- The latest Pimax 8KX DMAS version just got an upgrade: it can now do full 4k per eye resolution at incredible 120hz! That is something I had to check out! Can my 3080 actually drive this kind of refresh rate? And how good is the Pimax 8KX DMAS version in general as compared to the KDMAS version? Find it all out in this video!

Are you going to get this?
People need to realize that you need a powerful PC to run the 8KX. It's that simple. Unfortunately, research is not common with the majority of consumers. 💯
I have the Pimax 8KX SMAS and LOVE IT even more then I did with the Reverb G2. I got the KDAMS Speakers from Amazon and with BOOM3D the sound that I bought from the internet it is the best experience I have had in VR since the release or the DK2 back when I first tried VR in 2014 and owning several different VR headsets though out the years. I am running a I9 9900K with a 3080TI. Now I just got to get my hands on the DMAS speakers but Pimax have no stock yet for Canada.
Great video Seb (and great progress for PIMAX). God knows I call them out when they over promise but they keep plugging and they deserve some wins and credit when they do..
Please let us know if you see any gains in image and performance in Flight Simulator.
Thanks for the update!
Thanks for also making new video about all the updates Pimax brings to their VR headsets.
Bought one off Amazon. Getting it Tuesday 7/19, 3090 and fiber optic cable waiting for your firmware Pimax! Yea!
Hey Sebastian, did you receive the Pimax Crystal to review? Thank you for all your informative videos.
Great video as always! I am waiting till this fall holiday season to see what is revealed before I buy anything right now. I have been without a VR headset since my Samsung odyssey plus broke while I was wildly playing thrill of the fight ha ha ha. I could not afford to get another one and replace my desktop. So I have been patiently saving up and watching the evolution of the headsets. I want to see the Pimax 12k, Meta project cambria, as well as what Apple and Valve have coming. I really look forward to low latency wireless streaming to a large POV headset. I am interested as well to see how the new Nvidia and AMD GPUs make VR even better.
Nice mate.I would probably run at 90 hz sweet spot and take the clarity instead..and smoother cheers mate
I have a KDMAS arriving today. I'm really hoping there is no difference in the panels like you suggested. The DMAS was sold out and I went to great lengths to check that only the sound was different. Pimax tech support confirmed it with me via a support ticket before I purchased.
The KDMAS panels are also fine after you do some color adjustments as I suggested in one of my videos.
Hi, I have the 8KS DMAS, could you pls share a link to where you bought your prescription lens inserts? Thanks.
Any word on the Pimax Crystal or 12k headset meetups? The Crystal is supposed to be out this quarter and they only have a month and a half left but still no hands on? Really looking forward to the first try on those, do you have any dates setup yet for an impression?
Most I can see is on discord some image leaks of individual pimax crystal parts surfaced this week.
I have a 5k super with a 5700 xt , zero issues , it has to be the dedicated USB 3.0 card i put in to help with my Vive pro issues several years back ...
The limiting factor in AAA games would be the graphics card. It will be interesting to see what next generation GPU's can do. With this, anything else than an RTX 3080 or better is a must, basically, and the 3090 really doesn't make sense - too much money for too little performance upgrade, most likely, for most. Only issue is that Nvidia's 4000 series is going to use *massive* amounts of electrical power and no doubt generate a lot of heat. It does look like Pimax is really stepping up the game though, like here making the 8K better, and with the 12K model around the corner, and they're the only HMD manufacturers to really push for wide FOV. Super happy (for what it is) with my Pico, but I suspect the future may hold a Pimax for me. The narrow (well, normal) FOV I have now is definitely not ideal.
Do you have a dedicated USB 3.0 card in your PC?
Question...were you using Brightness and Contrast at default? Or -1 for Brightness and +1 for Contrast or similar as most people do?
All default and it already looked good! I used all these special settings for the KDMAS.
How was edge - edge distortion?
Can you set change the IPD a value less than 60? A year ago, I had to return my PimaxK because I couldn't set the IPD to 58.9.
I have an IPD of about 58.1 and even at 60mm with some software ipd adjustments the picture is clearer than every headset I’ve owned minus the index.
@@Killswitch1411 i think i just have a high tolerance for what i consider clarity when it comes to VR haha.
Thanks!
I thought the 8k can only be upscaled to 110hz. Is this a different model?
ordered the crystal with the deposit on Nov 22 and it's almost April 2023 and still no idea when I'll see one. Went on the Pimax site to look at this 8kx DMAS and it's even out of stock. Can't even buy this right now to be able to take advantage of the full trade in credit whenever the 12K comes out. But they managed to get headsets out to people to publish reviews for them
I think pimax has to many products on the market..8k 5k plus 5k super 8kx 5kxr and Artsian lol
They will run out of product names soon :D
We will obviously begin to phase older products out of our product line as it becomes economically or logistically impossible to continue offering them.
People worry about the amount of masks in the sea. But I worry about the amount of Pimax headsets damaging our environment 🤭
Agreed lol
For the pimax 12k do you need to be a previous owner of a pimax headset? If so I’ll buy this :)
No, but previous customers who take advantage of our trade in offer will receive a spot in line for the 12k qled when it starts shipping
I am waiting for the Pimax Crystal. I am a VR sim racer / flight sim guy, and there's no way this generation of GPUs is pumping out enough FPS, and I want inside out tracking. Once the 4000 series GPUs come out I'll most likely go that route with a Pimax Crystal (granted the Crystal is everything they are promising).
Have you tried it with 4090? Was set up really difficult? Is there any website with clean instruction how to make it work flawlessly?
How’s your relationship with MegaDodo Sebastian? Have you received your DecaGear headset?
What's the update on the Pimax 12K??? I think PImax said end of the year. It's getting closer!!
Release in 2025 🙂👍
Bought a pimax 8kx KDMAS and did your IPD tutroial but the right lens is blurry (which is from the inside of the lens) and has noticeable distortion on the outside unlike my left eye which is perfect, It seems like the right lens is position wrong with it being rotated to much inwards compared to the left so im unsure if a silicone face covering would help. My faced is shaped normally so i think its a quality control issue with pimax overall the clarity is decent enough for videos but I dislike it in games where i look around more. Thats the problem with these ultra wide lenses and a chinese company, they have to be positioned perfectly as well as quality control has to be excellent for it to work for everyone.
@@shojo8708 My right eye is clear if i make the IPD offset negative so i will just work around that instead of setting perfect IPD, looks much better but does strain my eye a bit more but that may be due to my eye sight so I will get it checked.
i've got the hp reverb g2 v2, it currently only runs at 90Hz. with the pimax and others (quest 2 etc) intially running at the lower refresh rates but now do 120Hz. does that mean all it needs is a firmware update? I wonder if they will ever do it.
I gave up on the Reverb G2. I bought a quest 2 and even though the resolution is slightly lower i had an overall greater experience. Its sad to see microsoft attempt at VR go so poorly. There are ways to upscale the Quest 2 graphics to get it near G2 quality. im satisfied.
@@Holret ive had the vive , vive pro, index and g2v2. g2 v2 hands down the best image same audio as index. FOV slightly lower but not really noticeble than index. there is no way the quest 2 matches the reverb fidelity. Reverb controllers suck though tracking is so shit. but i use index controllers with base stations.
@@joebloggs8900 seems like a matter of perception. I also had the vive, Oculus S, reverb and as stated quest 2. Yes it can, as long as you perform some technical tweaking you can get a near G2 image. I dont need anyone to tell me otherwise. resolution between the 2 is similar enough.
@@Holret interesting. I must admit quest 2 from where it started to where it is now is pretty impressive. I just can't stand the zuck. So many anticompetitive practices by this guy
Good review, thanks. How long before Pimax admits they are not going to ship the 12 k x this year? They should know by now right? It takes at least 6 months to get the manufacturing and supply chain sorted out. Did they send you a prototype yet? No? Oh dear.
seems long long long way to go before it 。。
What app do you use to see the in game fps??
It's called fpsVR
The audio def leaves something to desire, I'm still weary of Pimax cust Serv
Can you go into any detail on why it only works on Nvidia cards? I have an AMD 6900xt and I would love to try a pimax headset because of the large field of view but it doesn't sound like my GPU is compatible
I believe it is because pimax worked with nvidia on driver integration.
It requires NVIDIA display stream compression to support the resolution and refresh rate over DisplayPort.
They almost sold me an 8K recently when I was shopping, until I found out they only support Nvidia. That means I'm not buying anything, so their loss. I may or may not decide to upgrade but my current 6800 XT can handle anything I throw at it, it's basically an RTX 3080-equivalent. I don't need to upgrade this for non-VR reasons for several years. I'd like that wide FOV, but not enough to spend an additional $1000 and buy Nvidia first.
@@eddiec5036 AMD has supported DSC since the RX 5700. I doubt it's anything Nvidia-specific, they just choose to not support Radeons, probably.
@@eddiec5036 does the Reverb G2 use stream compression?
Sebastian. I have an AMD 6900xt and havd been running my 8kx with ZERO issues for about 6 months. Is it pimax who claims it does not work with amd? You are not the first person to say this btw, so I am very curious.
Believe it’s because they (pimax) worked with nivida at driver level to make the 120hz 4kx2 pipeline work, is your model start with 2076? If so you can try using the beta firmware yourself and see if it will run correctly
Ok, that is interesting! Thanks.
i really cant wait to see a pimax crystal/12k along with NVidias RTX 4000 series
Rtx 4000 series won't be enough . Better with 5000 series
120Hz but on what settings for FOV, super sampling, etc, etc?
Watch the video?
That doesn't really matter, does it? I mean that's a PC graphics setting. The interesting part here is that this has good sound, better picture quality, and can now handle up to 120 frames per second if your PC hardware can handle it. Realistically that means an RTX 3080 or better (I'd just get a 3080 - or wait for the 4000-series, the 3090 is too expensive and doesn't give enough performance upgrade in my opinion) and it will not be able to do 2x4K at 120 frames per second in most games.
@@mixedrealityTV I did but I couldn’t really make it out. Maybe it’s my eyesight.
Unfortunately gpus are not ready but the good news is Pimax is ready!
If you are wanting to sim in 120 with wide fov rn forget it
Personally, I’m waiting for either the Apple VR, the Steam Deckard, or the Vive focus 4. I own the Vive Focus 3, and I’d love to see a version with eye and face tracking.
Same. But if pimax actually delivers with the 12k, I might have to save up for that!
Same.. waiting for Apple VR and hoping it has a wider FOV than the Varjo and everything else to be better as well.. Have been waiting since the first HTC VR for the “perfect” headset to pull the trigger again. Let’s hope 🤔
PSVR2 is the big one for me.
@@pmulherin9414 Yeah that one’s gonna be sick!
I thought the Vive Focus 3 looked really great, but it's got some strange design decisions that make it unappealing to me. Loud-ish fan, bad mic, and non-square FOV were just some of the issues I heard mentioned. The biggest one in my opinion though is the fact that there's no way to charge while playing, putting a hard cap on playtime at 2 hours.
Hopefully whatever the "Vive Focus 4" or perhaps a different, non-business-oriented headset will resolve those issues. More competition, especially against Facebook, is always good.
I think the distortion is what makes people sick because I was feeling a little dizzy when you were in certain situations, especially when you were in the water and I think it's because I saw the fisheye look and made me feel a bit dizzy.
Wait. Are you saying you got dizzy watching this video?
@@Mike-bg3cf A little and nothing makes me dizzy like that.
Is there a tech reason why they can’t hit 144 hz like the index?

I wish these headsets had wireless capabilities.
Keep an Eye out for Crystal and the 12k qled then
Shame you need the expensive Valve controller system. These days I think inside out tracking has come far enough to do away with that. Isn't the next Pimax planned with that?
While it's absolutely hilarious how many confusing products Pimax simultaneously markets, at least if they make a successful wide FOV HMD with Tobii eye-tracking, there's hope some other manufacturers might follow suit. For the general consumer I can't imagine wide FOV HMDs working with their PC hardware well without it.
if you think pimax products are confusing, just wait until you're trying to find a USB scale with specific specs, there's only many, many different variants some of which don't have the specs required while literally saying they do.
Please retest this with a rtx 4090 🙂
My 8kx is dead I need a replacement 😭
trade in for the crystal or 12kqled
@@WhatsupAbroad Does that mean that we can trade-in non-functional headsets?
The biggest problem with PIMAX, it's still a lot of hassle to get it working, but they have way too many models and are releasing way too fast a new incremental new version.
I really don't see how having alot of models is a downside
Lol they are releasing way too fast. While vive and Hp are not releasing anything worth while and very slow.
@@Ashley-1917 support. Because they release so many new versions they tend to stop supporting the 'old' ones, also it tends to them not fully developing the current headset they're gonna ship next as they know they will release another nee version in a couple of months anyway.
WHEN IS 12 K COMING?
2025
Let's face it Bas....they can make 12K 360° for all I care it's NO use if your GPU can't handle it. It's like driving a Ferrari in the Sahara..you ain't going nowhere 😜😉
Actually as you could see in the video, even with the 3080 there are some games I could use the 120hz mode.
WHY does this headset only works on Nvidia GPUs ????
I have a 6900xt and the 8kx. Zero issues. I have no idea who started spreading that rumor.
Do you have the latest DMAS version with 120hz? ;)
This is NOT a rumour! The 8KX KDMAS works with AMD Gpu. New model 8KX DMAS only works Nvidia. I have 3090 and 6900XT and only works on 3090. The newer model has updated panel and new sound codec.
@@mixedrealityTV PLEASE answer my question - WHY does this headset only works on Nvidia GPUs ????
@@ChrisM541 You must ask Pimax!
their site says for DMAS is 90hz
120hz is a recent update and not all 8kx headsets are capable of it. That's why it isn't listed.
Before I clicked the link, I said to myself, "If it's any more than $800 for just the headset, then it's definitely not worth it, and I'll just wait for the next headset from Valve." Then I clicked the link and saw the price. 😳🤢🤣 Yeah, they're crazy asking for that much money.
Thanks for the video though!
the key point is there's no other company do that(FOV) like Pimax.
@@Esther-cz3gb The key point is that the price is insane.
The fact that we’re still playing pistol whip which is a great game but it’s years old and where is VR going? There just hasn’t been enough great, new games. The really good games are already years old. Where are the great new games in VR?. VR is just sort of stagnating. Not in hardware but in software which is just disappointing.
I think it's more about the advancing technology now. With the Crystal, 12k, Yaw 2 motion rig, haptic vests and new Katwalk C2 all coming out in the next few months, it seems to be more about immersion in the current games. It's fine with me, I've ordered all of them lol. More immersion the better, especially when the new triple A games eventually arrive and will be able to use the new technology with them...
VR itself is still a niche activity, even if you count all the Quest 2's that have sold. As a market for games, it's tiny. PC VR is a much smaller market still. It's not surprising, in my opinion, that the amount of AAA virtual reality titles is quite small. Games get made so they can make profit, first. And there is vastly more profit in console games or normal PC games than there are in VR right now. Maybe the PSVR2 can help change that a little as time goes by.
𝖕𝖗𝖔𝖒𝖔𝖘𝖒 🙈
oh my ears, the mic in the pimax sounds bad
Is Germany, US occupied territory? And if so, at what cost?
1. spend a bunch of money for 8K VR. 2. lower down the resolution so you could play without jerking. Well done (facepalm)
I would never buy another Pimax after getting my KS 5k+.
Goodheadset, buggy software, poor build quality, and the lies they tell you.
They will tell you anything to buy the product and never come through with what they said or change it to suit them.
That was in the past long ago
@@x32i77 Exactly, you're talking about 4 years ago...companies and technology advances. Give them some credit and stop looking back at teething pains from half a decade ago...
