FYI, I've had a Marauder since they were first released. Think of the triple bucker as a mini hum bucker with a single coil slapped onto it...the switching is the same as an SSH Strat. Front position is the Jazzmaster alone, next is the Jazzmaster and the front single coil of the triple bucker, middle is the front single coil of the triple bucker alone, next is all three coils of the triple bucker, and the last position is the back two coils of the triple bucker, wired as a mini hum bucker. The overall effect is something like a really heavily modded strat with a jazz master in the neck, a tele neck pickup in the middle and a mini hum bucker in the bridge.
That's it, Gary, good description. I have the Lake Placid Blue. I was financially constrained at the time and didn't really need it when they first came out (although I thought they were the first original thing that Fender did in decades and quite versatile), but later when they were discontinuing them, I got a great blowout clearance deal for one brand new for $289 from Full Compass. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I think they are pretty unique and versatile, so I kept mine in the collection/arsenal. Typically, Fender did not market them well, and it was another worthy model that came and went as people did not understand them, but the Marauder should still be in their offerings IMHO.
1st position: Neck / 2nd: Neck and inside bridge coil / 3rd: Inside bridge coil alone / 5th: Bottom two bridge coils as a humbucker / 4th: Combo of 3 and 5 positions, im assuming thats a humbucker and single coil at the same time.
From what I understand, the triple bucker is basically like a single coil and a humbucker just all in the same body cavity. The 3rd coil which is closest to the neck of the 3 can basically be used as a stand alone single coil. So the wiring is basically like an H-S-S configuration, it just looks odd, and the tones are certainly not your typical H-S-S stuff. Very cool, and very different.
I got one of each, a black Marauder and dark brown wood Jaguar. I love them both, but usually end up with the Marauder, because of the feel and the triplebucker is really nice. I play it instead of a Les Paul, an SG and an American Deluxe Strat, lots of times. It is both cheap and well-made.
I got a Marauder LPB some months ago and The rest of my arsenal's been collecting dust ever since (high end axes all of them). This is one different beast that's for sure, you've gotta be patient and explore all The vast posibilites behind this rather unorthodox design. A real keeper here...
I still have my LPB Marauder too. Very versatile and unique guitar, that can cut just about any gig. Too bad Fender did not market them well, so they would stay around. About the most new design they had done in decades, but they are not very good marketing and explaining things to folks to help cool new models catch on.
Simple way to figure out roughly what the wiring is with the triplebucker - just get a screwdriver and tap each blade (and the other pickup, for completeness) while it's plugged into the amp. The volume of the knocking sound from the amp should tell you which coils are active :)
Really enjoy your videos here in Los Angeles. If I can weigh in on the pick up selection switching, I believe the switching is the same as an HSS configuration. Position 1 (P1) is the 2 single coils at the end. P2 is all 3 single coils (triple bucker). P3 is the just the 3rd single coil closer to the jazz pick up. P4 is the 3rd coil and the jazz pick up. P5 is the jazz pick ip alone. Hope this helps.
An easy way to check which coils are active is to lightly tap the pole pieces (or the rails) with a screwdriver or other metal-tipped object. The coils that are active will pass the tapping through to the amp.
Flicking through the guitar's five-way switch you get the Triplebucker in its humbucking mode; all three coils on; the inside coil of the Triplebucker on its own; that inside coil combined with the P-90-style neck pickup; and the neck pickup solo.
Paul Wohlstetter You are correct...just as I originally described above. It's like an HSS Strat with a mini humbucker, a small single coil in the middle (like a tele neck pickup, for instance) and a Jazzmaster (not a P-90) in the neck.
In the future, if you don't know what the selector switch does, tap the pickups with a screw driver individually and it will be fairly obvious what the switch does.
first position on the switch is the p-90, second position is the p-90 with only one coil of the triplebucker, third position is just one coil from the bucker, the fourth is the p-90 and the triple bucker, and the fifth position is all three coils in the triplebucker. just bought the marauder it is an awesome and extremely versatile guitar perfect for gigging.
Seriously jerry jah? You have truly helped improve this video and I feel I have gain insight. Thanks buddy! PS... I love you guys. I like the goofy Andertons videos.
I really like the Marauder, very impressive! The Jag is a bit too far removed from the real ones, more like a pseudo non reverse Firebird. Nothing wrong with that mind you, I LOVE NR 'Birds, but calling it a Jaguar just seems wrong.
I recently picked up a modern player jag and I love it. Granted, I would pick up my Mexican strat over this any day, and the mum was cheaper (Craigslist ftw) but for blues the jag has a great tone and I absolutely love the look. The jag is what I show my friends first. I would recommend it a lot.
For the Marauder Pos. 1 - neck pickup Pos. 2 - neck pickup with the first inside coil of the triplebucker Pos. 3 - just the inside coil of the triplebucker Pos. 4 - all three coils of the triplebucker (kinda boosts the high end) Pos. 5 - back two coils of the triplebucker
@RobChappers Just wanted to let you know that you and Lee(and Musik Schmidt :)) are making the best gear reviews on the net. I love them and I think that your style of reviewing stuff is plain awesome. I mean the videos are funny, informative and the audio quality is stunning. Keep it up \m/ Greetings from Germany.
the bridge postion is first two coils like a humbucker, the second postion is all the 3 coils trembucker ,the third positon is 3 coil on trembucker and jazz master soapbar and last position is just the jazz master .these are the correct postions cheers...
If you want to know what the 5 way switch is doing to that triple coil/ jazzmaster pup, simply use a small screwdriver and tap the coils... you will hear if the coil is hot or not by tapping..
The Marauder is very interesting, but I like the Jaguar in transparent black. No silly switches in the way, no weird-looking pickguard, and a stable bridge instead of a trem/bridge that goes out of tune easily. Looks great, too. Love p90s.
I could go a 7 string strat as long as it had a 2 point trem and hsh set up, and can be all black or rosewood fretboard with red body and black headstock with a square edge body profile, none of that rounded stuff.
The Gibson 'Marauder' was a Les Paul=esq bodied guitar with a *screw* fastened neck which had a 'Flying-V' style 'arrow'-shaped headstock. They were designed - like so many alternate line Gibson guitars of the time (RD and sighlty later Victory series) to compete with Fender guitars, offering single-coil voicings (Tele). They were cheaper than the more mainstream stable of guitars from Gibson... Now rare and worth quite a bit, if you can find one in good nick.
@@Deebz270 Thanks for the detailed information! IIRC, Ron Wood (still known for playing with Rod Stewart then) did a magazine ad for it. Tried to give the impression that he'd used it for the solo on Maggie May, but that song was out before the guitar was. Lol. Still, I wanted one. I was about 15 at the time.
TheJamesd74 Thanks for the advice. The problem with cost is that in my country, Argentina, guitars are twice the price as in the US. And if I buy from ebay I´m not sure it will get past customs nowadays, because of new commercial restrictions, so I will bring one when I travel. I really like the Gibson SG, it´s one of my favorite guitars.
@TheRedSandwitch My mate Paul "Stick" Annis is doing some independent bass guitar reviews in collaboration with Andertons, so go check those out... otherwise maybe my bassist Dave Hollingworth might do some guess ;-)
not only would they not fit without routing in either guitar, but it would be better to just get a guitar with them already. if you cant try the blacktop HH jag. they'll fit in there.
im in an indie-rock band, looking for a new guitar (my ibanez isnt exactly the best for our image..) and ive been looking at the modern player series. I like the look of them all. What would you recommend? strat, tele, jag or marauder?
Hey Rob!. I have a question. Is the tuner You've using (I mean this one mounted on the headstock) is accurate enough to set intonation? And from what company it is?
Position 1 - Humbucker (the 2 outside coils of the triple-bucker), Position 2 - Triple-Bucker (all the 3 coils of the triple-bucker), Position 3 - Single-Coil (the inside coil of the triple-bucker), Position 4 - Single-Coil/Jazzmaster Pickup (the inside coil of the triple-bucker and the neck pickup), Position 5 - Jazzmaster Pickup (the neck pickup)
Rob my ML 1's tremolo recently got loose and flops around like a floyd? What can I do to bring it back to staying in place like it did stock? Thanks SO MUCH!!!!!
Marauder is my most recent guitar and besides my very first guitar which is a Mexican 90s strat the marauder is my favorite you feel like a legend when you play it! I bought it just because it was the last fender in my local guitar shop and it completely beats my epiphany les Paul standard plus and I got it for less than half of the price of the les Paul. Great great great bargain and all around guitar
Motherbuckers have already been made by Kent Armstrong: they're basically two Hot Rails, so Quad Coils!!! :O I'm pretty sure they were in Matt Bellamy's signature guitar, or his own guitar for a bit, or something.
Just a thought but would the 3rd, 4th and 5th switch settings mean - 3rd = 1st coil "on", 4th = 1st & 2nd coils "on", 5th = all three coils "on" perhaps? Just a thought anyway ...

Some one make a quad humbucker with four and call it the humfucker
That made me laugh way harder than i should xD
I now want to wire 2 blade pickups together and call it that
1st position: Neck / 2nd: Neck and inside bridge coil / 3rd: Inside bridge coil alone / 5th: Bottom two bridge coils as a humbucker / 4th: Combo of 3 and 5 positions, im assuming thats a humbucker and single coil at the same time.

I want the Jaguar! It looks and sounds beast!
I think you'll find the scale length on the Marauder is 25.5".It's the Jag that's 24".
God I love caps playing! I was on another website while listening to this and I could always tell when it was him playing!

John Dough This is so accurate it hurts
Or a set of keys will work too.
You guys make the best guitar rundown videos. I don't buy any instrument until you guys review it. Love the honesty
could always tap the pole pieces with something metal to figure out which coils are on
@slavoy11 It is the amazing Planet Waves Chromatic Headstock Tuner, and yes it is very accurate ;-)
first position on the switch is the p-90, second position is the p-90 with only one coil of the triplebucker, third position is just one coil from the bucker, the fourth is the p-90 and the triple bucker, and the fifth position is all three coils in the triplebucker. just bought the marauder it is an awesome and extremely versatile guitar perfect for gigging.
well hello from the future! I was trying to find a review of this guitar somewhere, and guess what, you guys are reviewing the guitar! Awesome
I would love to see something like the marauder with a reverse body like the gibson firebirds
Seriously jerry jah? You have truly helped improve this video and I feel I have gain insight. Thanks buddy! PS... I love you guys. I like the goofy Andertons videos.
@alexandrospezikis He joined a band recently... apparently!

@w1wang Plumming tape! Wrap one tiny piece around the screw thread ;-)
For the Marauder
Pos. 1 - neck pickup
Pos. 2 - neck pickup with the first inside coil of the triplebucker
Pos. 3 - just the inside coil of the triplebucker
Pos. 4 - all three coils of the triplebucker (kinda boosts the high end)

The maruader is a tone beast - lovely thick sound from this - love it.

Tap the coils with a metallic object whilst switching! Oldest 'trick' in the book surely?

I'm hoping that you'll demo the Tele Plus and the Thinline too. It's going to be tough deciding on which one to buy for Christmas!
The Marauder is very interesting, but I like the Jaguar in transparent black. No silly switches in
the way, no weird-looking pickguard, and a stable bridge instead of a trem/bridge that goes
out of tune easily. Looks great, too. Love p90s.
@RadioNothing Kent Armstrong is already making a 4-coil humbucker called Motherbucker. That's one more coil louder.
Will you guys be doing a review of that Thinline Tele in the modern player series as well?
@RobChappers how do you get those crunchy clean tone XD!
I could go a 7 string strat as long as it had a 2 point trem and hsh set up, and can be all black or rosewood fretboard with red body and black headstock with a square edge body profile, none of that rounded stuff.
Will you review the rest of the Modern Player series?
theres a pickup by kent armstrong called the motherbucker (4 singles) and mighty mite made a pickup called the motherbucker (3 singles)
Gibson released a Marauder in the mid 70s. I think it was an "economy" model, but it didn't seem to catch on.
The Gibson 'Marauder' was a Les Paul=esq bodied guitar with a *screw* fastened neck which had a 'Flying-V' style 'arrow'-shaped headstock.

I really like the Gibson SG, it´s one of my favorite guitars.
You can just google 'how the triplebucker works' to find out the switching. Great article that explains it by erm... Andertons! Bam
Depends on your technique. Personally, I like that volume position, it's in a pretty good place for me to easily access.
Was Chappers sarcastically licking the Jag's nut or does a bone nut actually have a distinct taste? :O
By the way, were you two both on the Mesa? The jam tone was fantastic!!!
@TheRedSandwitch My mate Paul "Stick" Annis is doing some independent bass guitar reviews in collaboration with Andertons, so go check those out... otherwise maybe my bassist Dave Hollingworth might do some guess ;-)
@MTAlupyourass Ooopps should have bleeped that out ha ha...
Fender's site says the Jaguar is a 24" scale, not a Strat-like scale.
Can you please show the fender jaguar blacktop b-90, no one else has a video of it
not only would they not fit without routing in either guitar, but it would be better to just get a guitar with them already. if you cant try the blacktop HH jag. they'll fit in there.

@darusgn Indonesia, i believe. at least that's where my three-year-old Squier was made. i doubt it's changed in that amount of time, though. so yeah my bet's on Indonesia.
Is it possible to replace the pickups in the Marauder with the DiMarzio Classic Rock Humbucker Set?
i feel like andertons needs a new shirt/polo thing. that shirt lee is wearing is played out! love the guitars btw makes me want one!
Dear Rob it is not regular Strat scale length but 24 inch!? I think you can recognize the difference when picking it up.
I know everyones going on about, but what did happen to the ML3? Did I miss an update?
@TheMetalHeaD256 thanks, so is it good build quality then? better than average chinese model?
What amp are you guys using in this video?
Love the sound of the jag, Im thinking that P90s are the best pickup ever for anything than out and out heavy matal.
i remember the days when you couldnt buy a hundo (yes i had one so they exist) "S" copy guitar for these prices... awesome :)
I had an old Hondo ES-335 copy that was quite amazing. Made in Japan I think. Had a USA The Heritage H535, so sold the Hondo for a good price or trade, can't remember, but that Hondo was real cool.
@digiscream Did this, over and over...
oh man, if only that marauder came in more colours! If it came in candy apple red I would be (trying) to solo on it right now

Wasn't there a Gibson Marauder as well? - pretty sure there was - odd both Fender and Gibson using the same name.
lol your chattier videos are always the better ones :)
with the triple bucker, you can tap each coil rail with a metal object to figure out which ones are on in each config.
Hey I would like to see you doing some semi-hollows like 335 or something like that :D
@RobChappers I just got a snark SN-5 and it rocks! Don't know about intonating though...probably not accurate enough for that
Isn't a Motherbucker a double humbucker? 4 coils?
@TheJamesd74 Yes, the musicians who come here always comment on that, a very enthusiastic public. The last time I was in River Plate was in 2010 to see Paul McCartney. A memorable concert, I went with my daughter, and in 94 my wife and I had seen him. These days Roger Waters finished 9 shows of The Wall there. I didn´t go, though. My Alvarez Dana II has a Triple Humbucker. Made in the 90s...pretty cool guitar. Came with a Single coil in the neck and a Floyd Rose Trem. Currently, I'm redoing the guitar in ocean turquoise and gold hardware. Should be pretty cool.
like it when chappers and cap'n jam together.
PS: position 4 (neck jazzmaster & middle coil) gives you the classic fender sound.
Captain playing "White Rose". Nice:-D.
I'd like to correct what chappers said about the scale length, the jaguar's scale length is 24" not 25.5 like a strat. Tiny!
So comparing a humbucker to a single coil, shouldnt the triplebucker be like ubersuperduper mad black cemetary metal high gain ? :P
@worlddomin623 No... MIC
how long does it take you to ship to Finland???
Yes, you may be right, but I like this Marauder.
I´d like to have an American but the price is too high for me.
Even some Mexican models are, too, as the Baja Telecaster for example.
The Blacktop MIM series is good, I have a Strat, but in a year their prices have been increased.
I HATE being the guys who asks this question but I must know can the marauder play metal well?
The Marauder or the Blacktop strat?
So the Marauder doesn't have a setting with all 4 pickups on? That sucks.
Man I love everything about that jaguar except the scale length :(
get a screwdriver and tap the poles on the motherbucker and youll know witch ones are active
Managed to get one in red for £177 on Thomann literally a week before they took it off the website, so happy! :D
hahaha, same here - red one, about 3 weeks ago - not even b-stocks left :)
TheLuxxn Can't have it till christmas though :( what do you think of it?
to be honest - i love it - i couldnt believe what good quality it is - it feels like an guitar for like 450~+, which is amazing for this price.
wanted to use it as side-guitar, its my main now.
TheLuxxn Awesome :) What genres do you play?
