he's so brutally honest standing right there with them ahaha. that's definitely something to admire about linus's ethics in reviewing products.
Being honest and fair makes better products. If linus wasnt honest the last time, maybe they even didnt improved the headset since last time.
@@Utrlbruser i think you are being too harsh. linus's job is to provide a knowledgeable and honest examination of a product compared to other options on the market. he did just that.
I think he was fair. he didn't like the product, and expressed his reasons. he didn't expect improvement but checked it out again anyway and was honest that the company had made major bounds in improving the product.
Good on Pimax for welcoming an honest preview and then improving upon the bad points. This has come back onto my radar
Late comment but the 5K+ is really quite good, maybe not $800 good but I picked one up for half that and for the price it's sweet.
@@noth606 Update? I am thinking about picking one up since the fov on the oculus rift s is to low for me to enjoy. You have two base stations and have to use vive controllers right?
Sabo right now I have one base station only, which I don't recommend but it works. But what I would say is get the knuckles controllers, so the steam index ones. They don't work perfectly in everything yet but they are a huge step up in immersion. I have the knuckles EV2 devkit ones but aside from some minor detail they are identical to the official Index ones. Unfortunately I don't really have the space to use the setup without continually banging my hands into overhead roof beams so I will probably sell soon, but if space is not an issue that's the setup to get. 5K+ and Index controllers, the base stations will depend on space etc but get at least two.
The new vision series pimax headsets look like pure ecstacy. They have a better housing so they don't break. The new screens have less distortion, and are less canted leading to less eye strain. They have a comfort kit that alongside their new modular audio strap, make the headset look super comfortable, and balanced. Only problem I have is the prices.
Much better assessment considering the first Pimax he tested was an early prototype. This one is on the cusp of a retail release. Thanks for the honest impressions.
@Chris E. It's 4k per eye which is light years higher than anything else. I received mine and I had reservations but it turned out great. It smokes my Vive Pro in every tangible way.
It does seem like a lot has changed. Especially if those eye trackers are giving us foveated rendering, which would make the device a true gen2 IMHO.
I tested the Oculus DK1 (the first public kick starter test kit) and it worked really well. I could play for 45+ minutes at time without getting sick. A prototype should at least work. His feedback might have helped them make the new one better anyways.

Thanks for the video Linus. Was nice to meet you at the Pimax booth. I can confirm most of the things you said in the video. Pimax improved the headsets a lot over the time and for me it's a very good VR headset. Most impressive thing for me is the big field of view. Also they have an OLED version now called Pimax 5K BE. Very awesome colors and black values but more SDE than 5K+.
@@wil-fri @Nikos A. The shoes don't have a lot of bandwidth requirement, but latency might be a problem with Bluetooth. So they probably use the same 2.4GHz technology as the dongles for low-latency gaming mice. Think Logitech Lightspeed.

I felt so awkward when the camera panned left to see the Cybershoes guy stood right next to Linus...
I kind of felt the same, but fact is they're going to see the video anyway, so it not like there's really a difference in the end.
It wasn't the comments about the product itself, of course the guy was expcting Linus to give his 100% honest feedback about how it is working etc.
It was the comments about the lack of customers to buy the product that made me feel bad for the guy... Pretty much "You can make all the improvements you want but you're still going bankrupt, guy. Sorry, eh." I guess I'm just a bit too soft for the cut-throat tech business haha.

@@Achtland44 I don't think so ;) But you just not having really tried it or you saying so because you don't wanna spend money on a VR headset doesn't make it bad ;)
I just use it for porn. I want the higher resolution 80hz.
@Sursurk I know. I don't care about FoV either. Kickstarted for the upscaled 8k. No screen door effect.
You won't need the higher resolution if you stop looking at your own wang
I'd say that a higher FoV than the current first gen is necessary/important, but it doesn't need to go to the extent of Pimax. I think 140-150 is the sort of range that we could sit at for quite a while comfortably.
Three years later and I'm still grateful to Linus and others who posted grandstanding titles that bashed Pimax - because I think they helped drive down resale prices, making it possible for me to afford a used 5k+. Which has been stunning from the day I plugged it in. What he misses - from only a half hour experience - is that getting used to that extra wide field of view over time makes VR so much more real and immersive. More so than better resolution (except that it also gives you resolution). And the Pimax software gives you a lot of control in tweaking your unit to get resolution that suits the capabilities of your graphics card and computer, so it's grown with me as I've upgraded my GPU over time.
Fast forward three years and I now have a Pimax 8kx with which I'm extremely satisfied. While the 5k+ worked great out-of-the-box, I had to make adjustments to the software settings to get the 8kx where I wanted - but once you're there, wow.
It's like going to McDonalds and ordering a Coke (or any other headset, from Index to Quest) vs going to a quality restaurant and ordering a wine that you've learned about, tasted and come to know. Researching, finding (and in the case of a headset, setting up) that wine takes time, it takes more out of your life - maybe an email to tech support or a couple hops onto the Pimax discord. But I'll take that experience over a simple McD's fountain Coke any day.

If you're talking about the one on the chair, I'm concerned about how twisted that cable is getting
Just wanted to say that i got myself an Oculus Rift 4 days ago and it's AMAZING. VR is seriously something you can't show someone unless they try it by themselves, super high-res or not it's extremely immersive.
It does blow you away when you first use it. Sadly, the Oculus Rift is not now the best VR headset but its still one of the better packages available with good quality hand controllers controllers and solid tracking. I'm still waiting for a decent next gen VR headset package. Pimax are slowly getting there but they still have long lead times and the base stations and hand controllers are not currently available. I have high hopes to see what Steam has been working on which is yet to be officially announced.
@@stewjw The Ouclus also uses a slightly lower resolution, which means that it's usable to more people since it requires a little bit lower specs PC wise. The tracking is really good, audio quality too, and the controllers fit perfectly in your hands.
@@Gigajizzo The low resolution, god rays and the screen door effect were issues for all the early 1st gen VR headsets such as the Oculus Rift. It's was particularly annoying for me since I liked to use it with flight simulators and reading text such as the avionics displays and seeing your enemy on the ground or in the air was a problem. Increasing the pixel density helped a little but it was still annoying. The restrcted 110° FOV was also a little annoying. The new VR headsets seem to be a long time coming but the graphic cards need to be faster to increase the frames rates. Low frame rates induces nausea from motion sickness. Foveated rendering is supposed to help where only the centre of vision is in high resolution. I know Oculus were also working on a crazy mechanical method to adjust the depth of focus but I believe they have decided to leave out this technology for their follow up to the Oculus Rift (Rift S?) if it ever sees the light of day. An issue for me with the Oculus controllers was I kept hitting the settings button, and it would often take several menu selections to get back into the game but that was a minor annoyance.
@@stewjw Right now since the images are being blown up a 1080p VR display is like a 480P display on your monitor, but a a 480p display on your focused on your fovea(center eye) is like a 1080p monitor since you can only see pixels in the middle of your field of view. For example, look at this word and see if you can read the text in your periphery.
Those shoes just seem like mice for the feet. Couldn't they use a laser to detect movement instead of a roller? Then they could integrate sidestepping too
Optical pickups would get filled with dust and hair from carpet really fast. They actually talked about it. And side-stepping isn't hardware limitation. You use sideways traction to turn around. It's direction of your feet that determine where you're heading, not your head. So you constantly make fairly fast sideways motions with your feet to re-orient your chair and your hips, while potentially staring and aiming in the same direction you did before. If you had ability to strafe, turning would become an issue. Making this one-direction is actually the right call for this sort of tech. And while you might think this is restrictive, having played Skyrim with Cybershoes, it feels very natural. There are definitely quirks you have to get used to, like making sure you lift your feet a bit higher when moving them forward, and touching carpet at just the right angle to make sure the wheel is in contact, as well as stopping it flat when you want to suddenly stop moving. But even after just a couple of minutes of play, you start doing all of that without even noticing it. So it really does end up feeling almost as natural as walking, meaning you don't have to even think about locomotion while playing. I was very happy with the experience.
@@konstantinkh won't the roller get filled with dust and debris anyway since it's basically a one axis ball like the ones for the old mice?
@@fedyx1544 I'm sure it will, over time. But just like the ball mice would still work just fine until they got really dirty inside, I suspect, this will too. Optical pickups tend to get really bad if there's just a single hair in the way, which is guaranteed to happen a lot on the carpet. So I think, mechanical pickup was the right call for the moment. Maybe they'll figure out how to build an optical pickup that works just as well in the future.
But in terms of single roller vs trackball, I don't think there are any limitations. They could have built a pickup that works in 2 directions. The problem with that is more about needing lateral traction to turn quickly. So they went with a roller that only lets the shoe slip against the floor in one direction.
As much as we're used to strafing in games, it really doesn't feel like something I've missed while playing, because I can still aim in one direction, and walk in another. All I have to do is turn my hips, along with the chair, in the direction I want to walk, and I can keep aiming and shooting in the same direction I was before. That's just as good as strafing in most situations, and feels perfectly natural.
7:29 Thanks for that = F%$& you Linus. 🤣

That dude who gave Linus the vr looks like James haliday from ready player one. I am suspicious
Haven't watched a Linus for over 2 years! He's still a nerd.
The guy that convinced Linus to check it out again definitely got a huge bonus.
Or fired for not putting the headset in Normal mode where Linus wouldn't have seen any distortion.
The second you try the 5k+ it becomes obvious that this is better than OG Vive or Rift. The distortion around the edges is there, but after a short while you accustom to it and stop noticing it. The SDE is almost non-existent, at least compared to OG Vive. The tracking is same as the vive. No latency perceived at all. Latency could be present if the "parallel projection mode" which is required for compatibility in some games is enabled. This is indicated by chevron on the headset blinking - like the one behind Linus in the video. Other than that, tracking was spot on. The sweetspot is HUGE compared to OG Vive, and the clarity is unparalleled. TBH after having the Pimax 5k+ LCD version for three days, I started noticing every flaw the original Vive has - the small FOV, the miniscule sweetspot, the godrays (which are almost non-present on P5k+), and worse resolution. The only thing the Vive has going for it are much better colours, for some reason the P5k+ image feels really washed out, like they turned the saturation slider all the way down to reduce the SDE / image retention. But you can see that ONLY if you're doing AB-testing. Otherwise, non-noticeable.
I love how if someone tries it and doesn't try normal view of 150 fov or adjust ipd for 5 minutes it's the gospel truth. Someone that owns it and has made the adjustments and gets a positive experience is a shill.
This reads like of those fake Amazon reviews by a paid reviewer, lol
I am having a blast reading all those shill comments 😂 You're free to believe what you want. I had time for a hands on experience, you didn't, but yeah, continue to spread your "wisdom", petty people 🤣
It looks like the visor on Dead Space suits!
instead of having the roller, why not use a trackball design so that way they would be able to map left and right movement too, without forcing you to turn your body.
Um, because do you slide your feet sideways when you turn? If not, that would be incredibly disorientating.
My thought at first then realized it's to move like in real life for immersion and not emulate a mouse. Our knees and feet design forces us to move our hips.
This is exactly why Linus & co is where I prefer to get my reviews. They are standing right beside a rep in their booth and being 100% honest. And the last product was essentially VR sandals which you think would make him squeal with delight.
I LOVE how honest Linus is about all his reviews haha

THE most unenthusiastic Beat Saber player I've ever seen xD.
I don't know if someone commented about this, but how about a ball on the bottom of the Cybershoes? Like a track ball, right?? Better side striding on FPS. It's not like your gonna take a stroll outside. lol
You use your feet to spin in the chair so u can rotate ingame. Side Imput would be kinda bad for this...
The roller used now is fine with a bit of tweaking, they just need an additional input. Probably something like a simple laser, like they use in the bottom of a mouse. Not for aiming or anything, simple so they can detect when the foot is off the floor and the roller is free moving vs take off and landing angle generated when the foot dis/connects with the floor. Using a bit of geometry math they can guestimate estimated return time and even path if the shoes have gyros, least not the gyro of the headset to determine if and when the movement needs to stop and what direction to expect it to come from or be going to.
Great point that he's is always mentioned but people keep thinking of having a mouse on feet. This isn't about controlling your movement like a mouse. It's to give the sensation of walking. Our knees only really let us move one direction. We need to rotate our hips, shoulders and head which we can do in VR. Like when we strafe in a game we feel like we are moonwalking sideways. In real life we are running straight but our shoulders are turned. We need to erase our traditional gaming experience as reference for real life immersion. Vive got it right out of the box by offering room scale movement but space is limited. They offer teleportation. The idea is you walk to the spot but if you can't you teleport then walk. But gamers want to not move and just float their character around in locomotion. It kills immersion but they are so used to it. They think teleportation kills immersion but only because they are not using it the way it was meant to be used which is usually do to space limitations.
Linus is a savage. Ripped them a new one right at their booth. Now that's real journalism.
thank you linus. your review has always been one of the most honest and unbiased that other reviewers. Keep up the good work etchis and your integrity.
No linus, resolution first. I had a vive and the only problem I had with it was the fact that the pixels were glaringly huge. Latency on the Vive was good. It was smooth at 90hz. But for real, I can't even shoot farther than 50-70 feet because you just can't see anything clearly enough to even distinquish who it was.
It was a weird comment by him. Refresh rate? No regular human can tell 70 from 90 in VR.. i know we tested it. Its like he read looking for something negative to say.
completely agree. the #1 thing I want to see improved is resolution.
so many (non native) VR games can be hard on the eyes when trying to read stuff or spot things in the distance.
Second would be the god rays. the 90hz seem more than fine imo
@@photocrafting6068 frame rate has everything to do with the speed of movement on screen. In an air combat sim 70 FPS is super noticeable when a jet flys right in front of your canopy at 350 mph. The hallmark of a truly good company, indie or not; they are willing to accept critical reviews of their product... and then make it better and ask for another critique. I've had my eye on the Pimax for a while after the Vive Pro failed to make any realistic improvements that justified the cost. Still going to wait until the bugs are worked out and the control systems are in place (or maybe just the former if the headset is really mind blowing) before I pick one up. Just look at what he did to the Vive "Pro" video! ALL because HTC did not send him one to KEEP for Free! He literally said it was garbage, & as I have owned an Oculus, the original Vive & now the Vive Pro I know for a fact it is "Twice" as good as the original Vive & ANY other VR HMD you can buy! He told Everyone thinking about buying the Vive Pro that it was total garbage & luckily I had already bought one & I was lucky enough to know some not too happy people that have sent him products b4 (which he reviewed positively once paid $12,000!) so I knew what a lying piece of human garbage his entire channel is. I get so pissed off to see a comment like yours of poor clueless "victims" that have no idea of the truth, to me it feels exactly the same as if I saw people saying what a lovely, kind, caring guy Adolf Hitler is, thats no exageration either, as far as "tech" & lying for money goes, Linus is Hitler. Its sickening.
@@VirusOfCyrus Linus has been very honest about how he's on UA-cam as a business but also your some of statements are factually wrong he's given good reviews to things he didn't get to keep before, like the small really cool tower PC he wasn't aloud to keep. He's been sponsored by Nvidia but has still shit talked them. So that's two things going against both of your statements. Him saying things are bad that he doesn't get paid for or get to keep and him saying it's good when he's paid. He's literally done the opposite of both of these things many times. It genuinely seems like you are just upset about the vive pro review but even in that review he mainly said it just wasn't a big enough leap forward for the price. Also vive pro and vive Cosmo are shitty rip offs, like I'm glad you like it and all but that doesn't change how shit they are for value objectively when you look at what your getting for the money. Idk man you just have a hate boner you have made lots of comments like this, really reminds me of a Mormon or someshit you think your spreading the truth and saving people but it's really just all bs, who cares if Linus is good or bad, one things for sure he's pretty fuckin honest, owning up to embarrassing mistakes like when he got something hugely wrong about Sony, owning up to mistakes in general, being truthful about how things work and how he makes money, I mean you see most of this stuff in his streams and the wan show. Don't worry your aren't witnessing a horrible atrocity against mankind here, obviously comparing Linus to Hitler is just insane and combine that with your false righteousness it really reminds me of a child or someone like Chris chan, Man sorry that you feel like your precious vive pro that you bought is being threatened, it's clear that's the driving force behind this and isn't you being righteous.
Virus Of Cyrus you’re actually joking. You do realize that the Vive Pro is around $1500. Not everyone is made of money. The Vive Pro is actually GOOD! And even Linus said that. But for one, the Valve Index has a better FOV, a better refresh rate, better sub-pixels, better audio solution, better comfort, better controllers, better cameras, better tracking, a better microphone, and better build quality. The Vive Pro is practically the EXACT same as the og Vive, besides a slightly higher resolution, and being 2x the price as the og. Linus was not mad that he had to send it back. Just a little disappointed at first because he was excited to try it. It’s obvious that you bought a Vive Pro because you didn’t do enough research at first, then came across all the terrible reviews and didn’t want to return it. Now you’re trying to shut down everyone that said it was shit even though all your facts are entirely false and biased. Linus said something along the lines of “I do have to return this, but I do not see myself buying this to replace my original Vive.” You wanna know why? Because it’s definitely NOT “‘Twice’ as good as the original Vive” it’s just a slight bit better for 2X THE PRICE. And that was his point. He wasn’t going to spend all that money to get something only a little better. Now, off today that Vive Pro video, I am offended down to the deepest part of my bones that you said that because Linus has my respect through his UNDYING HONESTY. He recently put hate on the PS5 for saying it had the best ssd or something like that. Then Linus got hate and he realized he made a mistake and he misheard something. He then proceeded to make one of the best apology videos ever with brutal honesty that hurt even him. I respect this man so much, even if he does have the attitude of an old man that went through WWII or something sometimes. So sit the fuck down because you are on the wrong channel if you want to hate.
@Slackify I had watched it. I even rewatched it after I commented. It turns out, he didn’t even have to return it. It was his to keep. He literally said multiple times that it wasn’t a bad headset. But for its price, it wasn’t a big enough step up from the original Vive.
@@VirusOfCyrus It's disgusting after all the good and hard work has done to the community, the charity streams he has done, the knowledge he has given us, you compare him to HITLER. You are the most ungrateful piece of sh*t on the internet.
