creative, someone who doesn't go with the normal flow of things. I would say my favorite thing about him is his ability to learn and grow. By the end of the movie, he is Spiderman. In the beginning, he never wanted to be. He struggles along the way, but he gets there. His dad really was right about the spark he has. I'm really interested to see what they do with him in the sequels (Gwen and Pete as well).

My favorite black character is Tiana from Princess and the Frog. I reallly admire Tiana for her passions and kind personality. At my age, I wanted to be a chef. As a person who is considered as white, (Although I never considered myself to be white but idk Im Middle Eastern.), I first watched that film when I was like 3 and watched over and over again for years. Tiana was a huge inspiration for me. She was determined, diligent and I loved her relationship with her family. I had a black teacher in primary school and I always associated her with Tiana. Tiana kinda created the image of black women in my mind, since I didnt known any black people other than my teacher. I remember being shocked when I learnt how slavery and racism actually works, when I was like 9. We definetely need more black represantation like her.

Yo, this was great! I've been working on a bio piece on Dwayne McDuffie (creator of Static and the other Milestone characters) for the channel I work with (Watchtower Database) and one quote that I keep coming back to of his is “My biggest issue - generally in writing main-stream comics is if you write a black character, he represents ‘blackness,’ and that’s ridiculous! If you write a white character, he’s ‘that guy.’ Ya know, you could be Superman. You could be Lex Luthor. But if you’re black, you’re all black people. Good guy, bad guy, and anything in between.” It warms my heart seeing how much the tables have been turned since then!

I enjoy seeing black characters, (there have been a lot of cool designs and I've saved many of them lol.) But with that said, I still haven't had one that has given me the feeling of being completely seen. The closest, being Miles, from into the spider verse. But even though i love his character. Its not completely the same thing as feeling seen.

As a black man who grew up in the West Side of Chicago, representation is very important to me. I want to see more of the ordinary protagonists who grew up in less than desirable environments becoming the heroes who achieve great things and inspire those around them to be great as well. It would show that it doesn't matter where you come from, but the choices we make and the actions we take shape us into who we are. We can become great as long as we believe in ourselves and be the best versions of ourselves. That's why I want to make my webcomics into epic stories worth reading.

Hopefully somebody can explain it to me in a way that I can understand it better because I'm still a little bit confused as to why this is so God damn important to the black community. At least when it comes to fictional media and not history. I mean he did say representation across the board so I'd imagine this would include history. But I feel like when it comes to representation history should be the number one priority. Why is seeing a fictional cartoon who looks like you the top priority? Especially since that mind you is a main focus of this video and usually that discussion of representation in general when it comes to media. Not just cartoons but fictional characters in general.
At first I thought it was because y'all wanted a representation of the black experience but from some of these examples I've heard that's not always the case. I mean it was for some of them. Such as The boondocks which is an absolutely great show and Huey was one of my favorite characters going up. I'm not even black and I was able to relate to him just fine. of course I can never relate to him completely because I didn't exactly have the black experience. But in so many ways I could relate to him.
For me skin color never mattered and even when it came down to skin color, well you can't even represent my people with skin color because we literally come in our skin hues. I mixed. I'm half Mexican and half Puerto rican. But regardless with both Latinos they come in all skin hues.
And if anybody has seen in canto then you will already know that there are plenty of families out there that look just like that. Everybody's related via biology or marriage and it's all mixed color. My family is literally exactly like that. I literally saw exactly my family in the encanto family because we're not one color. Not even those we are biologically related to.
My aunt, uncle's, and mother come from a caramel Mexican and a black Puerto Rican woman. Who created one caramel daughter, one white daughter, and one dark-skinned son. A son who went on to create one light skin baby and two caramel babies. My auntie ended up with a caramel Mexican similar to her father and made a white baby with an afro. And right after that a black baby with straight curly hair. My mother who is already half Mexican and half Puerto Rican like my aunt and uncle got with another half Mexican and half Puerto Rican and literally had six children of each individual freaking skin shade.
Sure so many of us typically come in the caramel color. But you literally cannot represent us Latino with one God damn skin color. It's impossible. And I find it funny you mentioned so much of the colorism but yet when it comes to these characters your focusing so much on the color of their skin. Representing the culture and the actual experience I could understand. But for some of them nothing about them was special that you mentioned other than your skin color. Their personalities probably could have been added to somebody who was white, Latino or even Asian. Cuz beyond what our culture, traditions, and Nations more to us into we are still individuals from our same skin color and cultural brothers and sisters.
I can relate to anybody of any ethnic background or skin color. I could also not relate to them of any background or skin color just based on personality and loan. Sure are there some things I can relate to somebody more than anything because of cultural reasons or skin color reasons? Yes, I won't deny that. But because there's so much more to people than what's on the surface level, I get so annoying when that's all people focus on.
I probably only seen a significant few characters in my life time where they were one of my people. You know what's funny, I could never tell because they were so God damn caramel that I never thought twice. There are so many ethnicities that come in caramel. From latinos, to asians, to africans, to Middle easterners. Every single individual race has that ethnicity that comes in caramel. And many of those cultural regions will even have their people come in lighter and darker skin complexions as well.
So without speaking our language, representing our culture, showing our food, literally showing anything that shows which type of racer ethnicity that character is, I'm not going to know what the hell they are.
I s*** you not there used to be so many shows that I used to watch that have Latino characters that I didn't even know where Latino until they finally had that one episode they spoke spanish. And I look at them like what the hell? Why are they speak in spanish? Are they one of mine?
It's hard to tell who's one of mine just by looking at them cuz one of mine looks like everybody else is. Literally, my people look like so many other ethnicities just for the main fact that we are mixed with so many other ethnicities. Look at the history of Mexico and Puerto rico. we exist because we're a mixed breed of so many ethnicities. If somebody wants to say they were pure Mexican and Puerto rican, you have my permission to look at them like an idiot because no such thing exists. We literally exist because we're a mixed breed of people. And I ain't got damn proud of it because we wouldn't be here if it wasn't for that.
Hell, if you look back at most of human history there really is no such thing as ethnicity whatsoever. Well, that tangent aside, I guess what I'm trying to get at is I really just look at everybody that's normal people because without the cultural differences, to me there's nothing special about your skin color. You literally could be any race or ethnicity. Okay so you're black. That means you can literally be anything to me. You could be any of the African ethnicities. Maybe I don't see your face. Maybe you're a decoration person. Maybe you're a black middle eastern. Maybe you're a Latino who's a darker skin.
And I'm not joking when I say we sometimes look like everybody else. I literally cannot tell you how many times I'll confuse another Puerto Rican for literally everything else other than Puerto rican. Even I have been confused for other ethnicities and I don't get offended about it because I literally do it to my own people. And that's because we literally look like everybody else.
I'm a half Mexican half Puerto Rican male that constantly gets confused for being Middle Eastern! 😂 And I love it when it happens cuz it always starts an interesting conversation. Especially when I tell them what I actually am. And that's the primary thing I usually get confused for. I've even been confused for being Eastern european. Specifically you go slavic. I think somebody has one said Bosnian. Are you even know what Bosnian people look like but apparently I look Bosnian. 🤷😂.......

    • @HK47_115
      @HK47_115 Рік тому +1

      2. Literally without culture and language and even flags and borders I cannot tell the difference between people because to me people are people. No matter their color. Even in the other nations, the other ethnicities are typically mixed color most of them out there. Especially the ones closer to the equator.
No that's not to say that other nations probably don't still have their issues with ethnic division or even colorism. Central and South American nations do it, Middle Eastern Nations do it, the age Nations do it, pretty much apparently every side of the world has had their issue with colorism once upon a Time or still do.
Whether they're doing it to another group of people or doing it to their OWN! And for me, I think that's the part that irritates me the most. It's one thing when you divide yourself from the people you literally can I identify who have a different culture, religion, instead of beliefs. That makes sense whether you hate them or not. But how are you going to look at your own people and say you're not one of mine or I am Superior because this book from The invisible Man in the sky and his speaker in his house said so because of my lighter complexion. Or Puerto Ricans who hate black people and act like they don't have African in their blood. Again, we literally wouldn't freaking exist if it wasn't for the fact that we are mixed up other groups of people. The primary ones that we are mixed up of are the original native ancestors, the Spanish, and the African slaves brought over. We both have some of the goddamn same ancestors that came from one the danm same continent.
I may be 100% latino, believe it or not the people brought over on those boats are as much my ancestors as they are yours my guy. And any other black person reading this. As far as I'm concerned, you're all my very very very very very very very very very distant cousins. So what's up primo? How you been? Why are you so obsessed with skin color? Is it really just only the horrible crap that happened in history? I have no doubt that's a contributor to it. But there are kind of people out there that been through some messed up crap and don't always identify to the People by skin color alone.
Especially when again even you guys come in various different shades. Who cares which color or shade of color you come in. Our people should be our people. And if we really want our stories to be told that damn bad in media then it's best we do it ourselves because nobody's going to tell their stories better than us.
Besides those who are just genuinely interested in our history and our culture outside of it, nobody's going to be as invested in what our ancestors struggle through to get us to where we are today than us.
To be fair though, it does seem like the black community does have a lot of catching up to do. Because when it comes to Latino community, we already been making our own s*** for quite a while. I've just never really been to interested because of two reasons. The first reason being I'm a Latino who can't speak Spanish for s*** and of course most of my people are going to make it in the primary language they speak. So I'm literally just s*** out of luck of watching the content my old people make with us for us. 🥲
The other reason being because I just didn't realize how disconnected from my own people and culture i was. Because lately I have been more interested to see what my own people have to offer. At least when I'm able to get it with some subtitles. But primarily I'm trying to look into anything that has to do with my people's culture on both sides. I know very minimal about my Mexican side and almost practically nothing other than what happened during the colonization of my Puerto Rican side. Well that and the fact that that apparently some rogue army soldiers try to commit a genocide against my people in the 1960s and thankfully it flopped so hard that apparently barely any Puerto Ricans knew about it. Even though it was a serious massacre. People did die. People try to exterminate my people. And a lot of people never knew about this at the time or even now. I remember asking my grandparents about this and they said what the hell was I talking about? Nobody in my family knew we ever had a genocide attempted on us in the 1960s
Which is why I feel like the real representation be at the forefront should be history more than anything. What's your favorite cartoon character looks like should be at the bottom. Experiencing your culture in the real world should be a real priority. Not experiencing it through fiction
Also, I'm not trying to have the impression Olympics with you with mentioning the attempted genocide against Puerto ricans. I'm just using it as an example of something important to our history that's how many of us didn't know about even when it happened. And that blows my freaking mind. And I do know about many of the messed up stuff that they still did around that time to like black wall street. but for some reason why people always saw native Americans or anything like needed for Americans including Latinos somehow still a little bit lesser than black people. Cuz for you guys you were still at least good as property. Not that everybody makes it any better, but somehow we or less than dirt. Weren't even worth property. And I don't think that makes it any better or worse. It's just f***** up all around in general.
For future generations we should all come together to tell them about the truth of our connected history. Cuz in many ways it's connected more than you think. Make sure that's the first thing they hear about. The truth about our people and our history and their struggles they went through. And then when we're worried about them seeing themselves on tv, that's when we come in and we give it to them ourselves. Cuz nobody's going to tell our stories better than us. Nobody knows the truth better than us.

Man I don't why everyone keeps trashing Trixie. I loved her character. She was the most normal one to me as a kid on that show. Gave me great life advice. I feel like if they didn't make her talk and act like the way she did, she would have been forgotten in a show with humans turning into dragons. You kinda need to have a gimmick to stand out in a show, especially for young kids.

Representation to me is showcasing the actual true colors of this world and life we live in. That the world isn't just only about White people being seen as the main default for humanity or media. That black little kids don't have to always see themselves in slavery movies or as racist overdone stereotypes & tokens props, showing that diversity is real life, or that having more black characters as protagonists also just being regular people shouldn't make "certain people" freak out or scared that minorities are trying to take away from the already overly-populated white characters there are in entertainment media already.

Growing up a saw a plethora of black characters in animation.
Kwami from Captain Planet, Static Shock, WarMachine in the 90s Iron Man cartoon, Green Lantern John Stewart, The Proud Family, The Boondocks, Da Boom Crew, WayneHead, and Spawn(even though I didn't see that until a few years ago) to name a few.
My point is black representation in animation was a constant for me growing up, even though I didn't need nor ask for it. So how on Earth, wait... You didn't have cable or satellite did you?

Chillixion's points on Kaldur were spot-on. Both the writers and the VA did a great job with his character. Without hindsight, if you told me the show was going to have a black and gay character who was also the "amazing team leader", I would've expect some kind of woke garbage. Instead they took the character seriously and even gave him a pretty awesome mid-series arc.
Also, despite being a white kid, John Stewart was the only Green Lantern I actually liked. The serious personality made more sense than the "hot-shot maverick" attitude of the others.

Before you read this comment I must note I do not have a problem with black characters in media, I think having dark skin characters is fine, the point of my comment is to understand a view point other then my own. Also I'm 7:54 into the video.
Throughout most of my life I watched anime exclusively, if you're unfimiliar with anime, it's extremely rare for an anime character to not be asian, as such it's very rare to find a white person in anime and even if you find one they're portrayed as rather extreme stereotypes.
I as a white person never felt the need to demand better white representation in anime because I often found that the asian characters were perfectly relatable.
So while I don't have any problem with having black characters in media I am confused as to why you need a character to be the same race as you for you to feel like you can relate to them.
