    Motion compensation is there for people using sim rigs that move around. Without it, the view would be moving when the motion rig moves.

      Doesn't that happen in real life? Or you mean like 180 lateral turns?

    • @neurokinetik64ES

      @@Timre23.1 Any turns in any direction. The motion sim is supposed to fake the g-forces by moving around, but the headset should keep your perspective fixed. For example, you don't want the interior of a car looking like it is rotating around you, you should be fixed in the driver's seat unless you are turning your head and looking around. That's what the motion compensation is for.

    This is a fine review, thank you sir. I am curious, if the game or sim you are using needs keyboard input is there a way to get some sort of pass through view to your real world keyboard? I am not much of a touch typist. And somehow I think having something strapped to your face would make it hard to use a keyboard, or flight sim controller real hardware switches? And what is it like to do normal day to day PC tasks with this on? Is there development in progress for a "VR PC desktop replacement"?

    4:40 "Put it down until the end here", as long as you loosen the top strap it can go much farther down than that, where he set it to is just where it starts meeting resistance to engage the clutching mechanism. For me it is much more comfortable farther down than he showed.
    The backer box also includes a thicker foam that could eliminate that light leak. I'm not sure about retail.
    9:19 while in upscaling the signal switches to same res as normal 8K signal, it is still higher quality because the 8K X has full RGB stripe on the final output where 8K has a sort of pentile pattern.
    11:10 I think motion compensation is for stuff like yawvr, canceling out movement from motion platforms so their simulation of acceleration doesn't show up in game as movement. It isn't for improving tracking of he headset by itself (attached steamvr tracker goes on the yawvr chair, etc.)

The cable is way to short, I've pop the cables out of my PC twice already, pain in the ass. I did get to use extender cables that I used for the 8K plus, 6ft and they work great without issues. It did take a little tweaking in the piTool and making sure you adjust the steamVR resolution for sure as if you don't then some games do lag and if the res isn't set for the game properly, like right now I have Half Life Alyx playing perfect with no jittery, So bright and sharp. Glad to hear it works without the Lighthouse, I want it specifically for Sim Racing so I won't be needing those 2 boxes, nor the controllers.
    Was just curious, did you test it with a separate headset above it? I have a Steelseries Arctis 7 and I am curious on the fit over the HMD. I have an audio mixer so I won't be using the built-in ones, just wondering how well it would fit around it.

    11:10 motion compensation is good for a sim racing (or flight sim) rigs that has motion ... so that when you are (flying) or driving your car and your rig is throwing you all over the place ... it will compensate for that movement so you dont end up clipping through the roof, floor, or the door ect... or just in general excessive movement can cause all sorts of clipping... sometimes motion hardware will also have this setting built into their software to counter the effects.

    • @bystander85
      @bystander85 3 роки тому

      1440p upscaled to 4K would theoretically look the same as 1440p with the most basic upscaling algorithm (just multiply the pixels) just with a different screendoor effect characteristic. Typically the higher res screens have much lower screendoor effect so you could theoretically get a nicer image. If they use an advanced upscaling algorithm, like Nvidia's DLSS where it predicts where extra pixels would be, then it could have an increase in detail resolution at the expense of introducing visual artifacts where the prediction is inaccurate. The algorithm would basically have to predict curves of more points from fewer points, and would have to add in details in textures from a less detailed texture. Considering there are infinite ways to connect two points, you can imagine the guess can be inaccurate.
      FPS matters on what kind of games you play. The faster paced the game where response time is important, the better higher FPS will be (e.g. table tennis). I know Oculus made a big deal about 90fps being a minimum based on their research but have since released headsets with 72~80fps since CV1 so... Obviously there are compromises. I've used Oculus Quest at 72fps and for me it's passable.

    The last time I looked in on the 8K X specs, the one disappointment was the lower FPS in full 4K (8K) native mode--75 FPS as I recall. I had the idea at the time that this constraint was actually due to the general inability of affordable graphics cards inability to crank out the pixels...but now that the Nvidia 3000 series are here, I would guess that's no longer a problem--if you can afford an 8K X, the cost of most 3000's isn't that prohibitive.
    Which begs the question: CAN the 8K X now be run at 90 or even 120Hz in full native mode, or are we still restricted to 75 FPS due to slow arrival of the drivers, or to some hardware limitation on the headset I'm not aware of?
    THX for any replies or links to more answers about this.

    • @DJHeroMasta
      @DJHeroMasta 3 роки тому +2

      The 75Hz refresh rate is due to various hardware level limitations. You gotta think about the amount of data being transferred over the from the GPU through the cable into the the HMDs chipset. First off the Pimax 8K-X is equipped with a DisplayPort 1.3 cable as is both the Gen 1 HP Reverb and the Reverb G2 (Higher res screens). The Oculus Rift S and Valve Index use DisplayPort 1.2 (Lower res screens). DisplayPort 1.2 has a max supported bandwidth of 21.6Gbps and a max data rate of 17.28Gbps. DP 1.3/1.4 has a max supported bandwidth of 32.40Gbps with a max data rate of 25.92Gbps. DP 2.0 will have a max bandwidth of 80Gbps and a max data rate of 77.37Gbps.
      The more data that can be transferred allows for an increase in support at higher resolutions, for higher refresh rates. For example, with DP 2.0, we'll be able to run two native 4K displays up to 120hz, 10bpc, with HDR enabled. This can be broken down even further to the finer details but I'd rather not get into that right now. You can look that up yourself if you're truly interested. Otherwise, I'd be writing a little book lol.
      Edit: Almost forgot, that means that all devices would have to support DP 2.0. So that mean the GPU would have to support DP 2.0 (Which *none* of the current models do. Both AMD and Nvidia's latest and greatest "available" cards are spec'd with DP 1.4 ports with DSC (Display Stream Compression....Again, not going to go into full detail but DCS is a method of compressing data to allow even higher resolutions such as 8K to run at 60Hz and 4K to run at 120Hz with HDR enabled) the HMD would have to have to be equipped with a DP 2.0 Cable or a Type C cable running in "Alt Mode" (which can provide power/charging via the cable as well on top of video & audio data transfer like the Oculus Quest 1&2). And finally, the chipset on the HMD's mainboard must also support DP 2.0 in order for this to all work. But of course the manufacturers wouldn't supply a DP 2.0 cable when the actual headset itself couldn't receive that input.
      Here are some links for ya as well:

Even if I had a quad SLI 3080ti rig (I know Nvidia doesn't do quad SLI anymore, but you get the idea)...the limitation would be the pixel-passing power of the 1.3 Display Port itself. If the next version of the 8K X (call it the 8K X2) moves to DP 2.0, it's still not clear to me a triple-sizing of the pixel-pushing pipe would be enough to allow an increase in the framerate.
      It seems to me if the HMD itself can run its screens @120Hz in one of its modes, it is probably capable of running both screens @120Hz even in full-native mode, provided all the pixels are there for each refresh, so I've assumed the HMD itself has no hardware limitations in and of itself...of course I could be wrong, too, as maybe they just haven't bothered yet to make that possible, since all the required pixels just can't get there...yet. Which leaves me wondering if the move to DP 2.0 and TWO DP on the HMD would be enough to get it done. Hmmmm.
      Of course that would probably require TWO video cards also...whether SLI or not. Hmmmmmm.
      I probably couldn't afford all that right now anyway, but it's interesting to speculate.
      In any case, thanks for your very informative reply. Much appreciated.

I shouldn't have bought the Reverb G2 as you already advice at the past vid. I thought, wrongly, that I could manage the crappy tracking with the "Mixed VR" settings. It was wrong, as the mixed setting was nightmare also. The steamvr always forgot the room setting no matter how I play all the stuffs. The calibration was so difficult, and it eventually got drift very quickly. No, I can't explain my frustration, despair, and angry. Just please, don't buy the Reverb G2.
