    So glad you guys shined a spotlight on Aaron. What he has done for those of us KC tone fans is beyond belief nearly. The magic combo of the specific Utah speaker and Veleno guitar for In Utero was such an important discovery. People should check out his IR packs he went through a lot of his own money to create those for us and they’re priced more than fair.

This video was a brilliant reminder of why using what you have & knowing the gear well enough to get the best out of it. Just that wobble on Heart Shaped Box solo was mind blowing & that Crayon & Mimiq pedal is on the shopping list. Loved the ending of being inspired, not mimicking. I swear there's an extra A in there Josh added that it doesn't have, all the A notes aren't being bent enough and where's the mute on the A5 chords played in eighths for the chorus. I had similar notes for the other songs too. There's more sliding and bending in Kurdt's rhythm stuff than Josh is doing when he emulates it.

      Yeah as a die hard nirvana fan, the video isn’t really made for you I think. Great video! The chord progression of In Bloom baffles me to this day. It’s fascinating to analyze these songs I loved so much as a kid, but doing as an adult who knows and loves music theory and harmony. Kurt’s ability to write great, catchy melodies over the weirdest changes was maybe his biggest strength as a writer imo.

    • @ChrisEck13
      @ChrisEck13 Місяць тому +10

      It's almost like music theory is a hinderence to songs like In Bloom, it doesn't really make sense with traditional theory, I think every note is in that song, and I don't mean just a passing chromatic thing but part of the song.

    • @blairmichaelhogan4502
      @blairmichaelhogan4502 Місяць тому +4

    Great job on this video! I’ve been obsessed with the guitar sounds on each of 3 Nirvana’s studio albums. For the Nevermind album, Andy Wallace definitely added some chorus on many of Kurt’s guitar parts. From everything I’ve read and heard in his interviews, he did indeed use the Yamaha SPX-90. Specifically, he used the “Symphonic” preset on guitar parts, such as “Come As You Are”. You can’t get that chorus sound alone with just the Small Clone. If you listen to Butch Vig’s original “Devonshire” mixes of Nevermind, and even Nirvana’s live performances, the tone sounds way different than the album guitar tones because they are lacking that additional SPX-90 chorus.

    I like this kind of video and wouldn't mind seeing more of these.
    I like the approach of using modern gear to approximate a sound that is now considered an authentic or vintage grunge sound, rather than using the actual gear and techniques used at the time. I think it hits home the point you make that the original recordings were a product of the existing technology, the way in which they recorded, how loud they played, the tastes of the band and the producer as to what worked, and chance elements. All of those factors result in a sound that is distinctive to a period in time, which becomes harder and harder to reproduce as time passes and as the way in which we make music changes. Very cool.

    As an aging, mid-50s punk who was in bands at the same time as Nirvana*, I just want to say that it's both weird and kind of wonderful to see you put so much thought into stuff that we at the time didn't give one tiny fuck about. We would just plug our crappy used guitars into whatever pedals and amps were available to us and play. Given how random and careless we were it's understandable that dissecting that stuff would be maddening for you. Kudos on a damn fine effort and a very fun video. *not nearly as good and successful (obviously) as they were

      @garydiamondguitarist Місяць тому +22

      I still think that approach is a lot more healthy. Working on getting the songs down and the band tight / playing together as one is way more important than "perfect" tone. The only people who care deeply about the guitarist's tone in a band are other guitarists, whom usually make up a tiny percentage of the overall fanbase. Most people are in it for the power of the music, if any.

    Theres a pedal called Pitch Box by Moore. I find that the "Detune" mode at "-1" does two things that I feel like get me closer to the Nevermind wall of distortion: 1) adds a doubling effect, and 2) causes a lot of unusual interference and harmonics SIMILAR to a flanger just without the LFO / oscillating wah effect. I consider this effect similar to playing a 12 string, pretty far away from an oscillating chorus effect.

    Our A&R consultant and label advisor is non other than Bruce Pavitt, the legendary founder of Sub Pop who discovered and signed Nirvana. And I must say this video was very informative about Kurt’s tones. I’m forwarding it to the guitarist/singer of one of our bands called Prince Of Lilies as they did their last two albums with Albini and they are about to record their 3rd album and this might help inform them on guitar tone. Thanks. Good job guys

    Matching tones on studio albums and trying to be 100% exact can be very difficult because of all the factors oyu mentioned off the top. And most of the time doesn't matter.
    Instead, I usually try to get in the ballpark and figure out what tone that artist was happy with using live. Or what would I be happy with using live to play the song. What sounds good and evokes the feeling of the song, rather than what matches exactly on an A/B test.
    Then after doing that.. Probably lower the gain and cut the bass a bit.
    A lot of times that satisfying guitar tone in your bedroom doesn't work on stage, because you have a bass player who fills out the low end way better than you (if you give them the space by cutting your low end), and when the volume is turned up, you find you don't need as much gain.

    @jhspedals Guys for the solo of Heart-shape Box check out the original Albini MIX, it show the original tone of the solo with full "tremolo" sound, they reduce it in the REMIX of this song.
    ua-cam.com/video/bGocxUFAID8/v-deo.htmlsi=Fif8HaAhs4psiBKY&t=410 I just use a very strong tremolo with fuzz or big muff whatever maybe a fuzz with bias control for gating dying out effect at the end in the sustaining note ..
